Στην παρούσα εργασία μελετήθηκαν εννέα συνολικά ποτάμια της Δυτικής Ελλάδος (ΒΔ Ελλάδα, Πελοπόννησος). Έγινε καταγραφή των τύπων οικοτόπων κατά μήκος των ποταμών και περιγραφή της χλωριδικής σύνθεσης των φυτοκοινοτήτων τους. Μετά από σύγκριση, συνδυασμό και επεξεργασία των δεδομένων προέκυψε ένα θεωρητικό πρότυπο ποταμού. Στο πρότυπο αυτό παρουσιάζεται η κατά μήκος διάταξη των παρόχθιων τύπων οικοτόπων στις τρεις γεωμορφολογικές ενότητες ενός ποταμού (άνω ρους, μέσος ρους, κάτω ρους) όπως αυτή αναμένεται να παρατηρηθεί σε ένα αδιατάρακτο ποτάμιο οικοσύστημα.
