Risk-based food inspection manual for the Caribbean. Organización Panamericana de la Salud, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.37774/9789275121238.

Full text
Abstract:
[Introduction] This manual contains guidance for risk-based inspections of food processing, preparation, retail and restaurants that countries can consult and adapt/adopt in developing a risk-based food business inspection program for their specific context. It is intended to help countries implement risk-based inspection systems that are consistent with international standards. This document builds on the FAO Risk Based Food Inspection manual (2008) and draws on the more recent guidance developed for governments by Codex Alimentarius, in particular, the Principles and Guidelines for National Food Control Systems (CAC/GL 82-2013) and the General Principles of Food Hygiene (CAC/RCP 1-1969). Make It Safe. CSIRO Publishing, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643100237.

Abstract:
All people involved with preparation of food for the commercial or retail market need a sound understanding of the food safety risks associated with their specific products and, importantly, how to control these risks. Failure to control food safety hazards can have devastating consequences for not only the consumer, but also the food manufacturer.
Make It Safe provides practical guidance on how to control food safety hazards, with a specific focus on controls suitable for small-scale businesses to implement.
Small businesses make up around two-thirds of businesses in Australia’s food and beverage manufacturing industry. This book is aimed at those small-scale businesses already in or considering entering food manufacture. Those already operating a small business will develop a better understanding of key food safety systems, while those who are in the ‘start-up’ phase will gain knowledge essential to provide their business with a solid food safety foundation while also learning about Australian food regulations relevant to food safety. The content will also be useful for students studying food technology or hospitality who wish to seek employment in the manufacturing industry or are planning on establishing their own manufacturing operation.
Illustrated in full colour throughout, Make It Safe outlines the major food safety hazards – microbial, chemical and physical – which must be controlled when manufacturing all types of food products. The control of microbial hazards is given special emphasis as this is the greatest challenge to food manufacturers. Topics covered include: premises, equipment, staff, product recipes, raw ingredients, preparation, processing, packaging, shelf-life, labelling and food recalls. Key messages are highlighted at the end of each chapter.

Abstract:
Systems of producing, consuming, and distributing water, energy, and food involve trade-offs that are rarely explicitly considered by firms and policymakers. The idea of the water-energy-food “nexus” represents an attempt to formalize these trade-offs into decision-making processes. Multinational food and beverage firms operating in arid regions were early promoters of nexus approaches, followed by aid donors, consultancies, and international institutions seeking a new paradigm for resource management and development planning. The first generation of nexus research focused on quantitative input-output modeling to empirically demonstrate interdependencies and options for optimizing resource management. This chapter employs a different approach, analyzing institutional “problemsheds” that shape the implementation of nexus initiatives in arid regions of the United States, the Persian/Arabian Gulf, and China. Our analysis reveals how nexus approaches are conditioned by property rights regimes, economic growth strategies based on resource extraction, and the ability to externalize environmental costs to other regions and states.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter provides a broad definition of surveillance in relation to health protection, including infections, environmental hazards, and health delivery. Surveillance systems include active, passive, and sentinel surveillance, and guidelines are provided for assessing the quality of surveillance data. Surveillance tools include the statutory notification of diseases, laboratory reporting, and prevalence surveys. In addition, syndromic surveillance, the (near) real-time collection of data has become increasingly used, facilitated by increasing use of digital data collection within health care settings and the availability of other digital data sources (e.g. social media). Other surveillance types include event-based surveillance (e.g. during major sporting events), and environmental surveillance, including food related disease, air pollution and chemical hazards. The chapter finally brings these together in integrated surveillance and the use of such surveillance in health planning and assessment.

Abstract:
Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) belong to a group of relapsing neurological syndromes characterized by significant morbidity and mortality due to central nervous system (CNS) inflammation and necrosis. Most patients are seropositive for pathogenic antibodies targeting Aquaporin-4, and while this water channel is mostly expressed on the foot processes of astrocytes, it is also expressed in placental tissues. On planning a pregnancy, patients should be well informed about the increased risk of preeclampsia and miscarriages, and that most medications used to treat NMOSD have potentially severe toxicities to the fetus. There is also increased risk of relapses in the postpartum period, and immunosuppressive agents are the mainstream method of preventing attacks.

Abstract:
East European futurists were part of the transnational networks of futures research. The Ford Foundation sent Daniel Bell on a study trip in 1960 during which he made contact with some of the key milieus of revisionist Marxist thought: the Polska 2000 group led by Andrej Sicinski as well as the group of sociologists under the leadership of Radovan Richta in Prague. After 1968, futurologists helped introduce forms of management and computer science into the planning systems of the socialist economies under the banner of prognostika. The chapter examines the way that East European futurists used the future as a way of constructing an argument about the need to revise Marxism, and how future research became a space of protest and dissidence.
