A modification of the method for determining the total content of phenolic compounds in plant tissue extracts with the Folin-Denis reagent and the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent has been carried out, allowing to establish the correspondence of the results obtained when using them. The method using the Folin-Denis reagent is adapted for conducting determinations in microvolumes. For the method using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, the concentration of the latter (0.4 N, a 5-fold dilution of the standard reagent) and the composition of the reaction mixture were selected, using which the optical densities

Objective The aim is to verify our earlier suggestion which accounted for the dynamics of volatile compounds extraction from the herb Prunella vulgaris (PV) using steam distillation. Then, the anti-oxidative property of PV is explored. Methods Because we suggested earlier that the inefficient extraction using steam distillation was due to the obstruction of a mass of herb in the steam flow path, we used hydro distillation which tried to eliminate this obstacle. We used GC-MS to characterize the volatile compounds extracted, and thus compare the extraction efficiency. Then, treating the c

Spectrophotometric antioxidant assays can generally be divided into two fundamental categories: single electron transfer (SET)-based assays and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT)-based methods. In SET-based assays, the progression of the electron exchange reaction is determined by the redox potential of the substrates. In contrast, HAT-based methods assess the antioxidant’s ability to transfer a hydrogen atom to a radical, thereby stabilizing it. The objective of this article is to provide a critical evaluation of antioxidant spectrophotometric assays. Assessing the antioxidant potential of food sho

Generally, regulation states that herbal medicines are remedies containing plants or preparation of plants as active ingredients only. Paracetamol is one of the drugs that is frequently added in herbal medicine to enhance the effect as an analgesic. The government regulation disallows chemical drugs contained in herbal medicine due to the toxic effect of uncontrolled consumption. On this study, the optical sensor membrane from polymer poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was synthesized by phase inversion method and was used to detect paracetamol in herbal medicine. A method for the preparation of the extract was chosen, which enabled to isolate mostly phenolic compounds. According to the measurements with Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, obtained extract comprised total polyphenols (181.41 mgGAE/g of extract) from which flavonoids contributed to 7.8 % (14.15 mgquercetin/g of extract). Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis showed that the phenolic ketones were predominant in the extracts of whole phenolic compounds. According to results of tw
