Abstract: The client satisfaction and the understanding of their needs and desires has been the object of studies conducted in various scientific areas. Thus, new methodologies are necessary. The Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is one of such methodologies; is a recent tool and it's applicability has been gaining strength in the contemporary market with continuous improvements and applications in various fields, with emphasis in service areas. The number of people eating out in commercial food service outlets is rising, due to various reasons: distance from home, difficulties in transportation and lack of time for meals. Currently, Unicamp houses 3 universitary restaurants (URs) and 24 Cafeterias (private food establishments), at Campinas campus, to serve 50,000 people. The current work aims to offer subsidies to contribute towards the improvement of Unicamp food services through definition of Quality Characteristics (QC) from the QFD Quality Matrix for an "ideal" service, according to the client's perception. The 3 URs and 21 cafeterias were evaluated by 1,083 respondents. All respondents were URs and cafeteria clients and their profiles were also characterized. The sampling and data analysis were corroborated by statistical and market research techniques. The QFD method steps were developed with additional procedures for the QCs evaluations. Two different Quality Matrix were built: URs and Cafeterias. For the Planned Quality of the URs, from nine Demanded Qualities (DQs) raised at qualitative step, Location quality, Food quality, Balanced meal, Novelty and Offer of meals were prioritized. These show client concerns and expectations, especially from the students, who represent the largest public in terms of absolute numbers, with relation to health, pleasant ambient and socialization opportunity. For the cafeterias DQs were ordered as follows: Novelty, Service, Food quality, Location quality, Price and Proximity. This demonstrates that the clients are more concerned with aspects related to desire satisfaction, mainly in terms of meal novelties. During the extraction process, 42 Quality Characteristics (QCs) were defined. In Projected Quality the QCs Technical assistance and Training time were defined as the most relevant and deserve greater establishment efforts in order to enhance the services. Thus, other QCs highly related to these will also be improved. The technical teams with the specific profiles demanded by each step was important for the work evolution. In the Projected Quality step, an Auxiliary Table was developed for the consolidation of the Target Values and QC Prioritization. Thus, additional procedures on Quality Matrix construction contributed for the work development and may be useful for similar studies. The QFD methodology was shown to be efficient to evaluate the food service in an university campus. The results showed to the most relevant CQs and those that may and should be used to enhance the quality of the food service establishments at Unicamp
Doutorado
Tecnologia Pós-Colheita
Doutor em Engenharia Agrícola

Abstract:
Modern logistics chains are becoming more complex and extensive. The mission of supply chains is to manage physical and information flows to ensure that products are delivered in the right quantities, in the right place and in a cost-effective way. The shift towards lighter and more global logistics networks in addition to external economic, social and political constraints and pressures are factors that increase the vulnerability of supply chains. To guard against this, supply chains should develop resilience capabilities in order to increase their resilience and recovery capabilities after each disruption. Resilience is the ability of the supply chain to act and compensate for the severity of vulnerabilities. However, the increase in resilience implies significant investment costs, which from a certain level could lead to erosion of its profits. The problem is how to find a compromise between improving resilience and minimizing investment costs. In this thesis, we seek to propose an adequate methodology for the improvement of resilience while taking into account the requirements in terms of efficiency. The aim of this thesis is firstly to help decision-makers become aware of the vulnerability factors that put the normal functioning of their supply chain at risk and secondly to find the best strategy in terms of efficiency and resiliency for supply chain vulnerability mitigation. In this aim, we propose a conceptual model based on a combined qualitative and quantitative approach. The proposed model is split into two main phases. The first phase deal with the identification and analysis of vulnerability in the supply chain. To this end, we provide a tool for the diagnosis of vulnerability factors and a decision support tool and an analysis method for evaluation. The second phase considers the evaluation and the optimization of resilience, according to its two measures, resistance and recovery, for choosing an efficient portfolio of resilience capabilities. To this end, we develop an optimization model based on the Goal Programming method weighted with satisfactions functions. Experimentation of our conceptual model is carried out on the real case study of an agrifood supply chain for animal feed

Abstract:
In this thesis, Quality Function Deployment for aircraft maintenance organizations is considered. Assessment and evaluation of quality management in aircraft maintenance organizations is the key to ensure safety, reliability, and the assurance of quality. At present, companies around the world have an absolute need for quality management systems in order to help them to develop and manage better their activities. Improving the way in which organizations handle their organizational management plays a major role in raising the standard of the quality of the product or the quality of the service they deliver. The challenge of implementing quality approaches in the management of aircraft maintenance organizations is appealing since it is recognized to save time and money. As a result, the organization can become more efficient, more competitive in its domain and finally more profitable. Quality management is, therefore, an essential function for maintaining and improving the quality of the services and products provided by aircraft maintenance organizations. First necessary background and theoretical knowledge on aircraft maintenance organizations and quality management is presented in detail. This is achieved by performing an analysis of the needs and the means for improving quality in the maintenance activities. The proposed analysis approach is a combination of Quality Function Deployment, and Fuzzy Logic theory. The Quality Function Deployment is used as an analysis tool to translate the customer needs and requirements into service features. The Quality Function Deployment involves the construction of a matrix structure which allows the assessment and ranking of different course of action with respect to quality. Since many opinions from experts are expressed in linguistic terms it appeared that fuzzy logic could improve this analysis process. Then, the final part of the thesis is devoted to the development of a fuzzy quality function deployment. The proposed analysis approach is then illustrated in the case of aircraft maintenance organizations where the objective is to increase fleet availability, maintain aircraft reliability, decrease servicing time, and limit investment costs

Abstract:
Each year, millions of people flee their homes due to political conflicts, fearing the risk of being persecuted. As well, mounting environmental issues engenders an increasing stream of people-displacement. Humanitarian organisations have for decades acted in order to help people of concern in refugee situations. For them, it is vital to be able to provide quick relief and must therefore be mobilized via suppliers and distribution channels with needed goods for humanitarian care in case of an emergency. Gustav Innovation in collaboration with the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (KTH) and the authors of this document, is developing a field cooking stove called FirePipe which is both quick and easy to distribute, as well as sustainable financially, environmentally and humanitarily in provisional settlesments. The following document treats the development of a Quality Function Deployment (QFD) evaluating the most important characteristics of such a stove in order to create an as succesful product as possible. It also contains a competitive analysis to illuminate FirePipe’s strengths and weaknessess in relation to similar products. According to the QFD analysis the most important Quality Characteristic to focus on in future engineering work is the reduction of the fuel mass consumption of FirePipe. Other important paramterers are the ability to save time using FirePipe as well as reducing harmful emissions. If the target values for these features can be met, FirePipe will be a qualitatively consistent alternative to the existing market that particularly will deliver great opportunities for easy cost-effective logistics.

Bolar, Aman Ahmed. "A Quality Function Deployment (QFD) Approach for Bridge Maintenance Management." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/48548.

Full text
Abstract:
Infrastructure age in the US/Canada are beyond half their expected service life. With billions of dollars invested annually, an increase in number of decisions towards maintenance, rehabilitation and replacement (MRR) activities are expected. Customer (infrastructure user) opinions are sometimes sought when major infrastructure-related decisions are made by conducting surveys, community meetings, etc. However, with consumers becoming more involved in economic, environmental, and social issues related to infrastructure, a process for ensuring customer demands are addressed would be valuable to all stakeholders involved. In this thesis, using bridge as an example, an innovative expert-based decision-framework has been proposed and developed using the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) approach. The framework comprises of three major elements. First a hierarchical evidential reasoning (HER) framework is proposed and developed for condition assessment of bridges by classifying bridge elements into Primary, Secondary, Tertiary and Life Safety-Critical elements. Respective indices are calculated in addition to an overall bridge condition index. The HER framework enables combining different distress indicators and propagating both aleatory/epistemic uncertainties using either Dempster-Shafer or Yager's rule. Importance and reliability factors (collectively termed "credibility factor") are introduced based on bridge element importance and reliability of collected data. Second, QFD implementation has been demonstrated with the following applications: (i) Inspection Prioritization (ii) Decision-Making between Replacement and/ or Rehabilitation scenarios. For inspection prioritization, an Inspection House of Quality is prepared for translating consumer demands (WHATs) into inspection requirements (HOWs) and demonstrated using data developed from Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) inspection manual. For the decision-making scenarios, a case study is furnished for a bridge located in Victoria, BC. Finally, the infrastructure-user's expectations are dynamic given the changing economic conditions, technologies, environmental regulations, etc. A hidden Markov model (HMM) is utilized for predicting such dynamic customer response by using probabilities of focus areas that are of interest to the infrastructure-user as hidden parameters. Using the 2005 California Transportation's customer survey, a case study is presented for demonstrating the application. This new expert-based framework has an ability to enhance decision-making by addressing uncertainty in collected inspection data, facilitating customer input into MRR procedures and by predicting customer expectations.
Applied Science, Faculty of
Engineering, School of (Okanagan)
Graduate

Abstract:
103
Recently, the health care food industry has gain tremendous attention due to the improvement of economy as well as the pursuit for better life quality. Besides building physical or digital stores, the most effective way to boost the sales is to implement efficient managing strategies. This study adopted the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to effectively integrate consumers’ demand, product design and manufacturing information and to build the right product or service design capability. Quality Function Deployment can be achieved through the use of HOQ. It transforms the Voice of Customer (VOC) into product service strategy or scope and coordinates all the work through inter-department collaboration using consumer’s demand as a common language. This study uses quality deployment that considers consumers’ service quality and demand to provide business strategies for the health care food companies. By defining the market with the most potential and benefits, the investment put in will be more effective. With this, the companies can create products that match consumers’ demand. The expected results in this study were obtained from survey questionares and analysis. They are used to confirm consumers’ demand and the business strategies of health care food companies. The quality function depolyment developed by using the relationships between business strategies and consumers’ demand can be used to perform market segmentation effectively, which sorts out the priority for different business strategies. Based on the sorted results as well as the targeted market, companies can further plan out their differentiated business strategies, which helps them to promote products to different customers with various occupations, sex and age. This not only will make the health care food companies more competitive, but also improve the sales of real or virtual reality stores.

Along the expertized and certificated environment, as well as the food safety issue, what type of professional knowledge and skill that bakers need to have to make consumers to be confident of their products? There’re not only bakers who need to have professional knowledge, the general public may hope to have professional knowledge and skills certification; therefore, there’re many organizations or institutions that provide the education training program for the baking certification. However, most of these education training are only passing their experiences or related trainings, so their teaching materials or designs may lack of scientific and systematic design. As a result, this study introduced Quality Function Deployment (hereinafter refer to as QFD) and linear conversion to convert baking leaners’ needs to be the teaching design contents. McDonalds is the largest chain organization in fast food field, also, they have multiple choices of discount meal sales, and therefore McDonald's becomes the new choices for those office workers. My purpose of this study is to propose several effective improvements in service quality field over the Taipei area McDonalds. However, the out-eater have been increasing from the office workers market in Taiwan every year, they have short break on common. They look for more quickly and efficiently dining environments, in order to reduce the unnecessary time in waiting, McDonald become their new choice in dine, especially in special discount period (such as lunch special period 11a.m.-2p.m.). We use the Quality Function Deployment to analyze, to process the empirical analysis, in order to make sure the service quality to meet the customers' voices in Taipei area McDonald. We combined the Importance-Satisfaction Model with Kano Model, be able to have a clear vision of classification of McDonald elements in Taipei area, and also plus the Quality of House, which to calculate the percentage in the weights of the customer needs, and finally to improve the demand for quality objects by using the Four-quadrant Diagram. The results of final study show that the sort of the most important quality elements, the five objects in the front roll would be, the staff professional competence , staff workstations training, the environment and the hardware device, variety of complaints pipeline, and also, the speed of information announcement updates. Abstract:
82
Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is an organizational approach used to guide R&D, manufacturing, and marketing toward the development of products and services that satisfy the needs of the consumer. The QFD operations are performed by way of a diagram called the House of Quality (HOQ). The HOQ contains information about the customers'''''''' needs (what), mechanisms to address these needs (how), and the criterion for deciding which "how" provides the greatest customer satisfaction. A less familiar application of QFD is the implementation of the approach for the improvement of retail services. The objective of this research is to build a prototype retail QFD application. The prototype provides an HOQ architecture for analyzing the customers'''''''' needs and specifying the improvements. Two evaluation algorithms are proposed to assistant the manager in making decision. To better integrate QFD into the Management Information Systems (MIS) environment, interactive software is developed using the object oriented programming (OOP) representation scheme. The software provides an integrated workbench for building retail HOQs and designing retail service strategies.

The Quality Function Deployment methodology is totally directed to the client instead of the product, wherein the effort from all the involved departments allows the match between the goals and the offered product. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the actions that aim at satisfying those goals. These actions must be measurable, in order to provide analysis and optimization opportunities. Afterwards, the prioritization of these actions is carried out so that they are performed in the most efficient way. Throughout the thesis, the authors introduce the origin of the methodology, its structure and operation, an existing normalization and prioritization algorithm and the most common problems when using the QFD. A new simple, flexible and quantitative model is proposed, which includes: A strategic planning of organization that proposes the minimization of possible incompatibilities that may arise between its capabilities and customer requirements. Business variables at the different stages of the design in order to calculate with greater precision the value resulting from the prioritization and to allow nullity or uniformity of the relative importance of customer requirements. The qualitative fulfillment of the correlations of the QFD methodology is replaced by a quantitative aspect that aims to minimize the filling of errors and interpretation when using the methodology. The results from this model are analyzed and presented using a tool programmed in PHP.

91
It is suggested that a growing need for long-term health care is a result of the society changes, such as diseases evolutions and changes in family structure as well as the increased probability of the mental and physical frailties and needs of extended care services due to the population aged. Given that the major customers of long-term care services are the elders, serious disability and vulnerable groups, attentions to the care quality have been drawn, which on the other hand, plays a key role for the assessment of long-term care policy and management within the nursing home. It is therefore, understood that the quality of long-term health care becomes an important issue in Taiwan. In consideration of our intention and the research purpose, the self administration questionnaire - Residents’ Perceptions of Service Quality and Importance Evaluation within a Nursing Home - designed based on the focus group, literature review and related experts’ suggestions is applied to our investigation. The questions are about five service quality dimensions provided by a nursing home - medical care, facilities and environment, administrative support, staff attitudes and other services as well as forty-five residents’ demanded quality elements. Eighty-five participants in this study came from the family members of current residents at Nursing Home of Taichung Hospital, and Quality Functions Deployment (QFD) was used to analyze the collected data. First of all, the research found the gaps in expectations and perceptions within the demanded quality elements. The positive gap scores indicating that perceptions exceeded expectations were found within 29 elements while the negative gap scores indicating that perceptions fell short of expectations were within 16 demanded qualities, which underlines that an extra effort on demanded qualities improvement is required. Meanwhile, according to the importance evaluation, five high on the priority list of demanded quality elements are reasonable charge, physician’s response to resident’s needs, foods standard, physician’s professional competence, and meals provided at appointment time. Finally, the importance evaluation of demanded qualities versus nursing home’s service quality dimensions presents that eight elements - physicians/staff professional competence, health care efficiency, manpower, continuing staff education/training, cost management, in-time health care service, crisis handling, foods conditions were valued more than 5% while two departments — medical staff and administrative departments were found being valued over 5% within the importance evaluation of nursing home’s service quality dimensions versus departments needed to be strengthened. This study is intended to address the residents’ needs within a nursing home through an exploratory analysis with an attempt to understand better the need and decision elements utilized by nursing home residents and their families, which serves as a tool to assist the nursing home to build and promote a program based on the findings and suggestions presented in this paper to improve the quality of long-term care service.

Abstract:
95
Base on the “Public building construction notes” by the Public Construction Commission, in the phase of design level about healthcare building. It points out some faults: bad communications, unclear survey, insufficient storage space, in house contamination and lack of considerations of heavy equipment moving path. They cause the delay in the design phase, unnecessary design changes and construction interfaces problems. To preventing all these faults from happening, this research use surveys, specialists’ interviews, and Informative collection; to establish the Healthcare construction program and check list to insure the quality function, and the integrity of customer’s needs from the beginning. To insure the information are passing through the process. Through the design is not the most costly and labor intensity stage in the construction. But, it has the most effective influence to the whole project. Thus, in the programming phase to execute Quality Function Deployment can insure the best design result, cut down budget, and reduce the design time frame. By through the Healthcare construction programming, this research is conducting a throughal process standard to promote the design quality, confirmation of each stage to make sure the result meet the custom’s requirements. And, cut down the cost and construction time.

Abstract:
102
Quality function deployment (QFD) is a effective method to respond customers' requirement on product design. Nowadays, quality function deployment has been utilized in several fields, such as, production management, customer service, and new product design etc. However, the cost of techniques is not taken into account in the previous research. Hence, in order to meet customers' requirement, the cost may be over the expectation. A cost-effective quality function deployment is proposed in this study to satisfy customers with the minimum cost. Based on the concepts of quality function deployment and value stream analysis tools, the marginal cost-benefit is considered in this study, and improves the performance of quality function deployment effectively. Furthermore, cost-effective quality function deployment models with cost limit are also discussed in this study. The results shows that taking cost and marginal benefit into account can improve the performance of quality function deployment effectively

Abstract:
101
With the advance and innovation of technology, product life-cycles have progressively grown shorter. Therefore, firms need to quickly determine customer requirements during product development. Quality function deployment (QFD) is a product development process which maximizes customer satisfaction. The first phase of QFD, usually called house of quality (HOQ), translates the voice of customer (VoC) into engineering characteristics. The first step of HOQ is to identify customers’ needs and their relative ranking of those needs. Most of the existing literature uses point scales or linguistic variables to describe customer opinions, and transforms linguistic variables into fuzzy numbers. In addition to customer needs, firms also need to consider their competitors and their own limitations. In order to increase the accuracy of customers’ requirements, this research mainly uses intuitionistic fuzzy numbers to describe customer opinions, denoting uncertainty by membership, non-membership and information regarding hesitancy of intuitionistic fuzzy numbers. This research uses intuitionistic fuzzy numbers to deal with the uncertainty of customer requirements, and the proposed model consists of three steps: (1) using the group decision method to collect and aggregate experts’ linguistic opinions (2) implementing competitive analysis as well as converting the corresponding customer requirements into design requirements in order to assist firms in understanding the competitive market, avoiding the correlation among design requirements and getting more accurate design requirements (3)using multi-objective programming to determine the fulfillment level of each design requirement based upon resource limitations and technical difficulties .Finally, we use a practical example to demonstrate the rationality and superiority of the proposed model by comparing it to the method used in Chan and Wu(2005).

100
This study uses Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to probe into the gap between the needs of customers and technology in international luxury brands for investigating the degrees of customers’ satisfaction and emphasis. Moreover, the priority of improvement is revealed by utilizing the index of differences. There are many researches of service quality; however, the study of the service quality of luxury brands is quite few. The purpose of this paper utilizes Quality Function Deployment to explore the operation of the service quality of luxury brands. The five dimensions are derived by using factor analysis which focusing the income of the customers’ needs. The dimensions and the attributes of service are injected into Quality Function Deployment, and the customers’ needs are further turned into the needs of managers’ quality technology in luxury brands. Eventually, House of Quality is adopted to advance the priority of alternatives for the service quality of luxury brands.

Abstract:
89
The government declares that all public agencies, except special service units, will implement a five-working-day program starting this year (2001). Therefore, people can have more leisure time to enjoy outdoor activities and all sorts of tourist attractions in their two-day weekends, including museums. However, these museums become crowded with visitors and their related facilities are not enough to cope with increase in visitors. This leads to a deterioration of their quality of service. Facing this situation, the National Palace Museum, famous for its rich collections and influential in the international community of museums, has to made efforts to make exhibitions more accessible to the general public and make its service quality consistent with international standards. This survey, focused on the National Palace Museum, adopts the approach of “Quality Function Deployment” to systematically research overall service operation in terms of quality and technical aspects. First, visitors to the Museum were interviewed. The framework of the survey is based on the PZB service quality model, interviews with experts, and written visitor opinions (from 1 July 2000 to 31 December 2000, a total of 3713 copies of written opinions). 414 copies of effective opinions (“invalid opinions” indicate the opinions which are not complete) have been singled out and analyzed in order to design the items of questionnaires. Moreover, a survey was conducted by using questionnaires to poll visitors in the Museum. The results of this survey were analyzed by the approach of factor analysis and accordingly established the evaluation model for service quality of the National Palace Museum in the following categories: “dependability and reliability”, “professionalism and education”, “ the surrounding environment” and “quality of exhibition halls”. Through these categories and by employing the approach of “Quality Function Deployment”, visitors’ demands on the service quality in the Museum will be transformed to requirements on technical aspects of quality. The final analysis reveals that the following ten items of service quality need to be improved: “service in the exhibition hall”, “on-the-job training and education”, “logistical management”, “evaluation of employees”, “management of volunteers”, “response to visitors’ opinions”, “providing service facilities in surrounding environment”, “security”, “management of human resources”, “publicizing and marketing of exhibitions”. This survey will provide reference to practice operation units employed to improve and manage their service quality.
