Abstract:
Flows and Frictions in Trans-Himalayan Spaces traces movements and connections in a region known for its formidable obstacles to mobility. Eight original essays and a conceptual introduction engage with questions of networks and interconnection between people across a bordered landscape. Mobility among the extremely varied ecologies of south-western China, Myanmar and north-eastern India, with their rugged terrain, high mountains, monsoon-fed rivers and marshy lowlands, is certainly subject to friction. But today, harsh political realities have created hard borders and fractured this trans-Himalayan terrain. However, the closely researched chapters in this book demonstrate that these borders have not prevented an abundance of movements, connections and flows. Mobility has always coexisted with friction here, but this coexistence has been unsettled, giving this space its historical shape and its contemporary dynamism. Introducing the concept of the ‘corridor’ as an analytical framework, this collection investigates mobility and flows in this unique socio-political landscape.

Succi, Sauro. Flows at Moderate Reynolds Numbers. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199592357.003.0018.

Abstract:
This chapter presents the application of LBE to flows at moderate Reynolds numbers, typically hundreds to thousands. This is an important area of theoretical and applied fluid mechanics, one that relates, for instance, to the onset of nonlinear instabilities and their effects on the transport properties of the unsteady flow configuration. The regime of Reynolds numbers at which these instabilities take place is usually not very high, of the order of thousands, hence basically within reach of present day computer capabilities. Nonetheless, following the full evolution of these transitional flows requires very long-time integrations with short time-steps, which command substantial computational power. Therefore, efficient numerical methods are in great demand. Also of major interest are steady-state or pulsatile flows at moderate Reynolds numbers in complex geometries, such as they occur, for instance, in hemodynamic applications. The application of LBE to such flows will also briefly be mentioned

Abstract:
Contemporary understandings of the drivers suggest that gender based violence is related much more to sociological factors and power relations than to individual psychology or culture—although it is transmitted through mentalities of gender regimes that organize ideologies and practice of gender roles and dominance. In this chapter, we will review the lessons learned from a generation of human rights scholarship on reforming such power relations. We will analyze why violence against women requires additional forms of action that flow from literature on expanding rights, private wrongs, rights interdependence, intersectionality, and distinct patterns of response to different syndromes of violation and gender regime locations.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the growing capacity of the European Court to fulfill its role as the omnilateral trustee for the cosmopolitan legal order, and the constitutional court of the regime. In conjunction with state officials and the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, the Court has developed inter-related mechanisms of coordination designed to enhance the regime’s effectiveness in response to a chronically overloaded docket, and domestic failures in protection. The result has been a steady reinforcement of the Court’s powers of trusteeship: to manage the flow of individual applications; to give its important rulings precedential effect; to issue injunctions; and to identify and supervise the reforms necessary to close gaps in domestic systems of constitutional justice.
