Abstract:
In order to make good her claim to be of all divinities the most important and generous, Folly in Erasmus's Moriae encomium begins her argument, according to rhetorical theory and practice, with the strongest proofs in her arsenal. First of all, she argues, it is she who has given us life, the greatest gift of all. Who among us would have been born without our parents’ folly? Second, it is the spice of folly that makes life enjoyable. For what is life if you take away merriment, pleasure, andjoy? And third, it is folly that rules the best and happiest time of life—childhood and youth—and resto

Abstract:
<p> This project examines the ethical implications of relationships between Shakespeare&rsquo;s fools and their audiences. More specifically, I argue that in instances within certain comedies Shakespeare presents different kinds of fool/observer interactions in order to investigate whether fool figures, as literary devices, could produce the moral reflection and amendment that humanists like Erasmus often associated with such characters. Typically, Shakespeare portrays these humanist conceptions of the fool&rsquo;s utility as being limited by complications of the specific rhetorical situations

Abstract:
This thesis argues that the textual stylistics, and embodied forms, of Early Modern folly are complicit in constructing and maintaining networks of knowledge. This function emerges from a Menippean history that positions the Silenus Box – an interface of grotesque form and hidden knowledge – as an allegory for exegesis. In applying this allegory to the aesthetics and bodies of Early Modern folly, this thesis suggests that folly assumes an arbitrative role in epistemic networks. A prominent marker of this function is the discursive communities forming around, and through, foolery, rendering it

Chapter 1 considers Barclay's 'Ship of Fools' in relation to other folly literature in English, particularly Lydgate's 'Order of Fools', Skelton's 'Bowge of Courte', and 'Cocke Lorrel's Bote'. Motifs, allegories and the woodcuts of the text are discussed and some are included in an Illustrations section. Chapter 2 discusses Erasmian folly looking back to the Neoplatonic writings of Nicholas of Cusa, and to the debt Erasmian exegeses owe to Origen. Erasmus' own philosophical and theological views are examined, particularly as they are found in his 'Enchiridion', and in the influence of Thomas à

Abstract:
This thesis explores the complexities to be found in the characters of Lear's Fool from King Lear and Feste from Twelfth Night. It begins with an investigation of the history behind the taxonomy of fools that William Shakespeare created in his works. The rest of the thesis is devoted to examining the many facets of the two aforementioned fools, with the goal of discovering just how important and influential they are to their respective plots and to the world of literature. Finally, there is a brief coda that explores the other striking similarities that the two plays have in common.

Abstract Various concentrations of folly hydrated agarose and alginate gel formed into cuboid shapes are tested in unconfined compression with impermeable plattens to determine Young’s modulus at equilibrium (relaxed elastic modulus) of the gel blocks.
