Abstract:
The distribution of diatoms was studied in three types of diatom communities (epiphytes, benthos and plankton) of a peat bog on the Pester plateau. The observed diatom flora inhabited all investigated communities, comprising in total 250 taxa in 53 genera. Among them, 45 taxa were new records for the Serbian diatom flora. Identified taxa belonged to different groups of algae, however alkaliphile diatoms were dominant. New ecological data for Encyonopsis minuta, Pinnularia isostauron and P. marchica are presented here. All the diatoms were documented by light micrographs, and brief notes on their morphology, distribution and ecology are provided.

Abstract:
Volcanic activity has a great impact on terrestrial ecosystems, including soil algae in general and diatoms in particular. To understand the influence of volcanoes on the biodiversity of diatoms, it is necessary to explore the flora of these microorganisms in regions with high volcanic activity, which includes the Kamchatka peninsula. During the study on diatoms in the soils of Mutnovsky and Gorely volcanoes of Kamchatka, 38 taxa were found. The Mutnovsky volcano diatom flora was more diverse and accounted for 35 taxa. Eunotia curtagrunowii, Humidophila contenta, and Pinnularia borealis were the dominant species. In the Gorely volcano, only 9 species were identified, with Caloneis bacillum and Pinnularia borealis prevailing in the samples. Overall, the genera Pinnularia and Eunotia were the most diverse in the studied area. The diatom flora of the studied volcanoes comprises mostly cosmopolitan small-sized taxa with a wide range of ecological plasticity. Our data confirm the high adaptive potential of diatom algae and add new knowledge about the ecology and biogeography of this group of microorganisms.

Abstract:
AbstractMeltwaters on the surface of glaciers have been identified as hot spots for microbial activity. Records indicate that cyanobacteria and green algae dominate the autotrophic assemblages found in the benthic debris in cryoconite holes. Diatoms are commonly recorded in lentic and lotic ecosystems within polar habitats and, in line with the ubiquity principle for microbial communities, potentially, diatoms should be frequently found in the cryoconite of supraglacial environments. In this study, we cultured debris from cryoconite material collected in Svalbard and Greenland, to promote the growth of diatoms. Diatom generic richness varied between 12 and 17 between sites and was ∼5-fold higher than previously reported. Cryoconite supported aerophytic, halophytic, epipelic and bryophilic diatoms, suggesting multiple origins of colonizing cells. Twenty-seven genera were cultured from material that had been frozen (–20°C) for >1 year, indicating their long-term cryotolerance. The diatom flora composition was similar to that recorded in relatively acidic arctic lakes of low conductivity, and bore similarities at the generic level to those from terrestrial/semi-terrestrial moss communities from both the Arctic and Antarctic. As glaciers retreat, the diatom cells residing in cryoconite have the potential to act as seeding agents for a variety of terrestrial and aquatic habitats in proglacial regions and beyond.

Abstract:
Phytobenthos includes bioindicator species and is widely used in water ecology studies. Diatoms constitute one of the most important groups of phytobenthos in streams. In particular, these organisms are good indicators in investigations related with determining of water quality in medium and long time. In this study, the epipelic diatom flora of the lower part of River Melet were investigated, the most important source of drinking water in Ordu city. The examination was performed periodically in March-November 2012 and total of 56 taxa were identified. Cymbellales (14 taxa) and Naviculales (16 taxa) ordo constituted 54% of diatom diversity. These were followed by Fragilariales (16%, 9 taxa) Bacillariales (14%, 8 taxa) Surirellales (9%, 5 taxa) Achnanthales (3%, 2 taxa) Eunotiales (2%, 1 taxa) and Melosirales (2%, 1 taxa), respectively. Diatome vulgaris, Melosira varians, Navicula gregaria, N. tripunctata and Nitzschia sigmoidea species were recorded as widespread and intense in the epipelic communities. These species are usually tolerant to organic pollution and are found in β-α- mesosaprobic conditions. According to the obtained results, the lower part of the Melet River has character from pollution towards moderate pollution. In other words, it has II-III. class water quality.

Abstract:
Since 2000, the entire Antarctic diatom flora is being revised using a more fine-grained taxonomy based on a better analysis and interpretation of the morphological and molecular observations. Despite the increased diatom research and efforts, the diversity and ecology of diatoms of lichen inhabiting flora of James Ross Island weren’t studied yet. To reveal the actual diatom diversity, samples were collected during February and March 2018 from lichens on the Ulu Peninsula, James Ross Island, a 2,450 km2 large island, situated in the north-western part of the Weddell Sea, close to the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. The analysis of 29 lichen samples revealed the presence of 56 diatom taxa belonging to 17 genera. The most abundant species were Luticola muticopsis, Hantzschia amphioxys f. muelleri, Pinnularia borealisvar.scalaris, Luticola aff. pusilla and Achnanthes muelleri. Biogeographically, the lichen-inhabiting diatom flora of the Ulu Peninsula is composed of cosmopolitan, Antarctic and endemic elements. The present study is the first focusing on the diversity of lichen-inhabiting diatom communities on James Ross Island, revealing the presence of a rather species rich diatom flora.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Subfossil diatoms analysis was employed to reconstruct past environmental changes in Lake Skaliska. This lake, presently a palaeolake, is located on a wide plain called the Skaliska Basin (northern part of Mazury Lake District, north-eastern Poland). Changes in terrestrial vegetation suggest that the initial phase of the lake was in the early Holocene. In the sediments a total of 176 diatom species belonging to 35 genera were identified. The majority of diatoms are alkaliphilous and alkalibiontic, occurring mainly in meso-eutrophic water. Diatom flora development suggests that the best conditions for diatom growth prevailed throughout the Boreal and in the early Atlantic, a suggestion supported by the increased frequency of planktonic diatoms living in nutrient-rich water. A water pH reconstruction (DIpH) based on diatoms points to alkalinity during the lake’s existence. Since roughly the mid-Atlantic the lake was shallowing, and at the beginning of the Subboreal peat sedimentation led to complete overgrowth of the lake.

Abstract:
Suncheonman Bay, Korea’s most representative estuary, is an invasive coastal wetland composed of 22.6 km2 of tidal flats surrounded by the Yeosu and Goheung Peninsulas. In January 2006, this region was registered in the Ramsar Convention list in Korea, representing the first registered wetland. Estuaries are generally known to have high species diversity. In particular, several studies have been conducted on planktonic and epipelic diatoms as primary producers. Suncheonman Bay has already been involved in many biological and geochemical studies, but fossil diatoms have not been evaluated. Therefore, we investigated fossil diatoms in Suncheonman Bay and introduced sub-fossil diatoms recorded in Korea. One sedimentary core has been extracted in 2018. We identified 87 diatom taxa from 52 genera in the SCW03 core sample. Of these, six species represent new records in Korea: Cymatonitzschia marina, Fallacia hodgeana, Navicula mannii, Metascolioneis tumida, Surirella recedens, and Thalassionema synedriforme. These six newly recorded diatom species were examined by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The ecological habitats for all the investigated taxa are presented.

Floristics of epiphytic diatoms in a patch of subtropical macroalgae The species composition of epiphytic diatom assemblages found on different taxa of subtropical macroalgae was determined. Samplings were carried out in a macroalgae bed located in Punta Roca Caimancito beach, B. C. S. in june and december 2001, and on april, may and july 2002, collecting the most frequent macroalgae taxa. The most conspicuous out of twelve macroalgae taxa were: Hydroclathrus clathrathus, Laurencia pacifica, L. johnstonii, Padina mexicana and P. caulescens. A total of 278 diatom taxa were recorded. This is the largest species richness recorded for this type of substrate, and out of which 44 are new records for the region.
Diatoms are microscopic algae which are widely used to monitor the ecological quality of strems and rivers. The regular methodologies are based on simpllified community models. In these models, only the invidual species responses to environment are accounted for.Testing the importance of complementary processes showed a significant effect of colonization dynamics, but only a slight effect of biotic relationships. These processes led us to considerate a more complex assemblage structure than the one usually assumed by the biomonitoring methodologies. Therefore we implemented both neural networks models and fuzzy logic methodologies, in order to refine French ecoregions and to describe relationships between species traits and environment

Abstract Fossil diatoms can be excellent indicators of the marine paleoenvironments. They have great potential for studies of marine plaeoceanography and provide insight into a variety of environmental conditions. The Core MD972144(19°36’N, 120°53’E) recovered from the South China Sea was examined for the changes in diatom abundance and assemblage composition based on taxonomy and morphology. A total of 245 diatom taxa were identified throughout the core. Among them, Chaetoceros spp., Thalassionema nitzschioides and Thalassiothrix longissima were the common taxa and their relative abundance ranged from 5% to 70%. The diatom assemblage in this core was mainly composed of tropical-subtropocal planktonic species, but it also contained a certain number of neritic and freshwater diatoms, 6-33% and 0-6%, respectively. The abundance failed to explain the variety of productivity due to the dilution of terrigenous materials. But its high value still implied the upwelling occurrence. The variations of relative abundance in the characteristic species of Kuroshio and upwelling indicators showed that productivity was lower during glacial periods, but higher during interglacial periods. There were strong varieties in abundance, species number, diversity index and species composition from stage 6 to stage 5. The trend of the diatom temperature index (Tw) corresponded with the oxygen isotope curves and its values were lower in glacial times, but higher in interglacial times. It meant that the sea surface temperature was lower in glacial times, but higher in interglacial times. Q-mode factor analysis was carried out to analyze the variations of diatom assemblage. It showed that Factor 1, representative of warm-water masses, accounted for 88.5% of the variance. Its loadings dominated over the interglacial periods and were synchronous with the curve of the diatom temperature index. The diatom assemblage of the Core MD972144 during the glacial periods was characterized by lower in the diatom temperature index and the relative abundance of the characteristic species of Kuroshio and upwelling indicators. It corresponded with the marine environments of reducing in the sea surface temperature and high productivity. On the contrary, during the interglacial periods it was characterized by higher in the diatom temperature index and the relative abundance of the characteristic species of Kuroshio and upwelling indicators. It also corresponded with the marine environments of raising in the sea surface temperature and high productivity.
