Stanley, Amanda Noell. "Church in Black and White: Racially-Integrated Churches and Whites' Explanations for Racial Inequalities." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/33341.

Full text
Abstract:
Research by Emerson and Smith (1999) finds that conservative Protestants tend to blame racial inequalities on individual traits like motivation or ability as opposed to structural constraints such as oppression or discrimination. Emerson and Smith have also established that churches tend to be racially homogenous organizations. The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not members of racially-integrated congregations differ from members of racially-homogenous congregations in their explanations for racial inequalities. I am interested in further exploring interracial relations in the context of United Statesâ Protestant churches, particularly how the level of contact with persons of another race might affect whitesâ perceptions of reasons for racial inequality. I expect to find that individuals who attend racially-homogeneous churches will be less likely to recognize social constraints that may contribute to socioeconomic inequalities between whites and blacks than those who attend racially-integrated churches. In other words, I expect that attending a racially-integrated congregation will have a positive effect on giving structural-level explanations for racial inequality. Using existing data from the 1994 General Social Survey, I analyze the relationship between attendance in a multi-racial congregation and explanations for racial inequalities. The data do not support the hypothesis.

Gibson, Helen Margaret. "The Invisible Whiteness of Being: the place of Whiteness in Women's Discourses in Aotearoa/New Zealand and some implications for Antiracist Education." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Education, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/1050.

Abstract:
This thesis asks two central questions. First, what is the range of racialised discourses that constitute the subjectivities of some Pakeha ('white'/European) women? Second, can an examination of racialised discourses be useful for present social justice and antiracist pedagogy? The research examines and analyses a range of discourses of Whiteness that contribute to the constitution of contemporary Pakeha women as racialised subjects. Central to the thesis is an analysis of dominant discourses and the contemporary challenges that analyses of racism and aspects of identification present in Aotearoa/New Zealand. The study is qualitative and draws on insights from discourse analysis theory, critical Whiteness theory and feminist approaches to theories on racism and 'white' supremacy. The analysis is located in the historicised context of contemporary Aotearoa/New Zealand where a Treaty, Te Tiriti O Waitangi, which was signed by some hapu, the tangata whenua of Aotearoa, and representatives of the British Crown in 1840, underpins current socio-cultural politics of biculturalism. The thesis argues/contends that racialised discourses, in particular various discourses of Whiteness are available to contemporary Pakeha women. The analysis is grounded in both a preliminary focus group and individual interviews of 28 Pakeha women ranging in age from 24 to 86 years, the majority of whom were aged between 40 and 55 years. With few exceptions, participants revealed that they were constituted within discourses of Whiteness through their communication choices and discursive strategies in the interviews in two distinct ways: firstly in their perceptions expressed in their narratives and recollections, and secondly in the discursive forms used in participants' interactions during the focus group and interviews. These 28 women, some of whom had participated in antiracist education such as Treaty of Waitangi workshops, utilised discourses that exposed the pervasiveness and significance of racialised discourses as they attempted express how they learned to be 'white'. Participants maintained and reproduced discourses of Whiteness that had gendered and some class influences contained in their perceptions, talk and significantly in their silences. The analysis shows how remnants of essentialist ideologies of 'race' based in the nineteenth century imperialism are constantly reworked and are seemingly invisible to those constituted within these racialised discourses, apparently giving these outdated representations no chance to fade away. Based on the analysis, critical pedagogies of Whiteness in education that incorporate an epistemic approach are suggested, which have the potential to facilitate Pakeha women's ability to conceptualise their racialised discursive location. As an outcome of this understanding, the thesis maintains that Pakeha will have the capability to strategically reconceptualise their discursive constitution in order to address the complex forms of identity, understanding of difference and representation. Furthermore, these reconceptualisations have the potential to reveal the central relationship between dominant discursive formulations and social norms and structures, a vital constituent in contemporary social justice education.

Abstract:
Nutritional quality and availability is thought to regulate geographic patterns of variability in animal body size due to phenotypic plasticity. The purpose of this study is to determine how vegetation quality, abundance and population density influence white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) body size on a subregional spatial scale at Fort Hood, Texas. Harvest and census records are used to test the hypothesis that white-tailed deer exhibit phenotypic plasticity (e.g. larger body size) in response to differences in vegetation quality and availability. Results from these analyses suggest that forage quality and abundance alone is not a main driver of white-tailed deer body size. Analysis of deer population density (generally) resulted in an inverse relationship with body size. Areas with high quality forage and low population density support larger deer while areas with low quality forage and high density support smaller than average deer. The few exceptions occur in areas exhibiting poor quality forage and low population density or high forage quality and high density. Results from this study suggest that continued overcrowding of deer within isolated areas may eventually lead to efficiency phenotypic conditions producing smaller sized deer. These results could prove useful in interpreting deer population responses to harvest management. For successful local management of deer, studies examining the combined influence of habitat variables (such as forage quality, abundance and population density) on deer health offer managers valuable information needed to establish annual harvest goals and understand deer-habitat relationships relative to carrying capacity.

The prevalence of diabetes along with the perceived impact of sugar on health in general has increased the demand for reduced-sugar and sugar-free baked products. Cakes typically contain large quantities of sucrose which affects not only flavor but also color, volume, and texture. This study evaluated the effect of replacing sucrose in white layer cakes with polydextrose and two artificial sweeteners: sucralose and stevia extract. White layer cakes were made using AACCI Method 10-90.01. Batter properties were evaluated by measuring specific gravity. Volume index was measured using a cake template (AACCI Method 10-91.01). Slice area, number of cells, number of holes, and wall thickness of the crumb were calculated and recorded using C-Cell Cake Imaging system. Control batter made with 135% water had a specific gravity of 0.90 g/cc and a cake volume index of 112. The cakes had a nicely golden brown, shiny surface. The crumb grain was fine with an even cell distribution. Optimum water level and baking time were obtained for each cake variation. Although replacing sucrose with polydextrose had no significant effect on specific gravity (p>0.05), a 25% replacement resulted in a cake with a volume index of 110, 50% with an index of 105, 75% with an index of 103, and 100% with an index of 97. The crumb grain was similar to the control cake. Adding sucralose and stevia yielded similar results, where lower volumes were recorded as polydextrose and sucralose/stevia were increased in the cake formula. Complete replacement of sucrose with polydextrose and sucralose or polydextrose and stevia produced an acceptable volume of cake. The number of holes and wall thickness of the crumb was not significantly different in any cake variation. Therefore, polydextrose and both sucralose and stevia are suitable as sucrose replacers in cakes. Key indexing terms: cakes, polydextrose, stevia, sucralose.

Abstract:
Eggs are a rich source of high-quality proteins as they contain all amino acids necessary for the human body. They also contain all vitamins (except for vitamin C) and many essential minerals. Eggs mainly consist of egg white (albumen) and egg yolk. Egg white is mainly made up of proteins and has excellent foaming properties; it is widely used in the baking and confectionary industries (e.g., cake mixtures, meringue). Dehydration is widely used for the preservation of egg. Dehydrated egg products usually have a shelf life of one year under refrigeration. Spray drying and pan drying are widely used for producing egg powder. The higher drying temperature associated with these drying methods could adversely affect the nutritional value of egg. Freeze drying is well known for its excellent dehydrated product quality. The high cost of operation associated with freeze drying restricts its usage to high value products like coffee. Foam-mat drying can be used for the products that can be foamed to increase the surface area to improve the mass transfer rate. But the higher drying temperature involved in this method is not suitable for producing a high quality dehydrated product. Foam-mat freeze drying is one of the promising methods of drying, which tries to utilize the advantages of both freeze drying and foam-mat drying to produce better quality egg white powder. Preliminary experiments showed that the stability of foams made with egg white alone is not adequate for foam-mat freeze drying. Experiments were thus conducted using different stabilizers (Methyl cellulose, Propylene glycol alginate and Xanthan gum) to optimize foam stability. Bubble size distribution was determined using microscopy to understand foam structure. The results showed that Xanthan gum at 0.125% provide sufficient stability for freeze drying. Experiments were conducted to study foam-mat freeze drying of egg white, in an effort to determine the suitability of this method. The results showed that th

Abstract:
The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) provides HIV-related medical and support services for uninsured and underinsured people living with HIV (PLWH) in the United States. In addition to HIV-related medical care, the program provides medical nutrition therapy and food assistance. The role of nutrition in the health of PLWH is well-documented, especially in resource poor areas; however, the role of medical nutrition therapy and food assistance provided through the RWHAP in resource rich areas is not well documented. This study addressed the association between the nutrition services of food assistance and medical nutrition therapy and the HIV-related health outcomes of viral suppression, retention in care, and CD4 counts. The behavioral model for vulnerable populations was used as the theoretical foundation for this quantitative cross-sectional study. A sample of 428 RWHAP clients was used from the Ryan White Services Report data. Pearson's chi-square was used to examine the association between medical nutrition therapy (MNT) and viral suppression. Findings indicated statistically significant associations between MNT and viral suppression, retention in care and any nutrition service (food assistance, MNT, or both), and MNT and retention in care. Implications for social change include emphasizing the role of nutrition services in HIV-related health outcomes for PLWH in resource rich areas.

Fryxell, John M. "Resource limitation and population ecology of white-eared kob." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/25795.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study I examine the effect of seasonal resource limitation on the behaviour and population dynamics of white-eared kob, Kobus kob leucotis, in the Boma region of the southern Sudan. This population, numbering over 800,000, migrates seasonally between savannah grasslands in areas with low rainfall and ephemerally swamped grasslands in areas with high rainfall. The aims of the study were: (1) to examine whether kob migration tracks ephemeral distributions of food or water resources, (2) to test the hypothesis that the Boma kob population is limited by food availability, (3) to determine if calf production is cued to seasonal peaks in food abundance, and (4) to evaluate the effect of breeding synchrony on lekking behavior and male competition. Seasonal climatic changes produced pronounced changes in the distribution and abundance of both green forage and water supplies. Dry season migration primarily tracked limited supplies of water. Within the dry season range, kob aggregated at high densities (over 1,000 per km²) in low-lying meadows that supported grass re-growth when little green grass was available elsewhere in the ecosystem. However, southerly movements in the wet season were not explainable by the resource hypothesis, since both food and water were widely distributed during the wet season. I suggest that kob may move southward in order to avoid surface flooding during the wet season. Kob mortality during the dry seasons of 1982 and 1983 was considerably higher than estimated mortality during the wet season. Unusual rainfall during the dry season of 1982 provided a "natural experiment" to test the food limitation hypothesis. Adult mortality was significantly lower during the dry season of 1982 than during the more typical dry season of 1983. Calf mortality did not vary significantly between years. Adult mortality rates were related to dry season duration. Dry season mortality was related to sub-maintenance food intake and declining fat reserves. The age structure of the kob population in 1983 suggests that large-scale mortality (ca. 40%) occurred in the 1980 drought that immediately preceded this study. These findings support the food limitation hypothesis. Kob exhibited a 4 month period of calf production during the late wet season, when food availability was highest. As a consequence, females continued lactation through the dry season period of food scarcity. I suggest that kob reproductive phenology may result from an obligatory delay during which females restore their fat reserves prior to calving or selection pressures imposed by predation during the vulnerable post-partum period. Synchronous breeding in the Boma kob was related to increased rates of aggression between males and increased color dimorphism, in comparison to the asynchronous breeding Uganda kob, Kobus kob thomasi. Male aggression served not only to establish dominance relations between males on leks, but also disrupted the mating activities of neighboring males. Young adult males suffered higher age-specific mortality than females, possibly resulting from injuries incurred during strenuous fighting on leks. In order to analyze the age structure of the kob population, I devised a new method for estimating age-specific mortality rates that is free of the restrictive assumptions that underlie most conventional techniques. The proposed method has somewhat greater sampling variation, but is considerably more robust, than two current methods. Moreover, the proposed method permits calculation of age-specific mortality at frequent intervals during periods of population fluctuation and, under some circumstances, population numerical trends may be directly determined from age structure.

Abstract:
Students from underrepresented racial groups experience higher rates of both explicit and subtler forms of racial prejudice and discrimination (Ellis, Powell, Demetriou, Huerta-Bapat, Carmen & Panter, 2019; Harwood et al., 2012; Ray, 2013; Stevens, Liu, & Chen, 2018; Vaccaro, 2010). Cultural competence training may benefit individuals in celebrating culturally-based differences as strengths, cognitively understanding their experience and cognitively empathizing with the experience of others, as well as building skills to better cross-cultural interactions (Glockshuber, 2005; Minami, 2008; Sue et al., 1982; Sue, 2001 Sue & Sue, 2013). This process can be beneficial particularly for White students (Chao, Wei, Good & Flores, 2011), who are prone to higher levels of color-blindness (Fu, 2015; Ryan, Hunt, Weible, Peterson, & Casas, 2007), misinformation around race (Saddlemire, 1996), and a lack of awareness surrounding White privilege (Ray 2013; Schoefplin, 2009). This study adapts a pre-existing one-day allyship training (Ong, Papa, Reveles, Smith, & Domenech Rodríguez, 2018) into a four-week training that walks participants through one-hour per week sessions in which they work towards developing cultural competence focused on race through an online Google forms platform. It utilizes student-acted role plays, reflection questions, and articles and videos to create an interactive experience for students. 49 White students complete the study, and were tested on measures before and after the training. Pre and post-test differences demonstrated significant increases in cultural competence and decreases in color-blindness. Relationships between color-blindness, White privilege, cultural competence, skill employment, training interest and implicit bias are discussed, along with implications and future directions.

Abstract:

This study investigated the static and dynamic physical properties of protein foams and cake batters made from egg white protein and whey protein isolate. A method of rheological evaluation (vane method) initially employed in the study of soils was used to evaluate protein foam rheology. The method was shown to be a reliable method for determining large-scale rheological properties of protein foams. Egg white protein produced foams with higher yield stress at lower concentrations and shorter whip times than did whey protein isolate. Short lifetime decreases in yield stress were observed in foams of higher protein concentration of both types, which were both concentration and whip time dependent. This is considered to be the result of a restructuring of the system as opposed to collapse of the foam. Cakes made from foams of both types showed different performance properties as well. Cakes produced from egg white protein exhibited a minimum concentration of protein (between 5 and 10% w/w of foam) necessary to form a cake of satisfactory volume. Whey protein isolate was unable to form a satisfactory cake regardless of the concentration studied. Phase contrast microscopy, fluorescence microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry studies suggested that the difference in behaviors might be due to a high degree of phase separation between egg white protein and soluble starch that was not seen in whey protein containing systems. This phase separation appears to allow significant matrix development in egg white protein containing cakes that can support the volume of the final product.

Thesis (M. Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering, 2007.
Includes bibliographical references.
In the 21st century, mankind faces problem of energy crisis through depletion of fossil fuels as well as global warning through the production of excessive greenhouse gases. Hence, there is an urgent need to look for new sources of renewable energy or ways to utilize energy more effectively. Solid state lighting (SSL) is a major area of research interest to use energy in a more efficient manner. Early light emitting devices (LEDs) were originally limited their use for low power indication lights. Later research produces high brightness LEDs (HB-LEDs) as well as blue color LEDs. This brings to reality of the entire visible light spectrum. White light is also made possible. As with other technologies, numerous obstacles will have to be surmounted in bringing LEDs from the laboratory to the marketplace. LEDs will also have to compete with established technologies such as incandescent and fluorescent lighting. This thesis will describe the current state of high powered LEDs, examine challenges faced by LEDs and look at future markets. Evaluation in the potential of LEDs for general illumination will be carried out through cost modeling and performance analysis.

Abstract:
White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have considerable impacts on woody and herbaceous vegetation. Many oak-hickory forests in the eastern U.S. are experiencing a lack of oak (Quercus) and hickory (Carya) regeneration, with deer being a likely culprit. Furthermore, few have studied deer use of different herbaceous food plot mixtures. I addressed these gaps in the literature by assessing deer impacts on forest and herbaceous vegetation in southern Illinois. I established 150 paired plots (enclosed and control) in June 2015 and measured 25 habitat variables to assess impacts of deer herbivory from August 2015 to August 2016. Oak seedlings were present more often and in higher numbers within enclosed plots (F1,299 = 6.25, P < 0.050 and F1,387 = 4.50, P < 0.050, respectively). There were no differences in the height of oak seedlings or the presence, number, or height of hickory seedlings in enclosed versus control plots (F1,53 = 0.010, P = 0.938; F1,299 = 0.850, P = 0.357; F1,267 = 1.16, P = 0.282; and F1,15 = 0.030, P = 0.855; respectively). During September-November 2015, I counted and marked fallen acorns within 50 random paired plots; the number of acorns discovered or lost did not differ between enclosed and control plots (F1,94 = 0.310, P = 0.578 and F1,8 = 0.120, P = 0.736, respectively). I suggest managers incorporate potential deer impacts when designing management plans to best encourage oak regeneration. During September-November 2015, I established 16 food plots (half tilled; each 0.05 ha in size), planted to 4 food plot types. I compared Big Tine Buck Brunch, Evolved Harvest Throw & Gro, Antler King No Sweat, and a food plot mixture that I created. I measured deer use via 2 methods: vegetation growth in exclosures versus control (i.e., unfenced) areas and camera traps. Deer used all 4 food plot mixtures (n = 292 – 2,522 pictures/plot over 9 weeks), having a negative impact on mean vegetation height outside of exclosures (F3,1148 = 6.71, P < 0.001). Analysis of camera data indicated that deer did not preferentially use any one food plot mixture over the others (F3,12 = 0.090, P > 0.050). There also was no difference in the proportion of deer pictured in the process of eating within each food plot mixture (F3,12 = 0.592, P > 0.050). I suggest any of these 4 food plot varieties could be planted by a hunter or wildlife manager in the Midwest and observe similar use by deer.

Abstract:
This work is composed by different modes of text framing, according to a postmodern tendency. While weaving his fictionalized memories, the author presents and evaluates the performance of CEP 20.000 which he has helped founding, in 1990, and coordinates till this day. His perspective is that of the spectator of the town life, a kind of flâneur in the cultural scenery, where he gathers up the subjects for his writing produced in interchange with a net of friends. The first person of speech intends to be fragile since it is meant as an experience of textuality intertwined by a plurality of voices and viewpoints. The chapters are built in blocs alternating with a miscellany of chronicles, drawings, e-mails, letters, intervews, news, photographs, poems, short stories and fragments of other types of texts, published or not. The choice and articulation of this material was planned to establish a dialogue with the accademic discourse. The goal of the essay is to propose a writing strategy adequate to a broad understanding of the history of the present.

Increasing rates of skill obsolescence amongst white-collar workers resulting from rapid technological and organizational shifts within firms, coupled with an insufficient supply of workers proficient in technical areas such as software engineering and data science, has meant that firms are beginning to look to reskilling their incumbent workers as a means of filling skill gaps. This aim of this study was to examine the process and outcomes of efforts made by a US-based diversified global insurance company between 2016 and 2018 to reskill and reassign approximately 300 employees in the face of changing technological and market demands. More specifically, this involved running an immersive coding program for employees with little or no prior coding experience, with the ultimate aim of finding them new job roles in technical areas such as software engineering and data science. Quantitative analysis of longitudinal employee data, combined with qualitative interviews with program participants and administrators of the program, was used to assess the wide-ranging impacts that program had both on the firm and its workforce. Results suggest that the firm benefitted immensely from the retention of business-related knowledge and a low turnover rate of program graduates compared to externally hired software engineers. The majority of program participants also benefited from receiving free technical skills training, resulting in improved career prospects, however inefficiencies in the onboarding process for placing code school graduates on to new technical teams meant that some unfortunate participants were unfairly disadvantaged. Overall, this study provides encouraging evidence for the potential for white-collar reskilling programs to bring about positive outcomes for both firms and their workers, with several lessons learned for future implementations of similar programs.

Ruppell, Julia Cleverly. "Ecology of White-Cheeked Crested Gibbons in Laos." PDXScholar, 2013. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/1007.

Full text
Abstract:
The endangered white-cheeked crested gibbon (Nomascus leucogenys), native to Laos, Vietnam, and perhaps China, remains little known and highly threatened. I studied seasonal variation in the diet, activity budget, and ranging behavior of three groups of white-cheeked crested gibbons in Nam Kading National Protected Area, Bolikhamxay Province, Laos, over 12 months in wet seasonal evergreen forest. Crested gibbons (Nomascus spp.) are speculated to be more folivorous than other gibbons, but this has never been confirmed because of the paucity of fieldwork on the genus. I studied diet in relation to forest seasonality to determine the contribution of leaves to the diet over an annual cycle. Although leaves were the main dietary item throughout the year (53-85% of monthly diet), gibbons substantially increased their consumption of fruit during periods when it was most abundant in the forest. Because fruit is a calorically rich source of food, gibbons seek fruit when it is abundant and obtained easily. Young leaf consumption increased when they did not have access to fruit, indicating that their diet is flexible but strongly dependent on seasonal availability of resources. In addition, rainfall had a negative association with fruit abundance and fruit in diet. Activity budgets are an important aspect of a species' ecology because they are directly related to home range use, energy allocation, and diet, but they have never before been studied in gibbons (Nomascus spp.) of the rainy, mountainous, forests of Laos. Annually, the three groups that I studied spent nearly equal amounts of time resting (30%), feeding (33%), and traveling (35%), but only a small amount of time singing (2%). However, the proportion of time allocated to different activities showed significant seasonal variation associated with rainfall and diet, and correlated with home range use. Gibbons increased traveling time and decreased feeding time when they ate more fruit, and they decreased traveling time and increased feeding time when they ate more leaves. When the gibbons spent more of their time traveling, they also had longer day range lengths, and used a higher percentage of their total home range. Moreover, when rainfall was high, the gibbons decreased traveling time and increased time resting and feeding. Average home range size was 37.9 hectares and daily average distance over which the gibbons ranged over the 12 month study was 1.48 km per day. Differences existed among the three groups. Overall, white-cheeked crested gibbons have a home range similar in size or larger than frugivorous gibbons, and larger than the folivorous siamang. Ranging was highly seasonal with shorter day ranges during times of low fruit availability and consumption. During times of high fruit availability and low rainfall, the gibbons took on an energy maximizing strategy where they maintained large home ranges, traveled longer distances and consumed larger quantities of fruit. Gibbons and their habitat in Laos have faced continuous threats over the past 10 years because of large scale development projects and subsistence hunting. Given the highly threatened status of the species in Vietnam and China, the Lao population is certainly the world's largest and the best hope for conservation of behavioral, ecological, and genetic diversity. Resources for conserving species in the country are very limited, and wildlife populations are already greatly fragmented. I describe the current conservation issues and based on the dietary and ranging information that I collected, recommend important conservation measures to safeguard the remaining populations of endangered gibbons from extinction.

Abstract:
Within the past decades, extensive research has been focusing on developing electroluminescent technologies (OLED and LEC). Especially, a lot of effort has been dedicated to the search a efficient phosphorescent materials with highly tuneable emission maxima bearing l a te transition metal atoms. Emitters such as cyclometalated idirium complexes have been proven to be very successful in this regards exhibiting colours from blue to red and being successfully applied in electroluminescent technologies. However, in order to decrease the manufacturing cost of these technologies, a single-centre white emitting material is highly desirable. In this context, this work investigates a new family of complexes bearing three different bidentate ligands known as tris-heteroleptic complexes to develop an emitter with a broad emission profile that would result in a white colour. Eighteen new tris-heteroleptic complexes with unprecedented ligand configurations have been synthesised by mixing different kind of ligand such as phenylpyridines (ppy), phenylpyrazo les (ppz) and phenylimidazoles (pim). This resulted in significant emission broadening with FWHM values up to nearly 6000 em- 1.

Bertò, Giulia. "Supervised Learning for White Matter Bundle Segmentation." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Trento, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/11572/264971.

Full text
Abstract:
Accurate delineation of anatomical structures in the white matter of the human brain is of paramount importance for multiple applications, such as neurosurgical planning, characterization of neurological disorders, and connectomic studies. Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging (dMRI) techniques can provide, in-vivo, a mathematical representation of thousands of fibers composing such anatomical structures, in the form of 3D polylines called streamlines. Given this representation, a task of invaluable interest is known as white matter bundle segmentation, whose aim is to virtually group together streamlines sharing a similar pathway into anatomically meaningful structures, called white matter bundles. Obtaining a good and reliable bundle segmentation is however not trivial, mainly because of the intrinsic complexity of the data. Most of the current methods for bundle segmentation require extensive neuroanatomical knowledge, are time consuming, or are not able to adapt to different data settings. To overcome these limitations, the main goal of this thesis is to develop a new automatic method for accurate white matter bundle segmentation, by exploiting, combining and extending multiple up-to-date supervised learning techniques. The main contribution of the project is the development of a novel streamline-based bundle segmentation method based on binary linear classification, which simultaneously combines information from atlases, bundle geometries, and connectivity patterns. We prove that the proposed method reaches unprecedented quality of segmentation, and that is robust to a multitude of diverse settings, such as when there are differences in bundle size, tracking algorithm, and/or quality of dMRI data. In addition, we show that some of the state-of-the-art bundle segmentation methods are deeply affected by a geometrical property of the shape of the bundles to be segmented, their fractal dimension. Important factors involved in the task of streamline classification are: (i) the need for an effective streamline distance function and (ii) the definition of a proper feature space. To this end, we compare some of the most common streamline distance functions available in the literature and we provide some guidelines on their practical use for the task of supervised bundle segmentation. Moreover, we investigate the possibility to include, in a streamline-based segmentation method, additional information to the typically employed streamline distance measure. Specifically, we provide evidence that considering additional anatomical information regarding the cortical terminations of the streamlines and their proximity to specific Regions of Interest (ROIs) helps to improve the results of bundle segmentation. Lastly, significant attention is paid to reproducibility in neuroscience. Following the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) Data Principles, we have integrated our pipelines of analysis into an online open platform devoted to promoting reproducibility of scientific results and to facilitating knowledge discovery.

Abstract:

Among American First Ladies, one presidential wife in particular consistently ranks among one of the most influential women to hold the office. Eleanor Roosevelt’s precedent-setting tenure in the White House established a lasting legacy that influenced many of the women who followed her. Two of these First Ladies, Betty Ford and Rosalynn Carter, are often overlooked in comparative studies of Eleanor Roosevelt with other presidential wives. Scholars typically highlight Hillary Rodham Clinton or Lady Bird Johnson, neglecting the First Ladyships of Ford and Carter. These two women, however, both pointed to Eleanor Roosevelt as an inspiration for their approach to the office. Both Betty Ford and Rosalynn Carter incorporated three main components of Eleanor Roosevelt’s impressive legacy into their tenures as First Lady of the United States: an ever-expanding public role, increased independence, and launching initiatives concerned with social welfare to improve the lives of their fellow Americans. All of these actions can be traced back to Roosevelt’s innovative First Ladyship and their appearance in the successive Ford and Carter administrations highlight the interconnectedness of all three First Ladies and their considerable impact on their country both during and after their time in the White House

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to examine how food deprivation effects food-related and other behavioural systems of red junglefowl (Gallus gallus) and the domesticated White Leghorn layers. If an animal is denied to perform their natural behaviours, like eating, sleeping or preening, the motivation for the behaviour can increase. Behavioural systems may interact and motivation to perform behaviours may be influenced. After being deprived of a certain need the reaction can become exaggerated or abnormal. Food deprivation is often used in ethology research to motivate animals. The hypothesis in this study was that the chickens would become affected by the food deprivation and reallocate their behaviours. They would get more stressed and frustrated. Domestication effects and sex differences were explored. The birds were tested in four standardized behavioural tests; food consumption test, general behavioural test, open field test and novel object test. The results showed that they foraged and explored more, had less comfort behaviours, and less perching the longer they had been without food. They did not show a higher degree of frustration, stress or aggressive behaviours. There were domestication effects, where the Leghorns seem to have lost some of their ability to respond adaptively to food shortage. Differences between the sexes were found, where the females foraged more and the males were more stressed. The conclusion was that the birds do not get more stressed when food deprived, but they forage and explore more which is a desirable effect of food deprivation used in ethology research.

Harris, Johnathan. "Impacts of the Invasive White Perch on the Fish Assemblage of Kerr Reservoir, Virginia." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32914.

Full text
Abstract:
The white perch (Morone americana) is a highly successful invader of freshwater systems, with negative consequences to some resident fishes. White perch are ovivores and may prey upon as well as compete with juvenile sportfishes. Since 1988, an introduced population of white perch has proliferated in the 19,790-ha Kerr Reservoir, NC-VA, potentially threatening popular sport fisheries for largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), crappie (Pomoxis spp.), and self-sustaining striped bass (Morone saxatilis). Trophic relationships between white perch and resident sportfish were examined in the Kerr Reservoir system to determine the white perchâ s impact on them. Striped bass eggs were found in the stomach contents of white perch collected from the Roanoke River during their concurrent spawning runs in May, and at times egg predation was intense (frequency of egg occurrence in white perch individuals up to 100 %). However, modeling simulations indicated that observed densities of white perch in the Roanoke River during the peak spawning period of striped bass (May) were too low to have a substantial effect on striped bass recruitment. Crappie eggs were found in the diets of white perch collected from Kerr Reservoir during April, but the significance of this predation was not determined. Trophic overlap (Schoenerâ s Index) was high (> 0.5) between age-0 white perch and age-0 crappie, largemouth bass, and striped bass in June, but only remained high between white perch and crappie in the remainder of the growing season (July â September). After June, largemouth and striped bass were primarily piscivorous, whereas white perch and crappie remained primarily invertivorous. Trophic overlap was high between adult white perch and adult crappie (> 0.6), but not between white perch and any other species of adult sportfish. The utilization of white perch by adult piscivores (Ictalurids, Pomoxis spp., Moronids, and Percids) as a food source was low (< 2% of diets by weight). Piscivorous sportfish primarily ate clupeids, which are highly abundant in Kerr Reservoir. Analysis of sportfish performance before (1974 â 1987) versus after (1996 â 2005) white perch establishment indicated no change in abundance and growth of striped bass and largemouth bass. Performance data for crappie prior to white perch introductions were unavailable, but observed egg predation by and trophic overlap with white perch suggests that crappie have the highest potential to suffer deleterious interactions with the white perch. Abundance of white bass has significantly declined in years since white perch introductions. Future research in Kerr Reservoir should concentrate on interactions between white perch and these two species.

This work presents a technological opportunity to make efficient use of the spectrum and at the same time shows its importance to provide digital inclusion in Brazil. The method- ology is applied in a case study investigating the area of Cear ́a, a Brazilian state, where a significant amount of spectrum that can be unleashed via TV White Space exploitation is relevant to be considered, due to its geographic and economical conditions. These white spaces can fill up some holes in the state that do not present any mobile coverage and improve the telecommunication services in other areas. The technology concept, world regulation situation and possible applications using the resource are described throughout this work. The main purpose is to use TV White Spaces together with the LTE band, as a way to soften part of the poor coverage services of 3G, 4G.

Acosta, Sanchez David. "White food-type sorghum in direct-expansion extrusion applications." Thesis, Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/515.

Full text
Abstract:
Whole sorghum kernels were directly processed into whole grain snacks with acceptable texture. Extrudates made from whole sorghum had a harder gritty texture than those made from decorticated materials. Extrusion of whole sorghum provides significant savings in processing: there are no dry matter losses; no equipment or energy is required for decortication or milling; the extruder consumes less power and processes more material per time unit. In addition, the extruder utilized is a simple adiabiatic, friction extruder of relatively low cost. Grinding whole sorghum and removing fines did not improve product expansion during extrusion but altered the gritty pieces in the extrudates. The best products were obtained when whole sorghum (ground or un-ground) was extruded at 14% moisture. The whole sorghum extrudates had larger bubbles with thick cell walls, which made extrudates more crunchy. Decortication of sorghum improved extrusion performance and products by allowing adequate formation and retention of air cells. Decortication to remove 20% of the original sorghum weight was enough to produce extrudates with characteristics comparable to those made from commercial yellow corn meal. Sorghum milled fractions with composition and particle size distribution similar to corn meal produced extrudates with higher expansion, lower bulk density and similar texture. In addition, sorghum extrudates were rated equal to corn meal extrudates by a taste panel for appearance, flavor, texture and overall characteristics. Extrudates made from polished rice were less expanded and whiter than extrudates made from sorghum. When processed under similar conditions, sorghum extrusion required more energy than corn meal extrusion. However, whole sorghum extrusion required less energy than corn meal extrusion. Unground sorghum samples (decorticated or non-decorticated) produced harder extrudates compared to those made from ground raw material. White sorghum is a feasible option for snack extrusion because of its versatility, product characteristics, cost and processing properties.

Abstract:
E-commerce is a growing market for selling gods and digital images are often used to display the product. However, there is a problem when the color of the object does not match the reality. This can lead to a dissatisfaction of the customer and a return of the product. Returned goods causes a significant loss in revenue for the suppliers. One reason for untruthful rendering of colors in images is due to different temperatures, or colors, of the illumination sources lighting the scene and the object. This effect can be reduced by a method called white balance. In this thesis, an algorithm based on the technique in Hsu et al. was implemented for a more truthful rendering of images of clothes and toys used in e-commerce. The algorithm removes unwanted color casts induced in the image from two different illumination sources. The thesis also marks important details missing in aforementioned paper as well as some drawbacks of the proposed technique, such as high processing time.

Abstract:
In recent years, the rapid growth in wireless data traffic has posed not only unique opportunities but also great challenges for the wireless industry. In order to meet the growing demand without excessive cost or energy consumption, one feasible option for the operators is to acquire more spectrum for wireless communication. Unlike the lengthy allocation process for exclusive spectrum licenses, secondary spectrum access is deemed as a flexible alternative to obtain additional spectrum at low cost. In particular, the VHF/UHF TV band, so called ’TV White Space’, is considered as the most promising candidate for secondary access thanks to its well defined primary usage and favorable propagation characteristic for building penetration and wide area coverage. Therefore, secondary access in the TV band has been extensively studied by both academic and industry. Most of the research have focused on the detection of ’spectrum holes’ with sensing technologies, while a few others have provided high level analysis of the potential of TV white space with simplistic secondary interference model for single secondary user. Only A limited number of studies have investigated aggregate interference from multiple secondary users, but even these studies have ignored the adjacent channel interference from secondary users close to the TV receivers. Thus, in this thesis we first concentrate on examining the effect of harmful interference on TV reception from short range devices transmitting on adjacent channels, and model the accumulative effect of multi-channel interferences observed in the measurement. Then the basic methodology for evaluating the potential of TV white space is developed in the second part of the thesis, where we propose a new analytical approach for regulating the secondary transmit power that significantly outperforms the existing method in the regulatory framework. Finally, we combine the aggregate interference model and the basic regulation methodology to extend the analysis from single user to multiple user case, first with only users transmitting on different adjacent TV channels and later also including users transmitting on co-channels. Our performance evaluation have shown that the effect of adjacent channel interference at close distance is far from negligible and the accumulative effect of multi-channel interferences has substantial impact on the scalability of a secondary system. In fact, the adjacent channel interference proves to be the primary limiting factor of the TV white space availability for low power short range systems. Nonetheless, because the proposed approach can adapt to varying environmental conditions and consequently utilize the spectrum reuse opportunity more efficiently than existing frameworks, we can still note considerable amount of TV white space available for short range secondary devices.
