AbstractThe lichen vegetation of forty-five acid watercourses in England is described and related to ecological variables. The zonation scheme adopted for chalk and limestone streams that involves four overlapping bands of lichen vegetation related to length of submergence is also appropriate for this habitat. The flora involves around 90 species, a number of which are rarely recorded specialists. Evidence is presented that substratum chemistry is a more powerful ecological factor than water chemistry. An attempt has been made to relate the lichen flora to homogeneous stream segments from the

Human use of stream flow for water supply may increase the duration and/or frequency of dry periods in intermittent streams, but there is little information on the effect of this change on in-stream flora or fauna. To predict the effects of dry periods on stream biota, it is necessary to understand the relative roles of various sources of recolonization. A transplant experiment was used to test the hypothesis that the dry residual algal biofilm on stones in intermittent streams is an important source of algal growth when the streams are re-wetted. However, increases in floristic diversity have not been observed and reasons for this slow response are still unknown. One possible explanation might be the lack of colonist pools. The use of fertilizer products in agricultural crops is a beneficial source of supplementing the nutrients needed for the growth and development of both plants and an increase in agricultural production. However, often the fertilizer doses applied per hectare to agricultural crops are not respected. Failure to comply with the applied fertilizer doses will lead to the occurrence of negative phenomena for soil, environment and agricultural crops, implicitly for human and animal health. Increasing the fertilizer doses per hectare and not respecting them will lead to the occurrence of soil acidifi

Abstract:
Because of the scarcity of water on the Colorado Plateau and their disproportionately high use by flora and fauna, riparian areas were quickly identified as an ecosystem of concern for Northern Colorado Plateau Network (NCPN) parks during vital signs planning in 2003. Four vital signs were selected for riparian monitoring of wadeable streams: surface flow, groundwater dynamics, channel geomorphology, and riparian vegetation structure and composition. This monitoring protocol consists of a protocol narrative and 15 standard operating procedures (SOPs) for monitoring wadeable streams in NCPN par

Reproductive development is a critical determinant of agricultural yield. For species with unisexual flowers, floral secualdifferentation adds additional complexity, that can influenec productivity. The hormone ethylene has long, been known to play a primary role in sex determination in the Cucumis species cucumber (C. sativus) and melon (C. melo). Our objectives were to: (1) Determine critical sites of ethylene production and perception for sex determination; (2) Identify additional ethylene related genes associated with sex expression; and (3) Examine the role of environment ami prior fruit

The Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network has monitored vegetation at Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve for more than 20 years. Monitoring assists the preserve in managing the nearly 10,000-acre (4,047 ha) site by providing status and trends of vegetation and disturbance metrics. The site protects critical remnant tallgrass prairie as well as the ranching legacy of the Flint Hills region. Monitoring was conducted in 30 permanent sites across the western preserve. We assessed current and future climate trends, fire and grazing rates, and vegetation metrics, including ground cover, guild,
