This paper develops the theory of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the food industry. The effects of CSR on the food industry are captured. First, we argue that CSR reduces the profits of a CSR firm under monopoly. Second, under complete information, regulation does not improve social welfare. We find that both active price regulation and active quality regulation reduce a monopolist’s profits, consumer surplus and social welfare. Finally, under incomplete information, the monopolist exaggerates quality as much as possible. With quality regulation, CSR reduces exaggerated quality in th

The food safety is here understood as the complex of precautions concerning the plant health protection, veterinary problems, animal health protection and animal welfare, concerning the foodstuffs and feeds. Realization of these precautions leads to the safety of all the parts of the food chain and the final foodstuff. Health, good living level and the protection of economic and social interests of people are the basic attributes for the evaluation of the role of foodstuff. That

The focus is justified by a pragmatic consideration, inspired by the Institutional Analysis and Development framework (IAD: Ostrom 2005, 2011): although policy effectiveness more directly depends on a wide array of noninstitutional factors, the institutional dimension of governance is the one on which intervention is relatively easier, and that shapes actors’ strategies and endowments. Abstract:
Following the announcement by the FSA that from 31st March 2021, all CBD products on the market must have their safety assured by companies submitting a valid safety application, there have been a large number of CBD-related novel food applications. Consequently, a significant level of additional data has become available that requires review. A joint Subgroup of the ACNFP and COT was formed to address a series of questions in relation to the safety of CBD-containing and hemp-derived ingredients. The overarching aim of the Subgroup is to enable the FSA to perform risk assessments for CBD in fo

Food safety is a pressing concern in both Nigeria and Ethiopia with estimates suggesting that 60% to 80% of illnesses in Ethiopia are caused by pathogens spread via the food supply(Temesgen, 2015) Traditional markets – or “informal” food marketplaces – have become critical to food security, nutrition, and livelihoods for millions of Ethiopians. However, with a lack of regulations, compliance, and training for vendors, food safety practices are often limited in aforementioned markets. We used behavioral science to empower consumers to demand for and prioritise safe, nutritious foods in informal

This report summarises the findings from qualitative research exploring public attitudes towards regulatory divergence related to food products. The research was conducted with 78 participants from England, Wales and Northern Ireland, who took part in four online workshops between 26 January and 7 February 2023. Each workshop lasted three hours. Previous research for the Food Standards Agency (FSA) captured general consumer views towards regulatory divergence in the meat industry. Attitudes were influenced by three key factors including the scale of the change, perceptions of whether an erosio

The Advisory Committee on Social Sciences (ACSS) was established by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to bring social science expertise to the Agency’s pursuit of food safety, food authenticity, and regulatory excellence. In fulfilling its remit, the Agency needs advice from a wide range of expertise, and this includes insights from disciplines such as behavioural science and economics as much as from the medical, agricultural, and animal health domains. It is crucial to understand how we as consumers, as well as the industries that feed us, might adapt our behaviours, perceive risks or alter ou

Abstract:
The current Food Standards Agency consumer guidance states that consumers can freeze pre-packed food right up to the “use-by” date and, once food has been defrosted, it should be consumed within 24 hours. This strategic review has collated relevant data to determine whether there is an increased risk in relation to freezing ready-to-eat and non-ready-to-eat foods on the use-by date compared to the day before the use-by date. The review has focused on how the shelf-life of a food is determined and the effects of freezing, thawing and refrigeration on foodborne pathogens, including Bacillus spp.
