Full textThe commander on the modern battlefield has the responsibility of supervising more assets and evaluating more information than ever before. Therefore, there exists a need for an aid to assist the commander in selecting a recommended course of action. The purpose of this thesis was to develop a tactical decision aid model that would assist the commander in selecting a course of action. The Quantified Judgment Model (QJM) served as the algorithm in this decision aid model. The QJM is a combat model that analyzed ground combat with a primary focus on the historical aspect of combat. Factors that served as input for the decision aid model included: 1. initial force structure for a US and Soviet force, 2. non tactical variables that influence the battle, 3. intelligence, 4. operational and environmental factors, and 5. current doctrine. The model varied the input variables and determined a force structure necessary for the battle to end in a draw. The primary focus of this thesis was not the assumptions made in the model or the tactical situation examined, but the methodology used in developing the model

This following project describes and assesses the current inventory-stocking model used by Commander Submarine Pacific (CSP) to manage its SSN repair parts stocking levels during a deployment work-up period. We also introduce a proposed demand based inventory management tool called Pacific Regional Inventory Stocking Model (PRISM), and compare it with the model currently being used within CSP. This analysis will then evaluate the effectiveness of each system as a management tool utilizing data from CSP's SSN-688 Fast-Attack Submarines. Decision criteria estimated are operational readiness and cost. The results of this comparison also demonstrate a management tool that optimizes inventory stocking. This will increase an SSN-688 submarine's operational readiness while on station and potentially achieve cost savings through optimizing onboard inventory. Recommendations will be provided, based on the results of the comparison, with respect to the feasibility of implementing PRISM, maintaining CSP's current stocking system, or developing a new submarine stocking system to replace the status quo.

Full textThe thesis that a military commander had little opportunity to guide a battle when it had started has been proposed by the Author Peter Englund. This thesis divides researchers into two sides where the second side means that the Commander had a very big significance to the outcome of a battle. The purpose of this essay is two-fold. The first part of the purpose is to examine whether there were factors other than the Commanders guidance that could determine a contemporary battle and the second part of the purpose is to see if it is possible to apply modern doctrines in the analysis of contemporary cases. The results of the study show that the Commander had little opportunity to control the battle but there was a possibility with an energetic and charismatic example to influence the battle. There are clearly factors in the battles that the Commander could not affect. The answer is that a combination of the Commanders influence and other factors determine a battle, neither stands alone. The purpose was met by that there are other factors identified and a modern doctrine can be used in the analysis.

Full textThe need for a well thought out, planned, and rehearsed command and control organization to conduct special operations in the US Northern Command Area of Responsibility is vital to success in defending the Homeland. Currently, USNORTHCOM does not have an apportioned or assigned command and control structure for the conduct of special operations. This thesis analyzes three courses of action to fulfill this requirement: use the current USNORTHCOM battle staff command structure including the integration of the Standing Joint Force Headquarters-North; rely on the newly formed US Special Operations Command's Joint Task Force Structures; and establish a Theater Special Operations Command North assigned to USNORTHCOM. Through the conduct of analysis and research this thesis recommends that The Joint Staff direct the reorganization required to establish a Theater Special Operations Command North to exercise command and control of special operations forces conducting operations in the USNORTHCOM AOR.

Full textFor an organization to achieve its goals, the commitment of its employees is essential. Therefore, understanding the factors that influence the commitment of individuals to their organizations has inspired the work of many researchers. To the challenge of committing the working force one can add the difficulty of performing this task in organization environments where at least four different generations are enclosed. Possible generational differences in the organizational environment, have also motivated many studies. Having these issues as a background, the present work sought to unite these two themes, as well as had as its objective the identification and the analysis of the main factors that influence the organizational commitment of the Brazilian Airforce administration officers from the X Generation (individuals born between 1965 and 1979) and from the Y Generation (individuals born from 1980 onwards), for these are the more prevalent generations in the organizations at the moment. In order to achieve this objective, a survey was conducted, using a model of multiple databases to measure organizational commitment: the Scale Bases of Organizational Commitment. This scale evaluates seven bases of the organizational commitment: affective; obligation to remain; obligation for performance; affiliative; lack of rewards and opportunities; consistent line of activity and lack of alternatives. The data analysis indicated similarities between the two generations evaluated regarding the bases of commitment. Both X Generation respondents, as those of Y revealed a high commitment regarding the obligation for performance base and a commitment above average regarding the affective base, as well as a low commitment regarding the obligation to remain and lack of alternatives bases. In relation to the affiliative and consistent line of activity bases, however, a small difference could be observed, where the X Generation presented a commitment below average, and the Y Generation a low commitment.

Full textA new concept of airship without thrust, elevator or rudder is considered in this thesis. It is actuated by a moving mass and a mass-adjustable internal air bladder. This results into the motion of the center of gravity and the change of the net lift. The development of this concept of airship is motivated by energy saving. An eight degrees-of-freedom complete nonlinear mathematical model of this airship is derived through the Newton-Euler approach. The interconnection between the airship's rigid body and the moveable mass is clearly presented. The dynamics in the longitudinal plane is analyzed and controlled through a LQR method, a simple state feedback, and the maximal feedback linearization with internal stability. Thanks to maximal feedback linearization, an efficient nonlinear control is derived. In this process, the modelling, analysis, and control are solved for special cases of the airship which become gradually closer to the most general model. The most constrained special case reduces to a two DOF system. It is shown that the basic properties of this two DOF mechanical system remain instrumental for the analysis and synthesis of advanced airships. These properties are far from being obvious from the most complex model. Through a singular perturbation approach, the superposition of the two control actions in the longitudinal plane and in the lateral plane is shown to achieve the control of the dynamics in three dimension

Full textThis project developed a baseline assessment for assisting Commander, Naval Surface Forces (CNSF) leaders and managers in understanding and improving the following information technology programs: Training and Operational Readiness Information Services (TORIS), Continuous Monitoring Program (CMP), and the CNSF Web. The programs were described, assessed, and evaluated in terms of their backgrounds, mission needs, performance, technical requirements, functionality, and contractual terms. One conclusion was that the contractual statement of work does not measure the performance of the system; rather, it is designed to mandate the requirements for the contractor's performance (e.g., indicators that measure downtime, trouble calls, and software bugs are missing). An overarching recommendation is to integrate all staff information technology functions under one authority, while establishing simple and relevant program performance benchmarks to measure and track actual performance.

Full textShape-changing interfaces bring flexibility in physical interfaces through by transforming computational devices into any shape or materiality. Shape-changing interfaces will be increasingly available to end-users in the future, along with technology development. However, we know little about design criteria of shape-changing interfaces for end-users, especially for whom use parameter control interfaces. Parameter control interfaces are often designed based on existing examples such as dials and sliders, and there were few studies to understand user needs behind their usage. On the other hand, there are shape-changing interface taxonomies that allow designers to explore design ideas of shape-changing interfaces systematically, but they are hardly evaluated. In this talk, I discuss my Ph.D. work investigating the two areas of HCI: parameter control interfaces and shape-changing interfaces. I first conduct a formative study to suggest design requirements for parameter control interfaces based on users' current practice. Second, I refine a shape-changing interface taxonomy by evaluating its descriptive power by using everyday reconfigurable objects. Lastly, I look into the intersection of the parameter control interfaces and shape-changing interfaces. I develop two case studies: KnobSlider, a shape-changing interface that can be a knob or a slider, and ExpanDial, a rotational control that extends the interaction modality through shape-changes

Full textThe problem addressed in this thesis concerns the control of industrial robot manipulators which are slightly flexible and used for machining and FSW processes. The first objective is to model the robots and processes. The developed models concern the kinematics and dynamics models of 6-axis robots with serial architecture and flexibility localized at joints. The dynamic model parameters and a part of the joint stiffnesses are identified with the approach of output error which gives a satisfy estimation accuracy. According to identification, the RMS residue of the model is 3.2%. The second objective is to improve the robotization performance of manufacturing processes. A simulator was developed that contains the dynamic model of the flexible robot, the process models and the model of the robot controller including control laws in real time of axes and the trajectory generator. A nonlinear high-gains observer is proposed to estimate the complete states of robot system as well as the operation wrenches. Then the observer-based compensator is proposed to correct the positioning errors in real time. The experimental validation of industrial robots shows a satisfactory estimating performance of the observer. A precise FSW welding owing to the real-time compensation for the flexibility of manipulator has been done successfully
