Abstract:
Foldable furniture is a trend of the modern furniture industry. However, apart from limitations attributed to multifunctionality and space saving characteristics, a complete design process documentation of foldable furniture is uncommon in furniture research. This study aims to develop a space-saving multipurpose table for improved ergonomic performance. Features and functions are extracted from research articles and patents for concept generation. The final concept is modelled using Autodesk Inventor Professional 2019. Mechanical simulations are done to confirm the structural integrity of the

Cylindrical Kresling origami structures are often used in engineering fields due to their axial stretchability, tunable stiffness, and bistability, while their radial closability is rarely mentioned to date. This feature enables a valvelike function, which inspired this study to develop a new origami-based valve. With the unique one-piece structure of origami, the valve requires fewer parts, which can improve its tightness and reduce the cleaning process. These advantages meet the requirements of sanitary valves used in industries such as the pharmaceutical industry. This paper summarizes the

This study investigates innovative strategies for optimising storage in small urban apartments without compromising aesthetic appeal. As urban living spaces become increasingly compact, efficient use of space is crucial, yet often leads to sacrificing design elements. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative analysis of design trends with quantitative data on spatial functionality. Key design strategies examined include space optimisation through the integration of multifunctional furniture, minimalist design principles, and hidden compartments. In particular, multifu

Abstract:
For origami-based designs to be functional, they need to be stable. Typically, stability is achieved through the introduction of exterior supports or members. This work focuses on incorporating stability into deployable origami-based engineering applications, including the development of deployable stiffeners or hard stops and generating concepts for stable origami-based systems in specific applications. Two types of deployable stiffeners are developed. Models for transcrease hard stops are presented, which can be directly implemented into origami-patterns to block motion at a specified angle.

Then three solutions are proposed, namely, discarding polygonal faces, constructing rigid-foldable origami mechanisms and constructing scissor-like elements, so that the prior unexpandable uniform convex polyhedron can be expanded. We present a design technique for generating rigidly foldable quadrilateral meshes, taking as input four arrays of direction angles and fold angles for horizontal and vertical folds. By starting with angles, rather than vertex coordinates, and enforcing the fold-angle-multiplier condition at each vertex, it is possible to achieve arbitrarily large and complex panel arrays that flex from unfolded to flatly folded with a single degree of freedom. Furthermore, the design technique is computationally simple, reducing for some cases to a simple linear programming problem. The resulting mechanisms h

Urbanisation and population growth challenge the housing market in urban areas globally. The unavailability of sufficient lands, limited housing spaces, high demand and high housing prices caused housing unaffordability. Consequently, micro-living has been successfully implemented in high-density urban areas worldwide to address housing unaffordability. In Sri Lanka, middle-income households in Colombo are the most vulnerable to housing unaffordability. Accordingly, this research aimed to investigate the suitability of micro-housing to address the issues in middle-income households in Colombo,
