Every Local Sanitary Unit (USL) of the Tuscan Region was contacted to define screening variables, such as adequacy of the staff involved in prevention, smear technique, data collection and evaluation, laboratory quality control, and modalities of invitations to screening. The reported data show that 21 of 40 USL, but only 9 of 28 USL outside the Florence province (where a common screening program is performed), are performing active invitations to screening. The most serious staff inadequacies concern data evaluation and personnel performing the test. Sixteen of 28 USL outside Florence suggest

The company is able to provide centrifugal compressor equipment tailored to the user’s requests, with special reference to the oil & gas market. In order to provide this service, an archive of designs is available which can be adapted to different requirements: CFD is widely used to improve the turbomachinery performance, and on each new stage design extensive fluid dynamics test campaigns are routinely r

Abstract The use of Very Large Floating Structures, VLFS, may represent a strategic approach in order to cope with some of the future societal challenges arising from the impressive growth of the world population. In this article, the motivations of this perspective are briefly discussed, the main issues for the development of VLFS are summarized and a concept structural design based on building-blocks technology is proposed. A small-scale physical model was manufactured and tested in the wave-current flume of the Laboratory of Maritime Engineering, LABIMA, of the Florence University, Italy. T

The Engineering Department of the University of Perugia and the Architecture Department of the University of Florence have started a research project on the ancient city gates of Perugia, belonging to the Etruscan city, dating between the third and second centuries b.C., and to the subsequent city wall completed in the twelfth century. In this paper, focus is placed on three Etruscan gates - Porta Eburnea (also called Porta della Mandorla), Porta Cornea and Porta Trasimena – which have in common profound Middle Age transformations and further significant context changes following the loss of f

Abstract The aim of this work is to present the development and application of a measurement technique that allows to record internal heat transfer features of real components. In order to apply this method, based on similar approaches proposed in previous literature works, the component is initially heated up to a steady temperature, then a thermal transient is induced by injecting cool air in the internal cooling system. During this process, the external temperature evolution is recorded by means of an IR camera. Experimental data are then exploited to run a numerical procedure, based on a s

Abstract The development of predictive combustion models is more and more strategic in the design definition of gas turbine combustor. The Thickened Flame Model (TFM), despite its high computational cost, is one of the most accurate approach available in literature since it can naturally take into account the non-equilibrium effects into the flame brush (i.e., strain and heat losses) as well as preferential diffusion when hydrogen is employed. Conversely, the original formulation of this combustion model needs several adjustments to accommodate the properties of the mixture when different stre

In modern lean burn aero-engine combustors, highly swirling flow structures are adopted to control the fuel-air mixing and to provide the correct flame stabilization mechanisms. Aggressive swirl fields and high turbulence intensities are hence expected in the combustor-turbine interface. Moreover, to maximize the engine cycle efficiency, an accurate design of the high pressure nozzle cooling system must be pursued: in a film cooled nozzle the air taken from last compressor stages is ejected through discrete holes drilled on vane surfaces to provide a cold layer between hot gases and turbine co
