Abstract:
South Africa and Botswana share a border with Zimbabwe, and ostensibly the same political system, but are these countries, and their neighbour Namibia, on the same political trajectory? Within southern Africa, there has been an observable increase in dominant party systems, in which one political party dominates over a prolonged period, within a democratic system with regular elections. This party system has replaced the one party system that dominated Africa’s political landscape after the first wave of liberations in the 1950s and 1960s. Other countries in the developing world, such as India, Mexico, South Korea and Taiwan, once had dominant party systems which have since developed into multi-party democracies. By comparing the political systems in southern Africa with these previously dominant party systems, this book seeks to understand the trend of dominant parties, and its implications. The salient question posed by this book is: Which route are Botswana, Namibia and South Africa taking? It answers by drawing conclusions to indicate whether these countries are moving towards liberal democracy, as in the four non-African comparisons; authoritarianism, as in Zimbabwe; or a road in between.

Abstract:
With the development of fiber optical data transmission technologies and infrastructure on a global scale, the use of fiber optical sensors to perform sensing functions is becoming increasingly important mainly due to their advantages, such as small size, light weight, multiplexing capabilities and others. Therefore, in order to ensure more efficient use of optical sensor technologies, it is necessary to research and search for new solutions for the integration and use of fiber optical sensors in existing and future fiber optical communication system architecture. The main goal of the Doctoral Thesis is to study and evaluate the interaction of FBG fiber optical sensor networks and WDM-PON metro-access transmission systems implemented in a single system with theoretical and experimental research. In order to evaluate their performance in a unified system, a detailed study of the interaction between the FBG optical sensor network and the fiber optic data transmission system has been performed by implementing mathematical modeling and experimental development of such systems.

The first step in understanding the production economics side is to understand the main five sectors in our food system and how they are related. Chapter 11 gives an overview of the five main sectors in the food system -- from the field to the fork. The chapter gives data on the contribution each sector makes to the US food dollar. All of these sectors are trying to answer the same fundamental questions that all economic systems are designed to answer. Therefore, it is beneficial to couch the discussion in a larger context of economic systems and systems theory. Understanding these broader principles provides a very constructive framework for discussing the challenges facing the food system.
