In this study, absorption, fluorescence, synchronous fluorescence, and Raman spectra of nonirradiated and ultraviolet (UV)-irradiated thymine solutions were recorded in order to detect thymine dimer formation. The thymine dimer formation, as a function of irradiation dose, was determined by Raman spectroscopy. In addition, the formation of a mutagenic (6-4) photoproduct was identified by its synchronous fluorescence spectrum. Our spectroscopic data suggest that the rate of conversion of thymine to thymine dimer decreases after 20 min of UV irradiation, owing to the formation of an equilibrium

In this study, a fluorescent film probe with a structure centered on a Schiff base viz. (N1′,N2′)-N1,N2-bis(2-amino-3,5-dibromobenzylidene)-1,2-diamine (DAB) was synthesized. The probe was used as a fluorescence chemosensor for transition metal ion detection in an aqueous medium. Fluorescence was measured through fluorescence spectroscopy, and the emission maximum of the proposed sensor was 552 nm. Furthermore, the proposed film sensor exhibited a high sensitivity and selectivity toward Hg2+ ions. The limit of detection (LOD) of chemosensor, which was calculated using the fluorescence titratio

Phytoplankton are essential to aquatic ecosystems but can cause harmful algal blooms (HABs) that threaten water quality, aquatic life, and human health. Developing new devices based on spectroscopic techniques offers a promising alternative for rapid and accurate monitoring of aquatic environments. However, phytoplankton undergo various physiological changes throughout their life cycle, leading to alterations in their optical properties, such as autofluorescence. In this study, we present a modification of a low-cost photobioreactor designed to implement fluorescence spectroscopy to analyze th

Abstract In the last few years due to the COVID-19 pandemic the pollution with large quantities of medicaments, disinfectants and essential oils raised the importance of their detection in wastewater. The research of new techniques for diagnostics continues. Some promising methods for finding contaminators of different origin are based on the optic and spectral characteristics of the examined water. Those could be used in determining the exact pollutant. The spectroscopic examination could also be conducted real-time under in vivo conditions. In this research, we use fluorescence spectroscopy

Fluorescence spectroscopy is an optical spectroscopic method that has been applied for the assessment of environmental quality extensively during the last 20 years. Most of the earlier works have used conventional light sources in spectrofluorometers to assess quality. Many recent works have used laser sources of light for the same purpose. The improvement of the energy sources and of the higher resolution spectrometers has led to a tremendous increase in applications. The motivation for the present review study is the increasing use of laser sources in environmental applications. The review i

The objective of this study was to evaluate differences between the red onion cultivar and breeding line using models based on selected fluorescence spectroscopic data built using machine-learning algorithms from different groups of Trees, Functions, Bayes, Meta, Rules, and Lazy. The combination of fluorescence spectroscopy and machine learning is an original approach to the non-destructive and objective discrimination of red onion samples. The selected fluorescence spectroscopic data were used to build models using algorithms from the groups of Trees, Functions, Bayes, Meta, Rules, and Lazy.

Previous studies suggest that only some of the tissues encountered during these procedures can be identified by spectroscopic methods, and no previous study has investigated the use of Raman, diffuse reflectance, and fluorescence spectroscopies.
