Abstract:
Purpose The gap between management theory and practice has been much criticized. To help bridge the divide, a synthesis of empirical, theoretical and practice literature is offered, along with an application of the widely used VRIO framework, to contend that developing a focused corporate parenting approach as a core competence serves as a source of competitive advantage for diversified companies. Design/methodology/approach A synthesis of empirical, theoretical and practice literature is presented, beginning with a discussion of why and how firms diversify; the relative performance of firms that pursue related and unrelated diversification; an application of the resource-based view, core competencies and the VRIO framework; a description of focused corporate parenting as a core competency; a prescription for how diversified firms can implement a focused corporate parenting approach; and implications for research. Findings Developing a focused corporate parenting approach as a core competence serves as a source of competitive advantage for diversified companies. Research limitations/implications The synthesis of empirical, theoretical and practice literature presented provides a foundation for future research into the impact of focused corporate parenting on diversified firm performance. Practical implications The paper includes a prescription for how diversified firms can implement a focused corporate parenting approach. Originality/value The application of the resource-based view and core competency theories to corporate parenting provides managers with the rationale for and methodology to focus their corporate parenting activities.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to compare and contrast the two approaches of total quality management (TQM) and business process reengineering (BPR). This exploratory study focuses on the core areas, assumptions and scope pertinent to both TQM and BPR. Even though the two approaches focus on performance, organizational effectiveness and efficiency, the practical usage and approaches differ. The key drivers of the two dimensions provide futurists with a guide not to obliterate its salience in today’s competitive business organizations. The article examines each approach and acknowledges the potential benefits in situation-specific circumstances and encounters. Certainly, the practices differ, and with a contingency focus, the study probes into salient features of TQM and BPR, hence enriching the study to speculate about the future in order to create an efficacious effect. Lastly, the study attempts to determine whether one approach has the potential to outshadow the other.

Abstract:
A white paper written on building market-focused businesses reported that organizations which are market-focused primarily set their competitive advantage by delivering superior value beneficially to their target customers alongside thriving in their financial performance. However, this conclusion was made only for market-focused businesses, but we believe that the same applies to product-focused businesses in light of the research which can be related to such a strategic approach. In this review, we discuss the two forms of business philosophies; the first is market-focused business philosophy which is primarily concerned with satisfying customers and market needs, and the second, a product-focused business philosophy is concerned with leading through the innovation of the core offerings of an organization. Surprisingly, both these strategic options have so far not been widely explored comparatively in the available literature. Regardless, we propose that both have a relationship with a certain degree of market orientation that can help to solve the mystery regarding which strategic option is superior over another. This relationship further needs to be tested with empirical evidence to help the managers so they can guide the right strategic direction of the company. Furthermore, it is suggested that strategic focus in crisis situations also need to be further analyzed with regard to product-focused and market-focused businesses.

While members of the business faculty community have been advocating active learning in the classroom, it appears that textbooks encourage learning from a passive perspective. A review of learning objectives from 16 textbooks used in Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Finance, and Marketing demonstrates a focus on basically the same set of primary verbs at a low cognitive level. These low cognitive level verbs differ in substance from the expectations contained in the end-of-the-chapter materials. In a world of assessment, the authors are concerned that the textbook learning objectives seem to focus on the form of technical content and not the substance of student learning.

Abstract The financial services industry, and in particular the trust business industry, has been severely affected by regulations in recent years. The worrying thing about it is that the industry’s focus is being shifted away from the clients and their needs. This article aims at bringing back into focus what the trust business is all about and what the core competencies of trustees are.

Full text
Abstract:
This article explores the informal seed business, focusing on the yellow bean in Tanzania. The yellow bean is a major bean type traded, yet little is known about the seed supply that fuels it. The survey research in 2019 encompassed larger grain traders, informal seed traders, and retailers, covered major production, distribution and sale hubs, and was complemented by GIS mapping of seed and grain flows and DNA fingerprinting of yellow bean samples. Results showed that traders buy and sell grain and informal seed: it is not one business or the other, but both. Informal seed is an important moneymaker, representing between 15 and 40% of trader business in non-sowing and sowing periods, respectively. In the year monitored, 100% of the yellow bean seed was drawn from the informal sector, amounting to $US 4.35 million just among those sampled. Nevertheless, the informal and formal sectors are clearly linked, as over 60% of the beans sampled derived from modern varieties. Informal traders prove key for: sustaining the grain business, serving the core of the seed business, and moving varieties at scale. More explicit efforts are needed to link the informal sector to formal research and development partners in order to achieve even broader impacts.

Abstract:
This study profiles, through a case study of an undergraduate business programme, how a business school has embedded the theme of enterprise in its core undergraduate programme. Key participants in the development of the strategy and programme tutors and students were interviewed, to provide information for an analysis of the principle objectives and the impact of the course. The findings confirm the need to adopt a top-down strategy to identify underpinning themes that support all programme activities: the programme curriculum should focus on key themes and use innovative assessment and teaching and learning strategies, as well as added-value activities that enhance its effectiveness. The authors offer recommendations for best practice, including specific modules of study, use of guest speakers, added-value activities for developing student skills and innovative assessment strategies. It is argued that the paper will help university policy makers to construct valid programmes in which themes of enterprise and self-employment are integrated in order to enhance experiential and added-value activities.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to highlight dysfunctional multi-stakeholder relations and negative business outcomes, evidenced in lose/lose results, exacerbated by failure to acknowledge strategic business focus as a means to redress problematic business thinking and practice amongst key leadership teams associated with achieving balance between competitive advantage and corporate social responsibility. Design/methodology/approach The reframed strategic business focus has been developed using Eastern philosophy and Western organization theory and refers to four case examples of dysfunctional business thinking and practice. Findings Strategic business focus results from an interdependent and complementary positive mediating relationship between competitive advantage and corporate social responsibility, which is moderated by organization culture (organization core values, including shared value) and strategic human resource management (talent and mindset). Research limitations/implications Strategic business focus as proposed has not been empirically tested but seeks to address a conceptualization that competing business and stakeholder agendas are interdependent and complementary. Practical implications Strategic business focus seeks to redress traditional win/lose and lose/lose business outcomes, by supporting win/win results, represented by shared value amongst multi-stakeholders. Social implications Strategic business focus seeks to provide a means whereby corporate social responsibility, particularly the social contract, plays a key role in the decisions and practices of key leadership teams and the behaviour of corporate staff in host environments when seeking competitive advantage. Originality/value Eastern thinking and behaviour are usually undervalued in the western business literature, particularly in western business practice. Joint attention, however, may improve competitive advantage and corporate social responsibility agendas in support of diverse management practices, including shared value.

Abstract:
Brand management is a relatively new topic in marketing literature and it is considered by several researchers, academics and professionals, as one of the most important business strategies that allow not only a significant growth of the business performance of small enterprises, but also their continuity in the market where they participate. Similarly, brand management has also been analyzed and discussed at the core of enterprises and there are relatively few investigations that focus on small enterprises, and there are even less researches carried out in developing countries. For these reasons, the main goal of this empirical research is the analysis and discussion of the effects of brand management on the level of business performance in small enterprises, by using a sample of 300 small firms and by implementing a model of structural equations of second order, that can provide a deeper understanding of the current relation between brand management and business performance. The results obtained show that brand management has a positive and significant in the level of business performance in small enterprises.

The purpose of this study is to contribute to a better understanding of how visions could be applied in subsidiaries and similar sub organisations of global enterprises. With increasing globalisation it becomes more difficult to work in accordance to same standards and towards a common and unifying interest. The study has a qualitative and deductive approach and is based on interviews with three global subsidiaries with some hundred people employed each.

Conclusions are that the subsidiaries visions have to be based on a guiding philosophy issued by their mother entities and it is the responsibility of the sub organisation to develop a tangible image with a local vision, mission and strategy with targets requiring feedback. Sustainable strategies cannot be issued without a vision describing where the organisation want be in the future. Otherwise they will not come very far until they have to make a restart with a new strategy and they will never be a market leader.

Abstract:
Throughout history, large companies have been adapting to the new times. For this, they have had to be able to evolve and change the direction of their offer. In most cases, the offer they have now has nothing to do with what they offered. In other terms, they had to expand their core business. That means changing the main source of incomes. This can be done by moving to another market, creating new products, changing from a product to a service company etc. On the contrary, many companies that led the market have disappeared due to their lack of future vision. After using all its resources in their current core product, they forgot to invest in the future. Once that product became obsolete, the company failed. Looking to the future and deciding which direction to take is not easy. There is no standard successful formula for knowing which direction to take, but there are some common factors that can help reduce the risk. The results from the study show lack of focus and strategy as the main challenges for companies to expand the core. The conclusion is that there is not only one way to expand the core, and each company should adapt their strategies according to the status of the company. In the case of the case company, the strategy is aligned with their status, but the way it is applied should be improved to increase the speed and success rate. Three main recommendations are given to improve the actual expanding-the-core process: Isolate the non-core to increase the focus, better use of their brand position and the competitive advantages it can bring, and to improve the overall knowledge of the company in the non-core products.

Today we are in an age of Information. The systems that effectively use the vast amount of data available all over the world and provide meaningful insight (i.e. BI systems) for the people who need it are of critical importance. The development of such systems has always been a challenge as the development is outweighed by change. The methodologies that are devised for coping with the constant change during the system development are agile methodologies. So practitioners and researchers are showing keen interest to use agile strategies for the BI projects development. The research aims to find out how well the agile strategies suit for the development of BI projects. The research considers a case study in a very big organization as BI is organization centric. There by assessing the empirical results that are collected from interviews the author is trying to generalize the results. The results for the research will give an insight of the best practices that can be considered while considering agile strategies and also the practical problems that we may encounter on the journey. The findings have implications for both business and technical managers who want to consider agile strategies for the BI/DW development projects.
Program: Masterutbildning i Informatik

Abstract:

Background: During the last decades there has been an increased focus on companies shouldering a greater social responsibility. This is due to globalisation, increased concern for environmental issues and consumer activism. These issues in combination with high-profile corporate scandals have highlighted the concept of CSR, which implies a greater social, ethical and environmental responsibility for companies.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to, through a theoretical exposition, investigate and analyse the concept of CSR, with a main focus on CSR from an employee perspective and its relation to employee wellbeing. This focus will also be illuminated with empirical data.

Conduction of thesis: This thesis has been carried out through a theoretical exposition and by conducting eight interviews at a publishing company.

Results: Regarding CSR from an employee perspective, we categorised different factors into four groups; physical working environment, formal contracts and agreements, organisational power structure and ethical aspects. The empirical findings showed that all the factors were perceived as important for employee wellbeing but it also pointed to some factors being taken for granted.

Abstract:

Abstract

Background:

Goals and goal-setting are two aspects that occur everyday in business life however little is known about the effect of strategic goal-setting. To a cer-tain extent, this affects all of us either directly or indirectly, everyday through strategic decisions that are made by business managers all around the world. A company’s performance of a company can be measured in many ways. A firm’s performance can be financially successful if the com-pany’s strategy is well planned. Strategic planning consists of developing goal-strategies, which aim at contributing to the firm’s performance.

Problem:

A small business manager’s view on the goals-setting strategies is important since the manager in a small company can influence the business more than compared to a manager in a larger firm. As the personality differs among managers, the level of planning and proactiveness would differ as well. Sev-eral studies have focused on the relationship between goal-setting and per-formance but the level of proactiveness has not been has not been consid-ered to a larger extent.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate managers’ goal-setting strategies, focusing on goal-specificy, planning, proactiveness, and financial perform-ance in small businesses in the Jönköping region, Sweden.

Method:

To fulfill the purpose of this thesis both qualitative and quantitative re-search approaches have been used. As 173 interviews were already carried out in an earlier study, we created a strategy on how to use the collected in-terview data. Theories from different research areas were combined with hypotheses to create a framework for this paper. The theories and the hy-potheses were analyzed in light of the empirical evidence, the interview and we used the SPSS to test our hypotheses.

Result:

The results from the first three hypotheses were not found to be too unex-pected as we assumed that planning, the level of goal-specificy and proac-tiveness to a large extent, depend on a managers’ strategies and ambitions. The final two hypotheses have helped us discover new patterns and add to previous theories. We have made two main contributions by conducting this master thesis. The first one is that a high degree of planning does not imply a higher level of financial performance. The second one is that family businesses do not show a lesser degree of planning compared to non-family businesses.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering; and, (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 1999.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 87).
Today, many manufacturing companies are facing numerous challenges that had not been present in the past. The paradigm of how companies must perform has dramatically changed over the years. Back in the 1980's customer service was used as a tool to gain competitive advantage. Now, good customer service is expected from the vendor and few companies survive if they don't embrace best of breed practices such as this one. In addition, quality, cost and delivery time have become intrinsic values for the consumer. Not only does the product need to be at a lower cost but they also need to be of higher quality and be delivered promptly. Instron Corporation is one of the companies that is searching for ways to remain as the industry leader given the fierce competition they face. This company sells electromechanical testing machines and has a large after market for accessories for these machines. While the company has placed a lot of effort into certain areas, others have been completely neglected. This project will focus on the accessory business of the electromechanical systems. The intent has been to identify the major problems that the accessory business faces and provide the company with a set of tools and guidelines that will help the company perform more effectively. Due to time constraints, the research was done on one segment of the accessory business, the grips. Therefore, this thesis should be used as a template for the rest of the accessory business. Topics included are; product rationalization, redesign with product platforms, and an inventory model to reduce existing inventory investments and increase inventory turns.
by María José Alvarez.
S.M.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter will highlight the fact that “Focus” is not just “Focus” by identifying five different types of focus choices. Older companies began in a given industry sector and remained loyal to that sector, adopting an industry focus. Past experience in a given sector can lead to business focus. For many firms, core competence served as the basis for building an entire company. Some companies define their focus strategy around a given technology. Focusing on a single market provides, and necessitates, in-depth knowledge of the operating conditions of a company’s customers.

Abstract:
AbstractCitizen science has manifold relationships to policy, which is understood as sets of ideas or plans for action followed by a government, business, political party, or group of people. In this chapter, we focus on the relationship between citizen science, government policies, and the related notions of politics and polity. We discuss two core areas of interaction between citizen science and policy. Firstly, government policies can support citizen science to flourish, for example, through legitimisation or funding. Secondly, citizen science can contribute to policymaking at various stages of the policy cycle, including policy preparation, formulation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. Since both of these perspectives are intertwined, the policy landscape related to citizen science is complex, and it is continuously evolving. This chapter disentangles some of the complexities, with a particular focus on the European landscape, its geographic diversity, and key players (stakeholders and beneficiaries). It presents a brief history and the current context and also includes recommendations for the future with respect to governance, policy impact, sustainability of citizen science initiatives, and the role of digital transformations. We showcase the pathways of leading examples but also highlight currently unanswered questions.

Vlasov, Mikhail. "Core Competencies Identification and Development: Evidence from Oil and Gas Exploration Company." In SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition. SPE, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.2118/206111-ms.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Background Key trends say that to stay as a primary energy source for the upcoming years Oil & Gas companies shall concentrate their efforts on efficiency and technologies, including digital. The situation in the Exploration sector is challenging, as there are almost no "easy" resources left to explore. One of the ways to build a further development strategy for the Oil & Gas Exploration Companies is to define and build development plans for their core internal capabilities. To boost their efficiency, companies shall concentrate their attention and efforts around their core competencies. Purpose The principal aim of this paper is to suggest the method of identifying the internal sources of competitive advantage (the core competencies of an organization) and building the plans of their development on the example of the selected Oil & Gas Exploration Company. Methodology A case study was carried out utilizing the methods synthesized by the author basing on the critical analysis of the previous conceptual and research studies, including strategic architecture, value chain analysis, POCCI model and both quantitative and qualitative methods. The identification of core competencies was based on a discussion nature of focus group activities organized in the form of strategic sessions among the top management level of the selected Company. Findings Five core competencies were identified for any Oil & Gas Exploration Company: managing personnel motivation and development, managing uncertainties, regional / basin analysis, building an integrated business-case, and geological modelling. These results were validated and proved by a crosscheck analysis, final discussions with the focus group and a round table discussion among industry experts, consultants and top managers of major oil companies. Discussions and recommendations for further development The validity of methods suggested by the author is proved, however, some points of further methodology were identified during the research. The clear understanding of internal capabilities, the core competencies development level and what is the company is capable of today and tends to be capable of in the future will become one of the most valuable parts in every strategic decision-support package. The clear picture of identified and estimated competences together with an on-going benchmarking becomes a valuable guide in systematization and managing the company's development.

Abstract:
The conditions of globalization require companies to transform from the traditional industrial enterprises into the modern post-industrial ones, which are becoming open, flexible and innovative. The focus on knowledge has lead to increase attention towards information technology (IT) as one of the main source of competitive advantages. Organizational starting points for their functioning lead to a specific organizational structure, e.g. virtual organization. Virtual organizations enable organizational and/or individual core competencies to be brought together when needed, and disbanded when no longer required on one hand. On the other hand, competitive pressure over the modern conditions of business requires a high quality of business functioning. Business functioning of virtual organizations car be significantly improved mainly in the field of its management, which is its least developed and investigated area. An important viewpoint of management presents a holistic information support to management, which, to a great extent, determines the quality of the entire management and has also a major impact on the results of business operation.

Abstract:
PODS the Pipeline Open Data Standard (ISAT 2.0) is a new data model that has been developed by a group of application developers, with the support of GTI (formerly Gas Research Institute). The presentation will consist of two parts. The first will present the business case for PODS and the PODS Association. The second part will describe technical aspects of the data model. The purpose of PODS is to promote a database standard in the pipeline industry so companies can avoid custom data designs and applications, costly data migration, and reduce development risk. Vendors benefit by developing applications and processes that can be shared by different customers. This paper will give an overview of the business case for industry and vendor participants to use PODS. To manage the PODS data model, a new PODS Association has been formed which will oversee the continued development of the model and extensions through focused working groups comprised of industry and vendor members. This presentation will describe the purpose and operation of the PODS Association. Finally, this presentation will focus on the PODS data model itself and the important concepts. The focus will be on some of the core data model tables, how ESRI users can easily use the model, and future directions.

Abstract:
The article covers the controversial issue on embracing the client-focused approach with regards to implementing optimisation procedures. The stages highlighted by business consultants are demonstrated and attention is drawn to the lack of a stage for identifying client attitudes towards optimisation measures. The opinion of business consultants is presented: upon the fulfillment of non-standard orders, the profitability of the business decreases. There is a contradiction between the need to optimise business operations to increase profits and the mission of the service enterprise; to satisfy the needs of the target customer group. In order to resolve the contradiction, it is proposed to introduce a customer needs identification phase into the optimisation process to inform the choice of optimisation techniques. The example of a catering company in Ekaterinburg shows the feasibility of selecting optimisation techniques based on an analysis of the reasons why customers refuse services. The following optimisation techniques were chosen: service format modification (the study was run prior to the pandemic outbreak), the optimisation of service assortment and personnel activities. As a result, new varieties of the catering service for the company were selected; menu options for different price ranges and target purposes were proposed; the introduction of additional services was justified. In optimising staff activities, it was decided to abandon hourly pay by linking it to the number of customers served, the complexity of the menu items, master classes, work at an offsite/stationary event, and the number of staff per shift. A new position has been added to the staffing table, allowing the company’s core staff to focus on the quality of their duties. The example illustrates the resolution of the contradiction between the optimisation goal of increasing profits and the principle of customer focus.

Abstract:
The tourism industry has found an incredibly fertile ground to reach potential customers with the growth of social media. With the influencers’ tendencies to share moments in their lives and especially about their travels, social networks have become one of the most powerful weapons that travel agencies and hotels use to attract as many customers as possible. The phenomenon of influencers is one in development in our country as well. New accounts are constantly appearing on social networks, promoting brands from many fields (beauty, fashion, cooking, sports and even tourism). We are witnessing a revolution in the consumption of audiovisual content, and the development of the concept of influencer confirms this. The main purpose of this paper is to explore how influencers can influence consumers’ decisions in choosing a hotel. It will focus on research on attitudes and opinions on social media and information in tourism in Romania. The data were collected through an online opinion poll and were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Research has shown a great advantage in using influencers to attract customers. However, customers who choose certain hotels through influencers come with higher expectations, which is why the quality of services must rise to the highest standards.

Abstract:
We examine how emerging market (EM) foreign exchange (FX) markets respond to innovations in the monetary policy in advanced economies over the crisis period. We focus on the case of the European Central Bank (ECB) which pursued a combination of different policies during the Eurozone sovereign crisis. In a new econometric framework, we identify responses of foreign exchange markets in three EM economies (Hungary, Poland and Turkey) to different types of ECB policies. We find weak effect of the ECB’s Euro liquidity provisions on the EM foreign exchange markets. In contrast, while the ECB’s foreign exchange liquidity provisions as well as government bond interventions and policy rate changes did not impact the FX levels, they led to higher uncertainty in the FX markets. The results are indicative of the additional, uncertainty channels through which monetary policy shocks in advanced economies may affect the business cycle fluctuations in the EM economies.

In ASME 2013 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2013-62354.

Full text
Abstract:
Lean Engineering has come a long way from its first conception in the 1940s. What started as a production philosophy to enable manufacturing in Japan under severe resource constraints has developed into a globally adopted, widely aspired, often misinterpreted, and sometimes poorly understood, way and means of “doing business”. Short-sighted implementations of lean engineering in industrialized countries in a first wave in the 1970s were quickly accompanied by the slogan ‘lean is mean’ because of the focus on short-term financial gains at the expense of a complete understanding of the entire production and value chains. In a second wave in the 1990s, the focus of lean engineering implementations shifted to the core objective of lean engineering philosophies, the establishment of flow in the value chain through standardization. In parallel, Systems Engineering has continuously developed as a discipline which has moved away from the integration of components and subsystems, to the co-development of such units and building blocks of engineering and engineered products. This continued development of Systems Engineering as a discipline reflects the growing demand for systems thinking competency, to challenge the complexity of manufacturing and operations in an environment where product development, production and distribution is spread over large, not co-located teams on all continents. In this paper, the authors tie together the developments, tools and methodologies of Lean Engineering and Systems Engineering, and they show the growing similarity of both disciplines. In fact, these disciplines often describe the same effects, processes, and challenges in the workplace. The similarity has grown to a level where value streams in production or service delivery are analyzed and described in terms of one engineering discipline, while following methodologies and applying tools stemming from the other engineering discipline. The authors advocate that the debate should therefore not be over which engineering discipline to follow, but what tools and methodologies are most appropriate to enhance systems thinking competency, and to understand complexity in systems.

TANG, Denise Tse-Shang, Stefanie TENG, Celine TAN, Bonnie LAM, and Christina YUAN. Building inclusive workplaces for lesbians and bisexual women in Hong Kong’s financial services industry. Centre for Cultural Research and Development, Lingnan University, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.14793/ccrd2021001.

Full text
Abstract:
Workplace inclusion is a core component of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Hong Kong. Workplace inclusion points to the need for employers to recognize diversity among employees, to acknowledge their contributions to the work environment and to raise professional standards for the work force. Diversity within a workplace indicates inclusion of persons with different backgrounds as in racial, ethnic, sex, health status, sexual orientation and gender identity. Women are already less represented at senior levels across various business sectors in Hong Kong. Lesbians and bisexual women face a double glass ceiling in the workplace as a result of both their gender and sexual orientation. Funded by Lingnan University’s Innovation and Impact Fund, and in partnership with Interbank Forum and Lesbians in Finance, Prof. Denise Tse-Shang Tang conducted an online survey and two focus groups targeting lesbians and bisexual women working in Hong Kong’s financial and banking industry. The aim of the study is to examine the specific challenges and barriers faced by lesbians and bisexual women in Hong Kong’s financial services industry. We found that only 37% of survey respondents were out at work, with 23% partially out to close colleagues. In other words, there are still key concerns with being out at work. On the issue of a glass ceiling for LGBT+ corporate employees, 18% of the survey respondents agreed and 47% somewhat agreed that such a ceiling exists. When asked whether it is harder for lesbians and bisexual women to come out in the workplace than it is for gay men, 32% agreed and 46% somewhat agreed. 27% agreed and 39% somewhat agreed with the statement that it is difficult for lesbians and bisexual women to climb up the corporate ladder. Other findings pointed to the low visibility of lesbians and bisexual women in corporate settings, lack of mentorship, increased levels of stress and anxiety, and the fear of being judged as both a woman and a lesbian. Masculine-presenting employees face significantly more scrutiny than cisgender female employees. Therefore, even though discussion on diversity and inclusion has been on the agenda for better corporate work environment in Hong Kong, there still remain gaps in raising awareness of lesbian and bisexual women’s issues.

Abstract:
A study was performed by the Energy Branch of the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, on behalf of the US Army Installation Management Command under the Installation Technology Transition Program. The focus of the study was related to maintainability and operability issues associated with High Performance Sustainable Buildings (HPSBs). This study was conducted primarily based on information gleaned from telephone and web conference discussions with installation Directorate of Public Works personnel including Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Chiefs, energy managers, maintenance supervisors, and maintenance technicians. Experiences with HPSBs varied from installation to installation. For example, some installations had very positive experiences with photovoltaic (PV) arrays while other sites questioned their practicality due to maintainability problems. One site noted that PV technologies are changing so rapidly that procuring spare/repair parts becomes difficult or impossible when vendors discontinue supporting their older technologies or manufacturers go out of business. Based on discussions with the installation O&M personnel, a table of pro and con recommendations for 25 technologies, which are commonly implemented on HPSBs, was prepared and is included in this report.

Abstract:
A number of sites around the United States have used activated carbon (AC) amendments to remedy contaminated sediments. Variation in site-specific characteristics likely influences the long-term fate and efficacy of AC treatment. The long-term effectiveness of an AC amendment to sediment is largely unknown, as the field performance has not been monitored for more than three years. As a consequence, the focus of this research effort was to evaluate AC’s long-term (6–10 yr) performance. These assessments were performed at two pilot-scale demonstration sites, Grasse River, Massena, New York and Canal Creek, Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), Aberdeen, Maryland, representing two distinct physical environments. Sediment core samples were collected after 6 and 10 years of remedy implementation at APG and Grasse River, respectively. Core samples were collected and sectioned to determine the current vertical distribution and persistence of AC in the field. The concentration profile of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in sediment pore water with depth was measured using passive sampling. Sediment samples from the untreated and AC-treated zones were also assessed for bioaccumulation in benthic organisms. The data collected enabled comparison of AC distribution, PCB concentrations, and bioaccumulation measured over the short- and long-term (months to years).

Abstract:
Schools routinely face federal and state mandated changes, like the Common Core State Standards or standardized testing requirements. Sometimes districts and schools want to take on new policies and practices of their own, like anti-bullying programs or using technology to deliver instruction. Regardless of the origin of the change, implementation requires them to take on additional work; yet experts estimate that only 30 to 50 percent of major change efforts in organizations will succeed. Failing change efforts result in not only financial losses but also lowered organizational morale, wasted resources, and lost opportunities. For schools where resources are already stretched thin, the consequences of failed change initiatives can be particularly devastating. In this paper, we discuss results of a study, over a school year, of school principals who were working on implementing a new change initiative in their schools. We apply lessons from the change management literature and focus on the importance of assessing readiness for change as a key step in ensuring the success of new initiatives. We share examples of a change readiness rubric to help schools and districts successfully lead change.

Abstract:
To address chronically low primary school completion rates and the disconnect between learners’ skills at the end of primary school and the skills learners need to thrive in secondary school identified in many low- and middle-income countries, more investment is needed to improve the quality of teaching and learning in upper primary grades. Accordingly, we provide guidelines for improving five components of upper primary education: (1) In-service teacher professional development and pre-service preparation to improve and enhance teacher quality; (2) a focus on mathematics, literacy, and core content-area subjects; (3) assessment for learning; (4) high-quality teaching and learning materials; and (5) positive school climates. We provide foundational guiding principles and recommendations for intervention design and implementation for each component. Additionally, we discuss and propose how to structure and design pre-service teacher preparation and in-service teacher training and ongoing support, fortified by materials design and assessment, to help teachers determine where learners are in developmental progressions, move learners towards mastery, and differentiate and support learners who have fallen behind. We provide additional suggestions for integrating a whole-school climate curriculum, social-emotional learning, and school-related gender-based violence prevention strategies to address the internal and societal changes learners often face as they enter upper primary.

Turner, Paul, and John O'Brien. Review of the FSA’s research programme on food hypersensitivity. Food Standards Agency, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.bka542.

Full text
Abstract:
The overarching mission of the Food Standards Agency (FSA) is tothe ensure that food is safe, food is what it says it is and that consumers can make informed choices about what to eat. These are of central importance to consumers with food hypersensitivity(FHS).Food hypersensitivity (FHS) encompasses both immune-mediated food hypersensitivity (food allergy and coeliac disease) and non-immune food intolerances. FHS is a complex, multifactorial disease of concern to multiple stakeholders including consumers with FHS, their families, clinicians, regulatory agencies and policy makers, scientists, food manufacturers and food business operators. It affects around 5-8% of children and 2-3% of adults in the UK, and although rare, can be fatal. Public concern over FHS has grown in recent years. In the UK and elsewhere, food recalls due to the presence of undeclared allergens feature predominantly in food alerts; legislation over food labelling has become clearer, and consumers and producers are more aware of FHS. The FSA has been a major funder of research into FHS for over 2 decades, and the outputs of the research programme has had significant impacts at a national and global scale, most notably in the area of the prevention of FHS in children and the presence of declared and undeclared allergens in food products. Strengthening protections for consumers with FHS is a top priority for the FSA. The FSA has established a Food Hypersensitivity Programme Board to oversee and coordinate its work in this area. The working group was tasked with reviewing the research into FHS supported by the Food Standards Agency to date, and prioritising those priority areas where the current scientific evidence is limited and therefore should be a focus for future research investment. The aim –to make the UK the best country in the world for consumers with food hypersensitivity.
