Abstract:
In Thuringia and Hesse, considerable documentary evidence of the field name Eisfeld can be found. Localities so designated mostly lie close to settlements and bodies of water; they are usually less appropriate for agriculture. Their location and use, as well as phonetic reasons, suggest a compound with OHG âʒ ‘food, cattle feed’. Probably the original appellative noun OHG âʒifeld mostly designated pasture ground in the vicinity of settlements. Because some of these localities lay within settlements as early as in the Middle Ages, names of the Eisfeld type seem to be quite ancient. Documentary evidence from Bavaria, Austria and Switzerland shows that these terms also occur in Upper German, and there are indications of the same in Dutch.

Abstract:
Flurnamen benennen Flächen, die nicht dauerhaft bewohnt, aber häufig durch den Menschen kultiviert und landwirtschaftlich genutzt sind. Die in diesen Namen erschließbaren Namenmotive verweisen unter anderem auf frühere oder aktuelle landschaftliche Beschaffenheiten, Grundstücksbesitzer und -besitzerinnen, landwirtschaftliche Nutz- und Abgabeformen, lokale Ereignisse oder Tier- sowie Pflanzenvorkommen. Jacob Grimm – und in der Folge eine Vielzahl von im Besonderen philologisch orientierten Namenforscher und Namenforscherinnen – hielten Flurnamen und hier vor allem ländliche Flurnamen für einen Forschungsgegenstand, in dem viele «spuren des höchsten alterthums» (Grimm 1840: 136) erschlossen werden könnten und marginalisierten Flurnamen, die im städtischen Kontext vorkommen, wenn sie diesen dieses sprachgeschichtliche Potential nicht gar schlichtweg absprachen.

Abstract:
The article is concerned with the etymologies of northeast Bavarian, i.e. Upper Franconian, settlement names Würgau, Gleußen, Feuln, Marktzeuln and Wirbenz and the microtoponyms Külmnitz, Külmitz and Leubnitz. While tradition had it that the settlement names are of Slavic origin, a PhD thesis published in 2016 claimed them to be of West Germanic origin. In the case of the microtoponyms Külmnitz and Külmitz only a West Germanic etymology had hitherto been presented, while in the case of the microtoponym Leubnitz both a Germanic and a Slavic one had been proposed, with no final conclusion reached. The article compares the Slavic etymologies with the West Germanic ones and reaches the conclusion that neither of the West Germanic etymologies proposed is more convincing than any of the Slavic ones. In the case of the settlement names Feuln and Marktzeuln, however, each proposed etymology is roughly as convincing as the other (though the author ultimately still sides with the Slavic etymologies). In the case of the other names, the Slavic etymologies are (clearly) more convincing than the West Germanic ones.
