Abstract:

Abstract:
Aims: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, and opioid agonist treatment (OAT) with methadone or buprenorphine represents the most efficacious treatment. However, data suggest that chronic administration of opioids may be associated with significant weight gain, possibly by altering an organism’s perception of and preference for sweet foods. The primary aim of this laboratory study was to rigorously examine sucrose subjective response among adults receiving OAT and a comparison sample without OUD. As secondary outcomes, we also sought to compare the

Abstract:
The increase incidence of obesity and eating disorders represents a major health problem in developed countries. The low rate of success of treatments to prevent or reverse obesity, and overeating that causes it, highlights the important behavioural alterations that are associated to this disease. These alterations seem to be mediated by modifications in the reward circuits that mimic changes occurring during addictive behaviour. Moreover, like drugs of abuse, obesity is associated with abnormal intake habits when maintaining diet that can endure vulnerability to relapse. In the present thesis

Abstract:
Numerous studies in rodent models have shown that the offspring of dams fed a high-fat high-sugar (cafeteria) diet throughout pregnancy and lactation develop a specific preference for the same kinds of foods in adulthood. Furthermore, studies into potential mechanisms have revealed that the offspring of cafeteria diet fed dams also have altered expression of key components of the mesolimbic reward pathway including the mu-opioid receptor. The current work used a rodent model to look specifically at the role of the mu-opioid receptor in the programming of food preferences and investigated when

Abstract:
Opioids such as morphine and codeine are the most commonly clinically used drugs for pain management, but have associated side-effects. Food-derived opioid peptides can be suitable alternative due to less side-effect and are relatively inexpensive to produce. So, wheat protein (gluten) was tested as source for production of opioid peptides. The thesis reports results of investigations carried out on production of opioid peptides from wheat gluten using enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation by selected lactic acid bacteria and characterisation of bioactivity (opioid) of prepared peptides
