Full textSporting spaces of football clubs are proeminent buildings in the landscape, whose function involves feelings and passions in the audience that lives daily the most popular sport in Brazil, turning the stadiums and football grounds in a kind of pilgrimage temple and a representative historic and cultural heritage of the place where it is inserted. In Brazil, and more pricesely in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the role of football goes beyond the limits of sport competition scenario, and becomes part of the cultural structure of the society. Considering the historical background of the development of football in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, more precisely in the city of Porto Alegre, this study aims to understand how was the historical process of development of sports spaces of the clubs that offered the practice of football in Porto Alegre in the first half of the twentieth century. To the realization of this historical research, the methodological principles of cultural history were used, in a documentary research through printed sources such as the "Revista do Globo", the newspaper "Correio do Povo" and others that circulated in Porto Alegre at the time of the study, as well papers that talks about the history of football in Porto Alegre. Analyzing the sources, the work shows the existence of three different phases of the spaces of football clubs in Porto Alegre: The first, between 1903 and 1909, which were formed the first spaces to the practice of football, through the clubs linked to the germanic sports associationalism; the second, comprising the 1910s, 1920s and 1930s, in which new clubs, stadiums and leagues are organized, through an opening of the sport to others ethnic groups present in the city, leaving the aristocratic circles by the appearance of fields and stadiums in working-class and popular neighborhoods; and a third in the 1940s and 1950s, entering in the 1960s, where occurred the construction of the biggest stadiums the city, reflecting the massification and popularization of football and especially the preponderance of two clubs, “Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto-Alegrense” and “Sport Club Internacional.”

Full textThis research investigates practices of soccer supporters concerning new Brazilian stadiums, opened for the 2014 World Cup. The period analyzed was the change in the place of Sport Club Corinthians Paulista games: Estádio do Pacaembu (Pacaembu Stadium) and Arena Corinthians (Corinthians Arena). The field research was based on the accompaniment of supporters activities on game days, when the differences between places could be observed from the action. The flow of actors through the city is highlighted in order to question not only their action inside the sports arenas, but also implications from the uses of urban spaces and facilities. From the situations observed, subjects as city representation, supporting ways and specific consumption have been crossed along the ethnography and by following different supporters groups in different stadiums and city places, some dichotomies may be classified, such as: organized supporter/associated supporter, public transport/private vehicle, stadium/arena, Pacaembu/Itaquera. So, it was possible to verify regular actions of those subjects that have passed through impacts due to the change in stadium as well as clarify such dichotomy ideas. Finally, wide changes have been investigated in the way of conceiving the spectators of soccer spectacle.

The industry of world sport, especially football, has won every year an important place in the world economy. On the other hand, the Brazilian football has a distinct reality of European countries where the average occupancy of stadiums rates exceed 80%, as in our country the average occupancy rate in our stadiums does not exceed 40%. In this scenario, the objective is to identify and analyze the factors that influence in the absence of consumers to professional football matches in stadiums in São Paulo. The theoretical framework covered the following concepts: consumer behavior, the sports consumer, stadiums and arenas as production tools and sports consumption and the absence at sporting events. The study addressed consuming people of football, having sympathy or cheer for a club and that at some point attended professional soccer matches in one of the stadiums and arenas in the city of São Paulo. We opted for the city of São Paulo for their representation in the national football scene and this having four professional football teams that regularly compete for championships at regional and national level in the main divisions of Brazil. This study adopted a quantitative approach, such as data collection instrument used a questionnaire survey, involving such consumers into three distinct periods (before, during and after the FIFA World Cup 2014) and were obtained in each of the moments following samples: (i) at time I gave a sample of 347 participants; (Ii) upon II yielded a sample of 220 participants; and (iii) when III yielded a sample of 268 participants, the final sample of 835 participants. Data analysis was performed in two steps. The first step with a descriptive analysis of the data in order to determine the profile of the participants and the second stage included an exploratory factor analysis in order to verify the sets of factors that express common characteristics in motivating individuals with regard to the nonattendance to stadiums. The results of the analysis have identified common characteristics before and after the canopy and different characteristics during the World Cup. It is hoped that future studies be conducted in other regions in order to identify the variables that most affect the retail football matches consumption in Brazilian stadiums. It is hoped that this research not only meets the academic community, but also make it useful for managers and organizations linked to sport.

Full textThis thesis assesses and explains the economical impact of new stadiums on the business ecosystem of French professional football. From 2008 to 2016, 13 new venues were built or renovated. The aim of this program is to enable the evolution of club revenue models, and, in parallel, the decline of the public subsidies paid to them. This model was witnessed in Germany following a similar program carried out between 2001 and 2006. Firstly, from these aspirations, the indicators used to perform a comparative analysis France-Germany, show that the expected economical results are far from expectations. In order to identify the causal links between ex ante objectives and ex post results, an analysis of the programming and exploitation modalities of the stadium resource is crafted using 7 monographs. This inductive search reveals important structural, financial and organizational limits, generated by the logics of these projects' actors. It appears, by absence of leader, that local communities, clubs and private building companies have failed to initiate the process of coevolution needed for the correct programming of these "tools of production". It therefore demonstrates how an alchemy of competence plays a central role in the creation of a new resource. In addition tothe knowledge and the « know-how », the will for action and sharing, defined by the notion of soft skills or « know-how-towbe », clarifies the initial logics of actors and explains the finalimpact of the stadiums' renovation's public policy in France. Thus, thanks to this specific case, the research enriches works in sports management dealing with the understanding of economic performance of a sports organization, through its assets and business model. Following a logic of new public management, it evaluates the relevance and efficiency of a renovation program that has mobilized more than 2 billion euros of public funds. Finally, following a logic of learning and evolution, this work eventually leads to managerial recommendations

This paper addresses the acceptability of mobile applications in the local sports venues, where technological evolutions tend to be larger, being these integral parts of the spectacle, of all those who experience and program it. In a sporting event, the adept tries to watch a show, not leaving aside all the experiences that can enhance his comfort, entertainment and safety. Nowadays, technologies are increasingly involving the fans and agents involved in these events, where the bridge is made through smartphones, mobile applications and other technologies that are in the stadiums. Through this study, we will understand the acceptability of the fans to mobile applications, before, during and after a football event, the most popular sport in Portugal. It will also address the satisfaction of fans regarding the use of mobile applications and associated services. With this study, we verified that the Performance Expectancy, Facilitating Conditions, Hedonic Motivations and Habit are factors that impact on the technology adoption. Regarding the topic about the supporters? satisfaction with the usage of mobile applications and the services associated with it, we verified that the Accessibility, Exterior Stadium, Interior Stadium and Food and Beverages Services are factors that satisfy. The study is based on two research models: Venkatesh, Thong, & Xu, 2012) and (Hock, Ringle, & Sarstedt, 2010). A survey was carried out, which addressed to issues regarding the adoption of technology and the satisfaction derived from its use. This study also analyzes the mobile applications of three football clubs.

The evacuation from crowded places, subjected to physical and temporal restrictions, is a matter that deserves special attention. If a crowd fails to escape in time from a hazardous environment, by taking a wrong way or by selecting a bad exit, there is great risk of injuries and death. Simulations of crowd evacuation are very important to try to minimize those types of risk. However, trying to simulate emergency situations in real environments is either very expensive or even impossible. Therefore, computer simulation of crowd evacuation is a better alternative. The soccer stadiums are examples of environments that may present risk to people's lives in case of emergency evacuation. The main objective of this work is to gain understanding of the inherent aspects of the problem of emergency evacuation simulation, and to investigate the dynamics of the evacuation behavior of crowds during an emergency evacuation from a soccer stadium. For this, it was proposed a new model for crowd evacuation based on the cellular automata model. In order to validate the proposed model, tests in different situations were performed. It was shown that the proposed model is able to simulate the evacuation of complex environments in an efficient way.

Full textCollege football stadiums host anywhere from 15,000 to 115,000 people each Saturday from late summer to early winter and leave fans exposed to ambient conditions. Amplified heat from stadium infrastructure substantially impact attendants’ thermal comfort. In order to assess personal heat exposure and mitigate exposure misclassification, temperature and relative humidity sensors (iButtons) were placed throughout Mississippi State University’s Davis Wade Stadium during the 2016 Football Season. iButton measurements established a micro-climate and compared its readings to the Soil Climate Analysis Network site 1.2 miles north of the stadium. The program RayMan Pro modeled a Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) micro-climate to create an individualized heat metric. The results of this study assess stadium occupants’ thermal comfort through Heat Index and PET. Heat-related health outcomes were examined regarding thermal comfort and the stadium micro-climate using data from the stadium’s EMS calls and First Aid stations during game days.

Full textThis research sought to understand the effects that the transformation of a Brazilian football stadium into a multi-purpose arena, according to the demands of FIFA - International Federation of Association Football -, brought to the act of supporting a club. In order to do so, it presents an ethnography of the games played at the Allianz Parque. The arena was innaugurated in 2014, after four years of renewal work on the Palestra Itália Stadium, a field belonging to the Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras (SEP), considered one of the most relevant football clubs in both São Paulo and Brazil. After months of observations, it was possible to notice a flow of practices of support between what happens inside and outside the arena. That happens because the place where the Allianz Parque is built, to the west of town, creates a \'Palmeiras territoriality\' in which physical equipment such as pubs and football firms headquarters mix themselves into a moral code guided by the club itself in the streets surrounding the arena.

Full textIn February 2007, Neuchâtel celebrates the inauguration of a brand new soccer stadium. For the club of Neuchâtel Xamax, which has been facing economical difficulties since a long time, this infrastructure represents a promising bright future. Everyone praises without restraint the comfort of the new arena, which is described as a friendly place, convenient to encounters, able to attract bigger crowds of people for long festive afternoons dedicated to the soccer entertainment. The analysis of the real social impact of the modernisation of this type of infrastructure is nonetheless very tricky. It implies not only a critical reflection on the attributes that can be considered as “socially virtuous” for the community, but also requires deciphering how the place works in its whole complexity. Following that, the research first requires the construction of a theoretical and methodological tool, which allows the study of the “integration potential” of this kind of space. Within the framework of the soccer stadium analysis, the use of this tool shows us that, in the case of Neuchâtel, this place plays a quite important social role. Based on various sources (questionnaire surveys, statistics relative to affluences, discourse analysis on a forum, etc.), the comparison of the situations that characterize the old and new infrastructure leads nevertheless to a nuanced assessment of the process of modernisation

Full textThis work of research deals with the ultras football fans' engagement. Most of there searches about football fans reach two models of "extreme" sports fanaticism in comparison with the traditional sports fanaticism: the English model (hooligans) and the Italian one with the ultra supporters' groups. The latter are formed in association under the French Law of 1901, which the most active members are predominantly young men between 15 and 30 years old. Their way of supporting is based on a partisan culture and own activities (creation of activities in the whole terraces, resort to songs and specific gestures, use of pyrotechnic devices, organisation of travels, etc.).This research proposes a detailed study of the creation process of the collective that forms the ultra group and its functioning, through the sociology angle of the deviance and the"subculture" notions (codes, rules, language) or the one of the "career" (ranked structure, different status, reputation). Nevertheless, the objective of this work is to go beyond amonographic reading that would just give a study of the internal functioning of the ultragroup. This research falls within an interactionist conception of the deviance which requests an analysis of the deviants' action - the ultras' one - but also the one of the persons who reactto this deviance, in this case, the action of the law enforcement officers or the agents in charge of the stadium security. This work aims to describe and analyse the interactions between the ultras, the "opposing" supporters groups and the security actors (policemen, football stewards, stadium security directors) by favouring an ethnography of situations and a detailed description of the ultras' social practices. By developing " a perspective in terms of social world" (Strauss) we endeavour to comprehend the ultras' show as a collective production, always negotiated and readjusted in relation to the one of the other actors and the public institutions. This viewpoint also enables to work on the way the ultras' social and "cultural"practices are affected notably by the process of the football supporters' criminalisation: the ultra supporters became, in fact, the "stadium delinquents" and police get specialised in the struggle against this sportive and urban phenomenon. The supporters are now kept undersurveillance, identified, filed, and sometimes "stadium banned" or incarcerated. As part of this research, we have followed the evolution of this world forced to fit and to adapt itself to different developments. The purpose of this research is to describe the social processes that go through the ultras' world and causes its segmentation and fragmentation in several "subworlds"(the stadium banned's one, the "independent" supporters' one, etc.). Mobilising the descriptive and analytical tools of the qualitative interactionist sociology, this research aims to extend the discussion with the Culturals Studies, which works have historically fed most ofthe studies about the sports fanaticism. This research rests upon an ethnographic field work driven by participant observation, principally among the ultra supporters from Saint-Etienne - the Green Angels and the Magic fans -, and by semi-structured interviews with ultras and security actors (policemen, stewards, etc.) in France and abroad. It is also based on the analysis of numerous native documents, press articles and mobilise the photo-ethnography

Full textFootball has become a major industry of entertainment for TV networks and also for companies running football squads. TV rights represent at least 50% of the French clubs incomes. Meanwhile, most of them have disregarded Matchday revenues. For a large majority of them, they don’t own their arenas. Moreover, they play in (too) large stadiums with overcapacities according to average attendances. This is why average prices are below the European average price when we compare French League One with the other major’s championships in Europe. In this field, we suggest long-term leases between public owners and football firms in order to transfer both property and ability to refit arenas and stadiums. In addition, French firms running football clubs have not yet fully used technics of variable prices and dynamic prices. They should also display CRM resources in order to address each segment of costumers, including fans, year ticket holders, walk in customer or families. The target is to hit as close as possible the willingness to pay of each category of customers. We have experienced such policies for Year ticket holders in French third division. Digital resources increase customer insights and sustain cross selling policies increasing revenues as it is done in other comparable sectors such as air transportation, leisure parks, hotels and resorts. We make some suggestions and recommendations to strengthen home revenues in the French professional football League

Full textThe thesis consists of a summary of three completed projects. Photographs, drawings and sketches demonstrate how architectural concepts have been carried through into real buildings. Common to these projects is the clear focus on utility, identity and added value. Kanal 5 in Stockholm is a small glass building. It has become a symbol of the transformation of an entire city block, where operations have changed from industry and crafts to work on conceptual content and media production. The building serves as the main entrance to the older renovated premises. Urban development. Communications. Landmark. Canon in Solna is a medium-sized office building. Its design combines the anonymous aesthetics of prefabrication with the global high-tech company's requirement for an attractive working environment, hospitality and profiling. Connection, transparency and visibility characterize the building's interior organization. Efficiency. Branding. Interface. Swedbank Stadion in Malmö is the result of an entire region's long-term commitment to the local football team, Malmö FF. A genuine football stadium, a theatre for a devoted fan culture, a cash machine for the club in its ambition to establish itself in the international community. Interactivity. History. Revenue.

Full textUsing as theoretical reference the theories of Capital, Habitus, Field and Sports Field, developed by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, a Master\'s Dissertation was carried out in a descriptive-analytical study with a historical-social approach. The analysis undertaken in this research instrument case study that occurred in the national sports scene, which was the construction of the Stadium Cicero Pompeu de Toledo. From the theory of Field and Sports Field, Brazilian football was defined as a social space of sports practice, showing São Paulo Football Club as a sports agent in this field. The built of this work erected by this personage of the soccer scene in Brazil was interpreted through the theories of Capital and Habitus, which allows us to apprehend Morumbi Stadium as an element that allowed São Paulo Football Club to differentiate itself within the sports field, besides to understand the praxis that Sao Paulos leaders have carried out in order to erect their stadium. In this analysis, a period (1970 - 1992) is recorded, starting after the construction of Morumbi, and going on until the conquest of the first world title of São Paulo Football Club. During this phase, it is recognized that the club won numerous sports successes, in addition to increasing its fans throughout the country, elucidating that Cícero Pompeu de Toledo Stadium was one of the possible factors that provided the acquisition of these triumphs
