Abstract:
The aims of this thesis were to investigate the substitute role in football and understand players' psychological responses to becoming a substitute player. This was achieved in three stages, firstly by completing a preliminary exploratory study uncovering experiences and emotions pertinent to substitute players and secondly by investigating factors from study 1 which appeared to be most important. Finally, a longitudinal intervention study was carried out to examine the effects of cognitive intervention strategies on negative emotional responses that were identified in studies 1 and 2. In study 1 semi-structured interviews were carried out with professional and semi-professional football players (17 males, 3 females) to develop a detailed understanding of the substitute experience and to establish if substitutes experienced elevated and debilitative competitive anxiety prior to performance. Results revealed that substitutes were exposed to various organisational stressors prior to performing (e.g., being inactive, experiencing a restricted warm up/physical preparation) and competitive stressors once substituted on to play (e.g., high paced game). Substitutes also reported experiencing negative mood, self-presentation concerns, reduced perceived control, elevated perceived threat, reduced coach communication and elevated competitive anxiety prior to competition. These results provided the basis for studies 2, 3 and 4. Study 2 investigated mood, self-presentation concerns and competitive state anxiety in substitute and starter players. Participants were 192 amateur and collegiate football players (34 males and 158 females) consisting of 96 starter and 96 substitute players. Participants completed questionnaires assessing mood (BRUMS: Terry Lane, Lane, & Keohane, 1999; 2003), self-presentation concerns (SPSQ: Wilson & Eklund, 1998) and competitive anxiety (Modified CSAI-2: Martens, Vealey & Burton, 1990a) 1 hour prior to competition. Results revealed that substitutes experienced significantly more anger, depression, concerns about physical appearance and interpreted self-confidence as being significantly more facilitative than starter players. Thus, indicating that substitute and starter players experience different mood state and self-confidence profiles but not self-presentation concerns or competitive anxiety before competition. Study 3 investigated the impact that playing status had on the coach-substitute relationship. Two coach-substitute dyads were investigated from a male semi-professional team (1 male coach, and 2 male substitute players), and two coach-substitute dyads were investigated from a female amateur team (1 female coach and 2 female substitute players). Results confirmed findings from study 1 that coaches and substitutes experienced reduced shared interaction and communication. In addition, coaches and substitute players shared thoughts and behaviours that characterise a negative coach-athlete relationship. Specifically there was evidence to support reduced closeness, reduced shared understanding, reduced commitment and negative behaviours between coaches and substitutes. Finally, study 4 consisted of a longitudinal design using time series analysis to examine the effects of three cognitive intervention strategies (goal setting, self-talk and pre-performance routines) on mood, self-presentation and competitive anxiety in substitute players. Participants were four female football players who completed the BRUMS, SPSQ and Modified CSAI-2 questionnaires each time they were a substitute player both before and after the intervention period. Results showed that substitutes experienced more positive thoughts and a general improving trend for anxiety (CSAI-2), mood (BRUMS) and self-presentation concerns (SPSQ) following the intervention period. In conclusion, results from this thesis indicate that becoming a substitute player can be stressful, resulting in negative thoughts, emotions, and behaviours as well as a debilitative coach-substitute relationship. However, more research is needed to explore this phenomenon further.

Piggott, David James Stirling. "Young people's experience of football : a grounded theory." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2008. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/8147.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to generate a substantive grounded theory to explain a variety of young people's experiences of football within and external to FA Charter Standard Clubs and Schools. A modified grounded theory methodology (Strauss and Corbin, 1998; Charmaz, 2000) was selected following an ethical commitment to 'listen to young people's voices'. This methodology was underpinned by critical realist ontological assumptions (Sayer, 2000) and reformulated according to Popperian epistemology (Popper, 1972; 1981). Ten mini-ethnographies were conducted in football clubs and schools in England over a period of 12 months. Data were generated through focussed group interviews with young people (aged 8-18), and participant observation captured in field notes. Over three increasingly deductive iterations (or 'vintages') of data collection and analysis, a substantive theory of socialisation processes in youth football was created. This abstract theory hypothesised that young people's experiences may be conceptualised as partially individualised responses to external influences, expressed as desires and concerns that may act reciprocally on the social context. More specific hypotheses (or models) were formulated and 'mapped over' the abstract theory. The relationship between stress, enjoyment and learning in youth football is explored in the first of these models, focussing specifically on the role of significant adults. Coach behaviour and its impact on the youth football environment is the subject of the second model, which describes an 'ideal type' football programme. Female experiences are the subject of the third section of the discussion which focuses on 'first contact' with football (particularly male domination in mixed football) and subsequent socialisation experiences. Here it is conjectured that the development of friendships and identity specific to football may increase the propensity to participate. The final model conceptualises socialisation processes for young players from black and minority ethnic communities. The problems of 'culture barriers' and institutional racism are explored before considering the role youth football might play in the wider 'integration debate'. Finally, some recommendations for policy change and for future research are offered. Here it is suggested that policy changes are monitored and evaluated with critical sociological studies focussing on young people's experiences of coaching and parenting and hegemonic power relations in female and multicultural football respectively.

Ratna, Aarti. "British Asian females' racialised and gendered experiences of identity and women's football." Thesis, University of Brighton, 2008. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.491098.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides a detailed analysis of British Asian females' expenences of playing women's football in England. Even though a growing number of British Asian girls and women are known to be playing the game in recent years, they have not generally been valued and/or accepted members of the field. Arguably, their positioning(s) as insiders/outsiders in relation to women's football is tenuous and involves different levels of belonging and non-belonging. This is an under-researched area of study and therefore I use ethnographic research methods - particularly interviews and participant observation - to prioritise the voices and experiences of British Asian female footballers. In this way I give the research participants the power to speak about their experiences in a way that makes sense to them as 'players' of the game. The research specifically examines how the subjective experiences of British Asian female football players is shaped by the material conditions of their lives, and also engages with how they actively respond to such forces. Acknowledging the heterogeneity of British Asian football players and illustrating both similarities and differences in terms of their everyday experiences have been central to the research processes. The findings of this study show how these females - in relation to their personal circumstances - carve out a sense of belonging for themselves through on-going forms of negotiation. Commonalities in their experiences signify the pervasiveness of gender, 'race'/ ethnicity, nation and class as well as other ideas about family, generation, style and consumption which construct , new articulations of 'femaleness' and 'Asianness'. Identities are becoming increasingly hybrid resulting in a wide array of experiences and positioning(s) which are not clear-cut or easy to decipher but are nuanced and complex. Engaging with the vicissitudes of British Asian females' football experiences this account provides a timely contribution to the sociology of sport as well as to the fields of gender, ethnic and racial studies.

Hayward, Eric H. "No Free Kicks : The Experiences of an Aboriginal Family in Australian Rules Football." Curtin University of Technology, Centre for Aboriginal Studies, 2002. http://espace.library.curtin.edu.au:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=13910.

Abstract:
Aboriginal people make a great contribution to Australian sport in conditions of considerable adversity, and yet their contribution goes largely unacknowledged. This study investigates the experiences of one Aboriginal family with an extensive history of involvement with Australian Rules Football using methodologies which seek, and value, Aboriginal perspectives on their involvement. It privileges Indigenous knowledge. The study focuses particularly on the involvement of the Hayward family in Australian Rules Football - the game they love - and in which they have been intensely involved for many generations. The study describes how the Haywards of southwest Western Australia, like most Aboriginal families, experienced an extensive period of colonisation in which their social and cultural autonomy and power were eroded. The historical experience of Aboriginal Australians is vastly different to that of mainstream Australians, and grossly inequitable, not only in terms of economic and educational opportunity, but also in terms of access to sporting opportunities. In many ways, the story of the Hayward family is representative of the experiences of many Black sportsmen and women over the past hundred years. It is suggested that, in order to understand Aboriginal participation and foster the development of Aboriginal sportspeople of all ages, an understanding of the context of their lives is crucial. This study then, explores my extended family's experiences as participants in mainstream sport. It describes how the Haywards, like their community contemporaries, have confronted the limited opportunities afforded to them in their ambitions to gain access, equity of participation, and appropriate reward for effort in their sporting endeavours.
Over many generations of Aboriginal participation in the game, there has been considerable inequality of opportunity to enter and participate. In their efforts to participate, members of the Hayward family faced many obstacles unacknowledged by non-Aboriginal players, administrators and spectators. The study shows that many of these obstacles had little to do with the sporting prowess of the Haywards. Every past and present player interviewed as part of this research told of circumstances where they felt that they had not been given a fair go - be it by an umpire, a team official, opposing players, players from their own team, or the crowd. For every case of acceptance of Aboriginal players by a football club, there are many stories of rejection by other clubs. Despite these obstacles, the study found that the Haywards (like many Aboriginal people) see sport (and particularly football) as significant in their lives. They love the game but, equally importantly, they believe that sporting prowess can open a path of entry to mainstream society, provide important economic advantages and offer opportunities for broader social participation while maintaining strong traditions of Aboriginal virtuosity and relationships. The study concludes by suggesting that, despite the adversities encountered by this family in their desire to participate in football, there has been much in the game that has brought pleasure, a sense of success, satisfaction and achievement to them. While this is the story of one family, I believe it provides important insights into experiences common to many Aboriginal families and sportspersons, and that this research deepens our understanding of Australian social history. Football has been, and continues to be, a valued part of the lives of many Aboriginal people.

Abstract:
Football is not a woman's game, it's not a pastime for milksops and sissies, it's a man's game" Trevor Ford, 1957. As the above quotation indicates football provides a site for the functioning of gender and sexuality. This thesis offers a detailed analysis of women's experiences of football, gender and sexuality. The research consists of 437 completed questionnaires and 14 in-depth semi-structured interviews. Over half the women taking part in the questionnaire research have played for over 15 years. Of the 14 women interviewed (aged between 20-43 yrs.), 11 started playing when they were girls (under 14 yrs.). The findings demonstrate that informal play and the spaces within playgrounds and housing estates are central to the women's initial involvement. 75% of the questionnaire participants commit between 4-6 hours a week to playing and for the women interviewed playing exists as a normalised and routinised aspect of their lives. That said, the findings expose the gender relations in football. The women have both shared and non-shared experience of the multi-layered policing of the football fields by the education system, officials, spectators, the media and through self-surveillance. The analysis illustrates how power is exercised and transmitted to discursively regulate gender and football. In addition through an exploration of football's sexual peremptory it is evident that hegemonic heterosexual relations to power are both reinforced and subverted. Lesbian presence and visibility inverts the sexual 'norm' and dykescapes represent, albeit transient, re-articulations of sexuality. Through an analysis of women's footballing bodies the research elucidates the inter-relationship between gender and sexuality. The findings indicate the regulatory practices that discipline .women's corporeality and the analysis considers the possibilities female masculinity offers for a re-materialisation of gender and the sexed body.

Abstract:
Paper one reviews the qualitative literature that focuses on services users' personal experiences of sports and exercise participation. Despite the small number of studies with some methodological limitations, this review provides an important insight into the personal experiences of sports and exercise for people with mental illness. A number of common themes are identified and discussed. Paper two offers a qualitative account of the 'Coping through Football' project, (a community based football project for people with enduring mental health problems), based on the experiences of various stakeholders. Semi-structured interviews with service users, football coaches and facilitators were analysed using a grounded theory approach. The following categories emerged from the data: Identifying with past self; Service with a difference; Opening up the social world; Safety; Empowerment and Feeling good. These categories were then conceptualised within an overall model according to whether they represented an aspect of structure, process or outcome. Findings are considered in relation to existing research and theory. Clinical relevance and methodological limitations are also discussed. Paper three provides a critical appraisal of the study, reflecting on the overall research process and considers the merits and limitations of the methodology used.

Abstract:
Moving away from home to embark on a career at an elite level involves the individual within a broader social ecology where a range of factors influence the dynamic transition. In 2000, Indigenous and non-Indigenous past and present AFL footballers and AFL administrative staff suggested that relocation was one of the issues faced by Indigenous AFL footballers. The focus of the current study was to learn about relocation and settlement experiences from the perspectives of 10 Indigenous Australian AFL footballers, examining the social, cultural, organisational, and psychological challenges. Five participants were drafted to the AFL within 12 months, and five participants were drafted to the AFL prior to 2002. Participants were listed players from seven Victorian AFL clubs. Interviews were also conducted with eight representatives (Indigenous and non-Indigenous) from organisations associated with the AFL. Players were asked questions about their own relocation and settlement experiences. Secondary informants were asked questions about their involvement with Indigenous players relocating and their perception of the relocation process for Indigenous players in the AFL. Interviews were semi-structured and conversational in style and analysed for unique and recurring themes using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Each of the stories reflected subtle differences experienced during relocation, highlighting the importance and value of using a phenomenological and qualitative framework to understand each player’s perspective and experiences of relocation. The findings demonstrated both facilitative and barrier factors influencing the relocation, settlement, and adaptation experiences. These included opportunity and social mobility, social support and kindredness, culture shock, and racism and homogeneity. Each player’s story about relocation and subsequent settlement and adaptation, highlighted the importance of family, connection, and kindredness as an overarching theme. The findings emphasise the need for receiving environments, in this case the AFL, to treat every player on an individual basis rather than grouping them into a collective. It is essential that a player is understood in relation to his socio-cultural context. The AFL has implemented significant changes to welcome cultural diversity, but as a mainstream organisation, it has been developed within mainstream values. Just as society in general needs to acknowledge Australian history and the overall discrepancies between Indigenous and non-Indigenous opportunities and living standards, the AFL has to continue to de-institutionalise stereotypes and increase the cultural awareness of all groups to continue being a forerunner of progressive race relations. The current study represents an important initial step in the identification and description of the relocation processes from the vantage point of Indigenous footballers.

Abstract:
This study investigated the academic and athletic experiences of African-American males in a Division I football bowl subdivision football program. Critical race theory, identity development model, and social learning model were the theoretical frameworks used as the critical lenses in a qualitative design to examine the participants. The participants’ responses were analyzed and interpreted using thematic analysis. A qualitative research design, which included individual interviews with 10 second year African-American male football players, was used to address this research problem. The goal was to bring together both the psychological and sociological perspectives and to challenge participants to candidly describe their academic and athletic experiences and attitudes toward obtaining an undergraduate degree. Four themes were determined in the data analysis: differential treatment and determining oneself, time management, relationships, and career aspirations. In relation to the theoretical frameworks, the development of self-confidence and knowledge of balancing their academic and athletic schedules was critical for all participants. The sense of feeling different and challenged because of the differences in culture and experience was evident. From this study, university and collegiate athletics administrators may better understand the backgrounds, challenges, and learning needs of this population. As a result, higher education personnel may improve the services they provide these young men in hopes of educating and developing whole persons—physically, emotionally, intellectually, socially, and spiritually—to become well-rounded and functional in contemporary society.

Velija, Philippa. "Women, cricket and gender relations : a sociological analysis of the experiences of female cricketers." Thesis, Brunel University, 2007. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5602.

Full text
Abstract:
The sociological study of women and sport, thus far, has focused primarily on females' involvement in football. This can be seen in a variety of sociological studies that have emphasised the persistence of unequal gender relations in the context of football. The purpose of this thesis aims to make a contribution to the literature by providing the first sociological analysis of females' involvement in cricket through a case study involving females' cricketers in a UK county. A figurational framework is adopted throughout the thesis to explore female cricketers' position as outsiders within the context of cricket, which has been predominantly a male preserve. It is suggested within the thesis that female cricketers are a heterogeneous outsider group with internal power relations that affect their outsiders' status. Gender relations as a type of unequal power relation are an integral, enduring part of female cricketers' experiences of the cricket figuration. Furthermore, the testimonies of contemporary female cricketers demonstrate that they remain 'outsiders' in the cricket figuration. That is to say, through a variety of processes, they remain on the margins of male cricket.

Abstract:
The social production and reproduction of traditional forms of masculinity has been associated with various sports including football. The purpose of this case study was to examine language as one particular feature of an all-male football environment. More specifically, the study focused on the narratives accompanying interactions on the football field, in the locker room, and at team social gatherings for one Canadian interuniversity football team, and examined the function of these narratives as well as their interpretation by the players. A triangulated methodology was used and information pertaining to the narratives was gathered through: (a) a content analysis of official documents including guidelines regarding the behavior and language of interuniversity football players; (b) a participant observation of the players' interactions and narratives; and (c) in-depth interviews with a sample of the players. Results of the study indicate that racist narratives are very rare, but that sexist, homophobic, violent and macho narratives are prevalent within this football subculture, as well as narratives related to pain and injury. The main functions or reasons identified for those narratives were: (a) conformity or peer pressure, (b) insecurity, (c) need to demonstrate superiority over teammates, opponents, and selected social groups, (d) male bonding and need to have a common language, (e) need to uphold the stereotypical tough "masculine" football image, and (f) isolation associated with an all-male environment. McBride, Maureen. "Rethinking sectarianism : a qualitative exploration of the meanings and experiences of football supporters in the West of Scotland." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2018. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/30995/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates how football supporters in the West of Scotland craft meaning from their everyday lives around questions of sectarianism, nationalism, and related social issues, through the lens of their football-supporting experience. The thesis seeks to ‘rethink’ sectarianism, challenging discourses which simplify or construct it as a historical phenomenon, by developing a deeper, empirically-informed understanding of its enduring impact on people’s lives. The thesis was written in the context of significant social and political change for Scotland. The fragmentation of traditional political structures and the ‘constitutional question’ have reopened key fault lines around religion and competing nationalisms, and these political shifts continue to have a profound effect on socio-cultural life and identities. New hierarchies of belonging and exclusion, built on previous ones, are emerging in contemporary Scotland, and the thesis contends that analysis of sectarianism must be analysed within this context. The thesis challenges dominant understandings of sectarianism, and the undertheorisation of the topic, by combining a qualitative approach, which is attentive to lived experiences and meaning-making, with historical-sociological analysis which is sensitive to structural and political factors.

Abstract:
Background: Soccer is the world´s biggest sport and is responsible for a lot of all the sports related injuries. These injuries can result in impaired health, expenses for the society and the end of a career. The main focus of today´s research regarding injury preventions are different types of training. There may also be other components that might reduce the risk of getting injured that hasn´t been explored as much.  Purpose: The aim was to investigate the perceptions and experiences of physiotherapists working for elite soccer clubs, regarding causes of injuries and important injury preventive methods. Method: A qualitative descriptive design was used in this study. Five semi structured interviews were performed and a qualitative content analysis was used. Result: Based on ”Causes of injuries”, five categories were identified; "Physical load", "Psychological and social pressure", "Type of trainer", "Game situation" and "Social situation". ”Injury prevention methods” generated six categories; "The team´s resources", "Planning Load", "Communication between the medical team, coaches and players", "Education of the medical team, coaches and players", "Finding balance in players' everyday life," and "How the players feel physically and psyochologically." Conclusion: Several aspects affect the occurrence of injuries, and therefore several components need to be taken into account in the prevention of these. Further studies are needed to cover additional areas and to draw conclusions about which of the possible components that should be prioritized.

Women’s football is one of the fastest growing sports around the world, however, equity is lacking as women have to negotiate for training equipment, financial sponsorship, media coverage and safe transportation. The study represents an investigation of the lived experiences of female footballers and administrators in the Western Cape: A critical perspective of gender equity. The study further assessed the lack of development and support for women involved in football which displays the inequalities experienced by females within the football arena. The proposed study investigated female footballers’ lived experiences with regard to gender equity in football in the Western Cape. The study used a phenomenological approach which focused specifically on the lived experiences of humans with regards to a particular phenomenon which in this study is gender equity.

Abstract:
Background: Football generates a large proportion of injuries and female football players are generally at higher risk of suffering certain injuries and have a different injury pattern than male players. Existing injury prevention programs have shown a reduced incidence of injuries. However, fewer studies have been done on female than male football players and studies regarding physiotherapist’s view of injury prevention in women’s teams are lacking. Purpose: The aim was to investigate the physiotherapist’s thoughts about, experiences of and role in injury prevention training in Swedish women’s football teams at the elite level. Method: A qualitative method with descriptive design was applied. The data collection was conducted with five semi-structured interviews and processed with qualitative content analysis. Results: The results showed that the physiotherapist’s believed that the causes of injuries are often due to shortage of staff, high total load and players well-being and life situation. The physiotherapist’s areas of responsibility include decisions, individual assessments, communication with those involved in the injury prevention work and designing the injury prevention training. Important factors that affect the injury prevention work are highlighted as the players own responsibility and financial resources in the team. The injury prevention work in women’s football teams can be developed through research, more resources and a changed way of working regarding injury prevention training. Conclusion: Causes of injuries, the physiotherapist’s areas of responsibility, interventions and limiting factors should be taken into account regarding injury prevention work in women’s football clubs. Furthermore, these factors need to be developed and given higher priority in the clubs in order to optimize the injury prevention work. More research is also needed regarding the subject to cover all the areas and to strengthen the physiotherapist’s role in injury prevention work.

Abstract:
The existence and influence of racism in Scottish society has largely been ignored, while claims that there is 'no racism here' have persisted. The social field of football has distinct properties but is not exempt from the processes and structures of wider social life. Racism has often been misrepresented as only existing in extreme forms. However, the subtle and complex expressions of contemporary racism are more prevalent, but receive far less recognition and criticism. This thesis is specifically concerned with the experiences of Scottish Asian ethnic minorities whose presence in elite football has been negligible. The racism which confronts this group is not independent of the racism faced by Irish-Scots and black people in Scotland. A further prejudice which interacts with these is anti-Englishness. Thus, not only does racism take various forms, but it has various targets. Analysing racism requires a sophisticated approach sensitive to the many forms which racism takes, and the different locations in which it is expressed. Furthermore, it requires awareness of the myths which have historically accompanied racist prejudice. The first section of this thesis addresses two specific myths: that South Asians do not play football; and that Scottish football is free of racism. The type of racism which emerged in both South Asian and Scottish football is detailed and analysed. The second section critically evaluates contemporary issues of Scottish Asian inclusion in football, and considers closely the types of subtle and implicit variants of racism which are evident in Scottish society. The third and final section offers a cultural description of Scottish Asian football culture, describing localised processes of resistance, while critically challenging essentialistic accounts of ethnicity. Football, in short, is a place where power is negotiated in Scottish society. Racism is prevalent in various guises, yet it is rarely acknowledged, and its more implicit guises require subtle and sustained analytical criticism.

Dunn, Caroline Stephanie. "The experience of female football fans in England : a qualitative study." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2012. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/20192/.

Full text
Abstract:
There is little, arguably insufficient literature in the mainstream (or 'malestream') domain of sports research focusing exclusively on female football supporters and looking at their reasons for their fandom as well as their particular experiences. This thesis, based on 100 questionnaire responses and 27 in-depth face-to-face interviews, explores respondents' narratives, analysis and perception of their own experience as a football supporter. It positions itself within a tradition of feminist standpoint research, defining the researcher interrogating the object of her own fandom as an 'aca/fan', and stressing the importance of self-reflexivity. Jennifer Hargreaves (1994: 1) refers to her own research as a 'political intervention' as she works to make women's sport a standard topic for sports sociology scholarship; my intent is to do the same for women's sports fandoms. The qualitative interviews have given rise to three key themes - the female fan's 'supporting career', her practices of fandom and the ways in which she negotiates her identity, and her experience of the importance of the supporters' trust movement. It also discusses the responses of clubs and football authorities to their female fans and their intentions (or failures) to market the sport to girls and women. Although every object of fandom and performance of fandom is different in both perception and practice, whether the individual is male or female, this thesis shows that there are some significant overlaps in experience and performance among people who share a particular fandom. However, female fans - even though they identify themselves simply as 'fans' - also share an experience of negotiating a complex fan identity as women within a sport that is institutionally sexist.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to explore the possibilities of improving the viewer experience of a broadcasted football game with the use of additional information, applied to the footage with the use of motion tracking. This work was conducted in collaboration with SVT Design. which is the inhouse department of the Swedish television network (SVT) tasked with designing, developing and creating graphical solutions. One of the systems developed by SVT Design is the character generator Caspar CG. Which is an open source CG system used worldwide for broadcasting productions. In the spring of 2018, SVT Design presented the idea of incorporating a motion tracking feature within Caspar CG. This would be a feature which could be used during broadcasted sporting events to provide the viewers with additional information regarding the ongoing event. With the use of motion tracking, the additional information could be presented in a dynamic manner in the sense that the information would follow the motion of the tracked object. This thesis aimed to answer the following three research questions; What type of information could be displayed? When and how could this information be displayed? and lastly, how could the addition of information change the viewer’s experience of the football game? The conclusions aimed to provide SVT Design with a set of guidelines and requirements regarding the design and implementation of the additional information in a manner that would promote a positive viewer experience. The methodology applied for this thesis was a qualitative methodology utilizing research activities such as semi-structured interviews featuring three staff members of SVTs department of sport productions. The observation of two broadcasted football games. Along with two focus groups in which the participants were presented with a prototype developed in Adobe After Effects. Consisting of footage from the 2010 FIFA world cup along with additional information that was applied with the use of motion tracking. Through the analysis of the collected data, several recurring keywords and notions were identified and translated into requirements. The requirements, which was structured around the three research questions. Is for example that the information needs to be player specific and to provide an insight of the potential outcome of the game. Another example of a requirement being that the information is to be displayed when there is a break in action during the game. The result from this thesis indicated that if the specified requirements were met. The additional information applied during the broadcast could provide an improvement of the viewer’s experience of watching the broadcasted football game.

Sezen, Ege. "Visualisations and interaction gestures : enhancing the football watching experience via second screen." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2017. http://eprints.lancs.ac.uk/90087/.

Full text
Abstract:
Advancements in mobile technologies and the Internet have changed the habits of TV audiences. As a result, second screen, which can be defined as a form of companion device use to augment TV watching experience, is emerging as a practice. Research shows that a considerable proportion of TV football audiences use second screen when they watch football matches on TV. However, certain details regarding the usage of second screen and how they affect the users’ watching experience are unknown. This thesis investigates how most common visualisations of certain match-related information on second screen affect the watching experience of football matches on TV. This research also investigates how the most used and newly emerging interaction gestures for the retrieval of match-related information via second screen influence the watching experience of football matches on TV. Furthermore, this research provides design recommendations for second screen applications in terms of visualisations and interaction gestures. The design recommendations address to ensure an effective and enjoyable presentation of match-related information adapted to the users’ needs. In order to achieve this, questions such as how memorable and enjoyable most common types of visualisations are, if there is a trade of between them, and what other relevant factors impact on the viewing experience are considered. To address the questions, first, an initial literature review is conducted to analyse how people have experienced football. This is followed by the analysis of people’s behaviour of seeking match-related information on second screen. The findings revealed that match statistics are one of the most sought types of match-related information and smartphones are the most used as second screen. For this reason, the visualisations of match statistics in mobile football apps and websites are evaluated. On top of that, the interaction gestures that were used in those apps and websites were identified. Two types of visualisation and interaction gestures were compared in prototype experiments in terms of their effectiveness, memorability and enjoyment. The findings revealed that different visualisations and interaction gestures had different effects in terms of effectiveness and enjoyment on the watching experience. Specifically, plain number visualisation seems to be less effective and enjoyed than bar charts in general. However, plain numbers seemed to be slightly more memorable than bar charts when the information access through second screen occurred in active gameplay. In addition, tapping for information retrieval on second screen seems be more effective and enjoyable than swiping in general except the performance of recalling verbatim match statistics seems to be slightly better with swiping when second screen activity is performed in non-active gameplay. Therefore, the findings recommend that different purposes need to be considered for the design of the relevant apps and websites in this regard.

Abstract:
The globalization of football as entertainment and the changes in media have generated the development of a new category of public: international viewers. Understanding their behavior proves to be an important research topic for the marketing of federations, leagues and professional clubs. The research is focused on understanding the preferences of international viewers who follow football games in the media. From a theoretical point of view, the conceptual model and the hypotheses have been constructed based on an experimental approach to marketing and the identification process of social psychology. The research model focuses on Moroccan viewers watching two Spanish teams Real Madrid and FC Barcelona on television. It has been tested qualitatively (20 subjects) and quantitatively (903 subjects). Moreover, the influence of other cultural variables has been incorporated. These are the historical connection and geographical proximity to the supported team, and sporting variables: based on playing style, best player and wins to explain the preference for one of the two teams. The results have shown that the preference of Moroccan viewers is above all linked to: [1] the process of identification, [2] the historical connection and geographical proximity to the team, as well as [3] the sporting variables: playing style and wins. These results are important to the development of professional clubs. The sponsors’ understanding of the expectations of the foreign consumer segment enables managers and professional clubs to seek appropriate strategies and solutions to satisfy: the spectators, both ex-patriot and international

Abstract:
Between 1.6 and 3.8 million sports-related concussions are sustained by persons living in the United States annually. While sports-related concussion was once considered to only result in immediate neurocognitive impairment and symptoms that are transient in nature, recent research has correlated long-term neurodegenerative effects with a history of sports-related concussion. Increased awareness and current media attention have contributed to concussions becoming a primary health concern. Although much research has been performed investigating the biomechanics of concussion, little is understood about the biomechanics that cause concussion in humans. The research presented in this dissertation investigates human tolerance to head acceleration using methods that pair biomechanical data collected from human volunteers with clinical data. Head impact exposure and injury risk are quantified and presented. In contrast to the publicly available data on the safety of automobiles, consumers have no analytical mechanism to evaluate the protective performance of football helmets. With this in mind, the Summation of Tests for the Analysis of Risk (STAR) evaluation system was developed to evaluate the impact performance of footballs helmets and provide consumers with information about helmet safety. The STAR evaluation system was designed using real world data that relate impact exposure to injury risk.

Mackenzie, Robert J. "An in-situ exploration of the reflection and experience-based learning of professional football players and coaches." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2014. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/18117.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of the current thesis was to critically examine the reflection and experience-based learning of professional football players and coaches at a football club. Specific attention was paid to the influence that the social environment had on players and coaches experiences and the extent to which they influenced each others experience-based learning and reflective practice. A case study approach using semi-structured interviews and ethnography including participant observation, informal interviews and audio/video recordings informed the current research. Schön's (1983) experience-based theory of learning and reflective practice was used to represent coaches and players reflective practice prior to the application of Foucault (1972, 1979, 1988, 1991a) as social theory. It was found that an institutionally reproduced discourse, which emphasized the importance of winning, governed both coaches and players experience-based learning at the club. Positive discourses of reflection were introduced by coaches and embodied by willing and docile players due to the added legitimacy that was associated with their knowledge. Players reflective practice represented a technology of power as it was dominated by their coaches presence and resulted in players interpretations being normalised to the extent that they became self-surveillant. Players compliance contributed to the construction and reproduction of an overarching disciplinary culture of surveillance that was initially introduced by the club s coaches and made possible through the constant assimilation of data and different forms of performance monitoring (i.e. GPS, video-based PA, physical testing).

Abstract:
Athletic training education has evolved from a model with a strong experiential component and a weak educational curricular component to a standards based framework program. Throughout the development of Athletic Training Education Programs (ATEPs), starting in 1950â s through today when the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) has tightened restrictions and standards for athletic training curriculum. Athletic training education is broken into two components. The first component includes a didactic education or classroom curriculum and the second component involves clinical experience, where hands on experience supplements classroom understanding and allows students to becomes competent with the concepts taught during classroom curriculum. In comparing allied health professions, entry-level athletic trainers perceive approximately 53% of their professional development comes from clinical experiences, while physical therapy clinical experience have been reported to be 23% - 30% of the professional development (Weidner & Henning, 2002). The purpose of the study was to examine if relationships exist between characteristics within ATEPs and athletic training students (ATSs) success on the Board of Certification (BOC) examination. Twenty-four graduates from six selected CAATE accredited NCAA Division I participating Institutions completed a 20 question survey regarding characteristics of clinical experiences within the ATEP as well as other demographic information that may identify relationships between those characteristics and success on the certification examination. BOC EXAMINATION SUCCESS AND CLINICAL EDUCATION iii Results of this study identified no significant relationships between characteristics within ATEPs, football experience, or student demographics and success on the BOC examination. The number of subjects was limited and, if a larger population were surveyed, results may differ. Although not statistically significant, GPA as a predictor of and first attempt success on the BOC examination approached a significant value. These findings show consistency with previous research. In conclusion, this study did not identify relationships that were significant but relationships that approached a level significance. No significant relationships were identified between ATEP characteristics, football experience, or student demographics and BOC examination success. Although fall football experience is not related to success on the BOC examination results show significant relationship between football experience and studentsâ perception of observational role as well as hands on injury evaluation experience. Students who are placed within Division I football tend to hold roles strictly as observers versus those students who are placed within the high school football settings. Future research in the area of clinical experience and success on the BOC examination should continue. A larger sample size, from a variety of athletic conferenceâ s should be included in the survey population.

Abstract:
Generic models of job stress, such as the Job Strain Model (JSM), have recently been criticised for focusing on a small number of general work characteristics while ignoring those that are occupation-specific (Sparks & Cooper, 1999). However this criticism is based on limited research that has not examined the relative influence of all three dimensions of the JSM - job demand, job control and social support - and job-specific stressors. The JSM is the most commonly used model underpinning large-scale occupational stress research (Fox, Dwyer, & Ganster, 1993) and is regarded as the most influential model in the research on the psycho-social work environment, stress and disease in recent times (Kristensen, 1995). This thesis addresses the lack of information on the relative influence of the JSM and job-specific stressors by assessing the capacity of an augmented JSM to predict the strain experienced by managers and professional Australian footballers. The augmented JSM consisted of job-specific stressors in addition to the generic components of the model. Managers and professional Australian footballers represent two very different occupational groups. While the day-today roles of a manager include planning, organising, monitoring and controlling (Carroll & Gillen, 1987), the working life of a professional Australian footballer revolves around preparing for and playing football (Shanahan, 1998). It was expected that the large differences in the work undertaken by managers and professional Australian footballers would maximise the opportunities for identifying job-specific stressors and measuring the extent that these vary from one group to the next. The large disparity between managers and professional footballers was also used to assess the cross-occupational versatility of the JSM when it had been augmented by job-specific stressors. This thesis consisted of three major studies. Study One involved a survey of Australian managers, while studies Two and Three focused on professional Australian footballers. The latter group was under-represented in the literature, and as a result of the lack of information on the stressors commonly experienced by this group, an in-depth qualitative study was undertaken in Study Two. The results from Study Two then informed the survey of professional footballers that was conducted in Study Three. Contrary to previous research examining the relative influence of generic and job-specific stressors, the results only provided moderate support for augmenting the JSM with job-specific stressors. Instead of supporting the versatility of the augmented JSM, the overall findings reinforced the broad relevance of the original JSM. Of the four health outcomes measured in Studies One and Three, there was only one - the psychological health of professional Australian footballers - where the proportion of total variance explained by job-specific stressors exceeded 13%. Despite the generally strong performance of the JSM across the two occupational groups, the importance of demand, control and support diminished when examining the less conventional occupation of professional football. The generic model was too narrow to capture the highly specific work characteristics that are important for this occupational group and, as a result, the job-specific stressors explained significantly more of the strain over and above that already provided by the generic model. These findings indicate that when investigating the stressors experienced by conventional occupational groups such as managers, the large amount resources required to identify job-specific stressors are unlikely to be cost-effective. In contrast, the influence of the more situation specific stressors is significantly greater in unconventional occupations and thus the benefits of identifying these non-generic stressors are more likely to outweigh the costs. Studies One and Three identified strong connections between job-specific stressors and important characteristics of the occupation being studied. These connections were consistent with previous research and suggest that before attempting to identify job-specific stressors, researchers need to first become familiar with the nature and context of the occupation. The final issue addressed in this thesis was the role of work and non-work support. The findings indicate that the support provided by supervisors and colleagues was a significant predictor of wellbeing for both managers and professional footballers. In contrast, the level of explained strain accounted for by non-work support was not significant. These results indicate that when developing strategies to protect and enhance employee well-being, particular attention should be given to monitoring and, where necessary, boosting the effectiveness of work-based support. The findings from this thesis have been fed back to the management and sporting communities via conference presentations and peer-reviewed journals (refer pp 220-221). All three studies have been presented at national and international conferences and, overall, were well received by participants. Similarly, the methods, results and major findings arising from Studies One and Two have been critiqued by anonymous reviewers from two international journals. These papers have been accepted for publication in 2001 and 2002 and feedback from the reviewers indicates that the findings represent a significant and unique contribution to the literature. The results of Study Three are currently under review by a sports psychology journal.

Abstract:
This dissertation has as object the analysis of contemporary Brazilian fiction cinema and the way that it proposes aesthetics experiences of football from subject’s choices and how these are treated by audiovisual language. The period of observation is between 1995 and 2012. In the presence of this proposal the research problem is formulated: what aesthetics experiences are proposed by Brazilian cinema for football in the last seventeen years? What subjects involving this sport appear in the national movies and how they are treated by audiovisual language? From these questions, the work has as general objective to understand how the contemporary Brazilian cinema proposes aesthetics experiences for football, thinking these phenomena from concepts of production of presence and sense, developed by Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht. The research problem begins from three topics – aesthetic experience, cinema and football – in order to answer the specific objectives: a) Debate the aesthetic experience from Communication theory and cinema; b) Argue about the context of cinema and football in Brazilian culture; c) Understand the position of football in the Brazilian contemporary cinema; d) Based on the selected corpus, to map what sports subjects are broached and how they are cinematic staged; and d) Discuss how the analyzed movies propose aesthetic experiences for football. Gumbrecht (2010) defines the aesthetic experience as a variation between sense and presence effects. The sense is the interpretation act in front of some object, while the presence is the perceptive dimension, which means the emotion, in other words, everything that transcends the sense. The alternation between sense and presence occurs during intensity moments, argues the German author. The idea of intensity moments is used for methodology procedure to analyze the movies, in order to discuss how some aesthetic experiences are inspired. The works studied are: Boleiros – era uma vez o futebol (1998) and Boleiros 2 – vencedores e vencidos (2006), both directed by Ugo Giorgetti; Garrincha – estrela solitária (2003), by Milton Alencar; Carandiru (2003), by Hector Babenco; O Ano em que meus pais saíram de férias (2006), shot by Cao Hamburger; Linha de passe (2008), by Walter Salles and Daniela Thomas; and Heleno (2012), by José Henrique Fonseca. The analysis categories for the observation of presence and sense effects were structured in subject issues (football of the present and past, sport memory, football and social vulnerability and the relation between players and fans) and aesthetic issues (mise-en-scène, montage and sound).

The NFL has a salary structure in which the minimum salary a player can receive increases with the player’s years of experience. Salary schedules similar to the NFL’s exist in public education, Secret Service, Internal Revenue Service, other federal government agencies, the Episcopalian church, and unionized industries. Even though the magnitude of the salaries in the NFL differs from other industries, this study provides insight to the impact of this type of salary structure firm tenure, career length, and the experience distribution. In the first essay, I analyze the impact of minimum salaries on firm tenure and career length for six positional groups in the NFL, defensive backs, defensive linemen, linebackers, running backs, tight ends, and wide receivers. A major advantage of using NFL data is that I am able to control for a player’s productivity. I find statistically significant evidence that minimum salaries shorten firm tenure and career length when they require teams to increase a player’s base salary from year t to year t+1 or a player’s total compensation from year t to year t+1. In the second essay, I analyze the impact of minimum salaries on the experience distribution. I exploit the fact that the NFL’s minimum salary schedule causes the relative minimum price between two experience levels to change over time. This provides teams with an incentive to substitute away from the experience level whose relative minimum price becomes more expensive. I find evidence that when relative minimum prices change, the experience distribution changes.

Abstract:
Fans of college sports embrace the idea of athletes playing sport and, in turn, receiving tuition scholarships that provide them an opportunity to trade athletic talent for a free education. A contradictory body of research using internal colonization theory posits that the trade of education for playing sports is not a fair exchange but is fraught with exploitation that continues to perpetuate subjugation. An accepted narrative in athletic competition is that the recruiting pipeline draws athletes from impoverished inner-city areas engaging young athletes who experience difficulties keeping up scholastically becoming academically resistant as they focus on their sport at the expense of their academics. Biopsychosocial and developmental neuroscience research recognizes outside social factors as variables that affect the development of the brain, thus influencing basic mechanical operations of specific brain structures. This dissertation breaks new ground by utilization of the 10-question Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Inventory to explore a possible relationship between ACE scores and Academic Resistance (AR), ACE scores and Locus of Control, and ACE scores and Identity Foreclosure. Using the T-test to determine a relationship between 194 participants’ ACE scores and AR, the findings showed the probability of Type I error of 5%, to be that the AR of student athletes with an ACE score >=2, n=94, to be significantly higher than the AR of student athletes with an ACE

Gentry, Roy Michael. "A comparison of two instructional methods of teaching the power clean weight training exercise to intercollegiate football players with novice power clean experience." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28353.

Full text
Abstract:
There is conflict between recognized Strength and Conditioning professionals and organizations regarding the most effective methods of teaching the power clean weight training exercise. The area of greatest conflict is related to the effectiveness of whether to specifically introduce and segmentally practice the Double Knee Bend technique or not. Sixty collegiate football players with novice power clean experience were randomly assigned to one of three groups: (1) a group in which the double knee bend technique was taught and practiced segmentally (DKB); (2) a group which was instructed in the same way as the DKB group except that the double knee bend was not specifically taught or practiced segmentally(NDKB), and (3) a control group (CG) which was exposed to an orientation session similar to the first two groups, but was not specifically instructed in the power clean technique. Subjects in all three groups were video taped performing the power clean with a standardized weight both prior to and following a seven week training session. Each video taped trial was randomly assigned to an expert reviewer for qualitative analysis in a blind review. Reviewers rated the three upward movement phases as well as the total upward movement phase of the lift using a published check list and rated the performance from one to five with five being the best technique. The result of the ANOVA and a Scheefe test showed that the two treatment groups both demonstrated significant improvement pre to post test in the power clean technique p<0.01. The control group did not significantly improve over the course of the same training period. In comparing the two treatment groups, the between groups analysis (DKB) and (NDKB) were not significantly different. These results suggest that the double knee technique does not need to be specifically taught or segmentally practiced in order to improve power clean technique among college football players with novice power clean experience.

The sports market is increasingly standing apart for its significant market share and growing economic influence before global consumption scenarios. In view of that, soccer (football), identified as one of the most popular and profitable sports within that context and having Brazil as one of its most significant hosts, represents an economic, leisure, and consumption modality which is relevant to investigation. It is supposed that experiences are aspects resulting from appraisals between internal dispositions and personal characteristics of an individual and their relationship to a certain product or system. Because of that, even though they are subject to influence, experiences cannot be projected. On the other hand, project and development of products oriented by the user’s personal dispositions tend to promote an enhancement of appraisals and, therefore, of the experiences the individual has with a product. Based on that, by means of exploratory research with soccer team supporters, a comprehension was sought about how design may potentialize pleasing experiences for supporters. A bibliographical study involving areas such as experience design, emotion design, and consumption by sports spectators was conducted aiming at supplying theoretical inputs to research. The investigation was conducted through two steps of data gathering: the first, qualitative step involved in-depth interviews, and the content was analyzed from the concerns perspective, based on the appraisals theory. Then, the second, quantitative step was carried out by applying surveys aimed at confirming and measuring the incidence and correlations between the results found on the first step. As main results from the work stand the suggestion of a theoretical framework addressing the process of triggering pleasing experiences in supporters and the identification of opportunities of influence from design through seven project guidelines oriented to potentialize the experiences by soccer club supporters outside the stadium.

Brownrigg, Andrew. ""I shouldn't have problems because I'm a footballer" : exploring the lived experiences of career transition in UK male professional footballers." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2015. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/26438/.

Full text
Abstract:
The current study focuses on understanding the lived experiences of male professional footballers during the process of career transition, specifically the transition out of professional football. The study was carried out over two stages. Within both stages of the research, the professional footballers found themselves within or, facing the possibility of career transition out of the game. Stage one used a focus group method with eight professional players facing the possibility of career transition. Stage two adopted face-to-face and online interviews with twelve players, being made up of professional players (some facing the possibility of career transition and some who at the time were in a rehabilitation centre for addiction and within career transition) as well as, a group of potential (Academy) professional players all facing the possibility of transition out of the game. The interviews allowed the players to express what it is like to anticipate or live through the experience of career transition out of football. Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis was used for stage one and elements of van Manen’s human science/hermeneutic approach during stage two. The analysis of the interviews produced a number of key themes, including experiencing ‘self and identity’, ‘help and support’, ‘the gaze of others’ and, ‘uncertainty and disempowerment’. Importance for professional footballers was laid on meeting the requirements and expectations of others within the world of professional football. For some, this was experienced as a need to put on a pretence to live up to requirements, whilst for others it meant accepting abusive treatment as part of their development. What is more, the players often felt constantly judged and assessed and this was something they lived even in the absence of others. The players’ experienced a need to portray the characteristics of hegemonic masculinity, especially physical and mental strength at all times. In addition, the players felt like commodities, as if they were machines. Therefore, some professional footballers’ experienced conflict between their public and private self, especially during difficult times and thus, a need to outwardly show to others that they were coping with things, when actually in private they were not. The research findings inform a number of recommendations to sporting organisations, professional football clubs and professional footballers to improve the current and future lived experiences of professional footballers. Principally, there is a need to educate and develop those within professional football, in particular those in positions of responsibility, about the ways in which their relationships are influential in the lives of professional footballers in the immediate and long term. Encouraging professional footballers to adopt different ways of being men, could be seen as beneficial to professional footballers’ lived experiences. Hegemonic masculinity ideals in the culture of professional football could be replaced by healthier scripts, such as pursuing holistic development and improving team spirit and cohesion.

This work aims to investigate the spectator narratives associated with live football and TV football broadcasting. Long interviews (McCracken, 1988) were conducted with 16 subjects, focusing on their personal history and experienced narratives are related to life and sports practice and consumption. Interviews were focused on subjects experiences with live and TV football watching experiences. The conceptual framework provided by Holbrook (1999) was used to identify consumer behavior; to describe the different forms of fruition and evaluation. Observations points to active participation in message building on the pitch with high leveIs of connotative content, contrasting with high denotative content on the TV messages, which stresses the didactical character of TV broadcastings. As the forms of presentation of the football spectacle can be seen as packets of information, we can bring to this analysis the ideas of Eco (2001). For Eco, the value of information is proportional to the richness of choices and possible meanings. Such approach is consistent with the proposition by Holbrook (1999) that the valuation of consumption experience is derived from interaction with the world. This way, the degree of interactivity is directly related to the volume of associative connotations preceded by the spectator.

ABSTRACT This thesis presents the results of predominantly bibliographical research, which main objective was to investigate the formal and conceptual characteristics of football association (soccer) that would make possible to say that through the relationship with the sport in question, the Brazilian fan lives through a true tragic experience as configured in terms poetic expressed from elements related to its form, and a theoretically based on the information related to the experience from a philosophical point of view. Thereunto, different ways of understanding the concept of “tragedy” and “tragic” were investigated, from the dramatic literature and philosophical literature presenting research on the subject, anchored respectively in Aristotle and Friedrich Nietzsche. In addition, original and own concepts were built inspired by a dramaturgical logic tested in the chosen object, namely, the Football World Cup 1950, held in Brazil, focusing more specifically in the last match that was played between Brazilian’s and Uruguay’s teams.

Abstract:
This study was made by two students for their bachelor theses in Tourism Studies at Södertörns högskola in Sweden. The aim of the study was to investigate the social aspects of football tourism from a sustainable perspective. The study investigated what's essential for football travellers when they travel both abroad, but also in Sweden, to see a football game. Another factor that was investigated was how the locals, especially those living near a arena, are influenced by the behavior of the football travelers when a football event is taking place. The problems that may arise with a football trip are that locals and travelers can end up in conflicts that can lead to social consequences at the destination as well as reduce social sustainability. This study investigated this phenomenon and by identifying the problems which arise with a football trip, it can help to increase the social sustainability of the destination.  The method which was used to investigate the phenomenon of this study consisted of interviews with football travelers, the locals around Friends Arena, employees at Friends Arena and a football organizer. This was considered to contribute to a deeper understanding of the phenomenon and also give an understanding from different perspectives. At the same time, an observation was also performed on a football game to increase knowledge and understanding of a football event, but also to gain insight into the behavior of football travelers. The material that was gathered in form of interviews was then combined with theories to get a better perception of the phenomenon. The result of the study showed that the biggest motive for a football trip was to get and feel belonging with other supporters. It was the feeling of identity with other travelers that mattered the most. The result also showed that football travelers end up in a free zone where everything is allowed, which contributed to changing their behavior during the trip. Alcohol turned out to be a big part of this belonging with others and a significant part of the travel, especially in Sweden. This contributed that the local population, especially the older group, felt worried when there was a football event. It also turned out that because of this they had to adapt their personal needs and could not be near the arena when there was a football event. This also contributed to social conflicts among football travelers and locals and reduced social sustainability at the destination.  The problems surrounding football tourism proved to arise among the locals when they felt worried and had to adapt to a football event. Football travelers didn't see this as a problem because they ended up in a free zone and ignored individuals around them. Sustainable tourism should satisfy the needs of the tourist while not having to destroy the need of the local population. This was not achieved in this case, which also makes the social sustainability of football tourism difficult to achieve.

This study discusses the concepts of Design in a peculiar consumption context, namely, soccer. This study thus limits itself to the examination of the design process of fan experience in the football stadium, from the perspective of Strategic Design and based on the Sport Club Internacional of Porto Alegre case. To this end, the case-study was the adopted research methodology, as well as a review of literature. Interviews were applied to the main actors involved in the Beira-Rio stadium renovation project. The results indicate that some stages from the case in question are compatible with Strategic Design concepts. However, there is also an opportunity for the use of metadesign as a tool for the conception of innovative products and services. In addition, the positive relationship between design and user experience is evinced. Accordingly, Design for Experience is established as a tool that qualifies and affords unique and memorable experiences for consumers.

This paper addresses the acceptability of mobile applications in the local sports venues, where technological evolutions tend to be larger, being these integral parts of the spectacle, of all those who experience and program it. In a sporting event, the adept tries to watch a show, not leaving aside all the experiences that can enhance his comfort, entertainment and safety. Nowadays, technologies are increasingly involving the fans and agents involved in these events, where the bridge is made through smartphones, mobile applications and other technologies that are in the stadiums. Through this study, we will understand the acceptability of the fans to mobile applications, before, during and after a football event, the most popular sport in Portugal. It will also address the satisfaction of fans regarding the use of mobile applications and associated services. With this study, we verified that the Performance Expectancy, Facilitating Conditions, Hedonic Motivations and Habit are factors that impact on the technology adoption. Regarding the topic about the supporters? satisfaction with the usage of mobile applications and the services associated with it, we verified that the Accessibility, Exterior Stadium, Interior Stadium and Food and Beverages Services are factors that satisfy. The study is based on two research models: Venkatesh, Thong, & Xu, 2012) and (Hock, Ringle, & Sarstedt, 2010). Abstract:

Research evidence suggests that professional players across a variety of sports may be at greater risk of developing addictions and other mental illnesses than the general population, both during and post-career. In this paper, we report findings from a larger project on the experiences of career transition in UK professional footballers that provide some insight into this. Using an Interpretative Phenomenological approach, four ex-professional footballers who were attending the Sporting Chance Clinic for help with problems concerning alcohol and gambling were interviewed in depth about their experiences. Focussing on issues the players perceived to be relevant to their addictions, the data were analysed thematically, drawing on Van Manen’s phenomenological method, and individual case histories were also produced. The analysis suggested that club culture was key to understanding the players’ difficulties; a harsh, unsupportive psychological environment combined with expectations of manliness resulted in a culture of silence in the face of personal difficulties. Relationships within the culture of pro-football were fraught with anxiety and distrust, leaving the players feeling unable and unwilling to disclose their problems and feeling used and unvalued by their managers. The lack of supportive relationships in their clubs also resulted in loneliness and social withdrawal for the participants. We conclude with a number of recommendations for the governing bodies in professional football, clubs and individual players.
