Valley, Pouria. "FLAT LIQUID CRYSTAL DIFFRACTIVE LENSES WITH VARIABLE FOCUS AND MAGNIFICATION." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/145737.

Full text
Abstract:
Non-mechanical variable lenses are important for creating compact imaging devices. Various methods employing dielectrically actuated lenses, membrane lenses, and liquid crystal lenses were previously proposed [1-4]. In This dissertation the design, fabrication, and characterization of innovative flat tunable-focus liquid crystal diffractive lenses (LCDL) are presented. LCDL employ binary Fresnel zone electrodes fabricated on Indium-Tin-Oxide using conventional micro-photolithography. The light phase can be adjusted by varying the effective refractive index of a nematic liquid crystal sandwiched between the electrodes and a reference substrate. Using a proper voltage distribution across various electrodes the focal length can be changed between several discrete values. Electrodes are shunted such that the correct phase retardation step sequence is achieved. If the number of 2πzone boundaries is increased by a factor of m the focal length is changed from f to f/m based on the digitized Fresnel zone equation: f = rm²/2mλ, where r(m) is mth zone radius, and λ is the wavelength. The chromatic aberration of the diffractive lens is addressed and corrected by adding a variable fluidic lens. These LCDL operate at very low voltage levels (±2.5V ac input), exhibit fast switching times (20-150 ms), can have large apertures (>10 mm), and small form factor, and are robust and insensitive to vibrations, gravity, and capillary effects that limit membrane and dielectrically actuated lenses. Several tests were performed on the LCDL including diffraction efficiency measurement, switching dynamics, and hybrid imaging with a refractive lens. Negative focal lengths are achieved by adjusting the voltages across electrodes. Using these lenses in combination, magnification can be changed and zoom lenses can be formed. These characteristics make LCDL a good candidate for a variety of applications including auto-focus and zoom lenses in compact imaging devices such as camera phones. A business plan centered on this technology was developed as part of the requirements for the minor in entrepreneurship from the Eller College of Management. An industrial analysis is presented in this study that involves product development, marketing, and financial analyses (Appendix I).

Young, William Russell. "The soft-focus lens and Anglo-American pictorialism." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/505.

Full text
Abstract:
The history, practice and aesthetic of the soft focus lens in photography is elucidated and developed from its earliest statements of need to the current time with a particular emphasis on its role in the development of the Pictorialist movement. Using William Crawford's concept of photographic 'syntax', the use of the soft focus lens is explored as an example of how technology shapes style. A detailed study of the soft focus lenses from the earliest forms to the present is presented, enumerating the core properties of pinhole, early experimental and commercial soft focus lenses. This was researched via published texts in period journals, advertising, private correspondence, interviews, and the lenses themselves. The author conducted a wide range of in-studio experiments with both period and contemporary soft focus lenses to evaluate their character and distinct features, as well as to validate source material. Nodal points of this history and development are explored in the critical debate between the diffuse and sharp photographic image, beginning with the competition between the calotype and daguerreotype. The role of George Davison's The Old Farmstead is presented as well as the invention of the first modern soft focus lens, the Dallmeyer-Bergheim, and its function in the development of the popular Pictorialist lens, the Pinkham & Smith Semi-Achromatic. The trajectory of the soft focus lens is plotted against the Pictorialist movement, noting the correlation betwixt them, and the modern renaissance of soft focus lenses and the diffuse aesthetic. This thesis presents a unique history of photography modeled around the determining character of technology and the interdependency of syntax, style and art.

Abstract:
The thesis has the objective of developing a study concerning trauma and its effects under a dynamic perspective and not merely economical, as it has been the case of many studies in the field of the psychoanalysis since now, taking as reference the clinical observation in psychoanalytic services rendered to the Military Policemen in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Besides the notions of Schreck (fright) and of an excess of energy invasion presented by Freud in 1920 to explain the trauma, we will include in this research the role of the superego, whose imposition of a masochist enjoyment at the service of the death drive can lead to the compulsion to repetition of the trauma. If we understand trauma as the shattering of the sexual fantasies, it causes the subjective references to dismount, a process that leads to the sensation of psychic annihilation. That is the reason of the idea that a strange body remains in the psyche. Identified with the dead, a position that generates a depressive state that endangers the subject s survival, he can fall in a melancholic state or even in a paranoid state, without being a psychotic; because the action of the superego of punishing and trampling on the ego, taking him to complete the inconcluded action (death), can be attributed to a pursuing Other, when, in reality, this threat is internal, as it will be shown in some clinical cases.

Abstract:
Modern vehicles are very dependent on sensors and especially cameras to analyze different objects and conditions. Single camera systems are frequently used for lane detection and identifying objects in the distance. These systems depend on good conditions to work properly and are easily disrupted by environmental interferences. This project is targeted in developing an image processing algorithm that can detect disturbances applied upon the camera lens. Several focus measure operators are evaluated and compared by expected outcome while still maintaining a satisfying computational time, low resource usage and accuracy with an ERR between 0% - 1%.

Abstract:
Orthodox optical devices, such as lenses, mirrors, and prisms, are composed of solid-state materials, which although well studied and implemented ubiquitously are severely limited in their adaptable properties. An arguably new field of adaptive optics has emerged to further expand photonic manipulation competences of optical components. Fluid-based adaptive optical components were introduced as early as 1968; such components have the ability to change the shape of their interface surface, thus allowing for a variable curvature profile. The method of manipulation varies greatly, as does the range of surface deformations. A solid-state optical component is affected by system vibration variation only (difference in vibration from one component to the other due to damping effect). By comparison, two large limiting factors of a fluid-based adaptive optical component are the effect of local vibrations on the surface of the device and gravitational effect (when the optical axis of a lens is positioned parallel to gravitational pull). Such a gravitational effect has been mitigated by the invention of the mechanical electrowetting lens, which uses density matching of two liquids that make up an adaptive lens. However, this configuration creates an extra limiting factor of density matching two optically clear fluids with a desirable transmission spectrum. This method can also become bulky when a large aperture is needed. In this thesis, two adaptive lens systems are explored. Principles of operation, performance, limitations, as well as future improvements are studied and theorized. The first lens uses an optically clear elastomer as the substrate of an adaptive lens and a primitive mechanical manipulation to turn a plano–plano lens into a plano–convex lens. The second lens is composed of an optically clear gel rather than a fluid. Both methods exhibit excellent optical properties regardless of the orientation about the gravitational pull and significantly limit local vibration affects simply by the physical nature of the chosen materials.
