This research set out to determine the feasibility of using Java to create a tool that could perform paper-to-electronic format conversion by vectorizing the lines in a raster image of an architectural floor plan. The tool aimed to apply a method that was previously used in another field (mechanical engineering) to Architectural floor plans. The method used had to overcome the problems associated with raster drawings that include noise and image disortions in addition to being able to identify lines, the line thickness and the junctions along the lines. The method used was the Global Line Vectorization Algorithm.

Virtual Reality (VR) is an new and exciting medium waiting to be fully explored and capitalised by media experts. The advantages of the 3D graphics andinteractive nature of VR allows unique communication opportunities from a content expert to a target audience. Despite the attractiveness of VR as a communications medium, it has not yet reached its full potential in that role. We believe that this is because content experts do not have the necessary tools to create Virtual Environment (VE) applications to their specifications. The design of a VE is complex and tools to support every aspect of the design processes are few and far between. On the other hand, there has been much activity in the development of authoring tools in view of supporting content experts in the creation of VEs. Although these tools simplify the creation process, they still require some degree of programming. We believe that in order to allow a content expert to exploit the medium, support of the design phase is needed to bridge the gap between designers and creators of these environments.

Abstract:
When designing a building, sound is one of the problems to take into account. Vibrating machines, such as ventilation fans, water pumps and compressors, generate structure-borne sound. The structure-borne sound travels up the structure of the building and generates sound in adjacent rooms. To be able to predict the sound radiated in the adjacent rooms when designing a building, a semi-analytical model has been developed. Using the incident vibrations from the floor plate where the vibrating machine is standing, the transmission loss in the junction between the floor plates and the wall plate is calculated. This can bed one in every junction in the building, creating a system of multiple junctions. The sound radiation to the adjacent rooms is later approximated using the velocity of the plates. The model is verified with measurements in two case studies. This shows that the model has good potential in predicting the normal acceleration amplitudes in the relevant plates. The two case studies have different geometric properties and different sources. The comparison between the model and the measurement gives similar results. The model analyses the output of the bending waves since this is the wave type that radiates sound, but longitudinal waves are present in the model. With only two case studies it is too early to say that the model works for all systems, but it could be used as a fist approach. The model, right now, is restricted to isotropic, homogeneous material without losses. A parametric study shows that the transmission loss is dependent on the ratio between the thicknesses of the floor plate and the wall plate. The ratio should be as large as possible to get a high transmission loss, but depends on how the junction is structured.

This thesis project proposes a rapid visualization machine that can produce agile prototypes of simple architectural plans on a finite grid system. While various visualization systems to demonstrate instantaneous three dimensional form generations have been implemented recently by automobile industries and artists, a small scale visualization machine for architectural planning purposes has not been tested. Through careful analysis of the minimalist architectural plans of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and research into the schematic plans of Palladian villas, it was determined that 1) fundamental structural components are the column and the wall, and 2) simple architectural plans can be well represented by a finite grid system on which those components are laid out. The proposed system is composed of repeatable, independent modular pieces; each houses one column unit and two wall units that can be extruded or restructured depending on the designs of the user. Those components are driven by servo motors which translate into agile movements to instantly reflect any change of layout a designer draws in the software. The current machine design with a 4 x 4 module grid can create a completely enclosed 3 x 3-grid plan and is able to visualize simple plans layouts. With the increased number of modules in the machine, a higher number of combinatorial plan schematics can be represented and more complex architectural plans can be visualized. The analysis of plans suggest a finite 12 x 12 module grid on the machine, or a 11 x 11-grid plan, is sufficient in the context of visualization for commonly practiced residential designs of architecture.

Oakley, Glenn W. "Fragment to foundation: photographic observation and tonal drawing as a point of beginning for architectural design." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/53380.

Full text
Abstract:
The medium of photography provides a first vehicle for the study of architectural and visual form. Through its employment, initially in a spontaneous and instinctive manner but with increasing understanding and awareness over time, a groundwork is laid for visual design in other media. Continuous tone pencil drawing becomes the means to realizing the lessons learned through these photographic exercises. Through this instrument, subsequent studies reveal the need for architectural design to evolve as discoveries of place rooted in a visual seed anchor point and evaluated by the same visual judgment developed in the earlier photographic work. Beginning with fragmentary images, the range of inquiry in the drawings broadens over time to encompass ever larger concerns in the design of architectural places. Reaching fruition in the design of a small retreat house, this process of study initially undertaken in photographic observation, following by drawn fragments and finally entire places, represents a paradigmatic approach to developing a working method of architectural design. The discovery of this design approach through the execution of the thesis itself constitutes the underlying theme.

Entre os trabalhos apresentados neste período, destaca-se o livro "Notes on the synthesis of form" do matemático e arquiteto Christopher Alexander.
Abstract: ln the first years of the 1960's, architectural design was influenced by scientific applications, dealing with a large amount of information to achieve solutions of complex problems. lmpacted by the Philosophy of Science, Systems Theory and Operational Research, many designers and engineers developed analysis, synthesis and evaluation methods to support the design processo At the same time, Christopher Alexander' s book "Notes on the synthesis of form" had a special interest and influence in the design methods movement. ln his work, Alexander presented principles to guide architectural design and a conceptual framework to organize the variables of complex problems, called "program". Since the publication of the "Notes on the synthesis of form" many architectural programming methods have been developed under these principles. Along with the principles of the synthesis of form and the definitions of form, context, ensemble and fitness, the design process information is more precisely defined. Architectural programming presents the conceptual framework to organize this information. The present research applied the synthesis of form concepts and architectural programming methods to the analysis of three case studies with the goal of adopting a practical mean to the architectural design process. The information about the case studies was obtained by interviewing the principal architects, who described the development of their residential project. All the interview information was organized according to three different architectural programming frameworks: the program described by Alexander, the Problem Seeking Method and the Contemporary Values of Architecture enumerated by Hershberger. To assist this research a database was developed to store the three case study information and organize this according to the three selected architectural programming frameworks. A computer tool to reproduce Alexander' s Decomposition of Systems (HIDECS) was developed and used for the case study analyses. The HIDECS computer program was reconstituted within a contemporary computer programming language, more than forty years after its first use, and is available for architectural design development now. The results of this research pointed out the rich design issues of the three case studies and each architectural programming framework identified the origins of design solutions adopted. As a set, the analysis methods showed the importance of objective reasoning and demonstrated the essential influence of construction knowledge on a productive design process

Abstract:
It is commonly believed that by involving the user in the design process of his dwelling unit, a higher level of satisfaction could be achieved. Attempts have been made in several countries to include users in the design process of their units using different communication media including computers. However, today computers have been implemented primarily for the use of architects. This study aims at narrowing the architect-user communication gap by using computers in multi-unit housing design. The author reviews past work in user involvement in the design process through the use of computers and the possibility of introducing computers into the North American homebuilding Industry. Through an algorithm the author will demonstrate how the communication process can take place. Two simulations were conducted in order to test the proposed system in a realistic situation. The results of the study suggest that the user is able to make his own decisions, control his budget and satisfy his needs independently within a reasonable amount of time. These results could have further positive impact on the architect, user, building industry and the built environment.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates a parametric study of a flat plate floor system designed using post-tensioning. The load balanced by the post-tensioning, the slab depth, and the strength of concrete were varied to create the parametric study of a hotel/condominium grid layout. In order to perform the parametric study, research was conducted on the development of post-tensioning, methods of analysis for two-way slab design, and post-tensioning methods of analysis. Design was conducted by hand through a series of Excel spreadsheets and compared to results found using the computer analysis program, ADAPT-PT. The designs found in the parametric study were then used to perform a cost analysis across ten cities in the United States: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Seattle. The designs from the hand analysis and the ADAPT-PT model provided similar results for the post-tensioning, and both methods provide an adequate design. The use of ADAPT-PT is recommended because of its ease of use and quick calculation capabilities. The designs of the hand analysis were quantified and along with unit prices gathered from contractors and suppliers the cost analysis found that the design with 100% of the dead load balanced provided the least expensive solution for all the cities, and the design using a 6000 psi strength concrete provide the most expensive solution for all cities. The least expensive slab design was $9.02 per square foot in Atlanta, Georgia, and the most expensive slab design was $24.96 per square foot in Miami, Florida. A more rigorous parametric study in the future may provide a better optimization for the hotel/condominium slab investigated as the parametric study of this thesis found costs which varied by less than 10% between the most expensive and least expensive slabs in the ten cities.

Abstract:
Architecture in its primitive form enacted a relationship of making between intentions and outcome. Post- industrialized modernization has created a multiplication of complexities, resulting in a profession that has disengaged theory and practice through the specialization of the architect and the craftsman. Design-build has the ability to be an educational process that re-engages a direct dialog and collaboration of the roles of designer and maker, reinforcing the resilience of culture and place through joining intentions and built reality. Design-build projects have the ability to be an integral part of design education because of their ability to engage in physical manifestation that is fundamentally different than formal education of designing through drawing or design at a distance. Exploring the Washington Alexandria Architecture Center's Design-Build ethos as a primary case study, I intend to support this claim by providing evidence of how a Design-Build process can engage the designer, tools, methods, and materials, with the cultural, social, and environmental context that is sensible to place. By utilizing creativity and ingenuity of available resources as an opportunity for adaptation, an organic sense of place is perceptible, the place is created. Representation beyond drawing encourages one to be proactive in connecting the qualities and characteristics of existing space; this leads to a sustainable practice of continued investment in object, materiality, time, and place. Hybrid approaches to design, or the assembly of both design and building as an academic practice, are no longer insular, but are encouraged as a way to interrelate and connect the built environment with its unbuilt opportunities and impressions.

Abstract:
Architecture is a spatial reality and, as such, should be designed spatially. Traditional methods of two dimensional design offer limited insight to the nature of the built project. By designing a project in three dimensions from its inception, an architect comes closer to the actuality of the building. This thesis addresses the possibilities and realities of three dimensional computer aided design. Radical changes in computer technology have made interactive three dimensional design possible. Clusters of processing units acting in parallel offer unprecedented flexibility and computing power. New methods of input such as voice and gesture activation are allowing greater flexibility of input. The future of three dimensional computer aided design points to higher resolution displays, holographic imaging, and spatial object manipulation. The vehicle for this architectural thesis is a computer research facility; The National Institute for Advanced Media. The project addresses the demands that new computer technologies place on architecture. It also offers a direction for designing with these new technologies. This thesis contains an analysis of the architectural project, a complete description of the architectural process, and a summary of all software packages considered. The Apple Macintosh IIfx was chosen as the hardware platform for this investigation because of its object oriented graphical environment and for its advanced multimedia capabilities.

The fundamental premise for this project was the desire to explore one of my fascinations with "movement" of space and “movement” of structure. This was somewhat a reaction to “static” boxed structures which have pervaded our eastern cities for the last few decades, and moreover, a want to inspire life into a fixed object. The work presented was a process of discovery, the most enlightening being that of "contrast". It became the key to achieve meaning My original intentions combined with changes experienced over time have resulted in a building, but better, in a transformation and another new place from which to begin.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the extent to which elite women of the eighteenth century commissioned architectural works and the extent to which the type and scale of their projects was dictated by their marital status. Traditionally, architectural historians have advocated that eighteenth-century architecture was purely the pursuit of men. Women, of course, were not absent during this period, but their involvement with architecture has been largely obscured and largely overlooked. This doctoral research has redressed this oversight through the scrutinising of known sources and the unearthing of new archival material. This thesis begins with an exploration of the legal and financial statuses of elite women, as encapsulated by the eighteenth-century marriage settlement. This encompasses brides’ portions or dowries, wives’ annuities or ‘pin-money’, widows’ dower or jointure, and provisions made for daughters and younger children. Following this, the thesis is divided into three main sections which each look at the ways in which women, depending upon their marital status, could engage in architecture. The first of these sections discusses unmarried women, where the patronage of the following patroness is examined: Anne Robinson; Lady Isabella Finch; Lady Elizabeth Hastings; Sophia Baddeley; George Anne Bellamy and Teresa Cornelys. The second section explores the patronage of married women, namely Jemima Yorke, Marchioness Grey; Amabel Hume-Campbell, Lady Polwarth; Mary Robinson, Baroness Grantham; Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough; Frances Boscawen; Elizabeth Herbert, Countess of Pembroke and Montgomery; Henrietta Knight, Baroness Luxborough and Lady Sarah Bunbury. The third and final section discusses the architectural patronage of widowed women, including Susanna Montgomery, Countess of Eglinton; Georgianna Spencer, Countess Spencer; Elizabeth Somerset, Duchess of Beaufort; Elizabeth Home, Countess of Home; Elizabeth Montagu; Mary Hervey, Lady Hervey; Henrietta Fermor, Countess of Pomfret; the Hon. Charlotte Digby; the Hon. Charlotte Boyle Walsingham; the Hon. Agneta Yorke and Albinia Brodrick, Viscountess Midleton. Collectively, all three sections advocate that elite women were at the heart of the architectural patronage system and exerted more influence and agency over architecture than has previously been recognised by architectural historians.

XIX, o concreto armado no início do séc.
Abstract: The research discussed concepts that deal with the exploration of materiality in the design process, starting with the discussion of design methods - according to literature - and the issues that determine the physical properties of materials and architectural composition. The possibilities offered by new technologies in the development of building materials and construction techniques represent an important factor in research exploration and application of materials during the design activity. The latest design techniques - such as digital manufacturing - became a key element in changing architectural vocabulary of design studies. However, there was also the experience gained through practice, enables the architect to develop his work with the investigation of building materials. João Filgueiras Lima (Lelé) is a clear example of this condition - only reached the architectural quality having mastered all the knowledge and skills necessary for constructive practice. Besides knowledge, it was observed that when the designer takes the study of material as a fundamental part of their work, their development and results acquire another value - the message of the architect not only becomes accurated and increases the field of possibilities

Abstract:
Globalization has created a theoretically supra-national, borderless world which encompasses a combination of urban economies and societies, displacing them from localities through mobilization of labor and capital based on strong telecommunicational network relations. The dimensions of global-local relationship is defined in diversification at each level of globalization, creating heterogeneous,global-local relations expressed through the new concept of governance which involves concepts of rule of law, transperancy, responsiveness, equity, effectiveness and efficiency, accountability, strategic vision. The concepts of urban legibility and imageability are based on these new concepts for creation of sustainable and livable places by reorganization and renewal of urban physical structure. Urban renewal, which aims to change urban environment according to planning in order to conform with present and future requirements for urban living and working is a political process in essence, the physical urban structure that rises on a renewal site is the result of political decisions about allocation of resources. Urban renewal is not only re-building of physical urban tissue but involves change in used of land and buildings through re-planning, comprehensive re-development of land, preservation, conservation, rehabilitation, sustainable development, liveability and gentrification. This thesis aims at exploring the laws of urban renewal and clarification and recognition of dynamics of it which will be integrated with the spatial and social evolution of a typical gecekondu district subject to transformation. Following the review of theory of urban renewal, its current implementations and approaches, unauthorized housing in Turkey and relevant legal aspects and renewal implementations are discussed along with examples from other countries. The study then concentrates on a specific implementation in a gecekondu area renewed in a legal framework through Improvement and Development Plans, keeping in mind comparisons with renewal though special transformation projects. The study shows that renewal through Improvement and Development Plans in Cevizlidere, did not approach the renewal process through a feasible transformation policy, integrating it with the city plans and left implementation to developers motivated by maximization of personal rent gain. The aim of legalization of squatter houses was realized but renewal failed to reach the target groups urging most of them to relocate elsewhere in the city, replaced them by a very different socio-economic group in the area, creating an unwholesome, unaesthetic physical tissue with a congested building stock and physical environment in Balgat in general and Cevizlidere in particular.

Abstract: Designers often underestimate the beginning of the process of creating an architectural project for one family homes, which nevertheless does not make it less complex. When the project situation involves residential renovation, especially if one of the residents is going through a period of adaptation resulting from a new physical condition, such as in acquired disability, the project variables increase considerably. Besides full accessibility for the residents, it is also necessary to provide for recovering the emotional ties to the home. Using a case study methodology, the aim of this study was to discuss the challenges faced by those living in the home and by the architect during the beginning phases of the project. The idea is to illuminate principles from the point of view of the subject who has to deal with the new situation of lack of access to spaces within his own home, in order to support the development of methodologies for the work of home designers. This study briefly presents a historical context on movements fighting for and conquering rights for people with disabilities in Brazil and in the world. Parallels were drawn between Brazilian and international policies on accessibility of built environments, focusing on the juxtaposition of the Americans with Disability Act and the Brazilian Decreto Federal 5.296/2004, with their respective instruments and norms. The study discusses issues concerning the relationship between the person and the environment he inhabits, and the changes that can ensue as to affect, identification and empowerment of the person with the place in which he resides. Finally, the study explores methodological alternatives for developing a program of needs and evaluation of the built environment, pointing out issues underlined in the literature and by the subjects of this study that ought to be taken into account when remodeling an accessible space so as to value the person environment relationship, as well the person?s identification and affect with the place of family dwelling

Abstract:
The concept of sustainable development has been widely discussed in many sectors of society, aiming an integrated and comprehensive vision of improvements and solutions for the growing environmental, social and economic problems. As a result, professionals, working with projects in higher education institutions, have been discussing the inclusion of practices that minimize the impact caused by the construction of their own libraries, especially when it is necessary to establish a connection between the edification, the occupant health and the quality of performed activities. In this regard, the environmental assessment systems have been widespread in Brazil and through those we seek to raise awareness related to the environmental impact made by the buildings during the stages of planning, construction and operation. However, what incorporate as practices aimed at sustainability in university libraries Projects? To answer this, it was made a literature review to find the concepts inherent to the university libraries theme, as well as was analyzed projects within the area in question with greater sustainability features. Also, the current sustainability criteria presented in the evaluation systems were analyzed, among which were detailed LEED, AQUA-HQE and PBE-Edifica. Through this analysis we identified the parameters used in a way to assist in a proposition of sustainability guidelines and using a survey applied to the library users of the Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná (UTFPR), we sought a deepening of the issues that imply the quality of these spaces by checking the incorporation of sustainability criteria as well as the variables that are part of the project process. Ultimately, through the ideas presented throughout the work, along with the study of conditions, we came to the proposition of guidelines for incorporating sustainability concepts in planning and architecture projects of university libraries.

Abstract:
Master of Landscape Architecture or Regional and Community Planning

Kansas City is expecting a 25% growth in population by 2050. This design proposal promotes West Bottoms as a potential area to house some of the new population, and more importantly supply a live and work community for these people. West Bottoms is also home to major industry in Kansas City as well as an up and coming art culture. West Bottoms has great potential for a community that allows the existing and new population to be a part of a live-work-play community with the vacancies in the area. The projected population growth is expected to promote sprawl, further increasing the average driving time to the city. West Bottoms currently has few connections to the downtown and offers few reasons to come to the area. These connections are mainly major bridges or highways. Another issue West Bottoms faces is flooding problems from OK Creek and Turkey Creek, which lead into the Kansas and Missouri Rivers. Finally, post and present industrial soil contamination threatens the groundwater. When mixed with flooding concerns, this contamination is potentially harmful for the health of downstream cities. Drawing inspiration from travels, Kansas City charm, plants, art, and water storage, case studies were researched. Themes from each case study were quantified. These themes paired with inventory and analysis of the West Bottoms provided the basis for the design proposed here. The successional design of the area will progress from a contaminated landscape to a landscape that holds floodwater. The final design holds all of the stormwater from the 100 year 1, 2, 3, 6, 12, and 24 hour rain events. The final design incorporates areas of learning, a variety of paths and seating, a live-work-play community, clean and creative industry, and an art culture that sustains the excitement for the timeline of succession. Overtime this landscape will evolve into a new destination for Kansas City using an integrated solution remediating the soil and holding flood waters as an amenity for the new population.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the various meanings and implications of transparency in architecture and in learning environments in particular. Architectural transparency, achieved through choice of materials and principles of formal composition, creates a diversity of relationships and can facilitate visual, conceptual, and functional clarity as well as offering simultaneous perception of different spaces. It offers a range of phenomenological qualities and so provides an opportunity to explore and complicate such dichotomies as translucency and opacity, openness and closure, and public space and private space. While celebrated throughout modern and contemporary architecture, transparency raises issues of privacy and safety even as it breaks down hierarchies and social boundaries. The research-based design of transparency in a school building necessitates careful planning to achieve a balance between the access to views, natural light, fresh air, and social interaction that transparency may bring and the continuing obligation to provide a safe, secure environment for schoolchildren.

Abstract:
In the context of urban buildings, architectural floor plans describe a building's structure and spatial distribution. These digital documents are usually shared in file formats that discard the semantic information related to walls and rooms. This work proposes a new method to recover the structural information by extracting walls and detecting rooms in 2D floor plan images, aimed at multi-unit floor plans which present challenges of higher complexity than previous works. Our proposed approach is able to handle overlapped floor plan elements, notation variations and defects in the input image, and its speed makes it suitable for real applications on both desktop and mobile devices. We evaluate our methods in terms of precision and recall against our own annotated dataset of multi-unit floor plans.

Abstract:
Biophilia is the love of nature and all living things and is the theory that forms the basis of ‘biophilic’ design. Biophilic design recognizes the positive experience of natural systems and processes in our buildings as critical to human health, performance, and well-being. Healthy living is a primary need for society and designing with nature could provide for these needs in architectural environments. Employing such techniques of design could improve the experiential quality of architectural space. The quality of healthcare environments and similar public places could become more accommodating for local communities. There would be a need for adapting these ideas to fit local conditions but through research initiatives, designers can understand what would be most suitable considering the circumstances of a region. If there is a marked effect of natural environments on the wellbeing of citizens, then biophilia can initiate a better approach in local architectural design for society.

Abstract:
M. Tech. Architecture.
This thesis presents the design of a secondary school in the township of Emzinoni, Mpumalanga. The thesis challenges the current school building morphology in terms of spatial layout and tectonics, with the intent of providing multi-use facilities accessible to both the school pupils and the surrounding community. The selected site in Emzinoni, like many township areas in South Africa, is almost devoid of any civic or public buildings or services, just the endless sprawl of small residential units and shacks with the random school rising two storeys above the surrounding context. With the large capital expenditure of building a new school, this project endeavours to show a school that is more than a facility for learning or imparting knowledge; a school that can be the centre of the community and a neighbourhood activity hub, providing services and activities to the total community, to benefit all.

Carless, Sarah. "The study of sensory stimulation as an architectural design tool : a proposed children's centre and community facility in Umlazi." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/8627.

Full text
Abstract:
Architecture is intended to house, shelter and define the framework within which human activity occurs. It is far more than purely functional and its vast impact on the physical, emotional and psychological aspects of its users should not be ignored. Unfortunately, much contemporary architecture has become driven by external appearances, pushing the boundaries of technology and engaging with the eyes. The sensory aspects of architecture that enhance the body's experience, have largely been neglected, much to the detriment of the human experience, as it is through the body that one perceives, engages and enjoys architectural spaces. This dissertation looks into a more appropriate response to architectural design that understands the significance of the sensory experience of the human body. Benefits of such an architectural theory are considered and the practical application of this approach to architectural design is discussed. Furthermore, this exploration is used to analyse children's experience of the built environment. Basic research recognises the importance of the environment on children's development; however, this knowledge is seldom applied to the design of children's spaces. The research undertakes to more fully examine children's development and the physical, sensory and psychological manner in which children engage with the built environment. The findings include proposed design approaches that suitably respond to this. The research culminates in an analysis of the sensory approach to architecture in the local context of KwaZulu-Natal. Conclusions are drawn from the research carried out through interviews, a review of literature, and analysis of case studies and precedents studies. The outcome of this dissertation is a set of recommendations, principles and an understanding of the criteria necessary to inform the design of a Children's Centre and Community Facility in Umlazi.

Abstract:
The urban architectural environment in modern day life places a variety of additional unnecessary stresses upon people which affects social interaction and well-being. This dissertation is aimed at developing an understanding of what social interaction and well-being is in architecture and how important it is to design architectural environments that enhance these two principles. The research investigates the benefits and design tools of a more appropriate approach to the built environment through the exploration of the theories of Biophilia, Image Of The City and New Urbanism. The theories seek to provide architects and the designers of the built environment with tools that can be used to create architectural environments that enhance social interaction and the well-being of building users. It further endeavours to highlight the destructive qualities that affect well-being and social interaction in the architectural environment on both a macro (city context) and a micro level (the building) to create an awareness in those responsible for the design of these environments and the impact they have on society. The designers of the built environment should consider the social and well-being needs of the people as this will convert architectural environments into spaces that have physical and physiological benefits to its users.

This thesis presents the argument that the concept of urban farming can help resolve the problem of the displacement of agriculture in distant locations from consumers, which either results in the escalation of food costs or the loss of the farmer's profit, which inevitably results in less food producers. The market place addresses the lack of formalised trading space, providing job opportunities for an increasing urban population, along a busy pedestrian route. The thesis concludes through the illustration of a design project from the resulting research, on a triangular city block on the periphery of Central Pretoria.

At present the South African olive oil industry is highly dependent on international imports due to local olive oil producers being unable to meet the local demand. The need for extra virgin olive oil has increased each year since people have become more aware of the health benefits of the product. This dissertation documents the design of an olive oil production facility near the foothills of the Draaiberg mountain range in the Touws River valley. Situated in close proximity to the Touws River railway station, the proposed architectural intervention responds to the current situation of neglected railway towns through the implementation of agri-tourism in the area. Public interest creates a platform for the market to educate the broader public about health benefits, which has caused a gradual, growth in the olive oil industry. This in turn shows that olive oil farms need a public interface, such as an information centre, a shop and tasting room to entice the consumer and create awareness of the quality level of olive oil South Africa has to offer. The aim of this thesis is to design an olive oil production facility, focusing on the production of extra virgin olive oil and relevant alternative products. The facility will not only function as an agricultural olive press for a private farming concern, but will also act as a community press facility to allow for continuous growth in the olive industry. One of the design objectives is to create a space for information and social interaction. The main building's size is informed by the size of the productive landscape and formulas were used to calculate the volume of oil produced per hectare. The production process can be followed by the visitor, giving rise to a linear building typology.

A substantial proportion of the African population is deprived of access to safe and reliable food. Many people in Tshwane currently live with long-term malnutrition, seeing that food insecurity is growing most rapidly in formal urban areas, referred to as food deserts, due to their limited access to food. Designing urban environments for local food security has become imperative. This dissertation presents the design of a research centre to promote a resilient urban food systems in Sunnyside, Pretoria. A combination of high- and low-intensity cultivation methods is integrated into the building to create a balance between optimised crop yield and community participation and education. The holistic integration of systems, people and the built environment aims to create a building that is not merely a machine for living, but a living machine.
