A cleaning protocol that effectively removes fouling from hollow fiber UF systems without excessive use of chemicals, product water or (long) down time is needed. Cross flushing with UF feed water has been reported to increase the net flux of hollow fiber systems by reducing the frequency of backwashing, the consumption of permeate and the system down time. In this study, the flux restoration achieved in a vertical and horizontal UF system employing an intermittent water and water/air cross flush were compared. The flux restoration in the vertical UF system was not improved by the addition of

Currently, almost 70% of the world’s population occupies urban areas. Owing to the high population density in these regions, they are exposed to various types of air pollutants. Fine particle air pollutants (<2.5 μm) can easily invade the human respiratory system, causing health issues. For fine particulate matter filtration, the use of a face mask filter is efficient; however, its use is accompanied by a high-pressure drop, making breathing difficult. The problems occurring in the filtration facilities of water treatment plants, such as mudballs and poor initial filtrate quality are associated with the effectiveness of backwashing. Backwashing with water alone to fluidize the media is an inherently weak cleaning process. The effectiveness of backwashing is significantly improved by the use of air scour simultaneously with subfluidization water wash. <em>Abstract.</em>—A water filtration and ozone disinfection system was installed at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Northeast Fishery Center in Lamar, Pennsylvania to treat a surface water supply that is used to culture sensitive and endangered fish. The treatment system first passes the surface water through drum filters operated with 60-m sieve panels in order to exclude the majority of debris, algae, and organisms larger than the sieve openings. After microscreen filtration, two variable speed pumps are operated in parallel to supply between 400 and 2,400 µmin to the ozone treatment system. Ozone contained within an approximately 95% oxygen feed gas is transferred in to the water (at 0.5–0.7 bar) through a downflow bubble contactor following each pump. The ozonated water is then collected and piped to a 15.1-m3 ozone contact column. The contact column provides approximately 20, 10, or 6.7 min of plug-flow contact time for water flows of 760, 1,500, or 2,270 L/min, respectively. A dissolved ozone probe at the outlet of the ozone contact chamber continuously monitors the dissolved ozone concentration discharged from the contact tank. A proportional- integral-derivative feedback control loop is used to adjust the concentration of ozone generated (and thus added) in order to maintain the dissolved ozone residual discharged from the ozone disinfecting contact tank at a preselected set point (nominally 0.2 mg/L). The water discharged from the ozone disinfecting contact tank then flows by gravity through a second 32.1-m3 contact tank, which provides additional time for the dissolved ozone to decompose. Any dissolved ozone remaining in the water exiting the second contact vessel is air-stripped, along with any large dissolved oxygen supersaturation, as the water flows by gravity through a forced-ventilated cascade column. This treated water then flows by gravity to the fish culture systems. The ozone system was evaluated during a start-up period from March through June of 2002. During this period, the ozonation and filtration system was found to consistently inactivate bacteria and exclude the majority of debris larger than the microscreen openings, even during extreme changes in surface water quality produced by storm events. Design and performance details are provided to offer insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the individual treatment processes.

Many of the rural communities in developing countries are forced to rely on the traditional energy sources such as firewood, dung, and crop residues. These traditional methods are often expensive and/or time-consuming. Today, more than 90% of energy requirements globally are met by burning coal and natural gases with resultant release of harmful pollutants with a serious threat to the environment and human health. Twentieth century has witnessed great challenge to the progress of human development because of scarcity of energy and the principal infrastructure for the development of technology. The chapter reviews the potential of biogas technology to solve the problem of indoor air pollution in rural households. Useful information on the project impact was collected through villages' questionnaires, interviews, field trips, and community engagement workshops, and all the viability demonstrated from rigorous socioeconomic and environmental benefits considerations. The results show that biogas technology is sustainable and provides energy security while combating climate change.

Abstract:
Chitosan, known as a most typical marine biological polymer, has a fruitful capability of biocompatible gel formation. Attempts of chitosan have been made to develop it from the multifaceted viewpoint of separation technology. The physicochemical properties of chitosan containing a lot of hydroxyl groups and reactive amino groups help to build the characteristic polymer networks. The deacetylation degree of chitosan is found as the most influential factor to regulate properties of chitosan hydrogels. The antibacterial activity of the chitosan membrane is one of its notable abilities because of its practical application. The chitosan, its derivatives, and the complex formation with other substances has been used for applications in filtration and membrane separation processes. Adsorption processes based on chitosan have been also developed widely. Moreover, complex of chitosan gel helps to immobilize adsorbent particles. The chitosan membrane immobilizing Prussian-Blue for cesium ion removal from the aqueous phase is one of the leading cases. To elaborate the adsorption behavior on the chitosan immobilizing adsorbent, the isothermal equilibrium and mass transfer characteristics can be discussed. The adsorption process using chitosan-based membranes in combination with filtration in a flow process is advantageous compared with the batch process. More advanced studies of chitosan aerogel and chitosan nanofibers have been proceeded recently, especially for adapting to water purification and air filtration.

The 2nd vane separator is required to drain out droplets formed by the traditional pocket filter during its coalescing function. Further to technological advancements in the water repellency of filter media, as well as leak-free techniques, it is now possible to implement a pocket filter that avoids leaching water droplets downstream. This enables the elimination of the 3rd stage vane separator in the air filtration system. The result is a

Using a prototype laser technology, developed under the sponsorship of the Small Business Innovative Research Program that monitors the concentration of sediment and free water in JP-5 in real-time, the U.S. Navy is proceeding to expand it’s capabilities to monitor sediment and free water in Naval Distillate, NATO Code F-76, under flow conditions. The maximum fuel quality limitations for the U.S. Navy propulsion gas turbines are 40 parts per million (PPM) free water and 2.64 milligra

Abstract It is commonly accepted that fouling degrades severely axial compressor performance. Deposits build up throughout the compressor’s operating life, causing a decrease in its delivery pressure, efficiency and flow capacity. Researchers have also concluded that the presence of wet contaminants and/or high air humidity, plus the quality of air filtration systems, have a far greater impact on fouling rates, than engine specific fouling susceptibility factors [1]. The size of airborne particles ingested into the engine is primarily controlled by the presence of a filtration system. On the o

Many land-based gas turbine applications are conducive to the formation of rust in the supply piping and other components that are upstream of the gas turbine. Many of these applications do not incorporate an effective filtration system for removing rust particles from the secondary air systems thereby resulting in rust deposits. Deposits in the small passages significantly block the secondary flow that ultimately reduces component life. This study investigates the effects of rust deposition in a geometry representative of an axial seal pin between two blades. Initial studies were performed to

Abstract:
The objectives of this project were to predict the performance of naturally and fan-ventilated greenhouses as a function of climate, type of crop, evaporative cooling and greenhouse size, and to estimate the effects of the two cooling systems on yield, quality and disease development in the different crops under study. Background In the competitive field of greenhouse cultivation, growers and designers in both the US and Israel are repeatedly forced to choose between naturally ventilated (NV) and fan ventilated (FV) cooling systems as they expand their ranges in an effort to remain profitable.
