Abstract:
This chapter first describes the central place of bread in Jewish life. Breads of every shape and variety are made and served for the Sabbath, holidays, and daily consumption: rye breads in Eastern Europe and Russia; rice-flour breads where some of the Sephardi lived; wheat breads elsewhere. In ages past, bread-making was an essential skill passed down from mother to daughter. It has been called both a science and an art. The chapter also presents interviews with people at Kaufman's Bakery and Delicatessen, Pratzel's Bakery, Jake's Deli, Eli's Cheesecake Factory, Ella's Deli and Ice Cream Parlor, the Mustard Museum, and Morgan's Grill and Fish Market. Each one expressed incredible pride in what he or she does. And what they do goes beyond slavishly preserving Jewish food traditions, to innovating taste treats by adapting recipes, and, in many instances, adding new, exciting, items and experiences to their product lines. Not only that, but we discovered they really enjoy making quality foodstuffs for their customers, who, now more than ever before, include almost everyone.

Abstract:
This chapter sets out the theoretical framework of the book, and develops the hypotheses to be tested. It argues that the attitudes of MPs to party unity will be shaped by the career, electoral, and other political incentives they face, and so reflect the extent to which MPs’ experiences of the expectation to maintain party unity is positive or negative. It then develops three measurements of policy incentives to dissent in floor votes in multiparty legislatures, each corresponding to a different assumption about how MPs approach floor voting. Further, the chapter discusses the case selection and the quality of the data used in the book.

Abstract:
Urogynaecological problems are one of the most common reasons that women are referred to the hospital services, and can account for up to a fifth of the gynaecological surgery waiting list at any time. Pelvic floor problems can have a huge impact on the patient’s quality of life, and therefore should be managed appropriately. Succinct yet comprehensive, this new addition to the Oxford Specialist Handbooks in Obstetrics and Gynaecology series covers all aspects of pelvic floor function and dysfunction, and approaches to assessment and management in all compartments (the bladder, reproductive system, and bowel). Special chapters are dedicated to urogynaecological issues in pregnancy and childbirth, and also to the effects of age on the pelvic floor. Covering all material needed for those undertaking the RCOG advanced training skills module in urogynaecology and vaginal surgery, this is an invaluable guide for both senior general trainees in gynaecology, and subspecialty trainees in urogynaecology.

Abstract:
Urinary incontinence (UI) is a highly prevalent and bothersome problem that affects men and women of all ages. The aetiological spectrum of UI is wide, encompassing dysfunctions of the lower urinary tract, its neural control, the pelvic floor as well as other factors such as the side effects of pharmacotherapy. Although not life-threatening, UI frequently impacts upon the quality of life, psychological and emotional well-being of affected individuals. Additionally, UI imposes a tremendous economic burden on both the individual and the wider society in costs of nursing care, treatments, and lost productivity. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a broad overview of the epidemiology, aetiopathophysiology of UI, and to discuss the approach to the assessment, investigation, and initial management of the patient presenting with UI.

Abstract:
This book examines Teamsters Local 688's community stewards program, a nationally acclaimed initiative launched by Harold Gibbons and Ernest Calloway in St. Louis to advance their advocacy of working-class citizenship and total person unionism. Through the community stewards program, Gibbons and Calloway sought to develop new kinds of unionists whose workplace and civic lives were seamlessly integrated. In addressing the needs of the worker as a “total person,” the two men looked beyond the shop floor and attempted to influence political decisions “affect[ing] the common economic, social, and civic well-being” of the union member. Local 688's community stewards mounted a series of highly visible campaigns to improve the quality of life in St. Louis. These efforts included ballot initiatives, legal action, and direct worker engagement with city officials. This book explores how Gibbons and Calloway, despite their quite different personalities, forged a dynamic political alliance as they sought to claim the identity of “citizen” for themselves and the workers they represented.

Abstract:
This book assesses the impact of gender in shaping debates over birth control in the United States. While situating itself in the appropriate historical context, this book’s primary focus is on the controversies surrounding insurance coverage of contraception between Congress’s 2009 deliberations over the Affordable Care Act and the Supreme Court’s 2016 ruling in Zubik v. Burwell. Specifically, the book addresses three interrelated questions about the politics of the pill during this often contentious seven-year period: Who spoke? What did they say? Did it matter? In answering these questions, the book casts a wide net, examining legislative floor debates, committee hearings, statutory wording, amicus briefs, media coverage, Supreme Court rulings, and public opinion polls. Throughout this examination, the book emphasizes the ways in which contraception fit into broader conversations about morality, women’s agency, and reproductive health, and it considers how gender intersected with other identities (e.g., religion and partisanship), in driving media frames, policy narratives, and political attitudes. The book’s central argument is that who has a voice significantly impacts policy deliberation and outcomes. While women’s participation in contraception debates was limited by a lack of gender parity in the media, the legislatures, and the courts, women nevertheless shaped policy making on birth control in myriad and interconnected ways. Put simply, the inclusion and exclusion of women is essential to understanding the tenor, quantity, and quality of contraception debates across time, place, and venue.

Annesley, Claire, Karen Beckwith, and Susan Franceschet. Cabinets, Ministers, and Gender. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190069018.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Cabinets, Ministers, and Gender explores why men have been more likely than women to be appointed to cabinet, why gendered patterns of appointment vary cross-nationally, and why, over time, women’s inclusion in cabinets has grown significantly. The book is innovative in conceiving of cabinet formation as a gendered process governed by rules that empower and constrain presidents and prime ministers as selectors of cabinet ministers, and rules that prescribe, prohibit, and permit a range of criteria (experiential, affiliational, and representational) that qualify individuals for inclusion in cabinet. Focusing on seven country cases (Australia, Canada, Chile, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States) using three data sets—elite interviews, media data, and autobiographies—the book reveals the complex sets of rules governing cabinet formation in each country and demonstrates their gendered effects. The book shows how different types of rules empower and constrain selectors, and how these rules interact to create different opportunities and obstacles for women’s cabinet inclusion. The findings demonstrate how institutional change emerges from a complex iterative process through which political actors interpret and exploit ambiguity in rules to deviate from past practices of appointing mostly male cabinets. These selectors help to develop new rules about women’s inclusion, which constrain future leaders in assembling their cabinet. The authors coin the term “concrete floor” to capture the process by which minimum levels for women’s cabinet inclusion are established and become locked in over time, explaining how competing rules for cabinet appointments, changing norms, and women’s mobilization in political parties shape outcomes.

Abstract:
The aim of the e-book is to present the theoretical, cognitive and practical aspects of the essence and complexity of operational management in a production company. The presented modern production methods together with the challenges and problems of contemporary enterprises should better help to understand the issues of sustainable development, with particular emphasis on waste. The book consists of six chapters devoted to relevant and topic issues relating to the core business of an industrial enterprise. Chapter 1 The nature of the industrial enterprise is an introduction to further considerations and deals with the essence of the basic aspects of the company. Both popular and less known definitions of an enterprise, its features, functions and principles of operation are presented. An important part of the chapter is the presentation and formulation of strategic, tactical and operational goals. Moreover, the division of enterprises is presented with the use of various criteria and the features of the industrial market, which make it distinct. Chapter 2 The operational management evolution and its role in the industrial enterprise discusses the evolution and concept of production and operational management. The management levels were also presented, indicating their most important functions. An integral part of the chapter is the essence of the production system, viewed through the prism of the five elements. Chapter 3 Functions and role in operations management presents the issues concerning the organization of production processes, production capacity and inventory management. This part also presents considerations on cooperation and collaboration between enterprises in the process of creating value. Chapter 4 Traditional methods used in operational activities focuses on methods such as benchmarking, outsourcing, core competences, JIT, MPR I and MRP II, as well as TQM and kaizen. Knowledge of these methods should contribute to understanding the activities of modern enterprises, the way of company functioning, the realization of production activities, as well as aspects related to building a competitive position. Chapter 5 Modern methods used in production-operations management discusses the less common and less frequently used production methods, based on a modern and innovative approach. In particular, it was focused on: Shop Floor Control and cooperative manufacturing, environment-conscious manufacturing (ECM) and life-cycle assessment ( LCA), waste management and recycling, Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), virtual enterprise, World Class Manufacturing (WCM), Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and House of Quality (HOQ), theory of constraints (TOC), Drum Buffer Rope (DBR), group technology (GT) and cellular manufacturing (CM), Demand Chain Management and competitive intelligence (CI). In the last section discusses: the role of sustainable statistical process control and Computer-Aided Process Planning in context formatting of information management. Chapter 6 Problems of sustainable development and challenges related to production and operations management describes the problem and challenges related to production and operations activities. In particular, attention was paid to the threats related to changes in global warming, the growing scale of waste, or the processes of globalization. It was pointed out that the emerging problem may be both a threat and a chance for the development of enterprises. An integral part of the chapter are also considerations on technical progress, innovation and the importance of human capital in operational activities.
