Abstract:
Do cultures differ with respect to judgments of rationality? If so, does it follow that rationality is culturally specific, or that cultures have their own “rationalities?” If so, does it further follow that the philosophical status or worthiness of multiculturalism as a social value or ideal varies from culture to culture? In this article I consider the relationship between rationality and multiculturalism; offer a characterization of the latter that enables it to survive Stanley Fish’s claim that “no one could possibly be a multiculturalist in any interesting and coherent sense”; criticize Richard Shweder’s case for “divergent rationality”; and argue for a “universalistic,” culture-independent understanding of rationality.

Rose, David C. Culture as Moral Beliefs. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199330720.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explains why cultural beliefs—specifically moral beliefs—are more important than cultural practices for building a high-trust society because when trust-producing moral beliefs are well ensconced, trust-producing practices naturally follow. Since it is large-group trust that is the key, our innate moral beliefs, which naturally support small-group trust, are inadequate. What is needed are invented moral beliefs that can support large-group trust and the high-trust society. Two problems must be overcome in large-group contexts: the empathy problem and the greater-good rationalization problem. This chapter explains why overcoming these problems requires that beliefs instantiate moral tastes that function prerationally. It also explains why such beliefs must stress moral restraint over moral advocacy.

Konerding, Peter, Felix Wiedemann, and Lale Behzadi, eds. Approaches to Arabic popular culture. University of Bamberg Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.20378/irb-49890.

Full text
Abstract:
Over recent years, Arabic popular culture has become a focal point of West Asian and North African studies. Most of the new research dealing with it concentrates on the ‘popular’ as opposed to an intellectual ‘high’ culture far from the harsh and hierarchically organized reality many Arabic-speaking societies face today. Popular cultural practices are thus seen as a rejection of the elite and a stance against those who have ‘something to loose’ within paralyzed and conservative communities. Albeit not denying the subversive political potential associated with these practices, this volume intends to take a more nuanced and broader perspective. Arabic popular culture might engage with emancipatory claims, but it might as easily follow the capitalist rulebook of global marketing. It might fight against oppressive authorities, yet it can equally become their symbol. Approaches to Arabic Popular Culture therefore closely looks at the aesthetic implications of a topic ranging from Lebanese hip hop over Algerian pop novels to jihadi chants in the ‘Islamic State’ as well as from Egyptian mahraganāt music over sarcastic stories about hash dens and time travel in downtown Cairo to Saudi-Arabian YouTube-influencers. Thus, the theoretical scope widens and the reader is taken on a delightful journey to the unsettling pleasures of contemporary Arabic art and culture.

Abstract:
Over the past fifty years, Wendell Berry has been arguing that our most pressing ecological and cultural need is a renewed formal intelligence. Such an intelligence does not look for big, one-size-fits-all solutions. Rather, it discerns and fosters patterns of health. When W. H. Auden famously declared that “poetry makes nothing happen,” he was correct that poetry, like the other arts, doesn’t coerce matter in the way that a tractor or an oil rig or a bomb does. Yet poetry is “a way of happening,” its beauty shaping readers’ imaginations to better perceive and understand formal patterns. Such formative work fosters the deep, lasting change needed to cultivate a more sustainable culture and economy. In particular, Berry’s literary forms embody and cultivate virtues of renewal. Though our contemporary culture fears and shuns death, natural ecosystems provide a model in which death feeds new life and healthy human communities follow an analogous order. Cultures maintain such a sustainable order by practicing virtues of renewal, virtues that stand in sharp contrast to the techniques of control preferred by our industrial culture. Combining literary analysis with cultural criticism, this book argues that Berry’s literary forms shape his readers to desire and practice these virtues of renewal. Poetry can’t magically create a healthy economy, but Berry’s poetry, essays, and fiction cultivate the kind of imaginative, virtuous people who can, as he puts it, “practice resurrection.”

Full text
Abstract:
Religion and ritual have featured in human society for many thousands of years. The complexity of the rituals of different religions and their diversity can seem overwhelming at times, but interestingly all religions appear to follow many similar themes. Even though each culture has its own approach to death, in almost all faiths, death is seen as a time of transition. This chapter covers approaches to death found in the major UK religions and cultures. Examining the main features of Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Judaism, Buddhism, and traditional African cultures, this chapter covers both the general aspects of these faiths and cultures, and the main beliefs and practicalities that these groups associate with the death of a child. As well as providing information on specific issues, this chapter covers usual procedures before and after death, funeral rituals, and typical rituals on the anniversary of death.

Grosjean, François. A Journey in Languages and Cultures. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198754947.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The author of this book is known the world over for his work on those who live with two or more languages. He has been called “one of the grand old men of research on bilingualism” because of his holistic view of bilingualism and his many studies undertaken over a span of some fifty years. And yet, little is known about François Grosjean. In what is a very human and at times touching work, he reveals how the vagaries of life took him from being a monolingual child in a small village outside Paris to being bilingual and bicultural in four different countries. He has changed his dominance in English and French a number of times because of his repeated migrations, and has also acquired, used, and then lost other languages. His life in languages and cultures played a major role in his scholarly work on bilingualism and biculturalism which he describes in a clear and readily understandable prose. Anyone interested in what it means to grow up and to live as a bicultural bilingual will want to follow the author’s own journey through languages and cultures.

Abstract:
This book explores the role of folk cultural discourse and practices in the cultural politics of post-Mao China by focusing on Yan'an, headquarters of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) from 1937 to 1947. It examines the relation between the government and local communities for heritage preservation and cultural tourism in the age of runaway urbanization by focusing on the moments of mobilizing and representing folk traditions in both socialist and late socialist Yan'an. It articulates the cultural logic of the late socialist Chinese society that corresponds to a new form of political economy through an analysis of three rural cultural practices in Yan'an and their entanglement with political, capital, and local forces: folk storytelling, folk paper-cuts, and spirit cult practices. This introduction discusses historical events and narratives that contribute to the development and modern meanings of folk culture and Yan'an. It also provides an overview of the author's fieldwork and research methodology as well as the chapters that follow.

Abstract:
Over 120 scholarly articlesCrime and punishment fascinate. Overwhelming in their media dominance, they present us with our most popular television programs, films, novels, art works, video games, podcasts, social media streams and hashtags. This encyclopedia, a massive and unprecedented undertaking, offers a foundational space for understanding the cultural life and imaginative force and power of crime and punishment. Across five areas foundational to the study of crime and media, leading scholars from five continents engage cutting edge scholarship in order to provide definitive overviews of over 120 topics. In the context of an unprecedented global proliferation in the production of images, they take up the perennial and emergent problems of crime's celebrity and fascination; stereotypes and innovations in portrayals of crime and criminals; and the logics of representation that follow police, courts, capital punishment, prisons, and legal systems across the world. They also engage new, timely, and historically overlooked categories of offense and their representations, including child sexual abuse, violence against women, and human trafficking. A series of entries on mediums and methods provide a much needed set of critical approaches at a historical moment when doing media and visual research is a daunting, formidable undertaking. This is also a project that stretches our understanding of conventional categories of crime representation. One example of this is homicide, where entries include work on the ever-popular serial killer but also extend to filicide, infanticide, school shootings, aboriginal deaths in custody, lynchings, terrorism and genocide. Readers will be will be hard-pressed to find a convention, trope, or genre of crime representation that is not, in some way, both present and enlarged. From film noir to police procedurals, courtroom dramas and comedies to comic books, crime news to true crime and reality tv, gaming to sexting, it is covered in this encyclopedia.

Abstract:
Islam, which means active surrender and submission to God, emphasizes both beliefs and practices based on the two primary sources of Islam: the Qur’an and Sunna. Muslims across America base their religious practices on the same requirements gleaned from scripture and tradition. Although they represent many different races and cultures and even many different interpretations of Islam, they follow the same basic expectations in terms of affirming the oneness of God and the Prophethood of Muhammad (shahada), prayer (salat, duʿa), fasting (saum), almsgiving (zakat), and pilgrimage (hajj), as well as other prescribed acts of worship. For some Muslims, the details by which they implement these expectations reflect the cultures from which they have originated, while others are focused on understanding how traditional practices of the faith can find their expression in the new culture of America. Such efforts represent nothing new for Muslims, whose practices always have differed slightly in different places according to the conditions of time and place. The main features of Islamic beliefs in particular and Islamic practices in general are constant and remain the same across the many cultures and traditions that represent American Islam.

DeFino, Dean J. The HBO Effect. Bloomsbury Publishing Inc, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798765100691.

Full text
Abstract:
No advertisers to please, no censors to placate, no commercial interruptions every eleven minutes, demanding cliffhangers to draw viewers back after the commercial breaks: HBO has re-written the rules of television; and the result has been nothing short of a cultural ground shift. The HBO Effect details how the fingerprints of HBO are all over contemporary film and television. Their capability to focus on smaller markets made shows like Sex and the City, The Sopranos, The Wire, and even the more recent Game of Thrones and Girls, trigger shows on basic cable networks to follow suit. HBO pioneered the use of HDTV and the widescreen format, production and distribution deals leading to market presence, and the promotion of greater diversity on TV (discussing issues of class and race). The HBO Effect examines this rich and unique history for clues to its remarkable impact upon television and popular culture. It's time to take a wide-angle look at HBO as a producer of American culture.
