Abstract:
It has been hypothesized that white plumage facilitates flock formation in Ardeidae. We conducted four experiments using decoys to test factors involved in attracting wading birds to a specific pond. The first three experiments tested the effects of plumage colouration, flock size, and species-specific decoys on flock formation. The fourth experiment examined intraspecific differences in flock choice between the two colour morphs of the reddish egret, Egretta rufescens (Gmelin, 1789). Wading birds landed at flocks of decoys more often than single or no decoys (P < 0.001) but exhibited no ov

Abstract:
Gaseous emissions from poultry litter causes production problems for producers as well as the environment, by contributing to climate change and reducing air quality. Novel methods of reducing ammonia (NH3) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in poultry facilities are needed. As such, our research evaluated GHG emissions over a 42 d period. Three separate flocks of 1000 broilers were used for this study. The first flock was used only to produce litter needed for the experiment. The second and third flocks were allocated to 20 pens in a randomized block design with four replicated of five treatm

In the present study, observations on vertebral osteomyelitis and spondylolisthesis (‘kinky back syndrome’) showing high incidence in 8 broiler parent flocks in different parts of Hungary are summarised. A theoretical model of flock size in migrating birds is developed. Although previous models of formation flight in birds show improved flight performance, they do not explain flock size variation across bird species or at different times of the year for a given bird species. This model captures some of the diversity in flock size observed in nature by incorporating energetic costs of flight and energy income from foraging. It turns out that within a myriad of possible flock sizes there - is one that is optimal for maximizing energetic efficiency (net energetic gain/energy expenditure) for a gi

Fibres in concentrated suspensions are in continuous contact with other fibres and may interlock through elastic bending to form coherent networks. Such interlocking is termed Type-C cohesion. The process by which Type-C cohesion forms among fibres and the resulting structure and tensile strength of individual floes of fibres have been examined in experimental study in which relatively straight, smooth nylon (6-6) fibres of aspect ratios from 65 to 189 were suspended in aqueous-sugar solutions. Abstract This paper addresses an energy-balanced leader-switching policy for formation rotation control of multi-agent systems inspired by bird flocks. Birds that flock in V-formation with a leader rotation strategy are able to travel longer distances due to reduced drag and therefore less energy expenditure. This flocking behavior with a leader rotation will result in more conservation of overall energy and will be particularly beneficial to migrating birds that should fly long distances without landing. In this paper, we propose an energy-balanced leader-switching policy inspired by this bir
