Abstract Every so often, such a profound change occurs in the way a competitive game (such as chess or basketball or football) is played that it constitutes not just an innovation but a fundamental transformation of the game. For example, John Wooden, the legendary UCLA basketball coach, whose teams won ten NCAA titles, transformed the game of basketball by introducing a concept called “the zone press.” The zone press was not just a tactic, but also a strategic vision of how the game ought to be played. Specifically, it consisted of an attacking defense. Instead of the offense having the initi
