The first part of this work was to synthesise partially fluorinated reactive compounds and then to study their reactivity towards nucleophiles and electrophiles. These reactive compounds were obtained in a two step process from both cyclopentane and adamantane and in a three step process for cyclopentanol. A new route to a well-defined block copolymer with alternating PEO-solubilising groups and fluorinated distyrylbenzene units was established. The Horner Wittig reaction was used as the polycondensation reaction. The non-fluorinated analogue of this block copolymer was prepared via the Wittig reaction. Luminescence measurements have been applied to three different structures namely, sulphate, fluorides and YAG. In all cases the RE doping suppresses the intrinsic emission and results in intense luminescence characteristic of the RE dopant. Additionally, in double doped samples, or contaminated ones, the TL data show that each dopant defines a glow peak, which is displaced in temperature relative to the others. The design, synthesis and characterization of novel conjugated polymers are described. Using a coupling reaction recently developed within our labs, polymers were constructed through triazene linkages generated by joining N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) with organic azides.
