Abstract:
Many professional football clubs have big plans for new stadiums or stadium expansions. Bigger stadiums are a sign of status, help to increase and diversify revenue streams, and enhance the fan experience. So how should a football club go about getting a bigger stadium? Should they build a new one or expand their existing stadium? And how are these stadium investments associated with club performance? Using an event study approach, we analyze sporting performance in the years around stadium investments in the English Premier League from 1992/1993 to 2021/2022. We find that clubs with stadium expansions have better subsequent sporting performance while clubs with new stadiums do not. Further analysis indicates that investments in new stadiums are associated with a temporary decrease in transfer expenditure. This decrease is not the case for stadium expansions as transfer expenditure is maintained and performance on the field subsequently improves. In summary, our analysis indicates that stadium expansions are the better option for professional football clubs as they increase both stadium capacity and sporting performance in the short-term.

Abstract:
In the context of football’s globalisation, some of the most important football clubs (FCs) can currently be classified as ‘entertainment multinationals’. Sport hospitality provides opportunities to maximise club stadiums’ use so that they can increase clubs’ annual turnover and function as branding platforms. This study sought to identify the main narratives shared online about—and the dimensions of—visitors’ experiences with top football brands in stadium tours. The data collected for this research comprised 400 text reviews for 10 European FCs’ stadiums (i.e., 4000 reviews) written by visitors in the post-experience phase. Content analysis of these Web reviews was conducted using Leximancer software. The results confirm the existence of 15 themes: fan, tour, stadium, team, museum, room, staff, game, (best) place, ticket, seating, recommend(ation), food, shop and attraction. Most researchers have examined stadium tours from a supply-side perspective. The present study’s aim was, therefore, to contribute to the existing literature by analysing stadium tours’ dimensions from the visitors’ point of view. Stadium tours and museum visits are important sources of revenue that contribute to FCs’ economic sustainability. Offering outstanding customer experiences is thus of utmost importance to maximise club stadiums’ usage and strengthen fans’ engagement.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Traditionally, sport facility performance has been overlooked in the scholarly literature. However, in recent years, as the sport industry has become more revenue-driven, non-game day sport facility performance has begun to receive increasing attention. In intercollegiate athletics in the United States, one way that university athletic departments have begun to generate revenue is through the utilization of football stadiums as non-sporting event venues (Lee, Kim, & Parrish, 2015). However, little research has examined how intercollegiate athletic departments strategically utilize football stadiums as non-sporting event venues. Using a mixed methods approach, including qualitative content analysis and open-ended questions, the present study assessed how National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I athletic departments utilize their football stadium as a non-sporting event venue. Results showed that more than half of NCAA Division I athletic departments provided information as to the availability of their football stadium as a non-sporting event venue. Specifically, almost 70% of Power Five schools provided such information versus only 35% of non-Power Five schools. Also, findings revealed that some athletic departments do not provide this information on their website because they either prefer to keep stadium rental information internal or they are in a transitional stage in which they are working toward providing information about using their football stadium as a non-sporting event venue in the near future. Additionally, the results demonstrate that a majority of the users of football stadiums as non-sporting event venues were from local businesses or organizations. A discussion of the implications of these findings as well as opportunities for future research conclude this study.

Abstract:
Beyond the beautiful game, place is another factor in terms of importance for mix marketing. In football industry place is mainly related to the stadium where the football is produced and consumed from the fans of clubs. For football marketers the atmosphere of the stadium that must prevail to make the fans experience unique, remains one of the most important challenges every week of the seasons. Fans around the world tend to have special experiences in the stadiums, not only for the conditions and services but also mainly for the equipment with the latest technology around it. In Albania, poor quality stadiums and their hostile environment is still an obstacle to the development of football. The main purpose of this study is to understand how the place marketing factor affects football fans in Albanian championship. Using a national representative sample of football fans (N=800), we use exploratory factor analysis to analyze place marketing factor, thus exploring dimensions that define football consumption behavior. The analysis results in four factors, which display nuances of the place marketing factor in the football consumption of Albanian fans. Further, ANOVA is used to examine differences between groups.

Abstract:
The article considers the peculiarities of the strategies of behavior of fans in Soviet stadiums in the postwar period. On the example of the city of Kyiv and the “Republican” stadium, an analysis of the competition between officially permitted, acceptable models of behavior and alternatives to them, which took place during football matches, is conducted. The Soviet stadium during football matches was a kind of point of “inaccessibility” for the authorities. Watching matches at the stadium was accompanied by a more intense public display of emotions, in contrast to other sports spectacles (for example, a physical culture parade). Before the start of «perebudova» and the announcement of “glasnist”, the official press kept silent about the real situation in the stadiums and the scale of the conflicts that arose after the matches. Also, it ignored any unusual forms of manifestation by fans of their football-related identity (for example, a march of spectators through the city after the match). Violence in stadiums, “incorrect behavior” (such as insulting football players, songs with obscene language) could not be part of the official Soviet spectator culture. The deconstruction of the image of the “good” fan created by Soviet propaganda and its comparison with the materials of oral historical interviews leads to the conclusion that the practices of Soviet fans in and out of the stadium on the day of the match undermined the government’s monopoly on the city. The widespread popularity of football in the Soviet Union and its widespread discussion contributed to the construction of fan communities, the identity of which was formed by opposing the support of “our” against “foreign”, hostile teams. The principled nature of football matches for interested Soviet citizens turned the review of games at the stadium into a place of emotional demonstration of the fans’ identity. Violations of public order, collective “celebrations” or demonstrations of dissatisfaction with the results of the game, spontaneous marches from the stadium after the match became part of the unconscious resistance to the established models of “correct behavior”.The context of “perebudova”, the lack of prepared reaction of law enforcement officers led to the escalation of the conflict and, in fact, to the actual and symbolic appropriation of urban space by Kyiv fans during the clashes.

Abstract:
Today, Ukraine, like the whole world, is going through difficult times, the state of the economy is affected by such problems as war, pandemics. However, even greater losses are caused by often ill-considered actions, there is no strategy for the development and planning of construction and reconstruction of existing multifunctional stadiums at both the regional and national levels. The article reviews the condition of several existing multifunctional stadiums inherited from Soviet times. The fate of these stadiums is different and similar at the same time. After holding the EURO-2012 football championship, years have passed and the authors of the article are interested in the question: has anything changed for the better in the field of design and reconstruction of multifunctional stadiums. The article considers both the newly made project according to modern requirements (“CSC ZSU” stadium in Kyiv), reconstructed for EURO-2012 (“Metallist” Stadium in Kharkiv), and the stadium that needs urgent action to implement the reconstruction project (“Metallurg” Stadium in Kryvyi Rih). An analysis of the results of the competition STEEL FREEDOM is also given as an example of a modern approach to the design of new modern stadiums.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic brought about significant disruptions across society, particularly impacting the realm of sports, including English football. One of the most notable changes was the absence of crowds during matches, which deviated from the vibrant atmosphere traditionally associated with football stadiums. This study seeks to conduct a comprehensive analysis of how the absence of crowds affected the performance of English football teams during the pandemic seasons, specifically focusing on the English Premier League (EPL) in the 2020-2021 season. The EPL, like many other leagues, had to adapt to the pandemic by playing matches behind closed doors. This was a significant departure from the norm, as the home crowd historically influenced team performance. We conducted a quantitative analysis, examining metrics like goals scored, goals conceded, wins, and losses for all 20 EPL teams in both the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons. The impact of empty stadiums varied; teams heavily reliant on home support, such as Liverpool and Manchester United, were more affected, as were attacking teams like Manchester City and Chelsea. This analysis provided valuable insights into crowd absence effects, supported by statistical tests. The study also explores factors like home advantage, player motivation, communication dynamics, and the psychological impact of empty stadiums while assessing teams' resilience in adapting to unprecedented circumstances. Keywords: Football dynamics, English football, Crowd absence, Stadium atmosphere and Sports performance.

Abstract:
Football is the most popular team sport in the world. It is entertainment, primarily for men, but nowadays, it can be said that the number of women at football stadiums is steadily increasing. Given the long history of spectator sports events consumption, it is not a surprising fact that there have also been serious manifestations of spectator aggression. The paper aims to analyze the relationship between women visitors’ verbal and other expression and their violent behavior on an example of SK Slavia Prague football club. Primary data were collected by a questionnaire survey mainly at the Eden stadium and other selected Czech football stadiums in 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons. A total of 120 respondents (aged 25.01 ± 10.20 years old) participated in this research, and all of the respondents were attending the matches in a stand of home team supporters. We state that there are correlations between women visitors’ verbal and other expression and their violent behavior; e.g., the surveyed respondents had no experience with demolishing stadiums and other riots. The respondents also consider it to be the most serious activity at 82.58%. The racism display noted similar results. We state that the results are adequate for women visitors.

Abstract:
The aim of the present research is to investigate three factors, namely perceptions of fairness in intergroup situations, ingroup identification and spatial dimensions that are assumed to contribute to why individuals participate in violence against the police in soccer stadiums. In Study 1 perceptions of fairness, identification and spatial perspective were manipulated and the results indicated a significant interaction effect between identification and spatial perspective. This interaction effect had a significant influence on negative behavioural tendencies towards police. In Study 2, identification and spatial perspective were manipulated and once again the interaction effect between identification and spatial perspective was found. A main effect of identification was found in that participants who identified lower with fans showed significantly more positive attitudes towards police. The results of the two studies highlight the importance of looking beyond the inherent nature of the crowd itself when analysing situations of police/fan conflict, and also the need to further investigate the spatial dimension and how it influences social judgment and decision making.

Abstract:
The National Football League (NFL) stands as one of the most visible and dominant organizations within American popular culture. However, despite being at the pinnacle of its popularity and the precipice of its seemingly last obstacle of international expansion, the last decade has seen the league confronting a series of crises that have destabilized and challenged the previously coherent meanings of the sport put out by the league and broadly recirculated within popular discourses. Propelled by these crises, the previously accepted framing of the league as “America's game” has come under increased scrutiny as media, citizens, and public officials critically reevaluate the role and merits of the league in contemporary American society. In this project I examine three cases situated in or around these crises: (1) the increased awareness of the medical dangers of playing the game, (2) the emergence of luxury stadiums, and (3) the league's philanthropic efforts. These case are an important heuristic lens for examining contemporary tensions between the NFL, identity, community, and commerce. As the league increasingly positions itself as a global media and sport corporation, it is upsetting and reshaping its historical localisms: the relationships to its fans, the cities that host its teams, and even the country which it calls home. Furthermore, the economic pressures of continual capitalist expansion as guided by neoliberal restructuring—favoring privatization, the primacy of unregulated markets, and ideologies of individual determination—require the incessant commodification of not only the NFL and its players, but also its constructed meanings. In examining these cases, this dissertation establishes and analyzes the often contradictory and contested motivations, aspirations, and meanings of the league in contemporary U.S. society.

Abstract:
Sporting spaces of football clubs are proeminent buildings in the landscape, whose function involves feelings and passions in the audience that lives daily the most popular sport in Brazil, turning the stadiums and football grounds in a kind of pilgrimage temple and a representative historic and cultural heritage of the place where it is inserted. In Brazil, and more pricesely in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the role of football goes beyond the limits of sport competition scenario, and becomes part of the cultural structure of the society. Considering the historical background of the development of football in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, more precisely in the city of Porto Alegre, this study aims to understand how was the historical process of development of sports spaces of the clubs that offered the practice of football in Porto Alegre in the first half of the twentieth century. To the realization of this historical research, the methodological principles of cultural history were used, in a documentary research through printed sources such as the "Revista do Globo", the newspaper "Correio do Povo" and others that circulated in Porto Alegre at the time of the study, as well papers that talks about the history of football in Porto Alegre. Analyzing the sources, the work shows the existence of three different phases of the spaces of football clubs in Porto Alegre: The first, between 1903 and 1909, which were formed the first spaces to the practice of football, through the clubs linked to the germanic sports associationalism; the second, comprising the 1910s, 1920s and 1930s, in which new clubs, stadiums and leagues are organized, through an opening of the sport to others ethnic groups present in the city, leaving the aristocratic circles by the appearance of fields and stadiums in working-class and popular neighborhoods; and a third in the 1940s and 1950s, entering in the 1960s, where occurred the construction of the biggest stadiums the city, reflecting the massification and popularization of football and especially the preponderance of two clubs, “Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto-Alegrense” and “Sport Club Internacional.”

Abstract:
The aim of this research, conducted with the main theoretical and methodological tools of cultural anthropology, is to examine the multidisciplinary meanings and the heterogeneous media narratives related to the sport event “South Africa 2010-World Cup". The event is studied from two connected interdisciplinary points of view, as a media event and as a collective crowd phenomena. The three main considered dimensions: the media, the crowds and the stadiums are interrelated in a network of “glocal” meanings which are also strictly connected to the representations and narratives covered by local and international mass-media. In the second part of the Thesis particular focus has been done on the dynamics of interaction and organization of the crowd followed the sport event in the city of Cape Town. This interaction is not separate from the complex media field and the communicative issues related to the South African 2010 World Cup. The chapter dedicated to the analysis of the stadiums, intended as a cultural and symbolic sites of interaction and as a complex field under media narratives influence, was conducted in a comparative perspective to the Italian stadiums situation. The heterogeneous spaces of meaning of the 2010 World Cup through the case studies analyzed in this dissertation are focused to enlighten the complexities of the relations between media, football and multidimensional symbolic contexts of contemporary sport.

Abstract:
This research investigates practices of soccer supporters concerning new Brazilian stadiums, opened for the 2014 World Cup. The period analyzed was the change in the place of Sport Club Corinthians Paulista games: Estádio do Pacaembu (Pacaembu Stadium) and Arena Corinthians (Corinthians Arena). The field research was based on the accompaniment of supporters activities on game days, when the differences between places could be observed from the action. The flow of actors through the city is highlighted in order to question not only their action inside the sports arenas, but also implications from the uses of urban spaces and facilities. From the situations observed, subjects as city representation, supporting ways and specific consumption have been crossed along the ethnography and by following different supporters groups in different stadiums and city places, some dichotomies may be classified, such as: organized supporter/associated supporter, public transport/private vehicle, stadium/arena, Pacaembu/Itaquera. So, it was possible to verify regular actions of those subjects that have passed through impacts due to the change in stadium as well as clarify such dichotomy ideas. Finally, wide changes have been investigated in the way of conceiving the spectators of soccer spectacle.

Abstract:
Crowd noise levels in large stadiums are often discussed in the press and by the casual stadium patron; however, there has been little scientific evaluation of these levels and their corresponding effects. An effort was undertaken at Penn State University to measure noise on the field at Beaver Stadium (State College, PA: capacity 107,282) during a PSU football game. The two-fold purpose of these measurements was to evaluate the noise levels with respect to how they affect the game and make real-time, calibrated recordings for future use in the football team’s indoor practice facility. Measurements were taken on the field level using sound levels meters and DAT recorders throughout the PSU vs. Ohio State University football game on 27 October 2007. As a point of comparison, similar measurements were conducted by a team of researchers from Virginia Tech during the VT vs. University of Miami game on 17 November 2007 at Lane Stadium (Blacksburg, VA: capacity 66,233). The crowd noise levels are compared between the two stadiums taking into account the circumstances of the two games, time of day, and design of the stadiums. The levels on the field are evaluated in terms of speech intelligibility, i.e. the ability of the players to communicate with each other. In addition, a hearing loss safety assessment for both fans and players is presented.

Abstract:
The article presents one of the alternative and popular forms of sports tourism - groundhopping. Groundhopping is carried out by football fans who want to get to know specific regions, locations or football stadiums they consider important or interesting. The aim of this theoretical paper is to define groundhopping in the context of sports tourism. The text is compiled on the basis of foreign literature and Czech experience with this phenomenon. The data are also based on interviews with Czech groundhoppers. As the main result of the text can be considered the definition of groundhopping and identified activities associated with this unusual form of tourism. Groundhopping may have significant impact (economic, social, cultural) on particular locations in the Czech Republic, which mainly refers to the specific football stadiums. The conclusions of this text can be used not only in regional development, but also in the sociology of sport or tourism. It can be assumed that groundhopping will develop dynamically also with regard to the fact that this activity is presented on social networks or specialized websites of football fans.

In 11th International Conference “Environmental Engineering”. VGTU Technika, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.3846/enviro.2020.685.

Full text
Abstract:
The task of geospatial monitoring is one of the most common in the practice of geodetic works. In the twentieth century, the basic principles for carrying out geospatial monitoring, accuracy calculation, observation intervals assignment, and data simulation were developed. However, since that time, both the building and geodetic technologies have been changed considerably. Among modern engineering structures, the building technology of which has undergone significant changes are sport structures. The use of the state-of-the-art sport structures is associated with the presence of specific loads, name a few: the impact of a vast number of spectators (e.g., stadiums, cycle tracks, etc.) or loads directly from the competitions equipment (e.g., bobsleigh tracks, race tracks, etc.). The primary goal of the presented paper is to develop a general approach to the preliminary accuracy calculation of the geospatial monitoring of the sports structures using the methods of structural mechanics. As an example, a football stadium was considered. Based on the simulation, the improved technology of geospatial monitoring for the sports structure was suggested. The in-depth analysis of the creation of geodetic networks for geospatial monitoring was accomplished. At the final step, the results of geospatial monitoring for the football stadium were analyzed, and hands-on recommendations were made.

Abstract:
<p>The King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels is for many years the national stadium for football and athletics of Belgium. Being built in 1930 and renovated in 1995, one can image the stadium is outdated and not conform the current safety regulation. Since building a completely new stadium brought too many complexities with it, the latest idea is to renovate the current stadium. A major point of attention is the fan experience in the stadium, which is hard to achieve during football games when a running track is around the pitch. Therefore, a hybrid stadium with modular seats is suggested. It allows to modify the stadium in an ideal way for each event. Two different systems are worked out to move the stands, due to structural and financial considerations. One is based on the use of air cushions, while the other system makes use of cantilever beams. For both systems, it is important to protect the running track, when the stands are in football mode. This modular system creates a lot of extra space in the stadium and will enhance the atmosphere in the arena according to each type of event.</p>

Full text
Abstract:
The relevance of the research topic is due to the fact that marketing in sports is an effective component of sports management, just as it is in other areas of management. Sports marketing has its own specific features based on the characteristics of a particular sport, and this article deals with football marketing. The purpose of this article is to reflect the results of the study of a sports club’s marketing activities. The object of the study is the regional football club “Nizhny Novgorod”(Russia). The main objectives of the study are to identify the factors that attract the fans’ interest to the football club, to attending matches and purchasing club merchandise. Based on a survey of Nizhny Novgorod residents, a study of football fans’ needs in the region was carried out and the target audience of the FC “Nizhny Novgorod” was determined. The results of the survey show that the fans are poorly motivated to attend football matches with the participation of this club. The potential of modern promotion methods such as social media marketing (SMM) is used insufficiently. There is a need to make a more active impact on football consumers in the region, to intensify the work with the fans of the club, to improve the quality and design of the club’s merchandise. As a result of our research, a series of measures have been developed aiming to involve fans in the club’s life, both on match days and between matches. These measures include: promoting season ticket sales, more effective use of the home stadium on match days, active work to attract families with children, organising family leisure at the stadium, stadium tours, activities outside the stadium – weekend events in the city’s parks. The value of the research findings presented in the article lies in identifying the need to create the conditions for a football feast based on football marketing methods, aiming to attract fans to the club.
