In Frequency Division Multiplex (FDM) systems, nonlinearities in the modulation and demodulation processes of the transmission system produce intermodulation (IM) products which are effectively added to the desired modulation. The effect of these added products is the degradation of data accuracy in the form of noise on the subcarrier data. Currently there are no standard test procedures or specifications that permit the prediction of the level of these IM products during system design. The characterization of transmitter modulation linearity by the measurement of IM, or cross-products, produced by simultaneous modulation by two tones, is considered ideal. This is because the test conditions can closely simulate the highest modulation level subcarriers used and the necessary demodulation equipment can he readily calibrated using common frequency modulated sources. The modulation tones used are both in the upper portion of the transmission system’s baseband and at a modulation level near the level of intended use. Measurement of only the difference frequency IM component, (f !f ), is considered 2 1 adequate for the determination of 2nd order nonlinearities. The 3rd order IM components are measured only at (2f !f ) and (2f !f ) and are normally found to be of equal 1 2 2 1 amplitudes with FM transmitters. All higher order products, as well as direct harmonics, are ignored. From the three IM level measurements, and the two desired tones, the 2nd and 3rd order modulation intercept points (IP and IP ) are determined in essentially the 2 3 same manner as the intercept point, or IP, that is common in specifying the linearity of broadband RF amplifiers. When the amplitude of the various signal and IM components are plotted on log-log scales, the desired signals have a slope of one while the 2nd and 3rd order products have slopes of two and three respectively. On log-log plots the intercept point is the modulation level at which extensions of the low level values of the IM components meet the extension of the desired modulation level. Once the IP values are determined, they may be readily used for system IM calculations. Measured IM levels in a sixteen channel FDM system compared very favorably with predicted levels using the IP values obtained from two-tone tests. The nonlinearities of the demodulator employed in the test system may be evaluated by the use of the “beat” frequency of two independently modulated FM signal sources as the required input to the demodulator. The IM products in the demodulator output in this case are due only to the demodulator’s transfer characteristics. IM product levels of the test system greater than 60 dB below the simultaneous modulation level of ±300 kHz each by 400 and 450 kHz tones are obtained at Sandia Laboratories. The use of two-tone IM tests for the evaluation and specification of FM transmitter modulation linearity is strongly recommended.

This paper describes the design, test and the analysis of the test results of a new type S-band FM telemetry transmitter. Compared with the modulator adopting conventional fundamental crystal direct modulation, the transmitter which adopts UHF fundamental crystal direct modulation has a comparatively better modulation characteristics and a higher center frequency stability. The test results show that the deviation sensitivity of the transmitter is up to 400KHz/Vrms, frequency response is DC~200 KHz, total harmonic distortion is 3% and the center frequency stability is ten to the minus fifth power within the range of - 30~+70°c. Because of the high operating frequency of the modulator, the complicacy of the frequency multiplier has been requced, design of circuitry simplified and harmonic and spurious outputs has been improved to a great extent.

Mobile Phone, without this we can’t think to pass a day in presence. We have found a rapid increase of mobile phone users from a few years ago till now. Day by day the modern technologies allow the mobile phone to become smaller, cheaper, and more reliable. This also creates new possibilities for applications and integrations of the classical broadcast systems and modern mobile phone technologies. One example is the FM transmitter in mobile phone. The FM transmitter in a mobile phone is a “cool” feature which allows listening to the music content in phone on a car or home radio.

 

This thesis work deals with the near field characterization of FM transmitters in mobile phone applications. The RF scientists and engineers neglect the near field zone because typical RF links operate at distances of many wavelengths away where near field effects are totally insignificant. But in this work we are interested in the near field properties of the FM transmitter. We measured the field intensity at near field and estimated the field strength at the far field region at 3 meters. To measure the field intensity and the effective radiated power we used HR1 near field scanner. As this is a new measurement approach, we made the validation of this system by measuring a reference dipole antenna at 880MHz and then compare the measured results to the CST simulation results. A basic phone model of FM transmitter has been created by CST simulation and a prototype has been made which was also used as our DUT. After validation of the near field measurement system we measured our DUTs (3 models-one cable fed prototype and two active devices) with the near field system and estimate the effective radiated power and field intensity at 3 meter. Furthermore, we measured our DUTs at 3 meter with a far field measurement system with optical fiber connection. A feasible relation between field strength and measured power was defined in order to correlate the near field scanner results with the far field measurement system.

 

This paper also provides a short design guide line for built in FM antennas by relating the antenna size and placement to input power and the field strength in mobile phone FM transmitter application

Research results show that the two-point injection microwave FM locked in phase is suitable for the telemetry system, which code rate is higher, band of wide, and modulation response very well.

This master thesis is focused on the theoretical description and practical implementation of software defined transmitter. The main aim of this thesis was made the prototype of software defined transmitter in FM band. Theoretical part is determined to description of basic parts of equipment and working principles to understand the basic principle of digital transmitters and define the appropriate component base for construction. Discussed are used types of A/D and D/A converters, blocks of digital signal processing and the roles, which these components performs. The second part is focused practical. Specified are suitable types of components and block diagram is proposed for following electrical connection and printed circuit board in Eagle program as a plug-in modul for developmental platform Arduino. The main point is program, which sets and controls the transmitter. Next important part is impedance match and antenna tuning, which is explain in practical part of thesis. The result is prototype of software defined transmitter compatible with Arduino Uno platform.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A well-known problem with FM-CW radar systems is the leakage of transmitter power into the receiver which leads to the making of close-in targets, and can severely limit the system dynamic range performance. This thesis considers two solutions to this radar system problem for a low frequency radar operating in the VHF band. The first method to suppress coupling is using separate transmit and receive antennas designed in such a way as to reduce coupling between them. The second is to design a negative feedback loop as part of the radar receiver where the feedback loop adaptively reduces the amount of transmitter leakage through to the receiver. This project details the realisation of these two solutions. A number of antenna designs are modelled in software and simulated to determine their characteristics of which the transmit-to-receive coupling is the key parameter. As no low coupling configuration could be found a simple configuration is chosen and practical measurements are taken. These antennas are then used in the radar system that is to be built. An FM-CW radar system is designed and simulated using software with a negative feedback loop being designed and implemented into the radar simulation. A practical radar system is then made inclusive of the feedback loop. Measurements are then taken to determine the efficacy of the feedback loop.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: ʼn Bekende probleem met FM-CW radar stelsels is die lekkasie van versender krag tot in die ontvanger wat lei tot die maak van nabye teikens en kan die stelsel se dinamiese sendbereik steng beperk. Hierdie tesis oorweeg twee oplossings tot hierdie probleem vir ʼn lae frekwensie radar wat in die VHF band werk. Die eerste metode wat na gekyk word om die koppeling te onderdruk is om die twee antennas van die radar stelsel so te ontwerp sodat die hoeveelheid koppeling tussen hulle verminder is. Die tweede is om ʼn negatiewe terugvoerlus as deel van die ontvanger te ontwerp. Hierdie terugvoerlus sal die versender lekkasie sein aanpassend in die ontvanger verminder. In hierdie projek word die realisering van bogenoemde oplossings uiteengeset. ʼn Paar verskillende antenna ontwerpe word gemodelleer in sagteware en word gesimuleer om hul karakteristieke te bepaal. Die belangrikste van hierdie faktore is die versender na ontvanger koppeling. Sienend dat geen ontwerp met ʼn lae genoeg koppeling gevind kon word nie, is ʼn eenvoudige ontwerp gekies en praktiese metings daarvan geneem. Hierdie antennas word dan gebruik in die radar stelsel wat gebou sal word. ʼn FM-CW radar stelsel word ontwerp en gesimuleer in sagteware. Die negatiewe terugvoerlus word ook ontwerp en geïmplementeer in die radar simulasie. ʼn Praktiese radar stelsel word dan gemaak insluitend die terugvoerlus. Metings word dan geneem om die effektiwiteit daarvan te bepaal.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The high performance of present digital phase-locked loops makes it the preferred choice for the generation of stable, low noise, tunable local oscillators in wireless communications applications. Most transmitters use superheterodyn techniques for up-conversion of the modulated signal to the required transmission frequency. Another technique is to inject the modulation signal into a phase-locked loop and consequently generate a frequency modulated signal directly at the transmission frequency. The aim of this study is to obtain a synthesizer configuration for the effective generation of wideband FM, considering both passive and active loop filters. The selection is based on synthesizer output signal quality, settling time and loop response to the modulation signal.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die hoe werksverrigting van fase-sluit lusse maak dit die verkiesde keuse vir die generasie van stabiele, lae ruis, verstelbare ossillators vir draadlose kommunikasie toepassings. Meeste senders gebruik "superheterodyn" tegnieke vir die op-menging van die gemoduleerde sein na die verlangde uitsaai frekwensie. 'n Ander tegniek is om die modulasie sein in 'n fase-sluit Ius te voer en so doende 'n gemoduleerde sein direk by die transmissie frekwensie te genereer. Die doel van hierdie studie is om 'n sintetiseerder konfigurasie te verkry vir die effektiewe opwekking van 'n wyeband FM sein, deur beide passiewe en aktiewe Ius filters in konsiderasie te neem. Abstract:
An FM transmitter becomes the new feature in recent portable electronic development. A low power, integrable FM transmitter filter IC is required to meet the demand of FM transmitting feature. A low pass filter using harmonic rejection technique along with a low power class-AB output buffer is designed to meet the current market requirements on the FM transmitter chip. A harmonic rejection filter is designed to filter FM square wave signal from 70MHz to 110MHz into FM sine wave signal. Based on Fourier series, the harmonic rejection technique adds the phase shifted square waves to achieve better THD and less high frequency harmonics. The phase shifting is realized through a frequency divider, and the summation is implemented through a current summation circuit. A RC low pass filter with automatic tuning is designed to further attenuate unwanted harmonics. In this work, the filter's post layout simulation shows -53dB THD and harmonics above 800MHz attenuation of -99dB. The power consumption of the filter is less than 0.7mW. Output buffer stage is implemented through a resistor degenerated transconductor and a class-AB amplifier. Feedforward frequency compensation is applied to compensate the output class-AB stage, which extends the amplifier's operating bandwidth. A fully balanced class-AB driver is proposed to unleash the driving capability of common source output transistors. The output buffer reaches -43dB THD at 110MHz with 0.63Vpp output swing and drives 1mW into 50 load. The power consumption of the output buffer is 7.25mW. By using harmonic rejection technique, this work realizes the 70MHz-110MHz FM carrier filtering using TSMC 0.18um nominal process. Above 800MHz harmonics are attenuated to below -95dB. With 1.2V supply, the total power consumption including output buffer is 7.95mW. The total die area is 0.946mm2.

The aim of this paper is to study the different parts of a wireless system in order to better understand the signal properties and what key factors changes the signal during its transmission. Two transmitters were created, an FM transmitter that transmits analog data and an Arudino board programed to convert data to bits before its transmission. The acquired signals were then compared to the original signal noting how differently the data had changed. To understand the antennas contribution to the system a simulation was done using High Frequency Structural Simulator. A description of the analysis on the different acquired signals was done to determine the best applications they might have.

Radar signal and speech recognition, the technology is quite mature, and the demand for more and more important. The principal purpose of this study was to use the linear predictive cepstral feature parameters which used in speech recognition and speaker identification, and use the Gaussian mixture model to FM transmitter signal recognition which model originally used in speaker recognition, face detection, and radar signal recognition. Using the received the FM transmitter signal, the parameters of the energy weighted center frequency, the characteristics obtained from the moments of power spectrum of the received signal, the moments of the received time domain signal, the linear prediction coefficients(LPC), and the linear prediction cepstrum coefficients(LPCC) were calculated, and then, the different combination sets of the calculated parameters were used to create different Gaussian mixture models(GMM) for the proposed FM transmitter signal recognition algorithms. The different carrier frequencies, different modulation indexes and different SNR of FM transmitter signal were generated to be identified. The simulation results show that using the combination of the energy weighted center frequency, the characteristics obtained from the moments of power spectrum related characteristics and the linear predictive cepstral coefficients is better, and the recognition results show that the proposed method in this thesis works well.
