Full textThe idea of decadence developed during the second half of the 19th century based on a pessimistic vision of the historical, social and cultural context (the end of the second empire, military defeat, the rise of the middle class, bourgeois vulgarity, the triteness of naturalism) and the development of theories of degeneracy, which appears as a new form of fate. Classicists in literature condemned this general decadence and also stigmatized those in contemporary literature who, paradoxically calling themselves "decadent" in the manner of Baudelaire whom they venerated, reacted against it and sought to promote and put into practice a mode of thought and an aesthetic of refinement which, while being fully of their time, would surmount the objective decadence of the age. This "decadent" literature conceives decadence as essentially the physical and mental decay of the male, for which the woman is the prime instrument. In addition, it analyses the mechanism by which the "decadent" mind destroys itself and sinks into madness of its own motion. It is the profound and fatal void of the woman…

Full textThe main objective of this study is to approach the libertine novels of the xviiith century (until the publication of les amours du chevalier de faublas by louvet de couvray in 1789), as a questioning on the involvment of madness and libertinism - way and mean of being - to the becoming of human in the world. Libertinism always developing within a determined society and in the relationship with others, the issue of madness is perceived in three different aspects : the social angle, the psychological angle and the interactional angle. Highlighting the representation of madness and the links woven between mental disease and a certain kind of relationships based on the libertine system, this study leads to a better comprehension of the libertine phenomenon itself

Full textTraditionally conceptualised as the underside or the outside of reason, madness most often rhymes with excess; as such, it continually threatens to transgress all definitional or conceptual limits set by rational thought. Indeed, at the core of rationality is an impulse to delimit and classify, of which categories of genre and gender are quintessential examples. Starting from the observation that depicting madness regularly entails crossing, questioning and redefining genre and gender boundaries, this work investigates how literary representations of madness relate to the classification and conceptualisation of gender and genre in a selection of novels, short stories and plays by six different writers – Janet Frame, Jenny Diski, Sarah Kane, Ian McEwan, Anthony Neilson, and Will Self – published between 1951 and 2004. With the subversion of established categories as their central aim and dynamics, these works call for an exploration of the specific way in which depictions of madness, by using the border as one of their core motifs, impact the conceptualisation of borders. No longer a mere demarcation or dividing line between spaces, or simply a meeting point, the border becomes a full-blown space for individuals and texts to inhabit. Indeed, through their representations of madness, the borderline stories under study seem to embrace and promote both an aesthetics and an epistemology of the in-between. This work therefore focuses on the images and uses of liminality in stories of madmen and madwomen that, by remapping textual and sexual identities, have begun to chart these “lands to come” which, according to Deleuze and Guattari, are the true destination of all writing

Full textMadness in France as in China, is a word used in a traditionally "vague" meaning, but full of richness, which extents from excess to meaningless combining also significant forms of psychiatric semiology. In our universe, unconsciousness is originated from a certain consideration upon madness : it is indebted to it. The literary "vanguard" in France especially regards the unconsciousness as omnipotent and inexhaustible; the modern Chinese edge towards people who think unconsciousness possesses an "incredible" fertility, but it is moreover an early containment of man backing onto himself leading to the necessity to liberate himself. Through Lautreamont and Luxun's works, this study tries to present over the renewal, better than the modernity of madness literature, in the order to obtain thoroughness. It aims to prove the explanations of madness literature, the links between madness and the principal currents concerning psychoanalysis, psychiatry, philosophy, metaphor, and techniques of literature, so it will permit to observe an evolution and to unveil the perspective of madness literature

Full textPatrick McCabe belongs to a generation of Irish writers, like Roddy Doyle, Dermot Bolger, and Colm Toibin, who witnessed conservative Ireland transition into the very model of globalisation. In his novels, McCabe depicts various mad characters on the margins of society, and breaking with convention, he urges us to hear them speak. The purpose of this work is to analyse the writing of madness in McCabe’s novels, and to highlight the methods that he uses to guide the reader through the twists and turns of the mad psyche. The first part of this study will bring to the fore the various ways in which McCabe’s notion and representation of madness challenge the basic principles of the novel genre and its internal architecture. How does the organization of McCabe’s works illustrate madness and chaos? The answer lies in defining the fragile equilibrium that he maintains between the deconstruction naturally associated with madness and the minimal structure essential to the reading of a literary work. The second part will show the importance of meaning in the representation of madness. How are deliriums represented? How is it possible to understand them and why are they significant? In the novels under study, madness is not antinomical to sense; on the contrary, it is deeply rooted into, conditioned and caused by sense. Finally, the obvious repetitions of fundamental principles will lead to the examination of the numerous rewritings that are at the core of McCabe’s representation of madness. This new perspective will help us to better understand the various sources that have influenced McCabe's works, should they be literary, musical, or cinematic
