Full textThe present work is the product of my research into the historical and linguistic aspects that underlie the concept of the phoneme. Our main idea originated from two different extracts by the Russian linguist Roman Jakobson: 1) on the genesis of the phoneme: “the search for the ultimate discrete differential constituents of language can be traced back to the sphoṭa doctrine of the Sanskrit grammarians and to Plato’s conception of στοιχεῖον, but the actual linguistic study of these invariants started only in the 1870s” (Jakobson, 1962:467); and 2) on the founders of Phonology: “The first foundations of Phonology were laid by Baudouin de Courtenay, Ferdinand de Saussure and their disciples” (Jakobson, 1962:232). Thus, we attempted a historical and linguistic “reconstruction” of names, facts and theories that comprise the concept of a phonological unit and that of the phonological structure of language. We started with the study of the Science of Language in ancient India (in particular the grammar of Sanskrit), followed by the study of the Greek alphabet (including its implications concerning the Greek language, as well as Grammar and Philosophy). Finally, we attempted a precise “cut”, so to speak, on the moment in the history of Linguistic ideas when the scientific concept of the phoneme was outlined, defined and incorporated into the terminology of modern linguistic epistemology. The great theoreticians of the incipient school of General Linguistics, of Phonology and of the phoneme are, as Jakobson stated, the Swiss linguist and philologist Saussure, and the Polish philologist and phonetician Courtenay; yet the story inside the phoneme is anything but a simple one. Recently, meticulous scholarship has rescued a great part of this long forgotten history, in what concerns the ancient theories of both the Hindu and the Greek grammarian-philosophers, and the unpublished manuscript works of Saussure and the works of Courtenay and his students (among them the Polish professor Mikołaj Kruszewski), works that so far have remained without translation into Portuguese. Our task, then, has been to bring this history to light, its developments in the field of Linguistics in general, and Phonology in particular. We carried out this analysis by means of a careful study of the phoneme, a concept in which several hundred years of history and linguistic ideas have crystallized.

Full textThis work presents a study on the use of adaptive devices for text-to-speech translation. The work focuses on the development of a grapheme-phoneme translation method for Portuguese based on Adaptive Automata and the use of this method in a text-to-speech translation software. The presented method resembles human behavior when handling syllable separation rules, syllable stress definition and influences syllables have on each other. This feature makes the method easy to use with different variations of Portuguese, since these characteristics are invariants of the language. Portuguese spoken nowadays in São Paulo, Brazil has been chosen as the target for analysis and tests in this work. The method has good results for such variation of Portuguese, reaching 95% accuracy rate for grapheme-phoneme translation, clearing the 90% mark after resolution of ambiguous cases in which different representations are accepted for a grapheme and generating phonetic output intelligible for native speakers based on concatenation synthesis using syllables as concatenation units. As final results of this work, a model is presented for grapheme-phoneme translation for Portuguese words based on Adaptive Automata, a methodology to choose the correct phonetic representation for the grapheme in ambiguous cases, a software for Adaptive Automata simulation and a software for grapheme-phoneme translation of texts using both the model of translation and methodology for disambiguation. The latter software was unified with the speech synthesizer developed by Koike et al. (2007) to create a text-to-speech translator for Portuguese. This work evidences the feasibility of text-to-speech translation for Portuguese using Adaptive Automata as the main instrument for such task.

This research has as main objective at studying the variation of palatal lateral sound in the speech of 04 (four) cities of the Para State: Curionópolis, Itupiranga, Dom Eliseu and Tucuruí. Since their foundation, these cities have been receiving migrants from several areas of the country. The heterogeneous constitution of the population provokes in these communities the emergence of linguistic variety that presents phonetics and grammatical features of several areas of the country. The sample of the community is made of 46 informants that are stratified socially. The methodological framework adopted is that of quantitative sociolinguistics and geography linguistics. Most of the linguistic phenomena presented here, specifically the phonetics ones are in variation. Most of them are produced in a systematic way happen, in a variable or systematic way practically in the whole national territory. The main external factor that can be responsible for the variation is the education level, which influences in the production of the phonetic phenomena. The VARBRUL statistic software was used to calculate the probabilities of the linguistics and social variables. The main results showed six varieties of /ʎ / phoneme.

Full textStop voiced and nasal consonants have articulatory similarities. In some indigenous Brazilian languages, these groups of phones are allophones of the same phoneme. In such systems, there are intermediary allophones that have an oral-nasal contour. Dâw language, although described with distinct phonemes for the stop and nasal classes, has contour consonants as allophones in a very restricted situation: coda after an oral vowel. This dissertation aims to describe and analyze the contexts of nasalization in Dâw language through elicitation of original data. We undertook three fieldwork studies in which we made recordings of data with native speakers. We obtained acoustic data using a digital recorder and aerodynamic data using EVA2 equipment that has separate sensitive transducers for oral and nasal airflow measurement. We used the distribution concept to analyze the data, due to the absence of minimal pairs, since the language is typologically isolating-analytic. We corroborated the previous description (Martins, 2004) on the categorization of both consonant and vowel nasals as distinct phonemes. We also noticed the occurrence of nasal spreading from approximant tautosyllabic to nasal vowels, as described, and added to the description the spreading process for the voiceless glottal fricative /h/ when it is in the same syllable as a nasal vowel. We were able to determine that the prosodic environment of the nasal spreading is the syllable, because this phenomenon does not occur between syllables. We also analyzed whether the oral contour of nasal consonants could be a long-range process. However, the data proved it to be local range, also restricted to the syllable and not the adjacency. Oral-contour nasal consonants hark back to a former state of the language, which can also be seen in its sister languages Hup and Yuhup, with the restriction of mixed oral and nasal adjacencies. As it occurs only in the coda, we attribute the fact that this allophone has maintained this position due to contact with Brazilian Portuguese (BP), because regressive nasal spreading occurs in BP, which would be undesirable for Dâw language, which has phonemic distinction between oral and nasal vowels. This desynchronization of the velar gesture causes the contour due to articulatory similarities between stop voiced and nasal consonants. There were data where the aerodynamics did not match the acoustics, i.e., we heard nasalization, but there was no corresponding nasal airflow. We believe that this discrepancy is due to some articulatory maneuver that is not understood. As regards processes analyzed by Prosodic Phonology, we concluded that both processes do not occur in hierarchically superior prosodic constituents

Full textPrevious research about the point of articulation of Spanish phonems have been taken place. However, the effect that orofacial structures development may have requires further research in Chile. This knowledge could be an important contribution to support decision-making in clinical speech therapy, for example to raise the objectives of an intervention. Objective: The purpose of this study is to describe the articulatory point of the phoneme /s/ in a group of Chilean children who are changing central incisors. Material and method: This study is a non experimental, descriptive and cross-sectional design in time. A sample of 27 Chilean children between 5.0 and 9.5 years old was studied. They attend kindergarten, first, second or third year of basic education. Results: Predominant type of articulatory point in children who are changing central incisors is the lower post-dental articulatory point (55.56%), followed by interdental articulatory point (29.63%) and finally the upper post-dental articulatory point (14.81%). Conclusions: Children who are changing central incisors tend to present lower post-dental articulatory point in /s/ phoneme, despite the absence of these. However, there is a certain percentage of subjects that present others articulatory point, that suggests that variable "change of incisors " might be affecting the articulation of the phoneme /s/.

Portuguese and Spanish are two languages very close to each other as they belong to the family of the Romance languages. However, their differences deserve to be highlighted as they are manifested in the Spanish writing activity, through various types of errors, among them, the spelling ones. In this sense, from the analysis of transcripts of dictations made in SFL (in High School and Undergraduate) classes, this work aims to (i) analyze the spelling errors resulting from poor understanding of Spanish phonemes and; (ii) to detect the occurrence of spelling errors resulting from the phonological transference from Portuguese to Spanish, as well as from the morphological transference from the one to another; plus the unfamiliarity or he forgetfulness of the orthographic rules of the new language. The object of research is the spelling of fifteen words extracted from the text ¿Sabías que los nidos de las abejas se llaman colmenas? and the relation of the phonemes /β/, /b/, /x/, /λ/, /θ/, /ɾ/, /r/ and /n/ with the graphemes found in these words. The corpus is composed by 38 dictations transcribed by Brazilian students, among adolescents and adults. The text brings 103 words in a basic vocabulary and comes from a comic book written in Spanish. Regarding theory, in this work we have the contribution of the Contrastive Analysis (LADO, 1957), the Analysis of Errors (CORDER, 1967; ELLIS, 1994) and the analysis of Interlanguage (SELINKER, 1972); as well as theory regarding Phonetics and Phonology, Spelling (in Language Teaching) and phonological-orthographic peculiarities between Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese (MASIP, 2001, 2010, FROST, 1992; QUILIS, 2010); besides the relation between the phonological and the orthographic systems themselves (CAGLIARI, 2002; LLOP, 1999); among other authors. In terms of methodology, we have the contribution of Variationist Sociolinguistics (LABOV, 1972, TARALLO, 2007, GUY & ZILLES, 2007) in the quantitative analysis of the social variables involved in the research (age, sex, school level and type of previous educational institution). Among some of the results obtained, the analyzes indicated, for example, (1) that the phoneme-grapheme relation between / β / and the letters e

This study investigates the use of Intonational Phrase (IP) boundary cues on syntactic processing by Brazilian Portuguese (henceforth, BP) adult speakers. Several studies conducted in the psycholinguistic subarea called Sentence Processing discuss to what extent the initial decisions of the parser – human language processor – would be guided by strictly syntactic information, or also by other linguistic or extra linguistic information. For this, the comprehension of the structurally and temporarily ambiguous sentences – garden-path sentences – has been tested using different techniques and experimental tasks, and experimental results suggest that adult speakers use prosody as a source of information in sentence processing (e.g. KJELGAARD & SPEER, 1999; CLIFTON et al, 2002; MILLOTTE et al, 2007; DEDE, 2010; FONSECA, 2012). In order to contribute to this discussion, we chose a little-investigated structure in our area of studies, specially, in BP – sentences with coordinated DPs, for which ambiguity is undone by prosody ([The judge intimates João]IP [and Pedro and Lucas await (for) the final result]IP – [The judge intimates João and Pedro]IP [and Lucas awaits (for) the final result]IP). We use the phoneme restoration technique masking the number marking on the verb, in order to check if PB native speakers recognize a simple or conjoint subject based on IP boundary cues. We conducted two experiments using the visual word choice task (STOYNESHKA et al, 2010), and two experiments were applied using the sentence-image verification technique, with attention manipulation resource. This procedure allowed us to verify the recovery of a stimulus in working memory and the comparison of linguistic and visual stimuli in the comprehension of a sentence. Our working hypothesis is that the prosodic information can help the mental construction of the meaning of a sentence. Results suggest that the parser takes into account the prosodic information, since the participants' answers are compatible with the intonation of each stimulus.
