Abstract:
The distribution channel structure significantly affects the distribution costs, and in the food industry the distribution costs have very often an important share on the total products cost. In the food industry, merger & acquisition conditions in the Czech Republic are the expected synergic effects. One of them is the cost saving following up from the redesign of the distribution system. On the case of a real project of the new mineral waters distribution system, the authors demonstrate their methodology and methods for the distribution system redesign, which integrates together the problem of the distribution object location with the distribution strategy choice and transport system design.

Abstract:
The determinants and/or economic effects of modern food distribution channels have attracted much attention in previous research. Studies on the welfare consequences of modern channel options, however, have been sparse. Based on a broader definition of modern food distribution channels including midstream processors and downstream retailers (supermarkets, hypermarkets, brand-named retailers), this study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by exploring the distributional implications of farm households’ choice of modern food distribution channels using a large and unique farm household dataset in Taiwan. Making use of the two-step control function approach, we identify the effect of modern food distribution options on farm households’ profitability. The results reveal selling farm produce to modern food distributors does not produce a positive differential compared to the traditional outlets. Another dimension of farm household welfare affected by the choice of modern food distribution channel is income inequality. We apply the Lerman and Yitzhaki decomposition approach to gain a better understanding of the effect of the marketing channel option on the overall distribution of farm household income. The Gini decomposition of different income sources indicates that the choice of modern food distribution channels results in an inequality-equalizing effect among the farm households in Taiwan, suggesting the inclusion of smallholder farmers in the modern food distribution channels improves the overall welfare of the rural society.

Abstract:
Semakin panjang saluran distribusi, semakin banyak aktivitas logistik yang dilakukan, dan semakin besar potensi kontaminasi produk halal dengan bahan yang nonhalal.KATA KUNCI: level, logistik, halal, pemasaran, bakso, sosis, cireng isi daging; level, logistic, halal, marketing, meatball, sausage, fried tapioca-filled-with-meat DISTRIBUTION CHANNEL OF MEAT BASED SNACK THAT IS CONSUMED BY SCHOOL STUDENTSABSTRACTDistribution channels play role in logistic activity of food product. In halal perspective, distribution channels have a strong relation with halalness of food product. The halalness of food product does not only depend on the origin of material but also guarantee of non-halal material free contamination during the product flow from point of product origin to point of product to be consumed. The aim of this research was to define the distribution channel of snack that is consumed by school students in Bogor city including meatball, sausage, and fried tapioca-filled-with-meat related to halal logistic perspective. The method of this research was by interview using questionnaire. Sampling method was by purposive sampling. Based on the result, the distribution channels in meatballs marketing, sausage marketing, and fried tapioca-filled-with-meat marketing were zero-level channel, three-level channel, and four-level channels, respectively. A longer distribution channel makes a greater number of logistic activities and it has a bigger potency of contamination of non-halal material to the halal product.

Abstract:
<p><em>Fresh milk is highly nutritious food because its contain substances that complete food. The high nutritional value of milk causes a media which is preferred by the microorganisms to grow and develop in a very short time become unfit milk consumed when handled incorrectly. Safety milk from contamination during the distribution process becomes very important because of a race against time. Considering the conditions on the farm people milk distribution process normally without treatment (cooling), so that the required distribution by the shortest route, the fastest time and low cost. This study aims to minimize lines and distribution costs of fresh milk as marketing efficiency efforts. The research location is taken purposively based on the consideration that the District Mojosongo has the second largest population of dairy cows in Boyolali. The analytical method used is the analysis of marketing costs, margins and profit marketing, marketing efficiency and Traveling Salesman Problem analysis to determine the shortest distance, fastest time and lowest cost. Fresh milk marketing channels used dairy producers in the district Mojosongo there are three channels following the channel I: Farmer to Consumer, Channel II: Farmers to Traders collector to Consumer and Channels III: Farmers to Traders collector to wholesaler to the milk processing industry. Channel I is the most efficient marketing channel because this channel sells directly from farmers to consumers. The most effective marketing channels using the Travelling Salesman Problem is the distribution channels II because this path has the shortest distance, fastest time to maintain the quality of fresh milk and cost efficiency.</em></p>

Abstract:
Profit maximization in the agricultural sector should go in the direction that will enable agricultural products to be marketed through a realistic distribution channel. This applies in particular to the distribution channel of the food supply. In addition, the food distribution system should focus on the dominant observation of the production of food produced inland. Food distribution should take into account market competition, distribution and logistics costs, the existence of unequal quantities of food shipments, etc. That is why it is of great importance to adopt realistic models that will appreciate modern innovative ways of logistics that will help real food distribution. In addition, up-to-date information and communication technologies should be respected to support such distribution approaches. This paper draws attention to the importance of implementing a possible new food distribution model based on an innovative approach.

"Ideal free distribution theory as a tool to examine juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) habitat choice under different conditions of food abundance and cover." Abstract:
We investigated the mechanisms affecting habitat choice by juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) in relation to the patchy distribution of food and cover. We tested the following hypotheses: (i) the distribution of juvenile coho, both between patches in a pool and between separate pools in a channel, corresponds numerically to the food input rate of those habitat patches as predicted by the "input-matching rule" of ideal free distribution (IFD) and (ii) the addition of instream cover, by increasing visual isolation among competitors, promotes input matching both within and between pools. We conducted our experimental work in artificial channels and we used two different types of cover, instream and overhead. In the absence of cover and with either no differences or relatively small differences in food abundance between patches, the spatial distribution of juvenile coho responded numerically to the input rate of food as predicted by the IFD. However, when differences in food abundance between patches were relatively large or cover was present, fish distributions consistently undermatched food input rate in the rich patch. Coho foraged in open patches away from cover within single pools but preferred pools with cover when choosing between separate pools. Several IFD models were used to examine the observed dispersion patterns.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discuss how corporate philanthropy influences channel behaviour in the context of food security. Design/methodology/approach – The authors chose an exploratory case-study design to guide the investigation, based on Yin’s (1994) argument that case studies are the preferred strategy when “how” or “why” questions are being posed, and when the focus is on a modern phenomenon within a real-life context. A survey study was focused on formal interviews onsite where product development and marketing occurred. Findings – It is known that the concepts of power and dependency are central to channel relationships. In food distribution, it has been argued that food distributors hold more power than food processors due to end-user proximity (Ruyter et al., 1996). For corporate altruism acts to have an impact when generated by functions other than distribution and retailing, one can only argue that channel members would require a significant number of antecedents to be successful. In Campbell’s case, as shown in Table I, many became enabling to a successful outcome while others arguably made the project more challenging. Research limitations/implications – With food security, the authors would need to consider other relationships within the marketing channel. The macro-environment of the marketing channel could also be incorporated in a future study. This study also does not compare other campaigns related to a similar product. In fact, it is believed that Nourish is unique in that it is the first ready-to-eat, ready-to-ship food product which was developed with the intent to serve the greater good. Practical implications – Philanthropic acts by one company can influence other channel members when intent is driven by clear altruistic and politically strategic motives, and reflects individualistic and paternalistic attitudes. Campbell’s was paternalistic but attempted to serve many causes at once. Committing to only one cause in the future may help consolidate resources and corporate energy around one single cause. Social implications – Corporate philanthropy describes the action when a corporation voluntarily donates a portion of its resources to a societal cause. Nourish’s case is different in that it is not just a linear transactional gift between a corporation and an organization actively involved in the cause. The project relies on the active participation of other channel members, including consumers, to support the campaign led by Campbell’s. It was a form of an extendable altruistic venture which allowed all channel members to contribute to the cause. Originality/value – Food processors that want to address the issue of food security or any other societal causes, domestically or abroad, will not cease. The challenge for food processors lies in the functional nature of their role within marketing channels. Since they do not transact with consumers directly, they depend on distributors and retailers to relay their philanthropic convictions to consumers. Based on the Nourish case, this study set out a series of antecedents which would support similar initiatives.

Abstract:
The queuing system can influent customer satisfaction and always interesting to analyze. The queuing at HokBen use a Single Channel Multi-Phase system, 1 service to offer and prepare order menus and 1 cashier. The study was conducted at the Hokben Ujung Menteng Store in East Jakarta, for one week, at 4 sessions during rush hour. After the data obtained, a Single Channel Multi-Phase queue parameter was calculated, namely: the average arrival per unit time, the average service unity of time, the level of server usage, the number of customers in the queue, the number of customers in the system, the waiting time in the queue, the waiting time in the system, and customer probabilities in the system. The result showed that the customer's arrival pattern meets the Poison distribution and the service pattern meets the Normal distribution, but the service time still greater than the standard service time, and of course not satisfy to customers, because they waited a bit longer. After a multi-channel multiphase simulation, which used 2 service lines, the service time smaller than the standard service time, and service more efficient. This research becomes useful for Hokben management specifically, and also for the fast-food industry in general. Keywords: Queue, Single channel single-phase, multi-channel multi-phase

Frankfurters containing a solid metal object (nail) were subjectively evaluated on the basis of emulsion color change adjacent to the metal, insertion channel development, and molding of the meat around the object. Frankfurters contaminated during the processing phase of production, whether boiled or not boiled, showed significantly greater color change than did frankfurters contaminated during the distribution or consumer phase. However, these same frankfurters had significantly less distinct insertion channels. No channel could be observed in frankfurters which were contaminated before processing and before cooking/smoking. Molding of the meat around the object did not provide distinguishable evidence for time of insertion.

Abstract:
This dissertation studies the food distribution system in Viet Nam based on an imperfect competition approach. The first chapter analyzes the market behavior of the intermediaries in the traditional food distribution system. We model the intermediary behavior in all cases of market competition to recognize the impact of their market power on the food producers in the upstream, and on the consumers in the downstream of the traditional food distribution system. The competitive relationship between different food distribution channels is studied in the second chapter. We model the competition between the traditional and the modern food distribution system to analyze how the market behaves at equilibrium. We moreover investigate the coexistence condition which allows both channels to be active in each specific case of market competition. The third chapter studies the optimal channel choice of the farmers when agricultural cooperatives support these small producers accessing the modern food distribution system. We introduce two distribution channel vertically linked by demand. We study the quantity flow from small producers to the consumers by mean of a Nash equilibrium and address the question of the distribution of the farmers by a free entry equilibrium.Eventually, the fourth chapter analyzes the policy implication directly toward the food distribution system. We propose the theoretical model of land reform and study its impact on the food distribution system

Abstract:
Background The Swedish food distribution industry is becoming increasingly concentrated with fewer and larger supermarket chains. This has resulted in power imbalance between supermarkets and their suppliers. Despite the power of the supermarkets, the channel members recognise the need to cooperate with each other. It has become increasingly important for members of the distribution channels for fresh food to cooperate in order to offer the consumers high-quality products. The outcome of this is an elaborated relationship and a higher interaction between channel members. For suppliers that offer local products, it has proved to be of even greater importance with interaction in order to gain trust from the purchasing companies. Consumption of both local and organic fruit and vegetables has increased significantly in the recent years in Sweden. Therefore these product categories have become important to the supermarkets. Based on the lack of research of the Swedish distribution channels for organic and local fruit and vegetables, this study intends to analyse these product categories further. The study has mainly focused on how growers, who offer local or organic fruits and vegetables, can strengthen their position in the market. The study also intends to demonstrate possible differences between suppliers offering local and organic products, to see if one of these categories has a stronger market position than the other. Purpose The purpose of the study is to analyse the relationships and the power balance between members in the distribution channels for organic and local fruits and vegetables, where the focus is to compare these two product categories. Execution To answer the purpose of the study, a total of 11 interviews with five different companies in the distribution channel for fruit and vegetables were conducted. These companies were the retailer and wholesaler ICA, the wholesaler Östgöta Trädgårdshall and three producers (growers). Conclusion The study implies that suppliers for local products may have a greater power position within the studied market than suppliers for organic products. Furthermore, the study confirms that relationships are important between actors in the distribution channel of fruits and vegetables, especially in channels that involve an exchange of local products. Relationships also have an impact on the power balance between the actors thus it appeared that individual suppliers strengthen their power position towards the supermarkets by intimate relationships.

Family farming faces several barriers in the Brazilian Agricultural System. Such barriers include the lack of flow of production structure, lack of resources away from the consumer market, distance from the consumer market and the distribution of the product in relation to market access and transaction costs. A differentiation strategy for family farmers that contributes to competitiveness, is the production of organic products. Due to the fragility of family farmers in the distribution of farm products, the elimination of the middleman results in a direct marketing channel, which creates an efficient mechanism for the farmer. The analysis of a current study used the direct channel Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), which is a marketing mechanism for agriculture products used directly between farmer and consumer. The CSA have also proposed a form of sustainable agriculture, specifically related to organic farm management. By having the agents, farmers and consumers, work more closely together, prepayments may be made to the farmer in order to produce products and plan production. This research was conducted in order to analyze the marketing relationship between farmers and consumers, and used the theory of Tansaction-Costs Economics (ECT) to give theoretical basis for research. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to analyze the governance’s structure used in the CSAs of the São Paulo State and the alignment of the transaction characteristics and the characteristics of farmers’ agents and consumers involved. The research was qualitative and quantitative in nature and was applied using the Survey Method. The data was collected between December of 2015 and January of 2016 with 241 families (27.5% of the population) and 11 farmers (91.6% of the population) of São Paulo. The results indicated that the motivation of farmers to participate in CSAs involve environmental factors, as well as proximity to the consumer and ideologies. In contrast, consumers were motivated by factors that related to the environment, product quality and origin, and in the interest of helping the farmer. The analysis of the institutional environment showed that Brazilian organic production legislation is the only formal rule relevant to the activity. The farmers and consumers of CSAs that were analyzed showed good alignment on the characteristics of the transactions between agents. Farmers and consumers showed misalignment as the uncertainty, showing that there is need for adjustments to the agreement (formal / informal) between agents. There is a limited rationality between agents, since there is no exchange of information in relation to some aspects of the transaction such as: quality and quantity of consumed products, prediction of production volumes, and this impairs the prediction of future transactions. Overall, the governance structure identified in the marketing relationship between farmers and consumers is the hybrid and is appropriate for coordination efficiency and decreased transaction costs. However, certain elements, such as the formalization of the arrangements between both parties, should be incorporated within the deal in order to reduce the farmer's level of uncertainty.

Abstract: Family farming faces several barriers in the Brazilian Agricultural System. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to analyze the governance's structure used in the CSAs of the São Paulo State and the alignment of the transaction characteristics and the character... Abstract:
In a leader mass consumption company in the poultry sector, its Horeca business unit, one of the Food Service sales channel, has been showing a decreasing trend in its market position. From this premise as a starting point, a quantitative and qualitative analysis have been developed, to determine the root cause of the Horeca business unit problem. The analysis lead us to conclude that the problem cause is the inadequacy of the corporation's general distribution model applied to the Horeca business unit. A new business strategy is developed for Horeca, focused on an appropriate distribution model to respond to the critical variables of this business unit, and also taking into consideration the company context as an ongoing business which the Horeca unit is part of. To develop an improved distribution model proposal, the efficient consumer response (ECR) concept is analyzed, and two strategies were presented and evaluated: a warehouse decentralization and the certified delivery in late hours. Both were subjected to a prioritization matrix, and as a result, for the purposes of this work, the option to be implemented is the certified delivery in late hours, as an alternative that solves the Horeca distribution model problem and complements the general distribution system as an added value. The implementation of the certified delivery in late hour distribution model, is developed for an initial phase, supported by its viability financial analysis.

Abstract:
Several food and agribusiness companies are unsatisfied with the distribution of their products and services. Distribution still is a strong source of competitive advantage for companies. In products, the rate of technology transfer between companies all over the world and the global competition turns new product attributes available for competitors to copy. In prices, companies can operate in several parts of the world, creating offers at the lowest prices possible. In communications, the massive exposition of consumers builds a barrier to produce differentiation. So, in the traditional marketing’s 4 P`s, marketing channels or distribution channels are an important source of differentiation. They build stable competitive advantages because they are focused at long range planning and implementing, need a consistent structure and are focused at people and relationships. This study offers a model for distribution channels planning. A sequence of steps specially designed for food companies that want to review, or to plan the distribution channels. The model was designed based on literature review, both in marketing channels and transaction cost economics, and was submitted to 10 agents (specialists) that gave contributions to the model. The study brings contribution in gathering literature about the subject, analysing food marketing channel functions, main agents (wholesaling, retailing and foodservice) and the contributions of transaction cost economics to marketing channels.

Abstract:
Smokers who successfully quit smoking gain weight; although important factors have been identified the mechanisms remain unclear. We measured changes in body weight, fat distribution, and dietary intake of macronutrients during a 26 week smoking cessation trial with the use of nicotine and placebo patch in a Hispanic sample of smokers (88% Mexican-American). Participants were randomized to receive patch treatment for 10 weeks and then followed for 16 weeks. We found that nicotine treated quitters experienced significantly less weight gain than placebo treated quitters at 6 weeks; however by 26 weeks, there were no significant differences among treatment groups. We found that percent total body fat (%TBF) for nicotine treated female quitters changed significantly less than for placebo treated female quitters at 10 weeks (p<0.05); there were no treatment differences in change in %TBF for males at 10 weeks. Male and female quitters experienced significantly less change in %TBF at 26 weeks than continued smokers (adjusted for treatment). Dietary intake of total energy, percent of total energy consumed as fat, protein, and carbohydrate were not significantly different by treatment group from BL for males or females. Thus, although body weight increased significantly in quitters versus non-quitters; dietary intake of macronutrients did not change significantly from BL for quitters and non-quitters. This suggests that factors other than changes in energy intake are responsible for the weight gain observed in this sample of Hispanic ex-smokers.

Abstract:
Abstract This book, with its 12 chapters, not only encourages all ecologists to consider free-living nematodes as a model organism in their investigations, but also shows how important it is to study the fundamentals of ecology, for example, the distribution and diversity of a group of organisms as well as the interactions of those organisms with others. Detailed studies of this type will ultimately provide a better understanding of food webs, their role in the respective habitat, and the changes therein caused by human activities. In this context, research during the past 20 years has determined that, in addition to aquatic environments, nematodes are good indicators of sediment and soil quality. This book takes into account much of the recent research on the ecology of freshwater nematodes. It contains many new chapters as well as revisions and updates of the chapters of the 2006 book. The objective was to write a comprehensive yet readable guide for interested biologists, from students to career scientists.

Abstract:
Abstract This book applies a gender lens to examine the implications of climate change for livelihoods in vulnerable states. The goals are to enhance awareness of climate change as a gender issue, and to highlight the importance of gender in identifying livelihood vulnerabilities and in designing more robust climate adaptation measures, especially in climate-sensitive industries such as agriculture. The contributions in this book examine how the consequences of climate change affect women and men in different ways, and address the implications of climate change for women's livelihoods and resource access. The book is organized into two main sections. The first section (Chapters 2-8) examines disparities in the vulnerability of women's and men's livelihoods to climate change. The chapters in this section address issues such as gender inequalities in the household distribution of labour; differential access to agricultural livelihood inputs and assets; gender-based threats to personal safety and security; and gendered vulnerability to and experiences with climate disasters, food insecurity, and infrastructure development. The second section (chapters 9-16) takes a gender-based view of various climate adaptation initiatives in areas that rely on agriculture for subsistence and production. The contributions in this section address gender-inclusive participation in climate policy planning and decision making, the role of gender in livelihood adaptation measures, and any successes, failures, or opportunities for improvement that emerge from these efforts.

AbstractPastoralists’ livelihoods in Africa are highly endangered by adverse forces – the climate change being one among those. Against this background, climate change adaptation is conceptualized as strategic agency in the field of risk-laden livelihood environments, that is, agency in the face of risky options and non-calculable uncertainties. The chapter conceptualizes pastoralists’ livelihoods exposed to a four-fold hierarchy of environmental risks and forces defining the actors’ arena of strategic decision making: From the global scale of ever extending impacts by the climate change imperative, to the national scale of government policies in terms of decentralization, challenging people to govern and define their communal efforts in terms of climate change adaptation, and down to the regional scale, which in the presented case is dominated by a large-scale investment, the Kuraz Sugar Development Project, which again confronts local actors with adverse forces toward villagization and eviction from pasture grounds. Right at the end of this hierarchy and in accordance with discourses on “climate services,” the end-users and local actors, the pastoralists, are confronted with and offered a product that they can input into their decision making: cattle feed from the residues of the irrigated sugar cane. The question remains whether substantive aspects of processes turning into true environmental and social justice in terms of recognition, procedures, and distribution will be paid attention to.

Abstract:
Air circulation and temperature distribution inside a domestic refrigerator chamber are two important factors in refrigerator design. They are critical for food quality control and energy saving and are affected by natural/forced convection, radiation and layout of the stored food. Knowledge about the actual air flow and temperature distributions inside a refrigerator is required to improve temperature homogeneity and reduce energy consumption. In present work we numerically study the air circulation and the heat transfer phenomena in a domestic frost-free refrigerator. The inner compartment, the evaporator and the outside thermal insulation foam are considered. The conjugate heat transfer problem is studied by solving the unsteady laminar Navier-Stokes equations using a finite volume method. The Boussinesq approximation is used to model the natural convection. The discrete ordinate method is adopted to take into account the radiation heat transfer between the cold back evaporator and warm surfaces to further understand the impact of radiation. The accuracy of the numerical methods is verified through grid sensitivity analysis and comparison with available numerical and experimental data. Comparisons are made with and without radiation. Our simulations show that radiation significantly changes the temperature distribution and air circulation pattern. The effects of shelf and food stored on the temperature distribution and air circulation are also studied by comparing three configurations: empty refrigerator, empty refrigerator with shelves and loaded refrigerator with food.

This study aims to investigate the complex microstructural changes in plant-based food materials during drying by using X-ray micro-computed tomography (X-ray µCT) along with the image analysis. The apple samples were dried at 60 °C and tested using X-ray µCT at different stages of drying. The porosity, cell and pore size distribution were determined from the micro-CT data set. It was observed that significant changes in porosity, cell and pore size distribution take place at different drying times and moisture contents. X-ray µCT can serve as a very promising tool to elucidate the evolution of the food microstructure during the drying process. Abstract:
Foot Ulcer in diabetic patients is a serious medical problem. A major contributor for the development of diabetic foot ulcers is a high, localized plantar foot pressure. It is believed that in diabetes the nerves in the extreme parts of the human body are damaged and cause deregulated blood flow, which may cause an insufficient blood supply. This can lead to a loss of feeling, change in shape of the feet, necrosis and ulcerations, and ultimately to partial or total amputation of the body part. The loss of feeling in the feet results in a loss of feedback to control the foot pressure distribution. It is proposed that high foot pressure concentration can be avoided by using an active, intelligent shoe insert, which is based on the mechanics of smart materials. This paper investigates the controls schemes necessary to accomplish an external foot pressure distribution scheme for preventing ulcerations or the progression of existing ulcers. A simple mathematical model of the shoe insert is developed. Foot pressure distributions for healthy subjects are used as a basis to control elevated foot pressures by changing the shape of the shoe insert. The optimal shape of the shoe insert with regard to the existing pressure distribution is computed. The optimal shape is implemented using different control schemes. The performance and the efficiency of the proposed control schemes are compared and analyzed. The main advantage of the proposed active shoe insert is its capability to sense the pressure peaks, change the pressure distribution, and provide stimuli for increased blood flow in the diabetic feet. Abstract:
Humanity is now believed to live in a new geological epoch, the Anthropocene, as changes have been reported on the atmosphere, air, water, and soil, but also on societal perceptions of these issues. This presentation departs from the theoretical assumption that the impact of the abovementioned changes on culture and the environment have not yet found a stable influence on urban planning. This presentation overviews the implications of the food system within urban planning while considering it as a socio-technical system which integrates production, distribution, transformation, consumption and disposal patterns. The production phase of the food system in particular, emerges as a fundamental planning challenge, extending to urban form solutions, individual behaviours, dietary regimes, inequalities in foodsheds planning, and the cultural capital of food. Accordingly, the food system emerges here as an opportunity to identify how current urban fabrics of cities and their rural and regional hinterlands can be transformed in terms of their metabolic function and respond to the needs of people and the environment. To do so, this presentation introduces the preliminary results of an analysis conducted by an ongoing research project SPLACH – Spatial Planning for Change, at two particular scales: the region and the neighbourhood. Thus, while focusing in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (LMA), in Portugal, we provide an analysis of the Regional Plan as well as of specific residential neighbourhoods located in LMA, regarding the relationship between the food system functioning and urban planning approaches. The analysis includes a comparative number of case studies which differ in urban form solutions, socio-economic conditions, but also geographical location. The results support the request for a stronger integration of the above-identified underexplored topics of the food system within urban planning, which will be fundamental to inform a new theory of the city that makes any serious contribution towards a sustainability transition.

Abstract:
The write-off of goods, especially in the fresh food supply chain, represents a significant cost to the company. The purpose of the research is to analyse the impact of the COVID19 epidemic in the fruit and vegetable distribution company and to determine the extent to which the epidemic in 2020 affected the company's operations and the amount of goods written off. Knowing the latter is the first step to improving processes and reducing costs in the company. The analysis was performed using a comparative study of data for 2019 and 2020. The total weight of goods sold in 2020 compared to 2019 fell by 28.6%. Similarly, in 2020 the total value of written-off goods decreased by 31.3%. Furthermore, factors influencing the value of writtenoff goods, such as the purchase value of products, the number of products, the number of orders per day and the number of employees (order preparation and weighting) were studied statistically. We found a relationship between the value of written-off goods and the number of employees and the number of products being prepared. The results represent an insight into the problem and serve as a starting point for optimizing the purchase of goods, the correct turning of stocks and work processes of employees in the warehouse, i.e. optimization of logistics processes in the company. Reducing the quantity of written-off goods is a long-term and demanding process, which significantly improves the company's profit.

Abstract:
Assuring that food products have acceptable quality and are safe to consume requires maintaining adequate nutrition levels and fulfilling consumer expectations. Quality losses can lead to food waste, resulting in increased economic costs and low consumer confidence. Therefore, quality expectations should be maintained at an acceptable level for consumer purchase and consumption. It is well known that a cold environment reduces the respiratory activities and kinematics of nutritional degradation. The cooling temperature is critical since lower than recommended cold temperatures may cause chill damage. Therefore, the food industry intensively employs cold storage methods to slow respiration rates, inhibit harmful bacterial growth, reduce water loss, and prolong shelf life in order to maintain product nutritional value and quality. Improving product cooling efficiency will reduce energy costs that are a significant expense for fruit and vegetable processors. Understanding the cooling process is key to the development of new technology and processes. However, most natural food products are not conformed to simple geometric shapes or uniform properties and distributions. Thus, the cooling process of an agricultural product (cucumbers) was investigated in this study. The study was conducted in a packing house, where the cooling temperature of the cucumbers was recorded by placing multiple thermocouples in the produce after boxing and palletizing as well as cold storage. The test results showed that individual produce cooling was relatively easy to predict. However, boxed and palletized cucumber cooling showed significant variations. For example, the temperature of the cucumbers changed depending on their location in the box in addition to the box location on the stack. In the case of boxed produce cooled by natural convection cooling, the temperature changed from 25 to 18 °C after three hours. However, in the case of palletized tunnel cooled, the temperature change ranged from 25 to 11 °C and 25 to 18 °C after nearly three hours of cooling. Indeed, the temperature differences indicated that the cooling rate has significant variations depending on the location of the produce. Some parts of the pallet received more direct contact with the forced cold air than other parts. Thus, it is very important for produce processors to understand cooling system performance. The study emphasized that efficient use of energy is one of the areas that can have not only significant cost savings but can also improve produce shelf life, reduce food waste, and maintain consumer confidence.

Abstract:
Intermittent microwave convective drying (IMCD) is an advanced drying system where a unique volumetric heating mode is facilitated. However, the physical phenomena of IMCD system and its effect on nutritional quality are not well understood yet. The aim of this research is to develop a coupled IMCD and quality prediction model and experimentaslly validate it. A coupled 3D mathematical model considering Maxwell’s equation for electromagnetic heating, and reaction kinetics for predicting quality was developed and validated. COMSOL Multiphysics, engineering software was used to solve the developed model. It is found that IMCD significantly affect the nutritional quality during drying of apple tissue. Abstract:
The present paper addresses the detailed heat transfer pattern in a two-pass rotating internal cooling channel model, with a square cross section and equipped with triangular ribs on one of its walls. The turn region consists of a smooth high curvature U-bend that generates a complex flow field and wall heat transfer. The investigation is based on Liquid Crystal Thermography (LCT) measurements in a rotating facility at Reynolds numbers varying from 20,000 to 60,000, and a maximum rotation number equal to 0.20. For these experimental conditions, the centripetal buoyancy effects are negligible. The channel is rotated around an axis perpendicular to the main flow direction in clockwise and counter-clockwise senses, in order to observe the impact of cyclonic and anti-cyclonic behavior on the heat transfer in both legs. The objective of the present study is two-fold: firstly, it aims to understand the flow physics and heat transfer phenomena at different regimes. Secondly, the detailed heat transfer measurements are intended to be a reference set for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) validation. The measurements obtained in the first leg have been compared with previous experimental data in channels with square ribs and radially outward flow, showing a similar behavior in terms of heat transfer distribution and overall dependency on the rotation number. In the second leg, the heat transfer distribution is more complex. The heat transfer distribution is not symmetric, and high gradients are present in the span-wise direction. Nevertheless, the dependency of the heat transfer to increasing rotation shows a trend similar to the one observed in the first pass. The combined effects of rib-induced secondary flows stabilization/destabilization by rotation, Coriolis-induced stream-wise vortices and high streamline curvature on the heat transfer distribution are analyzed in the paper.

Abstract:
As users of forest products and guardians of traditional knowledge, women have always been involved in forestry. Nevertheless, their access to forest resources and benefits and participation in forest management is limited compared to mens despite the fact that trees are more important to women, who depend on them for their families food security, income generation and cooking fuel. This guide aims to facilitate the incorporation of a gender lens in climate change mitigation and adaptation operations in forests, with special attention to those framed in REDD. This guide addresses four themes value chains, environmental payment schemes, firewood and biodiversity that relate directly to 1) how climate change impacts affect women in the forest and 2) how mitigation and adaptation measures affect womens access to resources and benefits distribution.
