The content of traditional annual reports for publicly owned corporations is undergoing significant change. Whether in the traditional printed form, or increasingly, via web-based formats, annual reports are moving beyond the mere reporting of the fiscal year’s financial results. Corporate annual reports are beginning to include supplemental disclosures on the corporation’s labor and supplier activities environmental activities, governance, social responsibility and, most recently, sustainability. This paper examines the role of human factors in the design of automobiles. A prime objective of our human factors profession is to improve the design of machines, thereby benefiting users in terms of comfort, convenience, operating speeds, accuracy and safety. Although the purpose of an automotive human factors program may be to achieve all of these objectives by improving vehicle design, the mechanisms for doing so probably cannot be discovered by focusing research attention on the vehicle element of the driver/vehicle/road system. In fact, the nonvehicle parts of this system are probably by

Companies in competitive industries find themselves in positions of needing to provide quality goods and services in ways that are efficient in terms of both production and cost. Because of this pressure toward efficiency, the Ford Motor Company, among many others, has had to reorganize its operational strategy. We analyze the ten strategic operational areas in which Ford made improvements, and we then go on to apply this framework to other sectors, including the energy sector. In doing so, we give recommendations for ProRate Energy Inc.’s innovative rate design, called ProRate/CLEP, which can

The Leichhardt Highway is a six hundred-kilometre stretch of sealed inland road that joins the Australian Queensland border town of Goondiwindi with the Capricorn Highway, just south of the Tropic of Capricorn. Named after the young Prussian naturalist Ludwig Leichhardt, part of this roadway follows the route his party took as they crossed northern Australia from Morton Bay (Brisbane) to Port Essington (near Darwin). Ignoring the usual colonial practice of honouring the powerful and aristocratic, Leichhardt named the noteworthy features along this route after his supporters and fellow expediti

Abstract In the 1920’s the Ford Motor Company commissioned architect Albert Kahn to design regional automobile assembly plants. The largest on the West Coast was built in Richmond CA. With over 500,000 square feet of floor space under one roof it is still today the largest single building on San Francisco Bay. During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake this National Historic Building was severely damaged to the point that it could not be occupied. It was used to compare chest deflection and chest acceleration as thoracic injury indicator in blunt impact and belted occupants in front sled impact simulations. Abstract The development of a finite element deformable featureless headform model for vehicle upper interior head impact simulations is described in this paper. The model and the head impact prediction methodology are developed using the FCRASH finite element code developed by Ford Motor Company. The model uses a visco-elastic material law which is implemented in FCRASH to simulate the vinyl skin response during impact. The constitutive parameters of the headform’s skin are calibrated through comparison of head drop simulations at various impact speeds with the corresponding tests. The predic
