Abstract:
This thesis is meant to be a contribution to the study of pupils and students (future college and lyceum teachers) conceptualization about the concept of force and mechanical interaction. In the first part we brought several forms of conceptualizations of the relation between the concept of force and the motion and the concept of mechanical interaction out. (1) Versus the Newtonian reasoning of symmetric type in an interaction between two objects we encounter an "agent/patient" one. So we meet models mental such as the model with "single action" and the model with "unequal actions". (2) Concerning the alternative framework of pupils and students about the links of motion and force, we discover that for them, motion implies a force. As a result we have two models of drawing the force: the "impetus" and the "continuous effort" which coexist with the consistent physic model of force. (3) Moreover, we notice that some forces are omitted and others are not convenient when they made the assessment of forces. So, we say that procedural difficulties exist too. In the second part we propose a didactic engineering which aims at helping pupils to overcome conceptual and procedural difficulties. Our approach consists of taking into account the importance of bringing the relation between the concepts of mechanical interaction and of force out. Therefore we carry out a didactic engineering. Analyses show that a sharp evolution intervened among pupils who are involved in our experimentation

Abstract:

Our study is based on the acknowledgement of a double situation in guadeloupe. I) difficulties to conceptualize and to substantialize inherent in socio-historical, cultural conditions and conditions at school. 2) inadequacy of the traditional methods of education ignoring. The originality and the specificities of the guadeloupean. Through a survey on a representative sample of 1852 school going subjects, we have showed that training is not correctly done since it does not take the specificities of the guadeloupean into account : we propose a method, the equipment and a micro-scenario of an educational project, all three inspired by the natural and cultural environment

Abstract:
The studies presented here focus on the nature of mental representations individuals construct during narrative reading, as well as on the influence of causal strngths differences on the construction of those representations and on the storage and retrieval of information contained in those representations. As a matter of fact, we consider text comprehension as a problem solving task. To understand a text requires to indentify the relations beween text units as well as the ones between the text and the reader's knowledge. A text is then perceived and represented in memory as a coherent structure using the causal reasoning. Our studies allowed us to evidence for the psychological pertinence of the representation of the narrative causal structure as a network in which multiple connections are allowed towards one text unit. On another hand, we evidenced that the strength and the nature of a causal relation depend on the philosophical critera of necessity and sufficiency, in the circumstances, of the cause for its consequence. Moreover, the causal strengh (mainly determined by sufficiency) prevails on the number of connections an event has with others. At last, we showed the influence of sufficiency on the generation of forward causal inferences as well as the influence of distance between statements in the text surface structure on the cognitive representation of causal events varying according to their connection strength. Thus, the reader uses his knowledge and his causal reasoning to construct a coherent representation of textual information as a network

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to analyse the problem that the companies do not use the potential of their employees on innovations and intrapreneurial processes.

The source of innovation is usually the entrepreneur. These are individuals that come up with new ideas of what the market is likely to want or desire. These people have usually gathered this knowledge through interaction with consumers. Sometimes it is the imaginative impulsive desire on their part to offer something new or different, at other times it is an improvement on previous knowledge. However in a corporate or large organisation environment it is often the employees who come up with innovative ideas because of their close contacts with consumers of the product or service of the company. They are very close to the ground realities and can be a great source of finding out the consumer desires or preferences. Although they are employees, they have the entrepreneurial spirit to understand the need of urge to meet the expectations. This gives them the same satisfaction an entrepreneur would feel on the success and acceptance of his innovative idea.

Therefore being innovative is not the sole domain of the leaders, corporate or individual. The potential of the workers and employees remains unexploited in this direction.

This study will try to find out the importance of the mental force of the employee on the survival of the company in this competitive world, from the perspective of innovation and intrapreneurship.

Minh, Anita. "Young, alienated, and excluded : youth labour force participation and mental health in Canada." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/52270.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the relationship between youth labour force participation and mental health. Unemployment is generally considered to have a negative association with youth mental health. However, few studies have examined youth mental health in association with being both out of the labour force and out of school (OLFS). I hypothesize that OLFS, a state in which youth are no longer job-searching and are not in school, has a negative association with mental health that is weaker in comparison to that of unemployment, which involves active job-searching. I further hypothesize that socioeconomic status (SES) and recession moderate the relationship between youth labour force participation and mental health, such that both unemployment and OLFS have a stronger negative association with mental health in youth of low SES, and during recession. Two empirical studies are presented to test these hypotheses. The first examines whether SES moderates the relationship between youth labour force participation and mental health, across three constructs of mental health : distress, depression, and life-satisfaction. The results indicate that unemployment is associated with poor mental health across all mental health constructs, and has a stronger association with distress among low-SES youth. OLFS is associated with depression only, with a stronger association among low-SES youth. Among high-SES youth, OLFS is also associated with better life-satisfaction. The second study looks at the relationship between youth labour force participation and mental health in the periods before (2003, 2005), during (2008-2009), and after the most recent global recession (2010-2012). The findings suggest that the recession was related to improvements in the mental health of unemployed youth but was not clearly related to the mental health of OLFS youth. The concluding chapter highlights the contributions of this thesis, addresses its limitations, and discusses implications for policy makers and for future analyses. Policy makers should consider the association between OLFS and mental health, and the effect modification by SES, when designing programs for unemployed youth. Future research can examine the mechanisms between OLFS and mental health across macrosocial contexts, and over the life course.

Abstract:
Aims: This study investigates the effects of physical fatigue, mental fatigue and their combinations on the ability of rugby players to produce force during rugby scrummaging. Method: 10 male subjects (Mean age = 27.4 ± 3.92, Weight =102.9kg ± 10.96) were recruited from local rugby union football clubs in the Stockholm area. Scrummaging force measurements were collected following and before treatments (control), after a 30-min mental task and after a physical fatigue protocol. The mean peak force was calculated by averaging the force data 1 second around the highest peak of force during a 5 second sustained push. Results: Mean force decreased significantly after the physical fatigue (PF) protocol compared to the control (CON) (PF = 1740 ± 342 N vs. CON = 2007.5 ± 359 N. P= 0.0009) and combinations of physical and mental fatigue (PMF) or mental and physical fatigue (MPF) were also found to significantly decrease compared to the control (PMF = 1750 ± 348N vs. CON = 2007.5 ± 359N. P=0.0014 and MPF = 1818 ± 335N vs. CON = 2007.5 ± 359N. P=0.026). Mental fatigue did not significantly decrease mean peak force during the sustained push of a rugby scrum (MF = 1912 ± 321N vs. CON = 2007.5 ± 359N. P=0.52). Conclusion: Physical fatigue reduces the ability of rugby players to produce force during rugby scrummaging, however mental fatigue does not. Furthermore, mental fatigue does not exacerbate the effects of physical fatigue on scrummaging performance.

Abstract:
Background: Recent Canadian Armed Forces operations involved multiple deployments and exposure to traumatic events that are associated with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and substance abuse. Despite efforts to facilitate mental health care, some soldiers do not get the help they need. Objective: To understand soldiers’ experiences and explore barriers and facilitators they encountered accessing mental health care. Results: Qualitative descriptive interviews with 11 Canadian Armed Forces members revealed six major categories that provide insights into their experiences accessing mental health care. Participants’ revealed significant barriers to care including fear of damaging their career or being released, stigma beliefs and actions from peers and leaders, and physical and organizational barriers to care. Social support from family, military co-workers, and unit leaders facilitated care. Conclusions: Notwithstanding efforts to facilitate access to mental health care, some soldiers still perceive significant barriers to care.

Abstract:
Media and activist groups have recently exposed the problem of negative interactions between law enforcement officers and civilians. Many of these civilians have a mental illness. Various researchers attribute these negative interactions to insufficient officer knowledge of mental illness due to a lack of training, education, and personal experiences. Very little research addresses how insufficient knowledge of mental illness may influence interactions. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore and analyze self reported law enforcement knowledge using Malcolm Knowles' conceptualization of adult learning theory and andragogy as the theoretical framework. This framework bases self-directed learning/training on a needs assessment of the individual's knowledge. The main research question was: 'What factors related to officer knowledge of mental illness impact interactions between law enforcement and people with mental illness?' Data were collected through recorded and then transcribed in-depth interviews with 8 law enforcement officers with experience interacting with mentally ill people. Using aspects of modified Van Kaam method of data analysis, word recognition computer programing identified repetitive words and phrases from the data. This resulted in significant common themes, namely: the need for more effective formal training on mental illness and the influence of personal lived experiences in the interaction with people with mental illness. The implications for social change are positive for officers and people with mental illness, as this study will inform the development of more effective officer training models about mental health, which will reduce the number of negative interactions.

Abstract:
Background: For decades, researchers have been striving to better understand the complex mix of factors underlying post-combat mental illness, in the hope of enabling better outcomes for military personnel. This study focuses on investigating the behavior and possible interaction of two risk factors for poor mental health post-deployment to a combat mission: adverse childhood experience (ACE) and deployment-related stressful experience (DRSE). Methods: A longitudinal dataset linking data from 3302 military personnel at recruitment to data collected post-deployment to Canada’s mission in Afghanistan was analysed, using novel scoring systems for exposure classification. Results: Significant ACE-DRSE interaction terms were found in relation to SF-36 MCS, depression and suicidal ideation: the negative effect DRSE had on mental health outcomes was amplified as ACE levels increased. Conclusion: Individuals with a history of childhood adversity are more susceptible to the negative mental health impacts of stressful experiences during deployment to a combat zone.

Abstract:
The aims of the study were to a) estimate the prevalence of specific mental and physical health problems among female UK military personnel, b) examine their association with work, family, and interpersonal relationship stressors and protective factors, and c) explore stressors in these domains and their perceived relationship to health among serving and ex-serving women. A mixed methods approach was used, integrating qualitative and quantitative approaches across several stages of the research. Quantitative data came from female participants (n=1185) who responded to a postal survey questionnaire as part of a cohort study of UK military personnel. This provided the sampling frame for the qualitative study, which included 41 in-depth interviews with purposefully selected participants. While no statistical impact of deployment or parenthood on health was found overall, the interviews identified a far broader array of stressors, protective factors, and outcomes not measureable from the survey data. In particular, the importance of interpersonal factors on well-being and career intentions among women was emphasised. Sources of stress from three main domains were explored: deployment, parenthood, and integration. The importance of including more gender-specific stressors and outcomes in understanding factors influencing women’s well-being and decisions to remain in the military was revealed. The study provides a solid basis on which to build future research, both qualitative and quantitative, to further expand and assess the generalisability of the current findings. Implications for policy interventions are discussed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
There is evidence from epidemiological studies of recent armed conflicts that resilience and the ability to recover from adversity might be common amongst Service personnel. Despite this, neither has yet been directly assessed within U.K. military. The military policy of Rest and Recuperation (R&R) is thought to play an important role in promoting resilience, recovery and wellbeing; however, as yet there is no empirical evidence to support its effectiveness. The current study aimed to develop a measure of experiences of and satisfaction with R&R (R&R-RQ), in order to evaluate its effectiveness in promoting resilience, psychological wellbeing and recovery from deployment. It further aimed to investigate the relationship between exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTEs) and resilience and wellbeing, before and after a period ofR&R. A total of97 participants were recruited who completed self-report measures of mental health, resilience and exposure to PTEs, as well as the new measure ofR&R- RQ. Statistical analysis indicated that R&R-RQ was a reliable measure within the current sample. Recovery following R&R was associated with greater resilience and fewer symptoms of mental health difficulties. Furthermore, exposure to PTEs was associated with some mental health measures but not with resilience. The findings provide information that furthers our understanding of the role ofR&R and its capacity to promote resilience and wellbeing amongst Service personnel. Future research could focus on replicating and extending these findings within the U.K. military as well as further developing and refining R&R-RQ.

Hughes, Laura E. "Effects of Time Pressure and Mental Workload on Physiological Risk Factors for Upper Extremity Musculoskeletal Disorders While Typing." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/10022.

Full text
Abstract:
Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are a major source of lost productivity and revenue in the workplace and disability in workers. There is strong evidence for a relationship between physical risk factors, such as repetitive motions and excessive force, and the development of WMSDs; yet there are unexplained discrepancies in determining which workers are more at risk. Researchers hypothesize that non-physical factors in the workplace, or psychosocial factors, may contribute to the development of WMSDs. The following study examined the effects of two psychosocial factors, mental workload and time pressure, on perceived workload and physiological reactions of the lower arm and wrist during typing activity by measuring muscle activation patterns, wrist posture and movement, key strike forces, and subjective assessments of overall workload. The results indicate that increases in time pressure lead to increases in lower arm muscle activation, key strike forces, and wrist deviations. Key strike forces may increase with higher mental workload levels, but other effects of mental workload were not clear. Perceived overall workload (time load, mental effort load, and stress load) increased with mental workload and time pressure, and typing performance decreased. The evidence from this study suggests that these psychosocial factors (mental workload and time pressure) mediate physical risk factors to increase risk for WMSD development in the upper extremities. The results illustrate the need for those designing jobs and work tasks to consider both physical and psychosocial aspects of the working environment to prevent injuries in employees.

Hansson, Jonas. "Mind the blues : Swedish police officers' mental health and forced deportation of unaccompanied refugee children."

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Policing is a public health issue. The police often encounter vulnerable populations. Police officers have wide discretionary powers, which could impact on how they support vulnerable populations. In encountering vulnerable populations the police officers are required to be professional; maintaining mental health in the face of challenges is part of professionalism. Their encounters with vulnerable populations might influence their mental health which in turn might influence the way they use their discretion when making decisions. Background/context: Sweden receives more unaccompanied, asylum-seeking refugee children than any other country in Europe. The number of asylum applications for such children increased from 400 in 2004 to 7000 in 2014 to over 35,000 in 2015. These children come to Sweden and apply for asylum without being under the care of their parents or other legal guardian. Some are denied asylum. If they do not return to their country of origin voluntarily the police are responsible for their deportation. The Swedish government wants an increasing number of deportations and wants them carried out with dignity. This thesis is about the police officers’ perceptions of how to interpret the seemingly contradictory demands for more deportations, that is, efficiency; and concerns for human rights during the deportation process, that is, dignity. This is conceptualized using three theoretical frameworks: a) street-level bureaucracy, b) job demand-control-social support model and c) coping. These theoretical frameworks indicate the complexity of the issue and function as constructions by means of which understanding can be brought to the police officers’ perceptions of deportation work involving unaccompanied, asylum-seeking refugee children and how such work is associated to their mental health. Aim: The current research aims to investigate and analyse Swedish police officers’ mental health in the context of deportations of unaccompanied, asylum-seeking refugee children. Methods: This thesis uses both qualitative and quantitative methodology. The qualitative approach comprised interviews conducted to achieve a deeper understanding of the phenomenon of police officers’ perceptions of deportations of unaccompanied, asylum-seeking refugee children. The quantitative method involved the use of validated questionnaires to investigate the association between police officers’ mental health and psychosocial job characteristics and coping. This approach made it possible to study a complex issue in a complex environment and to present relevant recommendations. A total of 14 border police officers were interviewed and 714 police officers responded to a survey. Results: The police officers utilize their wide discretionary powers and perceive that they are doing what is best in the situation, trying to listen to the child and to be aware of the child’s needs. Police officers with experience of deportations of unaccompanied, asylum-seeking refugee children were not found to have poorer mental health than police officers with no such experience. Furthermore, high job demand, low decision latitude, low levels of work-related social support, shift work and being single are associated with poor mental health. Coping moderates the association between mental health and the experience of carrying out deportations of unaccompanied, asylum-seeking, refugee children, and the police officers seem to utilize both emotional and problem-solving coping during the same complex deportation process. Implications / conclusions: The general conclusion reached in this thesis is that if police officers are subject to reasonable demands, have high decision latitude, access to work-related social support, and utilize adaptable coping, the deportation work does not seem to affect their mental health. When police officers meet vulnerable people, they utilize their discretionary powers to deal with seemingly contradictory demands, that is, efficiency and dignity. The executive role in the deportations of unaccompanied, asylum-seeking refugee children and the awareness of dealing with a child threatened with deportation might give rise to activation of a sense of protection, safety and security. Discretion might make it possible to act on this sense of protection, safety and security and to combine efficiency and dignity. Further studies, which integrate cognitive and emotional discretion with coping, need to be undertaken.

Abstract:
Major depression is prevalent and impactful in military populations, and not all depressed military personnel access mental health services. However, the rate at which military personnel become depressed, and the likelihood that they will subsequently seek care, remains poorly understood. In this thesis, I present four distinct studies that have helped bridge existing knowledge gaps. First, I used data from a large population-based survey to measure the proportion of depressed Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel who self-reported using mental health services in the past 12 months. Second, I conducted a systematic review to compare the major depression treatment gap uncovered in the first study to the treatment gaps reported in other military organizations. Third, I used data extracted from electronic medical records to measure the rate of new major depression diagnoses in CAF personnel. Results were highly consistent with the treatment gap estimates obtained from the first study, and this helped confirm the quality of the novel electronic medical record data. Fourth, I used data extracted from CAF electronic medical records to measure the temporal association between incident major depression and spinal pain. Because electronic medical records can only identify depression in care-seeking patients, I used quantitative bias analysis methods and the treatment gap estimates obtained from the first study to mitigate the risk of misclassification bias. The results of these four studies suggest that the major depression treatment gap is smaller in the Canadian military than it is elsewhere, but that it could be further reduced with additional mental health literacy interventions. They also suggest that certain sub-groups of CAF personnel may benefit from enhanced prevention or screening efforts, including spinal pain patients and individuals newly posted to administrative cells for severely sick or injured personnel. Finally, these studies highlight the importance of using rigorous epidemiological methods in military major depression research.

Wainwright, Verity. "The pathways to offending and mental health needs of ex-armed forces personnel in prison : a mixed methods study." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2017. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.713625.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Ex-armed forces personnel constitute 3.5% of the prison population in England and Wales but we know little about why some former service personnel end up in prison. Furthermore, understanding what the mental health needs of this group are and how to meet them will inform service delivery and offending prevention strategies. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the mental health needs, and explore the pathways to offending, of ex-armed forces personnel in prison. Methods: A mixed methods design was used. A researcher administered questionnaire collected demographic information; details of pre-service; military experience; circumstances post-armed forces; and a detailed assessment of mental health of 105 male ex-armed forces personnel in prison. Their healthcare and offending records were accessed to record any formal mental health diagnoses and details of previous offending. Two studies made up the qualitative arm of the study: study 1 used semi-structured interviews (n = 20) to explore the pathways to offending of ex-armed forces personnel in prison from their perspective and study 2 employed semi-structured interviews with prisoners (n = 10) and a focus group with professionals (n = 5) to explore the service needs and treatment barriers of former service personnel in prison. Results: Of 105 participants, 40 (38%) screened positively for a current common mental health (CCMH) problem (i.e. depression, anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder [PTSD]) and a high prevalence of alcohol misuse was assessed (n = 59, 56%). Over half of the sample were serving their first custodial sentence (n = 58, 55%). Violent offences were the most common index offence (n = 34, 32%) and the majority of the sample had previous convictions recorded (n = 70, 71%). Participants considered their pathways to offending as complex and incorporating pre-service, military service and post-service factors. Perceived influences on offending included mental health and substance misuse problems, impulsivity and problem solving difficulties. Prison was considered an opportunity to access help and staff having military awareness was thought to encourage help-seeking. However, stigma and previous negative experiences were perceived to make asking for help difficult and the variability in support across the prison estate was considered a barrier to support by all. Discussion: The findings of this study add to the literature and our knowledge of ex-armed forces personnel in prison. The study found that the mental health needs of the group are largely similar to the general prison population but that potential nuances exist regarding alcohol misuse and PTSD. The pathways to offending of the group are complex and are influenced by a number of factors in veterans' lives. Based on the findings of the study implications and directions for future work are discussed.

Hohmann, Maya Danielle. "Psychological Skills of Canadian Military Pilots." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/20058.

Abstract:
For decades, elite athletes have used mental skills training to enhance their performance. The effectiveness of these skills and strategies have been measured, documented and supported in research (e.g., Feltz & Landers, 1983; Vealey, 1994). As the remarkable benefits of mental skills continue to reach an ever-growing community of performers, it is surprising that many military organizations, known for their high standards for performance and little tolerance for error, have yet to take full advantage of this type of training. Canada’s Air Force (CAF), home to a world-renowned pilot training program, now finds itself seeking additional tools to empower pilots to achieve consistent, high quality performance under demanding, high stress conditions. The purpose of this research was to explore the psychological skills used by elite Canadian military pilots to perform successfully in this highly demanding occupation. Sixteen in-depth interviews were conducted with elite Canadian pilots at a CAF base in Saskatchewan. Results indicated that pilots utilized all seven elements of Orlick’s (2008) Wheel of Excellence over three phases of flight: pre-flight preparation, mission execution, and post-flight debriefs. Pilots also drew on elements of the Wheel of Excellence during deployments to combat zones. Effective stress management played an especially important role in this context. Recommendations for future research include mental skills usage and preparation specific to deployment contexts as well as the implementation of a specific, relevant mental skills training program within the existing CAF pilot training program

Rees, Matthew G. "The insistent image, and, The Word : an exploration of the creative force of insistent mental imagery in the writing of short stories." Thesis, Swansea University, 2019. https://cronfa.swan.ac.uk/Record/cronfa48718.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to explore the phenomenon of insistent mental imagery as a creative force in the writing of short stories. The research has two elements. Firstly, the praxis of the creative work: experimental writing functioning as research, leading to an original body of work entitled The Word, a collection of twenty-one short stories amounting to 75,000 words unified by their association with Wales and the Marches and the inclination of their subject matter to the supernatural and the enigmatic. Secondly, this thesis features the gnosis, an essay titled 'The Insistent Image', which explores the creative force of mental imagery in the writing of short stories by noted exponents of the short story form and the influence of such imagery on the candidate's own short fiction. This essay will argue that the importance of imagery in short stories is felt not merely after the ending of a piece of a fiction, but in its formative stages, and tellingly so. This research contributes to our understanding of how and why short stories are written. It significantly widens discussion of the part played by mental imagery in the formative stages of short story writing, hitherto an area of relatively limited discourse and investigation. The author demonstrates the role of received mental imagery as an important driver in the writing of his own short fiction, also citing its influence on other writers and their stories. The case is made that mental imagery has a singular influence on fiction in the short form, consonant with the short story's occupation with moment and glimpse. The case is also made that as a form the short story provides the optimal window in prose fiction for what the author terms the insistent image to crystallize, spawn sibling imagery and shape the course of a text of fiction.

Raggio, Taras NK. "A Narrative Study Focusing on Survivors of Forced Labor Trafficking." ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/7062.

Full text
Abstract:
Throughout history, the media's rendering of slavery depicts vulnerable groups caught in a network of trafficking looking for a better life. Scholars of trafficking cite challenges in understanding the health care needs of domestic forced labor trafficking survivors in the United States. Seminal trafficking findings have shown that variations of trafficking affect the survivors' health after surviving trafficking. Therefore, in this qualitative, narrative inquiry I sought to understand how 8 survivors of forced labor trafficking, ages 25 years and older, described their health following trafficking beyond 5 years. The theory of social constructionism constituted the theoretical foundation, and the salutogenic model of health is the conceptual framework. The research questions for the study focused on understanding how adult survivors described experiences of entering and exiting trafficking, and their physical health, post-trafficking involvement. Criterion sampling facilitated identifying survivors of forced labor trafficking. Semi-structured interviewing guided the survivors' narrative storytelling. For analyzing the narratives, I used Braun and Clarke's Thematic Analysis strategy. The results of the pilot and main study showed that survivors suffer from an array of ongoing cognitive and general health concerns beyond surviving trafficking. The findings suggest that these ongoing health conditions influenced survivors' well-being beyond surviving trafficking. The results of the study may lead those in the medical field (e.g. health administrators) to identify other conditions influencing survivors' health after surviving trafficking.

Kelly, Aisling Catherine Frances. "Refugee mothers' experiences of forced migration and its impact upon family life." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/17189.

Full text
Abstract:
In line with dominant Western discourses regarding mental health, research concerning the wellbeing of forced migrants has tended to take an individualistic, symptom-focused approach. Although not without value and utility, it is argued that this narrow focus has the potential to obscure other important experiences, processes and perspectives relating to forced migration, such as considering how refugees make sense of and respond to their experiences at individual and familial levels. For example, there is no known qualitative research within the UK - and little internationally - which explores how the experience of forced migration impacts upon individual and family wellbeing, from the perspective of parents. Hence the aim of this study was to widen the narrow focus regarding refugee wellbeing. A qualitative approach was adopted, with semi-structured interviews exploring the experience of fleeing home and its impact upon family life in the UK for six refugee mothers. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was selected as a suitable approach to data analysis. Three master themes emerged across participant data, namely: Loss as a constant companion to parenting; A shifting view of the self as a mother, and Taking the good with the bad in family life. A rich account of these master themes and corresponding subthemes is provided. Findings are discussed in relation to existing literature, alongside implications for clinical psychological research and practice, methodological considerations and suggestions for future research.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: In the UK, adult acute mental health nurses use forced touch during physical restraint interventions. Forced touch refers to the quality of the physical force nurses use to restrict patients’ movement. There are few recent UK studies into nurses’ experiences of physical restraint. In particular, the meanings nurses give to forced touch appears to be missing from the literature. Aim: The aim was to explore nurses’ experience of physical restraint procedures and specifically, to inquire into nurses’ experience of forced touch during physical restraint interventions. The research also aimed to provide a critical reflection of the notion of ‘physical restraint’ and ‘forced touch.’ Methods: A Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenological approach was used to collect and analyse data from 14 nurses who engaged in semi-structured interviews with the researcher. Findings: The overarching interpretation of nurses’ experience of physical restraint procedures was lived inconsistency represented in three major themes: lived moral inconsistency, lived knowledge inconsistency and lived care inconsistency. The nurses’ experience of the procedure included their moral struggles with their role in restraint and a perceived lack of care in the aftermath. Their experience of forced touch illuminated their preference for grasping different parts of the patient’s body and their experience of intimacy. They recalled a complex sequence of touches including forced, gentle, protective and compassionate touches. Discussion and implications: Implications for practice include the importance of re-orientating restraint training towards a conceptualisation of touch to connect nurses with the meaning of bodily contact during restraint, and the potential influence upon care. The provision of ward-based trainers will also support nurses more effectively in their restraint practice, and develop the nursing discourse of forced touch. Research implications: Mental health nursing touch demands greater attention because patients are often vulnerable and lack social contact. It is important to understand how nurses learn to touch patients, their reactions to handling the body during physical restraint, and to understand the phenomenon in different cultures. Patients’ perceptions of being touched during physical restraint are essential if the nursing profession is to develop practice in this area.

Using a representative sample of married, active duty Air Force service members (N= 29,254), a theoretical model of community functioning was tested to examine the association between community functioning and three family outcomes (i.e., parent-child relationship satisfaction, family coping, and marital satisfaction). Tests of indirect relationships included measures of psychological resilience, depression, and PTSD, while rank and gender were examined as potential moderators. Results using structural equation modeling indicated that there was a direct, positive relationship between community functioning and all three family outcome variables and an indirect relationship through both psychological resilience and depression. In addition, there was a direct, negative relationship between community functioning and depression, as well as an indirect relationship through psychological resilience. Moderation was supported for rank only. These results demonstrate the importance of community functioning and resilience as they relate to service member’s mental health and family relationships. They suggest a potential framework in which community functioning and resilience may lead to reductions in individual and family risk factors.

Abstract:
This PhD adopts an oral history approach to explore the importance of the Ethiopian coffee Buna ceremony in the lives of the participant Ethiopian forced miwants living in exile in London, UK. A primary objective was to place the personal oral testimonies and narratives within a rigorous research and ethical framework allowing the voice of the individual and community to be central to the process and recording the stories, histories and experiences of this much under-represented group within the field of migration and refugee studies. A central aim was to deepen our understanding of the significance of cultural traditions and rituals in the construction of identity, and to obtain a unique insight into the Ethiopian passion for the ritual 'Buna' ceremony as indicated by the fact that it remains a significant practice in exile. One of the key objectives was to explore how issues of gender, age, identity and well-being are maintained, transformed and challenged in exile within the context of re-settlement and more specifically in relation to the impact of the Buna ceremony on this complex, dynamic and challenging process. Finally, this research aims to explore the mental well-being issues facing the Ethiopian community in the UK and will focus on the use of the cultural Buna ritual as a means of alleviating some of the difficulties and challenges experienced by the participants in their attempts to settle and adapt to life in the UK. This study prioritises the complex and often-neglected issues of well-being and mental health within the Ethiopian community in exile and will contribute to the limited research on the experience of Ethiopian forced migrants in the UK.

Abstract:
Introduction Not all children seeking asylum without parents or other relatives are entitled to residence permits. In the last few years, more than one in four unaccompanied asylum-seeking refugee children have been forced to repatriate, either to their home country or to a transit country. Mostly the children refuse to leave the country voluntarily, and it becomes a forced repatriation. Five actors collaborate in the Swedish child forced repatriation process: social workers, staff at care homes, police officers, Swedish Migration Board officers and legal guardians. When a child is forced to repatriate, the Swedish workers involved must consider two different demands. The first demand requires dignified repatriation, which is incorporated from the European Union’s (EU’s) Return Directive into Swedish Aliens Act. The second demand requires that the repatriation process be conducted efficiently, which means that a higher number of repatriation cases must be processed. The fact that the same professionals have different and seemingly contradictory requirements places high demands on the involved collaborators. Two professionals have a legal responsibility for the children until the last minute before they leave Sweden: social workers and police officers. That makes them key actors in forced repatriation, as they carry most of the responsibility in the process. Further, they often work with children who are afraid what will happen when they return to their home country and often express their fear through powerful emotions. Being responsible and obliged to carry out the government’s decision, despite forcing children to leave a safe country, may evoke negative emotional and mental stress for the professionals involved in forced repatriation. Aim The overall aim of this study is to explore and analyse forced repatriation workers’ collaboration and perceived mental health, with special focus on social workers and police officers in the Swedish context. Materials and methods The study combines a qualitative and quantitative research design in order to shed light at both a deep and general level on forced repatriation. In qualitative substudy I, a qualitative case study methodology was used in one municipality in a middle-sized city in Sweden. The municipality had a contract regarding the reception of unaccompanied asylum-seeking refugee children iv with the Swedish Migration Board. The municipality in focus has a population of more than 100,000 inhabitants. The city in which the data were collected has developed a refugee reception system where unaccompanied asylumseeking refugee children are resettled and await a final decision regarding their permit applications. This situation made it possible to recruit participants who had worked with unaccompanied refugee children without a permit. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a total of 20 social workers, staff at care homes, police officers, Swedish Migration Board officers and legal guardians. A thematic approach was used to analyse the data. In quantitative substudies II, III and IV, a national survey of social workers (n = 380) and police officers (n = 714), with and without experience of forced repatriation, was conducted. The questionnaires included sociodemographic characteristics, the Swedish Demand-Control Questionnaire, Interview Schedule for Social Interaction, Ways of Coping Questionnaire and the 12- item General Mental Health Questionnaire. Factor analysis, correlational analysis, and univariate and multivariable regression models were used to analyse the data. Results The qualitative results in substudy I showed low levels of collaboration among the actors (social workers, staff at care homes, police officers, Swedish Migration Board officers and legal guardians) and the use of different strategies to manage their work tasks. Some of them used a teamwork pattern, showing an understanding of the different roles in forced repatriation, and were willing to compromise for the sake of collaboration. Others tended to isolate themselves from interaction and acted on the basis of personal preference, and some tended to behave sensitively, withdraw and become passive observers rather than active partners in the forced repatriation. The quantitative results in substudy II showed that poorer mental health was associated with working with unaccompanied asylum-seeking refugee children among social workers but not among police officers. Psychological job demand was a significant predictor for mental health among social workers, while psychological job demand, decision latitude and marital status were predictors among police officers. Substudy III showed that both social workers and police officers reported relatively high access to social support. Furthermore, police officers working in forced repatriation with low levels of satisfaction with social interaction and close emotional support increased the odds of psychological disturbances. In substudy IV, social workers used more escape avoidance, distancing and positive-reappraisal coping, whereas police officers used more planful problem solving and self-controlling coping. Additionally, social workers with experience in forced repatriation used more planful problem solving than those without experience. Conclusions In order to create the most dignified forced repatriation, based on human dignity, for unaccompanied asylum-seeking refugee children and with healthy actors, a forced repatriation system needs: overall statutory national guidance, interagency collaboration, actors working within a teamworking pattern, forced repatriation workers with reasonable job demands and decision latitude, with a high level of social support and adaptive coping strategies. The point of departure for an interagency model is that it is impossible to change the circumstances of the asylum process, but it is possible to make the system more functional and better adapted to both the children’s needs and those of the professionals who are set to handle the children. A centre for unaccompanied asylum-seeking refugee children, consisting of all actors involved in the children’s asylum process sitting under the same roof, at the governmental level (Swedish Migration Board, the police authority) and municipality level (social services, board of legal guardians), can meet all requirements.

Abstract:
The study of mental imagery, that form of representation by which the human mind stores and manipulates perceptual information drawn from the environment, is viewed here as a part of a broader approach to representation in cognitive research. In this thesis, an analysis of the properties and functions of representational systems is followed by an examination of the role of imagery as compared to other forms of cognitive representation. After a summary of the theoretical controversies regarding the status attributed to imagery in cognitive functioning, a section provides a detailed analysis of the properties of visual images and their relationships to visual perception. The main part of the thesis is devoted to the role of imagery in psychological activities involved in language processing. A conception of imagery as an instrument for the figuration of meaning is developed through the presentation of findings from a comprehensive series of experiments. First, imagery is analyzed in its relationships with lexical meaning, where findings show that word imagery value depends on the richness of the corresponding concept in figurative semantic features. Secondly, selective activation of figurative features during the processing of sentences describing concrete scenes is investigated. Lastly, there is an account of experiments on comprehension and memory for texts, which stresses for the role of imagery as an activity providing readers with a non-linguistic model for described events and situations, complementing the semantic textbase. This part of the author's research also deals with the issue of individual imagery differences. A review of experimental approaches of imagery related to reasoning and problem solving demonstrates the effectiveness of imagery in the processing of various types of problems. Finally, the role of imagery in the acquisition of motor skills and in the planification of human behavior is discussed. The conclusion places imagery in the theoretical and operational framework of current cognitive research

Rusu, Corneliu. "Risk Factors for Suicidal Behaviour Among Canadian Civilians and Military Personnel: A Recursive Partitioning Approach." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/37371.

Abstract:
Background: Suicidal behaviour is a major public health problem that has not abated over the past decade. Adopting machine learning algorithms that allow for combining risk factors that may increase the predictive accuracy of models of suicide behaviour is one promising avenue toward effective prevention and treatment. Methods: We used Canadian Community Health Survey – Mental Health and Canadian Forces Mental Health Survey to build conditional inference random forests models of suicidal behaviour in Canadian general population and Canadian Armed Forces. We generated risk algorithms for suicidal behaviour in each sample. We performed within- and between-sample validation and reported the corresponding performance metrics. Results: Only a handful of variables were important in predicting suicidal behaviour in Canadian general population and Canadian Armed Forces. Each model’s performance on within-sample validation was satisfactory, with moderate to high sensitivity and high specificity, while the performance on between-sample validation was conditional on the size and heterogeneity of the training sample. Conclusion: Using conditional inference random forest methodology on large nationally representative mental health surveys has the potential of generating models of suicidal behaviour that not only reflect its complex nature, but indicate that the true positive cases are likely to be captured by this approach.

Abstract:
Since 2011, the brutal and complex war in Syria has killed hundreds of thousands of people and created millions of refugees. This dismaying and rapidly unfolding crisis has contributed to the biggest movement of people through the continent since the Second World War. The United Kingdom was one of many destinations for Syrian refugees seeking protection. With this, members of the Syrian community have come together to provide support to newly arrived Syrian refugees. Literature documenting the mental health difficulties that Syrian refugees present with and the range of support provided by these community services remains severely limited. In the context of this gap, the overall aim of this study was to explore the psychological needs with which Syrian refugees in the UK present, as well as the service provision responses to these needs. In order to do this, the research utilised a qualitative methodology and elicited in-depth data from multiple perspectives. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and the inductive thematic analysis generated the following themes: Pre-displacement challenges; Displacement challenges; Post-displacement challenges; Coping and Resilience; Service providers' role and Challenges for contextually appropriate mental health care. The findings of this study suggested that Syrian refugees in the United Kingdom present with wide range of mental health needs, including struggles caused by exposure to brutal conflict, violence, multiple losses and cultural stressors. Findings stated that community services are providing an array of basic and social support; however, mental health needs are unmet. Barriers to accessing mental health resources in the UK have been addressed and the need to develop a multi-layered, culturally sensitive response to Syrian refugees' mental health difficulties has been identified. The Discussion proposed the need to support community services in order to raise awareness, enhance Syrian refugees' psychological well-being and inform the development of culturally sensitive mental health services. With the growing number of Syrian refugees in the UK, this research has provided a contextualisation of this population's culture, religion, resilience, coping strategies and mental health needs from the provider perspective, which is important to improve awareness and identify specific issues contributing to mental health well-being. Recommendations are suggested for developing culturally sensitive mental health services for Syrian refugees, alongside acknowledging limitations of the research and suggestions for further investigation and practice.
