Abstract:
This thesis is about information flow and customer service at Besam Production AB´s transport department. The focus of this thesis is to study the daily routines at the transport department regarding information flow and customer service both to the customers and to the forwarder. And how the information flow can be changed to be more efficient, save time and how to make this to an advantage against theirs competitors, is also studied. Like vise the customer service that Besam Production today is offering their customer at the transportation point and witch improvements that can be carried out. In the chapter where the current situation the daily work and situation for the transport department is addressed. Especially the situations regarding information flow to and from the daily used forwarder, Geologistics, and the information flow that today exist between the transport department and daughter-companies/end customers. In this chapter it’s also addressed witch kind of customer service that Besam Production AB today offers with their transport and what kind of customer service that Besam Production AB today is receiving bfrom their forwarder. In the literature study different forms of information flow and the importance of the information quality and contains, is studied. In this chapter different forms of customer service and how important the opinion of the customer is, is also studied. The result of the analysis between the chapters, current situation and literature study is for show in the conclusions’ chapter. The most important results in this thesis indicate that major improvements can be carried out within the transportation department in both areas. An example of this is that the greatest information flow today is transferred with fax. If the information flow instead was transferred electronically, the time saved could be used for customer service that today is not developed enough.

Abstract:

In an information system which includes plenty of information services, we are always seeking a solution to enhance efficiency and reusability. Emergency medical service system is a classic information system using application integration in which the requirement of information flow transmissions is extremely necessary. We should always ensure this system is running in best condition with highest efficiency and reusability since the efficiency in the system directly affects human life.

The aim of this thesis is to analysis emergency medical system in both qualitative and quantitative ways. Another aim of this thesis is to suggest a method to judge the information flow through the analysis for the system efficiency and the correlations between information flow traffic and system applications.

The result is that system is a main platform integrated five information services. Each of them provides different unattached functions while they are all based on unified information resources. The system efficiency can be judged by a method called Performance Evaluation, the correlation can be judged by multi-factorial analysis of variance method.

Abstract:
In complex information flows where a lot of varied data is transmitted through many companies and divisions, incidents will occur. When Visma Spcs had an incident where invoices sent from Visma to Visma's customers were duplicated and the service meant to receive the transactions did not handle the duplicates properly. They decided that the receiver service was to be upgraded to prevent this incident from happening again, as well as fixing some other issues the service had had. Incidents like this one must be investigated and a solution must be implemented to decrease the likelihood that similar incidents will happen again. In this report, the reader will see examples on how this can be handled and the benefits of tackling technical debt, along with how much more complicated the solutions might get if the service is not allowed to be taken offline.

Garza, Octavio Armando. "Food service establishment wastewater characterization and management practice evaluation." Texas A&M University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/3220.

Full text
Abstract:
Food service establishments that use onsite wastewater treatment systems are experiencing hydraulic and organic overloading of pretreatment systems and/or drain fields. Design guidelines for these systems are typically provided in State regulations and based on residential hydraulic applications. For the purposes of this research, hydraulic loading indicates the daily flow of water directed to the wastewater system. Organic loading refers to the composition of the wastewater as quantified by five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total fats, oils and greases (FOG), and total suspended solids (TSS). The first part of this study included an analysis of the central tendencies of analytical data of four wastewater parameters from 28 restaurants representing a broad spectrum of restaurant types. Field sampling consisted of two sets of grab samples collected from each restaurant for six consecutive days at approximately the same time each day. These sets were collected approximately two weeks apart. The numerical data included BOD5, FOG, and TSS. The fourth parameter evaluated was daily flow. Data exploration and statistical analyses of the numerical data from the 28 restaurants was performed with the standard gamma probability distribution model in ExcelTM and used to determine inferences of the analytical data. The analysis shows higher hydraulic and organic values for restaurant wastewater than residential wastewater. The second part of the study included a statistical analysis of restaurant management practices and primary cuisine types and their influence on BOD5, FOG, TSS, and daily flow to determine if management practices and/or cuisine types may be influencing wastewater composition and flow. A self-reporting survey was utilized to collect management practice and cuisine type information. Survey response information and analytical data were entered into an ExcelTM spreadsheet and subsequently incorporated into SASTM statistical software for statistical analysis. Analysis indicated that the number of seats in a restaurant, use of self-serve salad bars, and primary cuisine types are statistically significant indicators of wastewater characteristics.

Johnson, Pamela Christine. "Bicycle Level of Service: Where are the Gaps in Bicycle Flow Measures?" PDXScholar, 2014. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/1975.

Full text
Abstract:
Bicycle use is increasing in many parts of the U.S. Local and regional governments have set ambitious bicycle mode share goals as part of their strategy to curb greenhouse gas emissions and relieve traffic congestion. In particular, Portland, Oregon has set a 25% mode share goal for 2030 (PBOT 2010). Currently bicycle mode share in Portland is 6.1% of all trips. Other cities and regional planning organizations are also setting ambitious bicycle mode share goals and increasing bicycle facilities and programs to encourage bicycling. Increases in bicycle mode share are being encouraged to increase. However, cities with higher-than-average bicycle mode share are beginning to experience locations with bicycle traffic congestion, especially during peak commute hours. Today, there are no established methods are used to describe or measure bicycle traffic flows. In the 1960s, the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) introduced Level of Service (LOS) measurements to describe traffic flow and capacity of motor vehicles on highways using an A-to-F grading system; "A" describes free flow traffic with no maneuvering constraints for the driver and an "F" grade corresponds to over capacity situations in which traffic flow breaks down or becomes "jammed". LOS metrics were expanded to highway and road facilities, operations and design. In the 1990s, the HCM introduced LOS measurements for transit, pedestrians, and bicycles. Today, there are many well established and emerging bicycle level of service (BLOS) methods that measure the stress, comfort and perception of safety of bicycle facilities. However, it was been assumed that bicycle traffic volumes are low and do not warrant the use of a LOS measure for bicycle capacity and traffic flow. There are few BLOS methods that take bicycle flow into consideration, except for in the case of separated bicycle and bicycle-pedestrian paths. This thesis investigated the state of BLOS capacity methods that use bicycle volumes as a variable. The existing methods were applied to bicycle facility elements along a corridor that experiences high bicycle volumes in Portland, Oregon. Using data from the study corridor, BLOS was calculated and a sensitivity analysis was applied to each of the methods to determine how sensitive the models are to each of the variables used. An intercept survey was conducted to compare the BLOS capacity scores calculated for the corridor with the users' perception. In addition, 2030 bicycle mode share for the study corridor was estimated and the implications of increased future bicycle congestion were discussed. Gaps in the BLOS methods, limitations of the thesis study and future research were summarized. In general, the existing methods for BLOS capacity are intended for separated paths; they are not appropriate for existing high traffic flow facilities. Most of the BLOS traffic flow methods that have been developed are most sensitive to bicycle volumes. Some of these models may be a good starting point to improve BLOS capacity and traffic flow measures for high bicycle volume locations. Without the tools to measure and evaluate the patterns of bicycle capacity and traffic flow, it will be difficult to monitor and mitigate bicycle congestion and to plan for efficient bicycle facilities in the future. This report concludes that it is now time to develop new BLOS capacity measures that address bicycle traffic flow.

Littlejohn, Paul Stephen. "Adaptive flow management of multimedia data with a variable quality of service." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1004863.

Full text
Abstract:
Much of the current research involving the delivery of multimedia data focuses on the need to maintain a constant Quality of Service (QoS) throughout the lifetime of the connection. Delivery of a constant QoS requires that a guaranteed bandwidth is available for the entire connection. Techniques, such as resource reservation, are able to provide for this. These approaches work well across networks that are fairly homogeneous, and which have sufficient resources to sustain the guarantees, but are not currently viable over either heterogeneous or unreliable networks. To cater for the great number of networks (including the Internet) which do not conform to the ideal conditions required by constant Quality of Service mechanisms, this thesis proposes a different approach, that of dynamically adjusting the QoS in response to changing network conditions. Instead of optimizing the Quality of Service, the approach used in this thesis seeks to ensure the delivery of the information, at the best possible quality, as determined by the carrying ability of the poorest segment in the network link. To illustrate and examine this model, a service-adaptive system is described, which allows for the streaming of multimedia audio data across a network using the RealTime Transport Protocol. This application continually adjusts its service requests in response to the current network conditions. A client/server model is outlined whereby the server attempts to provide scalable media content, in this case audio data, to a client at the highest possible Quality of Service. The thesis presents and evaluates a number of renegotiation methods for adjusting the Quality of Service between the client and server. An A djusted QoS renegotiation method algorithm is suggested, which delivers the best possible quality, within an acceptable loss boundary.

Low, Nicholas Mark. "Exploring how organisations design for customer experience in non-hedonic service contexts." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/32383.

Full text
Abstract:
Customer experience is one strategic option for organisations wishing to differentiate their service offering. Little research however has been conducted to explain how service design and management practices influence customer experience in non-hedonic contexts, settings in which the objectives for the design of the delivery system are not experiential. The objective of this research is to address this gap in academic knowledge. The conceptual framework used as the basis of the empirical research demonstrates how four experience mechanism constructs, incorporated into the design of the delivery system, facilitate the customer’s involvement in the delivery of the service and influence how they perceive the experience that emerges as a result. To explore the relevance of the framework two case studies were conducted. Data was collected principally through interviews with employees working at various levels throughout the organisations hierarchy and with customers. Observations and secondary source material also provided additional evidence. The thesis provides an original and distinct contribution to knowledge, through three main findings: Firstly, the research found evidence that the conceptual framework was relevant to the design of the delivery system and in customers’ perception of their experience. This challenges assumptions in existing literature that experience might not be a relevant design consideration in non-hedonic service contexts. Secondly, the findings provide a point of distinction between experiences in hedonic and non-hedonic contexts. Finally the study extends experience design theory demonstrating how in the contexts studied, the experience mechanisms act as antecedents for the experience a customer perceives. Whilst conducting only two case studies limits the impact of the findings, the propositions formulated to explain the key themes identified, can be used as a vehicle through which future quantitative research can be carried out, therefore extending the generalisability of the study beyond the contexts studied.

Full text
Abstract:
An algorithm for heat transfer prediction of in-service welding operations in a forcedflow of fluid is presented. The algorithm presented is derived from Rosenthal’s 3D heatflow equation and boundary layer approximations. This was possible by the introductionof an apparent thermal conductivity kPL, which is a function of the boundary layer’s heattransfer coefficient f and the base material’s thickness . This implies that a weldcooling time ΔtT1 /T2 in a forced flow of fluid can now be calculated by an ordinaryengineering calculator and thus enabling suitable welding parameters to be determined. The magnitude of kPLf , was established by regression analysis of results from aparametric finite element analysis series of a total number of 112 numerical simulations.Furthermore, the result of the regression analysis was validated and verified by a weldingexperiment series accomplished on an in-house designed and constructed in-servicewelding rig. The principle design of the welding rig as well as its instrumentation, a PCbased Data Acquisition system, is described. In addition, a method to measure the weldmetals cooling time ΔtT1 /T2 by means of thermocouple elements is described. Finally, the algorithm presented in this study proved feasible for industrial in-service weldingoperations of fine-grained Carbon and Carbon–Manganese steels with a maximum Carbon Equivalent (IIW) (CE) of 0.32.

Singaravelu, Lenin. "End-to-End Security of Information Flow in Web-based Applications." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/16142.

Full text
Abstract:
Web-based applications and services are increasingly being used in security-sensitive tasks. Current security protocols rely on two crucial assumptions to protect the confidentiality and integrity of information: First, they assume that end-point software used to handle security-sensitive information is free from vulnerabilities. Secondly, these protocols assume point-to-point communication between a client and a service provider. However, these assumptions do not hold true with large and complex vulnerable end point software such as the Internet browser or web services middleware or in web service compositions where there can be multiple value-adding service providers interposed between a client and the original service provider. To address the problem of large and complex end-point software, we present the AppCore approach which uses manual analysis of information flow, as opposed to purely automated approaches, to split existing software into two parts: a simplified trusted part that handles security-sensitive information and a legacy, untrusted part that handles non-sensitive information without access to sensitive information. Not only does this approach avoid many common and well-known vulnerabilities in the legacy software that compromised sensitive information, it also greatly reduces the size and complexity of the trusted code, thereby making exhaustive testing or formal analysis more feasible. We demonstrate the feasibility of the AppCore approach by constructing AppCores for two real-world applications: a client-side AppCore for https-based applications and an AppCore for web service platforms. Our evaluation shows that security improvements and complexity reductions (over a factor of five) can be attained with minimal modifications to existing software (a few tens of lines of code, and proxy settings of a browser) and an acceptable performance overhead (a few percent). To protect the communication of sensitive information between the clients and service providers in web service compositions, we present an end-to-end security framework called WS-FESec that provides end-to-end security properties even in the presence of misbehaving intermediate services. We show that WS-FESec is flexible enough to support the lattice model of secure information flow and it guarantees precise security properties for each component service at a modest cost of a few milliseconds per signature or encrypted field.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with the realization of a Quality of Service architecture that breaks with traditional approaches, and allows end-to-end performance guarantees for the traffic. The Flow-Aware Networking approach considers the traffic at the flow level, for which simple but robust traffic models lead to a fundamental relationship between the resources offered by the network, the demand and the obtained performance. In particular, the Cross-Protect router architecture proposes the combination of a fair queueing scheduler, and an admission control so as to implicitly ensure the performance of both streaming and elastic flows, without the need for any marking nor signalization protocol. In such a context, we consider the sizing of router buffers, the introduction of fair queueing scheduling inside the network and its impact on the performance of TCP protocols, as well as the realization of a suitable admission control algorithm. Finally, a declination of this architecture for the access network is proposed

Morrey, Nicola. "Enacting product-service business models : the role of lean thinking." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2013. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/13591.

Abstract:
As competitively tendering for work is becoming increasingly difficult, and with profit margins reducing, UK construction companies are looking to differentiate their offering to clients. Safely delivering on time, within budget and to the required quality standard is no longer a differentiator in a market where clients are demanding increased value, building information modelling and life cycle provision. Construction companies are therefore looking to extend their activities into business consulting, financing and operational services, which will provide new sources of revenue in addition to their core production activities. This holistic service should provide solutions that meet their client s business needs, not just their building needs, ultimately resulting in long-standing relationships that over time yield a more predictable, long-term return. Over half of the top 20 UK construction companies, by turnover, have stated their intent to provide solutions to their clients - the case study organisation in which this research has been carried out is one of those companies. Part of a group of companies, the case study company, Shepherd Construction Ltd (SCL), has a vision to deliver integrated solutions to their clients, with the ultimate aim being that companies across the group can pool their expertise and deliver a service offering unique to the industry. Existing literature states the characteristics that integrated solutions providers need to possess, and proposes models for how an organisation needs to structure itself to deliver a service. However, the applicability of these models to SCL was unknown, and along with current literature on how to enact the transition pathway being vague, highlighted an area for investigation. Since the aim of integrated solutions provision is the delivery of a service to the client that adds value, it was proposed that lean thinking could provide a means of enacting the P-S transition: the starting point for lean thinking is value (Womack & Jones, 2003). Lean thinking principles (Womack & Jones, 2003) state that value needs to flow through the value stream the series of actions that transform inputs into the completed output raising the further proposition that flow is required through the stages of the integrated solutions lifecycle (the value stream) in order to successfully deliver all aspects of the client s value proposition, i.e. the desired solution. As a long established main-contractor, or product provider, SCL s challenge to transition from products-to-services was set against a backdrop of inconsistent performance and loss of continuity of service at crucial pinch-points in the delivery process. The action research carried out therefore sought to understand these problems and develop practices based on lean thinking that could be implemented in the company to enable consistent delivery of integrated solutions, i.e. enable the products-to-service transition, and in doing so provide the basis for the wider group vision. An abductive approach was taken to the research strategy; the experiences of the participants involved in the changes prompted by the action research process were used to inform the development of new theories and practices, and evaluate them once implemented. The methods used for collecting data and accounting for the experiences of people in the company included observation, both participant and non-participant, semi-structured interviews and analysis of company records. The research findings show that lean thinking has a role to play in enabling an organisation to transition from the provision of products to services. Standard processes and tools, based on lean thinking and developed through the action research framework, are shown to be the basis for consistent and repeatable performance within the phases of the integrated solutions lifecycle. Flow of information through and between phases of the lifecycle is then shown to be essential to ensuring the client s value proposition is realised and information is not lost during the transitions between lifecycle phases. The operational framework for service delivery , one of the practices developed, itself a form of standardised work, draws on lean thinking to provide a structured, yet flexible, means of developing a plan for service delivery that is focused on the client and ensuring the client s definition of value flows through the integrated solutions value stream and is therefore continually understood, and ultimately delivered, by the whole team as the project progresses. The practices developed through the research the standard company management system, operational framework for service delivery , service delivery plan and maturity assessment are shown to have improved consistency and company performance, and to have contributed to improved customer satisfaction (the ultimate aim of delivering a service) such that the company is starting to be perceived in the marketplace as an integrated solutions provider. This research also contributes to existing theory by evidencing that the transition pathway from products-to-services isn t as smooth as current literature portrays. In trying to implement current models in a construction setting, the products-to-service transition has been problematised and deficiencies in existing characteristics and models identified. Along with showing that lean thinking provides a theoretical framework for enacting the products-to-service transition, the hybrid model of the integrated solutions lifecycle developed, along with the maturity assessment, provide new theoretical insights, such as the need for feedback loops between all phases of the lifecycle.

Abstract:
The following study examines the needs music consumers have in relation to the streamingservices, based on the war going on on the streaming market, as well as in the three currentstreaming services Spotify, Deezer and Apple Music. The study examines the music consumers (twelve to 35 years old) unconscious needs that the music streaming service must meet, and how the relationship is shaped between these needs and the music consumer's choice of streaming service. The study has through a qualitative approach, where focus groups and one semi-structured interview formed the basis of empirical data collection, come to the conclusion that the music consumer has two unconscious needs: personalisation and self-recognition in the streaming service, as well as the need for the streaming service to allow the music consumers to live in the stream, in flow with the stream of music. The relationship between these unconscious needs and the choice of streaming service, shows that the music consumer is using the streaming service that satisfies their unconscious needs, but does not replace the service on the basis of their unconscious needs since the consumer do not know these needs themselves.

Abstract:
With the emergence of various applications that have different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, the capability of a network to support QoS becomes more and more important and necessary. This dissertation explores QoS in Cognitive Packet Networks (CPN) by using adaptive routing, flow and congestion control. We present a detailed description and analysis of our proposed routing algorithms based on single and multiple QoS constraints. An online estimation of packet loss rate over a path is introduced. We implement and evaluate the adaptive routing scheme in an experimental CPN test-bed. Our experiments support our claims that the users can achieve their desired best-effort QoS through this routing scheme. We also propose a QoS-based flow and congestion control scheme that is built in the transport layer and specially designed to work with CPN to support users' QoS while remaining friendly to TCP. Theoretical models and experimental analysis are presented. Finally we experimentally demonstrate that the proposed flow and congestion control scheme can effectively control the input flows, react to the congestion and work with our proposed adaptive routing scheme to achieve users' QoS.

Maziya, Lwazi Enock. "Access and information flow control to secure mobile web service compositions in resource constrained environments." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/20003.

Full text
Abstract:
The growing use of mobile web services such as electronic health records systems and applications like twitter, Facebook has increased interest in robust mechanisms for ensuring security for such information sharing services. Common security mechanisms such as access control and information flow control are either restrictive or weak in that they prevent applications from sharing data usefully, and/or allow private information leaks when used independently. Typically, when services are composed there is a resource that some or all of the services involved in the composition need to share. However, during service composition security problems arise because the resulting service is made up of different services from different security domains. A key issue that arises and that we address in this thesis is that of enforcing secure information flow control during service composition to prevent illegal access and propagation of information between the participating services. This thesis describes a model that combines access control and information flow control in one framework. We specifically consider a case study of an e-health service application, and consider how constraints like location and context dependencies impact on authentication and authorization. Furthermore, we consider how data sharing applications such as the e-health service application handle issues of unauthorized users and insecure propagation of information in resource constrained environments¹. Our framework addresses this issue of illegitimate information access and propagation by making use of the concept of program dependence graphs (PDGs). Program dependence graphs use path conditions as necessary conditions for secure information flow control. The advantage of this approach to securing information sharing is that, information is only propagated if the criteria for data sharing are verified. Our solution proposes or offers good performance, fast authentication taking into account bandwidth limitations. A security analysis shows the theoretical improvements our scheme offers. Results obtained confirm that the framework accommodates the CIA-triad (which is the confidentiality, integrity and availability model designed to guide policies of information security) of our work and can be used to motivate further research work in this field.

Abstract:
Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) are becoming increasingly important because of their unique characteristics of connectivity. Several delay sensitive applications are starting to appear in these kinds of networks. Therefore, an issue in concern is to guarantee Quality of Service (QoS) in such constantly changing communication environment. The classical QoS aware solutions that have been used till now in the wired and infrastructure wireless networks are unable to achieve the necessary performance in the MANETs. The specialized protocols designed for multihop ad hoc networks offer basic connectivity with limited delay awareness and the mobility factor in the MANETs makes them even more unsuitable for use. Several protocols and solutions have been emerging in almost every layer in the protocol stack. The majority of the research efforts agree on the fact that in such dynamic environment in order to optimize the performance of the protocols, there is the need for additional information about the status of the network to be available. Hence, many cross layer design approaches appeared in the scene. Cross layer design has major advantages and the necessity to utilize such a design is definite. However, cross layer design conceals risks like architecture instability and design inflexibility. The aggressive use of cross layer design results in excessive increase of the cost of deployment and complicates both maintenance and upgrade of the network. The use of autonomous protocols like bio-inspired mechanisms and algorithms that are resilient on cross layer information unavailability, are able to reduce the dependence on cross layer design. In addition, properties like the prediction of the dynamic conditions and the adaptation to them are quite important characteristics. The design of a routing decision algorithm based on Bayesian Inference for the prediction of the path quality is proposed here. The accurate prediction capabilities and the efficient use of the plethora of cross layer information are presented. Furthermore, an adaptive mechanism based on the Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used to control the flow of the data in the transport layer. The aforementioned flow control mechanism inherits GA’s optimization capabilities without the need of knowing any details about the network conditions, thus, reducing the cross layer information dependence. Finally, is illustrated how Bayesian Inference can be used to suggest configuration parameter values to the other protocols in different layers in order to improve their performance.

Abstract:
Hybridisation, polyploidy and asexual (apomictic) reproduction have given rise to high genetic diversity and taxonomic complexity in Avon Gorge Sorbus. Sorbus aria (a sexual diploid species) in particular has been implicated as a primary contributor to Sorbus diversification through hybridisations with polyploid taxa. It may also play a major role in the reproductive success of apomictic taxa by acting as pollen parent for pseudogamy (the partly-sexual formation of endosperm in asexual seed). The hypothesis was that S. aria acts as the primary pollen parent for endemic pseudogamous Sorbus taxa and in doing so facilitates evolutionary diversification of Sorbus in the Avon Gorge through rare inter-taxon hybridisation. Observations of flowering periods and insect pollinators showed that intra-generic synchronous flowering and the use of generalist pollinators allow for the movement of pollen among Sorbus flowers and the occurrence of inter-taxon mating events between Sorbus taxa growing in the Gorge. Pollination experiments, combined with molecular marker analyses of adults and progeny, showed that outcrossing occurs in the sexual diploids, which may encourage inter-taxon hybridisation. The tetraploid taxa were found to reproduce by apomixis and pseudogamy with self-compatibility which together are advantageous in the perpetuation of these taxa. The triploids were also found to be apomictic and pseudogamous, but they are self-incompatible and rely on inter-taxon pollen for seed set. A lack of hybrid progeny from open pollinations indicated hybridisation occurs rarely in the natural populations. Genotyping and flow cytometric analyses of endosperm in seeds from triploid taxa provided conclusive evidence that diploid S. aria is involved in their reproductive success as a pseudogamous pollen parent. Seed viability testing showed low seed fertility in the polyploids compared to S. aria, suggesting new polyploids may struggle to establish populations. Finally, in light of current conservation concerns for local endemic Sorbus, research-based recommendations are made to provide a foundation for conservation strategies that aim to protect rare, endemic Sorbus taxa, Sorbus taxonomic complexity and the evolutionary processes that drive Sorbus diversification in the Avon Gorge.

Deshpande, Vinit Vinod. "Evaluating the Impacts of Transit Signal Priority Strategies on Traffic Flow Characteristics:Case Study along U.S.1, Fairfax County, Virginia." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/31319.

Full text
Abstract:
Transportation engineers and planners worldwide are faced with the challenge of improving transit services in urban areas using low cost means. Transit signal priority is considered to be an effective way to improve transit service reliability and efficiency. In light of the interest in testing and deploying transit signal priority on a major arterial in Northern Virginia, this research focuses on the impacts of transit signal priority in the U.S.1 corridor in Fairfax County in terms of benefits to transit and impacts on other traffic. Using a simulation tool, VISSIM, these impacts were assessed considering a ten second green extension priority strategy. The results of the simulation analysis indicated that the Fairfax Connector buses benefit from the green extension strategy with little to no impact on the other non-transit traffic. Overall, improvements of 3.61% were found for bus service reliability and 2.64% for bus efficiency, while negative impacts were found in the form of increases in queue lengths on side streets by a maximum value of approximately one vehicle. Because this research has provided a foundation for the evaluation of transit signal priority for VDOT and Fairfax County engineers and planners, future research can build upon this effort. Areas identified for future research include the provision of priority for the entire bus route; combination of emergency preemption and transit priority strategies; evaluation of other priority strategies using system- wide priority concepts; and the impacts of priority strategies in monetary terms.

Giallorenzo, Saverio. "Workflow Patterns for Service Oriented Computing in JOLIE." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2012. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/3870/.

Full text
Abstract:

Zaichenkov, Pavel. "A method for consistent non-local configuration of component interfaces." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/19053.

Full text
Abstract:
Service-oriented computing is a popular technology that facilitates the development of large-scale distributed systems. However, the modular composition and flexible coordination of such applications still remains challenging for the following reasons: 1) the services are provided as loosely coupled black boxes that only expose their interfaces to the environment; 2) interacting services are not usually known in advance: web services are dynamically chosen to fulfil certain roles and are often replaced by services with a similar functionality; 3) the nature of the service-based application is decentralised. Loose coupling of web services is often lost when it comes to the construction of an application from services. The reason is that the object-oriented paradigm, which is widely used in the implementation of web services, does not provide a mechanism for service interface self-tuning. As a result, it negatively impacts upon the interoperability of web services. In this dissertation we present a formal method for automatic service configuration in the presence of subtyping, polymorphism, and flow inheritance. This is a challenging problem. On the one hand, the interface description language must be flexible enough to maintain service compatibility in various contexts without any modification to the service itself. On the other hand, the composition of interfaces in a distributed environment must be provably consistent. Our method is based on constraint satisfaction and Boolean satisfiability. First, we define a language for specifying service interfaces in a generic form, which is compatible with a variety of contexts. The language provides support for parametric polymorphism, Boolean variables, which are used to control dependencies between any elements of interface collections, and flow inheritance using extensible records and variants. We implemented the method as a constraint satisfaction solver. In addition to this, we present a protocol for interface configuration. It specifies a sequence of steps that leads to the generation of context-specific service libraries from generic services. Furthermore, we developed a toolchain that performs a complete interface configuration for services written in C++. We integrated support for flexible interface objects (i.e. objects that can be transferred in the application along with their structural description). Although the protocol relies solely on interfaces and does not take behaviour concerns into account, it is capable of finding discrepancies between input and output interfaces for simple stateful services, which only perform message synchronisation. Two running examples (a three buyers use-case and an image processing application) are used along the way to illustrate our approach. Our results seem to be useful for service providers that run their services in the cloud. The reason is twofold. Firstly, interfaces and the code behind them can be generic as long as they are sufficiently configurable. No communication between service designers is necessary in order to ensure consistency in the design. Instead, the interface correspondence in the application is ensured by the constraint satisfaction algorithm, which we have already designed. Secondly, the configuration and compilation of every service are separated from the rest of the application. This prevents source code leaks in proprietary software which is running in the cloud.

Abstract:
Following the current trends of the Internet traffic growth, the traffic demand is predicted to cross the system capacity in a few years. This poses a number of challenges, one of them being the ability to provide quality-of-service (QoS) to user traffic, as the conventional way of providing QoS by over-provisioning will not be feasible. In this context, the `flow-aware networking' (FAN) approach, proposed as an alternative to the well-known IntServ and DiffServ architectures, employs implicit service differentiation using mechanisms such as admission control, scheduling, routing, etc. , at the level of flows, where a flow is a flight of packets with the same set of identifiers localized in time. As per definition, the flow-aware networking approach is `blocking' in design, with respect to flows. The admission control policy rejects new flows depending on the network conditions. We define `flow-based networking' as a generalized version of the FAN approach, without restricting to any particular QoS-providing mechanism defined there, but more importantly with no blocking of flows. The idea is to have the flexibility in combining different flow-based mechanisms, proposed independently, for scheduling, buffer management, congestion control, routing, accounting, sampling, etc. The performance in such a network can be be based on flow-level metrics. This is in line with the utility of end-users where, say, the delay of small flows, throughput of large flows, instantaneous rate of streaming traffic, etc. , are most often more important than packet-level QoS metrics

Thesis (MTech (Information Technology))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2012.
This research is an attempt to investigate the utilisation of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in Healthcare to support the flow of HIV/AIDS patient’s general information in public and private sector. Furthermore, the research examines the detail flow of database information for healthcare service delivery to patients, in particular HIV/AIDS patients, in Khayelitsha Township. Finally, the research will detail the types of technologies currently being utilised to transfer this information, technology utilised for capturing or data collection profile of the patient. The research study data collecting was done in 2009 in mostly private and public healthcare centre in Khayelitsha township. First, the study will concentrate on general utilisation of ICT in healthcare service delivery and flow of information for public and private sector healthcare centres. Additionally, the research also looks at NGOs such as HIV/AIDS Unit in Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and Treament Action Campaign (TAC) to find out what ICT equipment is being utilised to transfer this information to adult people to inform and make them to be aware of HIV/AIDS and improve healthcare service delivery to patients and particularly to HIV/AIDS patients. Taking NGO’s such as TAC and CPUT HIV/AIDS Unit that are well informed about HIV/AIDS, nationally and internationally will make our research results to be more precise. The research will also look at the utilisation of ICT in flow of information at healthcare centre such as communication between healthcare providers such as receptionist/clerk, nurses, doctors and medical researchers since they are the first people who deal with HIV/AIDS patient cases when they come for healthcare provision.

Abstract:
In this thesis, a new modeling technique is proposed for minimizing regression testing effort in software product lines. The &ldquo
Product Flow Model&rdquo
is used for the common representation of products in application engineering and the &ldquo
Domain Service and Object Model&rdquo
represents the variant based relations between products and core assets. This new approach provides a solution for avoiding unnecessary work load of regression testing using the principles of sub-service decomposition and variant based product/sub-service traceability matrices. The proposed model is adapted to a sample product line targeting the banking domain, called Loyalty and Campaign Management System, where loyalty campaigns for credit cards are the products derived from core assets. Reduced regression test scope after the realization of new requirements is demonstrated through a case study. Finally, efficiency improvement in terms of time and effort in the test process with the adaptation of the proposed model is discussed.

Johnson, Gary Wayne. "Connecting Landscapes to People: Assessing the Distribution of Ecosystem Service Flows Using the SPAN Approach." ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2014. http://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/301.

Full text
Abstract:
The Service Path Attribution Network (SPAN) framework provides a novel, user-centric, connectivity-based approach to ecosystem service assessment and valuation (ESAV). Ecosystem services are delivered to users through the simulated flow of some service medium (i.e., matter, energy, or information) from the ecosystems in which it originates (sources) to the people or assets which it affects (users). Along the way, the service medium may be absorbed by intervening landscape features (sinks) or captured by rival users. Crucially, the service medium is not itself an ecosystem service or benefit but rather an agnostic transport mechanism which establishes connectivity between sources, sinks, rival users, and nonrival users within a delimited study region. Each user then receives benefits or harm from the encountered service medium depending on their specific relationship with it. For example, if surface water is the simulated service medium, it may increase productivity at a hydropower plant but damage farmers in floodplains by drowning their crops. In the SPAN terminology, sources provide provisioning ecosystem services to users with a beneficial relationship with the service medium. Similarly, sinks provide preventive ecosystem services to users with a detrimental relationship with the service medium by reducing the amount flowing to their locations. Notably, within a single SPAN analysis, both sources and sinks may provide ecosystem services given a sufficiently heterogeneous pool of users. The results of a SPAN ESAV analysis are myriad, totalling up to 30 output maps for some services. Taken together, these maps tell the story of which sources provide services to which users, which sinks protect users from harm, which users compete for the same resources (and who wins), and how all of the sources, sinks, rival users, and nonrival users affect one another. Additionally, a SPAN simulation produces maps of the flow paths taken by the service medium from sources to users as well as where and by how much the flow strength is reduced by sinks. Studying these flow paths can help decision makers identify those locations at which management actions would be maximized or minimized depending on their specific development goals. A crowning achievement of this work is that for most ecosystem services the SPAN algorithm's complexity is guaranteed to be linear O(n) in both time and space with respect to the number of discrete locations analyzed. This makes it a viable option for high resolution landscape level ESAV studies using no more than commodity hardware. This dissertation explores the SPAN framework in depth, from its novel conceptual terminology and computational algorithms through to the intended interpretation of its results. In addition to describing the conceptual and mathematical components of this system in detail, this work also provides a complete Literate Program demonstrating the application of the SPAN framework to an assessment of the scenic beauty ecosystem service in Chittenden County, Vermont.

Naidoo, Lynette. "The participatory development communication approach of Thusong service centres in Tshwane / L. Naidoo." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4149.

Full text
Abstract:
Much discourse on the issue of development communication has focused on participation and its role in improving the lives of developing communities. This line of thought emanates from the theories of Paulo Freire and Martin Buber. Freirean dialogue, which emphasises dialogue and conscientisation emanated from Martin Buber's l-Thou and l-lt relationships and are relevant in this study because these concepts are pivotal in the endeavour to develop grassroots communities. For purposes of this study participatory communication is associated with dialogue, self-reliance, empowerment, the communities' socio-cultural context and strategic communication. In an effort to improve service delivery in the public sector, the South African government resolved to provide communities across South Africa with both information and services through the establishment of Thusong Service Centres. The Thusong concept refers to 'a place to get help or assistance' in Sesotho, and has been the focus of government in carrying out its mandate in respect of development communication in South Africa. This study adopted a qualitative research approach to gather data, to determine how the communication of Thusong Service Centres in Tshwane compare with the normative principles of participatory development communication. This study used purposive sampling and focused on the six Thusong Service Centres in Tshwane. The empirical study comprised document analyses of government policies, semi-structured interviews with senior Government Communication and Information Services (GCIS) personnel and personal observations at the six Thusong Service Centres. An analysis of the communication of Thusong Service Centres with Tshwane communities show that there is inadequate alignment with the theoretical underpinnings of participatory development communication. Against the backdrop of Chin Saik Yoon's four ways of observing participation in development projects, namely, participation in implementation, evaluation, benefit and decision-making, the study indicates that Tshwane communities do not partake in participation in evaluation and participation in decision-making. Furthermore, using Freirean dialogue as a benchmark, it was concluded that Thusong Service Centres do not fully meet the required principles of dialogue. Although the abovementioned results indicate that development communication practised by GCIS at Thusong Service Centres is in the main linear in nature, the study makes practical recommendations on how the normative principles of participatory development communication may be implemented at these centres in order to fast track the development process.

Abstract:
The Swedish healthcare system is considered to have good healthcare productivity and efficiency with moderate cost but seems to have some future challenges. Sweden is moving towards the aging population as it requires development in medical care techniques and technologies to provide care to elderly patients. This increases the pressure on the healthcare system. Hence, the number of patients in the hospital increase, as a result, the flow of patients within the wards are increased. Furthermore, the pandemic has increased the number of people admitted to hospitals. As a consequence, even for high-priority cases, the wait times are rising. The Skaraborg Hospital Group, SHG, and other general hospitals, in particular, are focusing on how to handle patient flow at various levels within departments and clinics by improving patient flow quality. Production and capacity preparation (PCP) is a commonly used industry tool for resolving bottlenecks. Hence, this method needs to be adopted within the hospital and by the healthcare sector to a larger extent. Since many patients from different specialty departments use the Radiology department's facilities, it is often a "bottleneck" in inpatient traffic at hospitals. Furthermore, the influx of patients with covid-19 has increased the department's workload. This master's thesis aims to assist the Radiology department in improving their production and capacity planning to increase unit flow performance. The project involves supporting key staff in the department in estimating demand to align different patient movements with equipment and personnel services. Improving radiology department flow efficiency can lead to more even and healthy patient flows around the hospital, reducing "buffers" of patients and longer stays at different specialist clinics.

Abstract:
Within the design of any building, there is a requirement for designers to understand the intended purposes of the building and the elements that influence performance. These elements can be as tangible as providing a lecture hall within a university or relatively intangible such as the environmental temperatures of the rooms. The elements involved are generally recognised within the design industry and a combined force of engineers, architects, and specialist advisors work together to ensure all of the elements are in place for each new design. However, one element affecting performance that has not yet been comprehensively covered (at least for many building types) is that relating to occupant movement and the influence this has on experience and hence performance. For example, the number of times people have to negotiate cross-flow environments in a train station before becoming agitated is unknown. Also, the average distance people will walk through a shopping centre before becoming tired and ending the activity is unknown. Even so, they will both be impacted upon by the design and they will both reflect back on the performance of the design. Before starting this research, it was realised by the research engineer that there was only a limited understanding and application of people flow analyses within industry and, where it existed, it was solely related to transport terminals, pedestrian walkways/crossings, sports stadia arrivals/egress, and evacuation analyses.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the theory of Goffman’s institutions and applies his concept to the UK Branded Restaurant Industry. Restaurants in the UK are a large part of the tourism hospitality industry, representing around 50% of the business activity in these fields, of which we see dominance from a number of branded operators. Goffman’s institutions, flow, commitment, motivation, spirituality, and deviant behaviour are combined to create a theoretical underpinning for an empirical analysis of staff working in the field. The research focuses on the drivers of flow and commitment of staff. The study successfully applies Goffman’s theory of institutions to the UK Branded Restaurant Industry, by finding similarity in the concepts which are central to those of a traditional asylum, as discussed in Goffman’s early works, and contributing additional aspects to his original theories. The study is the first large scale empirical analysis to examine the nature of flow, commitment, motivation, spirituality, and deviant behaviour, in the context of UK Branded Restaurants. Within the study, the findings show that there is gender parity in this section of the tourism and hospitality industry, which deviates from previous literature. It also identifies key groups of employees who demonstrate higher levels of commitment through intrinsic values and belief systems. The findings are particularly important to managers as they point what is important when identifying new staff members.

The way of self-service wedding breaks through the traditional wedding photography mode, leading the emerging self-service wedding photography trend. Based on the diverse ideas of each couple's own wedding photos, self-service wedding photography can meet the personalized and diversified needs of wedding photography for newcomers. "Self-service wedding photography" belongs to the emerging commercial wedding photography mode, and the service design idea is in the initial stage. Therefore, there is very little relevant literature and it has not been discussed in depth. This research is devoted to exploring the service flow of self-service wedding photography. By investigating the current situation of Taiwan's self-service wedding photography industry, we explored the service flow of self-service wedding photography from the perspective of service design and based on service design. This information is consolidated to provide a reference to existing practitioners and entrepreneurial advice and sales strategies. This study has used interviews as the main research method. The author has used convenient sampling to interview photographers engaged in self-service wedding photography. During interview process, the results were analyzed and summarized from the aspects of space, device and person's point of contact and the shortcomings were found, thus optimizing the existing service flow of self-service wedding photography. The analysis and conclusions are as follows: 1.At present, most of the self-service wedding photography studios have slightly different shooting characteristics and price points, but most wedding studios use almost the same service flow. Here, the service provider needs to focus on the service flow. The customer experience needs to be paid attention to in the prepaid deposit, the fixed schedule, the signing session and the finished product delivery. 2.Most newcomers are the first to pay for such services. In the entire service flow and design, the service gap is mainly based on customer expectations and individual needs. 3.The main feature of self-service wedding photography is that it is less restricted by the venue. Therefore, the gap in the space of wedding photography is relatively small. The gap between the studios in terms of photographic equipment and computer hardware is relatively large compared to the service staff.

IP networks are the most popular communications platform all over the world today. To support real-time high-quality video and voice services in private IP networks and the Internet, IETF concludes on Integrated Service standard featuring an end-to-end QoS enabled transportation of datagrams. However, the scalability problem of Integrated Service can hardly meet the scale of Internet these days. We propose in this thesis a selective flow aggregation approach to help reducing the complexity of QoS processing in large backbone routers by aggregating flows with similar or identical characteristics into a single bundled flow, and thus decreasing the number of flows through. Our study starts with the analysis of traffic characteristics of flows in a multi-node service environment, and then we show that the proposed approach is effective in maintaining the QoS and preserving network resources under a widely adopted hierarchical network architecture. In addition, we also present the numerical results to comprehensively illustrate the benefits of our approach.

Because of the cloud computing is growing rapidly, cloud datacenter provides service resource increasing gradually. Therefore, how to place virtual machine (VM) in cloud datacenter effectively with resource constraint, fulfill the user requirements and reduce operating budget are our focus issues. An effective virtual machine placement strategy is a way to reduce cloud datacenter operating budget. Nowadays there many studies have been proposed to improve the virtual machine placement in cloud data center. The resource of cloud data center has limitations, and cloud service resource will be changed depend on the different types of cloud applications. In this thesis, we propose a Service-Oriented VM placement strategy for cloud data center. First, we classify the service types of virtual machines into Web role, Worker role and Storage. Based on this service-oriented approach, we utilize Genetic Algorithm (GA) to solve the optimization problem of VM placement in cloud data center. The experimental results show that the proposed strategy optimizes the virtual machine placement with resource restrictions and minimizes the total communication cost and power consumption for cloud data center.

Physicians are regarded as an essential human capital for hospitals. Hence, physicians and the hospital are closely related. Physicians are the main contributors of hospitals’ income. Hospitals act not only as training facilities for their physicians, but provide a place for physicians to develop social network, social identity, and sources of customers. Workplace may affect physicians’ service volume significantly. So far, there is few quantitative evidence on such impact from a longitudinal point of view. In this study, the sample hospital were closed for renovation on November 1, 1995. to be more competitive. Physicians were relocated to another municipal hospital nearby until the hospital was operative again on November 1, 1996. This offers us an opportunity to studying the factors influencing the flow of outpatient service volume when physicians changing in the places of service. It is the purpose of this study to offer chain-hospital or chain-clinic managers an evaluation of the overall picture when making strategies and decisions regarding physician man power management, and to achieve the ultimate goal of operating with the greatest efficiency and fulfil their mission of serving the public. We observed thirteen physicians in this study, takes the average monthly outpatient service volume of the physicians in the study as the dependent variable, and characteristics of the physicians and characteristics of the hospitals as explanatory variables. This research analyzes thess factors influencing the flow of outpatient service volume when physicians changing their place of service. The major findings of this study are as follows: 1. When physicians changing their place of service, their outpatient service volume are negatively affected. Changing in another hospital shows a stronger effect than absence from the same hospital for a while. 2. Physicians with 10 to 15 years of experience, being a female and being an obstetric are positively associated with their productivity. Especially, show a stronger effect than the others, when they absence from the same hospital for a while. This research affects physician’s outpatient service volume from the hospital management point of view, finding that whey physicians change their place of service, their outpatient service volume are negatively affected. Changing to another hospital shows a stronger effect than absence from the same hospital for one year. Many physicians still cannot return to their original outpatient service volume after one year coming back to the same hospital. This study to offer chain-hospital or chain-clinic managers a worthy lesson when planning the physician’s working place.

As the computer and networking technologies advance at a fast pace in recent years, the demand for multimedia communications has also been growing at a similar pace. However, the increase of multimedia data may build a bottleneck inside the conventional network (e.g., Ethernet), and can’t assure correctly. Since the multimedia communications demand requires higher bandwidth and better Quality of Service (QoS), so we use ATM technology to provide transport service to applications with widely different traffic characteristics. In the premise that doesn’t change the existing network, we try to use ABR service mechanism for Ethernet-ATM internetworking to achieve our requests. Because we won’t Hub buffer queue increase infinite, we propose two kind control methods to avoid buffer overflow. We use two kind Switch mechanisms to proof our methods. We find that, we get the throughput well as wish in this two methods, and can reduce many buffer queue sizes.
