Full textThis research set out to determine the feasibility of using Java to create a tool that could perform paper-to-electronic format conversion by vectorizing the lines in a raster image of an architectural floor plan. The tool aimed to apply a method that was previously used in another field (mechanical engineering) to Architectural floor plans. The method used had to overcome the problems associated with raster drawings that include noise and image disortions in addition to being able to identify lines, the line thickness and the junctions along the lines. The method used was the Global Line Vectorization Algorithm.

Full textVirtual Reality (VR) is an new and exciting medium waiting to be fully explored and capitalised by media experts. The advantages of the 3D graphics andinteractive nature of VR allows unique communication opportunities from a content expert to a target audience. Despite the attractiveness of VR as a communications medium, it has not yet reached its full potential in that role. We believe that this is because content experts do not have the necessary tools to create Virtual Environment (VE) applications to their specifications. The design of a VE is complex and tools to support every aspect of the design processes are few and far between. On the other hand, there has been much activity in the development of authoring tools in view of supporting content experts in the creation of VEs. Although these tools simplify the creation process, they still require some degree of programming. We believe that in order to allow a content expert to exploit the medium, support of the design phase is needed to bridge the gap between designers and creators of these environments.

This thesis project proposes a rapid visualization machine that can produce agile prototypes of simple architectural plans on a finite grid system. While various visualization systems to demonstrate instantaneous three dimensional form generations have been implemented recently by automobile industries and artists, a small scale visualization machine for architectural planning purposes has not been tested. Through careful analysis of the minimalist architectural plans of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and research into the schematic plans of Palladian villas, it was determined that 1) fundamental structural components are the column and the wall, and 2) simple architectural plans can be well represented by a finite grid system on which those components are laid out. The proposed system is composed of repeatable, independent modular pieces; each houses one column unit and two wall units that can be extruded or restructured depending on the designs of the user. Those components are driven by servo motors which translate into agile movements to instantly reflect any change of layout a designer draws in the software. The current machine design with a 4 x 4 module grid can create a completely enclosed 3 x 3-grid plan and is able to visualize simple plans layouts. With the increased number of modules in the machine, a higher number of combinatorial plan schematics can be represented and more complex architectural plans can be visualized. The analysis of plans suggest a finite 12 x 12 module grid on the machine, or a 11 x 11-grid plan, is sufficient in the context of visualization for commonly practiced residential designs of architecture.

Entre os trabalhos apresentados neste período, destaca-se o livro "Notes on the synthesis of form" do matemático e arquiteto Christopher Alexander.
Abstract: ln the first years of the 1960's, architectural design was influenced by scientific applications, dealing with a large amount of information to achieve solutions of complex problems. lmpacted by the Philosophy of Science, Systems Theory and Operational Research, many designers and engineers developed analysis, synthesis and evaluation methods to support the design processo At the same time, Christopher Alexander' s book "Notes on the synthesis of form" had a special interest and influence in the design methods movement. ln his work, Alexander presented principles to guide architectural design and a conceptual framework to organize the variables of complex problems, called "program". Since the publication of the "Notes on the synthesis of form" many architectural programming methods have been developed under these principles. Along with the principles of the synthesis of form and the definitions of form, context, ensemble and fitness, the design process information is more precisely defined. Architectural programming presents the conceptual framework to organize this information. The present research applied the synthesis of form concepts and architectural programming methods to the analysis of three case studies with the goal of adopting a practical mean to the architectural design process. The information about the case studies was obtained by interviewing the principal architects, who described the development of their residential project. All the interview information was organized according to three different architectural programming frameworks: the program described by Alexander, the Problem Seeking Method and the Contemporary Values of Architecture enumerated by Hershberger. To assist this research a database was developed to store the three case study information and organize this according to the three selected architectural programming frameworks. A computer tool to reproduce Alexander' s Decomposition of Systems (HIDECS) was developed and used for the case study analyses. The HIDECS computer program was reconstituted within a contemporary computer programming language, more than forty years after its first use, and is available for architectural design development now. The results of this research pointed out the rich design issues of the three case studies and each architectural programming framework identified the origins of design solutions adopted. As a set, the analysis methods showed the importance of objective reasoning and demonstrated the essential influence of construction knowledge on a productive design process

XIX, o concreto armado no início do séc.
Abstract: The research discussed concepts that deal with the exploration of materiality in the design process, starting with the discussion of design methods - according to literature - and the issues that determine the physical properties of materials and architectural composition. The possibilities offered by new technologies in the development of building materials and construction techniques represent an important factor in research exploration and application of materials during the design activity. The latest design techniques - such as digital manufacturing - became a key element in changing architectural vocabulary of design studies. However, there was also the experience gained through practice, enables the architect to develop his work with the investigation of building materials. João Filgueiras Lima (Lelé) is a clear example of this condition - only reached the architectural quality having mastered all the knowledge and skills necessary for constructive practice. Besides knowledge, it was observed that when the designer takes the study of material as a fundamental part of their work, their development and results acquire another value - the message of the architect not only becomes accurated and increases the field of possibilities

Abstract: Designers often underestimate the beginning of the process of creating an architectural project for one family homes, which nevertheless does not make it less complex. When the project situation involves residential renovation, especially if one of the residents is going through a period of adaptation resulting from a new physical condition, such as in acquired disability, the project variables increase considerably. Besides full accessibility for the residents, it is also necessary to provide for recovering the emotional ties to the home. Using a case study methodology, the aim of this study was to discuss the challenges faced by those living in the home and by the architect during the beginning phases of the project. The idea is to illuminate principles from the point of view of the subject who has to deal with the new situation of lack of access to spaces within his own home, in order to support the development of methodologies for the work of home designers. This study briefly presents a historical context on movements fighting for and conquering rights for people with disabilities in Brazil and in the world. Parallels were drawn between Brazilian and international policies on accessibility of built environments, focusing on the juxtaposition of the Americans with Disability Act and the Brazilian Decreto Federal 5.296/2004, with their respective instruments and norms. The study discusses issues concerning the relationship between the person and the environment he inhabits, and the changes that can ensue as to affect, identification and empowerment of the person with the place in which he resides. Finally, the study explores methodological alternatives for developing a program of needs and evaluation of the built environment, pointing out issues underlined in the literature and by the subjects of this study that ought to be taken into account when remodeling an accessible space so as to value the person environment relationship, as well the person?s identification and affect with the place of family dwelling

Full textThe concept of sustainable development has been widely discussed in many sectors of society, aiming an integrated and comprehensive vision of improvements and solutions for the growing environmental, social and economic problems. As a result, professionals, working with projects in higher education institutions, have been discussing the inclusion of practices that minimize the impact caused by the construction of their own libraries, especially when it is necessary to establish a connection between the edification, the occupant health and the quality of performed activities. In this regard, the environmental assessment systems have been widespread in Brazil and through those we seek to raise awareness related to the environmental impact made by the buildings during the stages of planning, construction and operation. However, what incorporate as practices aimed at sustainability in university libraries Projects? To answer this, it was made a literature review to find the concepts inherent to the university libraries theme, as well as was analyzed projects within the area in question with greater sustainability features. Also, the current sustainability criteria presented in the evaluation systems were analyzed, among which were detailed LEED, AQUA-HQE and PBE-Edifica. Through this analysis we identified the parameters used in a way to assist in a proposition of sustainability guidelines and using a survey applied to the library users of the Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná (UTFPR), we sought a deepening of the issues that imply the quality of these spaces by checking the incorporation of sustainability criteria as well as the variables that are part of the project process. Ultimately, through the ideas presented throughout the work, along with the study of conditions, we came to the proposition of guidelines for incorporating sustainability concepts in planning and architecture projects of university libraries.

Kansas City is expecting a 25% growth in population by 2050. This design proposal promotes West Bottoms as a potential area to house some of the new population, and more importantly supply a live and work community for these people. West Bottoms is also home to major industry in Kansas City as well as an up and coming art culture. West Bottoms has great potential for a community that allows the existing and new population to be a part of a live-work-play community with the vacancies in the area. The projected population growth is expected to promote sprawl, further increasing the average driving time to the city. West Bottoms currently has few connections to the downtown and offers few reasons to come to the area. These connections are mainly major bridges or highways. Another issue West Bottoms faces is flooding problems from OK Creek and Turkey Creek, which lead into the Kansas and Missouri Rivers. Finally, post and present industrial soil contamination threatens the groundwater. When mixed with flooding concerns, this contamination is potentially harmful for the health of downstream cities. Drawing inspiration from travels, Kansas City charm, plants, art, and water storage, case studies were researched. Themes from each case study were quantified. These themes paired with inventory and analysis of the West Bottoms provided the basis for the design proposed here. The successional design of the area will progress from a contaminated landscape to a landscape that holds floodwater. The final design holds all of the stormwater from the 100 year 1, 2, 3, 6, 12, and 24 hour rain events. The final design incorporates areas of learning, a variety of paths and seating, a live-work-play community, clean and creative industry, and an art culture that sustains the excitement for the timeline of succession. Overtime this landscape will evolve into a new destination for Kansas City using an integrated solution remediating the soil and holding flood waters as an amenity for the new population.

Moolman, Carel-Pieter. "The design of a community-integrated secondary school in Emzinoni." 2014. http://encore.tut.ac.za/iii/cpro/DigitalItemViewPage.external?sp=1001636.
Full textThis thesis presents the design of a secondary school in the township of Emzinoni, Mpumalanga. The thesis challenges the current school building morphology in terms of spatial layout and tectonics, with the intent of providing multi-use facilities accessible to both the school pupils and the surrounding community. The selected site in Emzinoni, like many township areas in South Africa, is almost devoid of any civic or public buildings or services, just the endless sprawl of small residential units and shacks with the random school rising two storeys above the surrounding context. With the large capital expenditure of building a new school, this project endeavours to show a school that is more than a facility for learning or imparting knowledge; a school that can be the centre of the community and a neighbourhood activity hub, providing services and activities to the total community, to benefit all.

Full textThis thesis presents the argument that the concept of urban farming can help resolve the problem of the displacement of agriculture in distant locations from consumers, which either results in the escalation of food costs or the loss of the farmer's profit, which inevitably results in less food producers. The market place addresses the lack of formalised trading space, providing job opportunities for an increasing urban population, along a busy pedestrian route. The thesis concludes through the illustration of a design project from the resulting research, on a triangular city block on the periphery of Central Pretoria.

Roodt, Miné. "The design of an Olive Oil Production Facility in the Touws River Valley." 2014. http://encore.tut.ac.za/iii/cpro/DigitalItemViewPage.external?sp=1001509.
Full textAt present the South African olive oil industry is highly dependent on international imports due to local olive oil producers being unable to meet the local demand. The need for extra virgin olive oil has increased each year since people have become more aware of the health benefits of the product. This dissertation documents the design of an olive oil production facility near the foothills of the Draaiberg mountain range in the Touws River valley. Situated in close proximity to the Touws River railway station, the proposed architectural intervention responds to the current situation of neglected railway towns through the implementation of agri-tourism in the area. Public interest creates a platform for the market to educate the broader public about health benefits, which has caused a gradual, growth in the olive oil industry. This in turn shows that olive oil farms need a public interface, such as an information centre, a shop and tasting room to entice the consumer and create awareness of the quality level of olive oil South Africa has to offer. The aim of this thesis is to design an olive oil production facility, focusing on the production of extra virgin olive oil and relevant alternative products. The facility will not only function as an agricultural olive press for a private farming concern, but will also act as a community press facility to allow for continuous growth in the olive industry. One of the design objectives is to create a space for information and social interaction. The main building's size is informed by the size of the productive landscape and formulas were used to calculate the volume of oil produced per hectare. The production process can be followed by the visitor, giving rise to a linear building typology.
Goussard, Marthinus Hermanus Johannes. "The design of a centre for resilient urban food systems in Sunnyside, Pretoria." 2014. http://encore.tut.ac.za/iii/cpro/DigitalItemViewPage.external?sp=1001506.
Full textA substantial proportion of the African population is deprived of access to safe and reliable food. Many people in Tshwane currently live with long-term malnutrition, seeing that food insecurity is growing most rapidly in formal urban areas, referred to as food deserts, due to their limited access to food. Designing urban environments for local food security has become imperative. This dissertation presents the design of a research centre to promote a resilient urban food systems in Sunnyside, Pretoria. A combination of high- and low-intensity cultivation methods is integrated into the building to create a balance between optimised crop yield and community participation and education. The holistic integration of systems, people and the built environment aims to create a building that is not merely a machine for living, but a living machine.
