Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Patellofemoral chondropathy (PFC) is one of the most important causes of patellofemoral pain syndrome. PFC may occur as a result of anatomic reasons such as patellar malalignment and/or increased patellofemoral joint stresses. Most research on this subject has involved sports injuries and anatomic variations. The literature is scarce on PFC related to the dance. METHODS: Fourteen dancers (14 knees, all male) were found to have PFC based on MRI evaluations and clinical examinations between January 2010 and December 2019 (3 dancers were excluded due to prior surgeries of the knee). Age, sex, side of injury, range of motion, Q angle, types of dances, body mass index, and patellar specifics (alta, baja, Wiberg) were recorded for 11 dancers included in the study. We observed PFC at the femoral contact areas (FCA) and patellar contact areas (PCA) of Goodfellow description. RESULTS: Chondral lesions were observed at Gooodfellow areas FCA-3 in 2 dancers, FCA-4 in 5 dancers, PCA-2 in 10 dancers, PCA-3 in 10 dancers, and PCA-4 in 9 dancers. CONCLUSION: Dance styles that include frequent deep flexions and strolling on a flexed knee joint may be risk factors for chondral lesions in the contact area of the femur in male dancers.

Basal cell carcinomas (BCC) of the foot are rare. A review of the English literature found only 23 cases of BCC reported in the foot, none of which involved the nail unit. The nail unit, which is composed of the nail bed and nail-folds, is an exceedingly atypical site for basal cell carcinomas. Abstract:
Obesity is one of the santarapanajanya vyadhi, originated as a result of deteriorated life style which includes sedentary daily routine and junk food habits. It occurs when the consumption of calories becomes more than its expenditure. It serves as an etiological factor for many diseases. It has reached to the epidemic proportion, affecting majority of the urban population. Obesity can be estimated by various scales among which Body Mass Index (BMI) and skin fold measurements are most common. Obesity is indirectly proportional to Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). BMR is the amount of energy required to do the involuntary work of the body which is around 47 calories per hour per square meter of body surface in males and 37 in females, but may vary with temperature as a rise in 1o F of body temperature may lead to an average increase of 7% of BMR1. Prior to the management of this disorder, it is obligatory to reach to its roots. Ancient scholars tried to elaborate the causes, pathology, types, complications and management of obesity in their own way, and this description is scattered here and there. The present article will try to assemble these references, and find out a common conclusion.

A lot of controversy in literature still surrounds the way in which free amino acids (AA), peptides and true protein nitrogen influence fibre digestion and the activity of bacteria which ferment structural carbohydrates in the rumen. One of the major impediments in the understanding of ruminal microbial protein synthesis is the lack of a simple and accurate procedure for measuring its yield. The aim of this study was two fold: firstly, to make further investigations into the effects of feeding different forms of supplementary nitrogen to a rapidly fermented high fibre diet on microbial activity, and secondly, to compare three different procedures of estimating microbial protein synthesis under the same conditions in continuous culture (CC).

Abstract:
Foliage of non-induced `Katahdin' potato plants was treated with BAS-111. Other plants were sprayed with GA3 solution and placed in an inducing chamber. All treatments were repeated the following week. After final treatment, apical, sub-apical, medial, and basal nodal stem segments were taken from each plant, surface-sterilized, and placed on MS culture media. After 3 weeks in a darkened incubator, cultures were examined. Induced plants produced 5.5 times more tubers than did non-induced segments. BAS-111 applied to non-induced plants was associated with 63% reduction in rhizome length and 3.2-fold increase in tuber number. GA treatment to induce plants resulted in improved rhizome elongation, delayed and reduced tuberization when compared with control explants. Lower nodes produced more and larger tubers than did younger tissues. Results will be discussed in light of current literature.

Abstract:
Abstract Context: Because of its outstanding sensitivity, stimulation of calcitonin secretion with iv injection of pentagastrin is widely used for biochemical diagnosis of medullary thyroid cancer. Objective: The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between the results of the pentagastrin stimulation test and extent of disease in patients with previously untreated medullary thyroid cancer. Design: This was a retrospective study. Setting: The investigation took place at a tertiary referral center. Patients: Included were 89 patients with increased basal calcitonin levels who had a pentagastrin test at this institution before initial neck surgery for medullary thyroid cancer. Main Outcome Measure: Measurements included basal and stimulated calcitonin levels, carcinoembryonic antigen levels, primary tumor diameter, extrathyroidal extension, lymph node metastases, and distant metastases. Results: There was a strong dose-dependent relationship between a less than 10-fold increase in preoperative calcitonin levels after iv stimulation with pentagastrin and both the frequency (41–54 vs. 4–27%; P = 0.001) and number (means of 3.0–10.8 vs. 0–1.1 positive nodes, P < 0.001) of lymph node metastases. Weaker associations were identified with the respective frequency of extrathyroidal extension (14–27 vs. 0–7%; P = 0.027), distant metastasis (9–23 vs. 0%; P = 0.017), and postoperative normalization of calcitonin (40–55 vs. 53–82%; P = 0.029). On multivariate analysis, only lymph node metastases were associated with a less than 10-fold increase in preoperative calcitonin levels. Conclusions: Based on these clinical data and preclinical literature, reduced responsiveness to stimulation with pentagastrin may reflect early dedifferentiation. Evidence of this condition may enable early risk stratification in patients with medullary thyroid cancer.

Abstract:
All battles cannot be won by swords or guns alone, particularly when the battle is against discriminatory ideologies and supremacist ideas. Dalit Writer Bama’s book Karukku is one such attempt to contest, resist and replace all such flawed ideas and hegemonic dogmas that have dehumanized Indian Dalits for centuries. This testimonio exposes the shameful and ugly facets of Indian societal structure, in which caste-based stratification has unfortunately and unjustly treated those very masses who have most diligently served this ancient civilization with their sweat and blood. Through this book, Bama makes an impactful appeal to her fellow folks—the Dalits and, in particular, to the Dalit women—to join hands together in re-conceptualizing and re-asserting their collective as well as individual identities so as to claim their rightful place in the Indian social order. This article not only delineates upon these multiple dimensions of this masterpiece that have contributed substantially to Dalit feminism but also argues that this book must be read as a thought-provoking piece of ‘Resistance literature’. Further, this article will also make an attempt to trace the intersecting trajectories between ‘Dalit feminism’, ‘Black feminism’ and ‘Postcolonialism’.

Abstract:
The stress that might result in animals from the routine handling that most experimental studies involve, e.g., weighing, injecting, and blood sampling, is usually assumed to be minimal when the animals look quiet. However, the intensity of this stress remains largely ignored. We have developed a system that allows blood samples to be taken from freely behaving geese without entering the animal room. In these entirely undisturbed geese, the humoral indexes of stress, i.e., blood levels of catecholamines, corticosterone, and lactate, were as low or even lower than the lowest values previously reported for birds. Remarkably, the mean basal values for epinephrine and norepinephrine were 90-fold and 5-fold, respectively, below the lowest values in the literature. Stress-induced variations in pH that would have concealed detection of nutrition-induced changes in pH were eliminated. In contrast, even though the birds looked quiet during a short 5-min routine handling procedure, to which they had been accustomed for weeks, there was a dramatic increase in the level of humoral indexes of stress. These increased severalfold within only 2 min, and the return to initial values could take up to 1 h. Acid-base balance was also disrupted. Thus, in studies on animals, the absence of stress cannot be deduced from only behavioral observations. Only a system for taking blood without human interference may enable stress-free investigations.

Abstract:
Caffeine is a plant alkaloid present in food and beverages consumed worldwide. It has high lipid solubility with recognized actions in the central nervous system and in peripheral tissues, notably the adipose depots. However, the literature is scant regarding caffeine’s influence on adipocyte functions other than lipolysis, such as glucose incorporation into lipids (lipogenesis) and amine oxidation. The objective of this study was to explore the direct effects of caffeine and of isobutylmethylxanthine (IBMX) on these adipocyte functions. Glucose transport into fat cells freshly isolated from mice, rats, or humans was monitored by determining [3H]-2-deoxyglucose (2-DG) uptake, while the incorporation of radiolabeled glucose into cell lipids was used as an index of lipogenic activity. Oxidation of benzylamine by primary amine oxidase (PrAO) was inhibited by increasing doses of caffeine in human adipose tissue preparations with an inhibition constant (Ki) in the millimolar range. Caffeine inhibited basal and insulin-stimulated glucose transport as well as lipogenesis in rodent adipose cells. The antilipogenic action of caffeine was also observed in adipocytes from mice genetically invalidated for PrAO activity, indicating that PrAO activity was not required for lipogenesis inhibition. These caffeine inhibitory properties were extended to human adipocytes: relative to basal 2-DG uptake, set at 1.0 ± 0.2 for 6 individuals, 0.1 mM caffeine tended to reduce uptake to 0.83 ± 0.08. Insulin increased uptake by 3.86 ± 1.11 fold when tested alone at 100 nM, and by 3.21 ± 0.80 when combined with caffeine. Our results reinforce the recommendation of caffeine’s potential in the treatment or prevention of obesity complications.

Precancerous lesions and skin cancer are infrequent in Asians, and have received little documentation in the literature. Brazil has the world's largest contingent of Japanese immigrants and their descendants, and 70% live in the State of São Paulo. The prevalence of such skin lesions in Japanese-Brazilians is unknown. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of actinic keratoses and non-melanoma skin cancer in first and second-generation Japanese-Brazilians over 30 years of age, without miscegenation, living in the city of Bauru, São Paulo State, in 2006. Of the 567 Japanese-Brazilians that underwent dermatological examination, actinic keratosis was diagnosed in 76, with a mean age of 68.9 years, and a single case of basal cell carcinoma was detected in a 39-year-old female patient. In Japan, prevalence of actinic keratosis varies from 0.76% to 5%, and the incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer is 1.2 to 5.4/100 thousand. Japanese-Brazilians from Bauru showed a 13.4% prevalence of actinic keratoses and earlier age at onset. Proximity to the Equator and a history of farming contribute to these higher rates. Presence of solar melanosis was associated with a 1.9-fold risk of developing actinic keratosis.

Since the emergence of humanity, symbolic communication has been considered a creative language that has attracted the attention of many different disciplines. Due to the indifference of culture, the phenomenon of folk tales and legends claims that there is more space in literature. The purpose of this study is to create a knowledge base for spatial and cultural memory and to define the cultural heritage of Anatolia, which has hosted many civilizations, through historical periods. This study, which will contribute to a better understanding of the causes of cultural memory in terms of transferring stories for generations, aims to explain the relationship between space and cultural memory through Anatolian legends. For this reason, the study will explain folk tales with a semantic approach in terms of symbols and values. Within the scope of Anatolian legends, the codes and secrets of myths, fairy tales, and legends will be explained using qualitative research method and document analysis technique, and the relationship between space and cultural memory will be examined.

Derived from research undertaken in various cultural settings, and encompassing spiritual, traditional, religious, and folk beliefs, the knowledge base on diverse explanatory models of mental illness is burgeoning. Unfortunately, there is a dearth of literature that examines these explanatory models from the sort of overtly clinical perspective that would be of practical relevance to clinicians. To be able to identify, honor, and work with a diverse range of explanatory models of mental illness is an ethical imperative in an increasingly globalized and culturally diverse society. The purpose of this chapter is to address this gap in the literature by exploring diverse explanatory models from a clinical perspective to inform the work of psychiatrists and other mental health clinicians. We propose that David Bohm’s concept of dialogue is a potentially useful communication framework that can aid clinicians working with patients with diverse explanatory models of mental illness.

The introduction places the book in the context of the larger literature on Islam in Anatolia. It explains how this book is part of a recent wave of studies that take a critical, revisionist approach to the deeply entrenchedparadigmdeveloped by the early-twentieth century Turkish historian Fuad Köprülü, highlighting in particular the perils of a binary vision of religion based on high Islam and folk Islam, and the ahistorical application of the notion of syncretism in Alevi-Bektashi studies. The paper has a two-fold purpose. The first purpose of the research is to clarify the concept of “readiness of teachers of higher education institutions to use distance learning technologies”, to determine the components and indicators of teachers’ readiness to use distance learning technologies. The other purpose is to announce the results of the conducted online survey on teachers’ readiness for distance learning; understand how distance learning methods are being implemented, which need to be modified or improved, establish the depth of complications associated with transitioning to online teaching due to the introduction of COVID-19 quarantine and provide the information to stakeholders to further improve the process of distance learning. The article is based on the survey of scientific literature on teachers’ readiness/preparedness to distance education and results of the authors’ COVID-19 Teachers’ Questionnaire with 485 faculty members of major higher education institutions of Cherkasy region (Ukraine). The author proves that the effectiveness of distance learning depends on subjective (teachers’ and students’ preparedness for distance education) and objective factors (material and technical base of higher education institutions). Components of teacher’s readiness for distance learning and their indicators are summarized: motivational, cognitive, operational, technological, creative, personal. The outcomes of the questionnaire have identified that most respondents lack theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for the implementation of distance learning and encounter difficulties in teaching during quarantine.

Abstract:
Concept drifts occurring in data streams will jeopardize the accuracy and stability of the online learning process. If the data stream is imbalanced, it will be even more challenging to detect and cure the concept drift. In the literature, these two problems have been intensively addressed separately, but have yet to be well studied when they occur together. In this paper, we propose a chunk-based incremental learning method called Dynamic Weighted Majority for Imbalance Learning (DWMIL) to deal with the data streams with concept drift and class imbalance problem. DWMIL utilizes an ensemble framework by dynamically weighting the base classifiers according to their performance on the current data chunk. Compared with the existing methods, its merits are four-fold: (1) it can keep stable for non-drifted streams and quickly adapt to the new concept; (2) it is totally incremental, i.e. no previous data needs to be stored; (3) it keeps a limited number of classifiers to ensure high efficiency; and (4) it is simple and needs only one thresholding parameter. Experiments on both synthetic and real data sets with concept drift show that DWMIL performs better than the state-of-the-art competitors, with less computational cost.
