The results of the Cheung-Ng procedure show that variation in oil prices does not Granger cause the variance in food and agricultural raw material prices. We use a dynamic specific-factors model in order to analyze how factor incomes, i.e. wages, interest rate and land rent, change when food prices rise. Special attention is given to the effects of food price shocks on wages. In the context of the theory, a food price shock affects factor incomes through labor and capital markets. The magnitude of the effect of a price shock is defined by labor shares of the productive sectors, saving allocation, elasticity of substitution in the agricultural sector and factor intensities. Food prices have increased rapidly in recent years, and so has ethanol consumption. Some studies have claimed that there is a connection between those two. Net exporters of food tend to benefit from higher prices, while regions that are net importers of food, tend to be adversely affected. The large amount of poor countries in the second group justifies an investigation of the causes of increasing food prices. This thesis aims to contribute to the discussion, analyzing, theoretically and empirically, the impact that the diversion of feedstock from food to ethanol production has on food prices.

There is a growing body of evidence that Canadian consumers have concerns about the impact of agricultural production on the health of the environment and on society. This study investigates the preferences of rural and urban consumers in Quebec for food attributes that provide environmental, health, and social benefits. The choice modeling technique was employed to estimate the implicit prices of specific food attributes and willingness to pay (WTP) values for alternative food products. Results suggest t
