Full textTo the present day, there is no consensus in the Spanish literature on the subject about the delimitation of the acoustic characteristics of sounds such as: obstuent, fricative or aproximants. In this PhD Thesis work we present an acoustic characterization of the approximant realizations of the /b, d, g/ sounds of the peninsular Spanish language, after having analysed, with the spectrographic analysis programme Praat, a sample of 372 statements taken form several TV shows from different local communities: a total amount of 447 sounds from Andalusia; 442 from the Basque Country and 404 from Madrid. In order to tackle our objective, we have based our research on our previous work ‘‘Las approximants [β, δ, γ] del espanol en habla espontanea’ (‘the approximants [β, δ, γ] of the Spanish language in spontaneous speech’) which constituted the final work of the masters of didactics of language and literature from the university of Barcelona. In this work we set the basis of the method that allows us to describe in depth the acoustic characteristics of these sounds: duration, armonicity, sonorityand intensity.

Full textThe present study has a two-fold purpose: the acoustic analysis of the first two formants of isolated vocal sounds produced by two Spanish infants between 0;4 and 3;0 years, and phonetic transcription of these emissions. The methodological aspects of the study are: recordings of infant’s spontaneous emissions were made at weekly sessions between 0;4 and 3;0 years. Spectrograms were made for isolated vocal sounds (which met the previous criteria) in order to measure the first two formants of each vowel sound. Then, formant frequencies were plotted in vowel charts. Every vowel selected was listened and classified according Spanish vowel system by five Spanish adults. Statistical analyses were made to determine formant frequencies variations. Results obtained from these analyses were: 1. Infant’s formant frequencies are higher than adult’s. 2. In the first few months of life, predominant vowels are mid and low central vowels, and front vowels. 3. There is a vowel’s overlapping during the first year of life. 4. Some vocalic sounds can be produced within first month of life, but others like [u] require of an anatomical maturation and a better motor control system. 5. There are no significant changes in average F1 and F2 across the age period. 6. There are individual differences in sound repertoires. The main conclusions reached were: 1. Infant’s formant frequencies are higher than adult’s. 2. In the first few months of life, predominant vowels are mid and low central vowels, and front vowels. 3. The high back vowel [u] is the last vowel to be produced on the back axis. 4. Infant’s vocalic sounds are partly influenced by target-language. 5. It was observed a clustering of vowels in the acoustic space. 6. Variations between formant ranges of vowels can be explained by infant’s particular anatomical configuration of vocal tract. 7. There are no significant changes in average F1 and F2 across the age period. 8. Individual differences were noted in the quality of vocalic sounds and in the number of these.

Full textThere has been plenty of papers which offered a description of the historical change from Lj in Latin to /x/ in current Spanish but most of them lack an explanation of its inner reasons. As a consequence, this investigation follows the theories held by authors like Lindblom, Ohala or Blevins, who suggest that the analysis of sinchronic phonetic variation may explain the nature of diachronic sound change. In order to account for the palatalization of the lateral sound in the last stages of Latin due to the arising of the glide and its evolution to /x/, we used empirical data from experimental phonetics and from dialectal studies. The combination of both makes possible to understand that the palatalization processes are attributable to inherent driving forces of the Spanish phonological system.

Full textThis PhD thesis is a description of the behavior of Spanish rhotics in spontaneous speech. We start from the results obtained in the pilot study The teaching of pronunciation through spontaneous speech: acoustic analysis of rhotics, made as final work of the master Formación de Profesores de Español como Lengua Extranjera by the University of Barcelona. The corpus used this time is broader and exhaustive because it includes the both Peninsular dialectal varieties of Spanish language: the Northern range and the Southern variety. Appoximately 200 rhotic sounds from a total of 10 autonomous communities (11 corpus) have been drawn: Andalucía, Asturias, Canarias, Castilla la Mancha, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Madrid, Murcia, Navarra and País Vasco; resulting in the analysis of 2238 rhotics in uncontrolled speech. This acoustic analysis was conducted by Praat software.

Full textThis research is based on the acoustic and perceptive analysis of vowels and combinations of vowels spoken spontaneously in Central Catalan. An acoustic description is created for each vowel sound and the influence that the place of articulation of the previous and subsequent adjacent sounds has on the vowel is verified. The field of dispersion is plotted and a comparative analysis is presented of the results obtained from previous research based on a more formal speech model. We have used the Oral corpus of spontaneous speech (Font-Rotches, 2006) and that of Rius-Escude (2012), selecting 30 hours of audiovisual material and extracting 557 fragments. We have built a corpus of 2,221 vowels and vowel combinations, uttered by 257 speakers of both genders in a real and genuine context of spontaneous speech. In order to reduce the acoustic differences, we have normalised the data of the vowel formants -Watt & Fabricius (2002)- of the 67 speakers that meet the requirements, obtaining a normalised corpus with 896 vowels. The methodology used is experimental, empirical and quantitative. We have carried out perception tests to validate the hypotheses established and we have used the PRAAT voice analysis and synthesis application and the SPSS Statistics 17.0 program and G¬STAT.2.0. The objective is to contribute to knowledge regarding the acoustic characterisation of vowels in the Catalan language in spontaneous speech and to facilitate the teaching-learning of Catalan pronunciation for new learners at different levels of education. The results obtained that have educational consequences are that the vowels of Central Catalan in spontaneous speech are more open, more central and that they do not have a single pronunciation, previous vowels are perceived better than subsequent ones and that the point of articulation of the previous and subsequent adjacent sound has little influence on them. We regard to the combination of two vowels, in general, both are pronounced. Teaching-learning proposals for Catalan pronunciation must be based on three fundamental pillars: teach the language based on the model of spontaneous speech, contextualise pronunciation activities and work on pronunciation with a communicative focus.

Full textThis research offers a theorical and dialectological introduction of the vowels of two different varieties of Standard Mandarin (SM): Pǔtōnghuà (Standard Mandarin Spoken in China) and Guóyǔ (Standard Mandarin spoken in Taiwan). Considering that Standard Mandarin adopted the pronunciation from the Beijing dialect, the comparative analysis of Mandarin vowels between Beijing Mandarin and Taiwan Mandarin is also conducted. This thesis is divided into two parts. The aim of the first part is to perform an acoustic analysis of Taiwan Mandarin vowels due to the fact that the Mandarin vowel system has been a controversial topic. In this section, the IPA phonetic transcription of Taiwan Mandarin vowels is also proposed. The second part focuses on the second language acquisition of Mandarin pronunciation by L1 bilingual Spanish/Catalan learners. Unlike Spanish and Catalan, Mandarin has complex vowel system that comprises several allofonic varieties of each phoneme. Therefore, we attempt to discover language transfer and pronunciation problems of Mandarin vowels pronounced by native Spanish/Catalan learners.

This research aims to contribute to establish the individuality of the speech of bilingual speakers in Catalan and Spanish from the analysis of acoustic-phonetic parameters commonly analyzed in the practice of forensic speech comparison and to study the effects, on the acoustic level, that the use of one language or the other produces in these parameters. Therefore, it tries to provide new acoustic-phonetic data for specialists in forensic phonetics to be compared with a greater degree of certainly known and unknown speech samples in different languages.
