Full textThe pursuit for a greater competitiveness has brought changes in modern production, where there is an ongoing transition from labour-dependent production to an increased automation in production plants. The increase of automation and the advance of technology has meant that production equipment has become more sophisticated and complicated to maintain. The changes have brought greater demands on the dependability of production equipment in order to meet customer requirements and also maintain competitiveness. The execution of an effective maintenance has become an important factor in order to achieve a dependable production plant. Arla Foods Jönköping’s dairy plant works with both operator and specialist maintenance, where measurement on equipment are carried out and preventive maintenance plan has been developed. On the other hand, the empty-packaging-supplying system, which supplies empty cargo carriers to the packaging machines and to the cold storage warehouse, lacks a maintenance plan and therefore only emergency maintenance work are applied. The purpose of this study has been to develop a preventive maintenance plan for the empty-packaging-supplying system of rolltainers. This has taken alongside an interference analysis where interferences were mapped and then a proposal for action was devised. All data was obtained in Arla Foods Jönköping’s dairy plant, where the methods that were used are observations, interviews, workshops and document studies. Literature studies, that treats basic maintenance principles and Total Productive Management, TPM, where also performed in order to provide a theoretical basis for the study. The analysis covers a compilation of interferences, through a Pareto chart, where those interferences which affected the supplying system most could be identified. The analysis showed that 49,3 percent of all the interferences was due to rolltainers that got stuck on curves and defective rolltainers that went through controls and caused a stop of the supplying system. An analysis was also made of the current maintenance work and how the lack of a maintenance plan affects the supplying system. Based on the analysis, a proposal for action was devised for the two most prevalent interferences and a preventive maintenance plan for the supplying system was developed. With the help of literature studies, maintenance staffs competencies and the suppliers maintenance guide, a preventive maintenance plan was developed, where great emphasis was put on to not introduce an alien working method. Since the whole production works with RIS-boards and the personnel are familiar with them, it was viewed as a suitable working method. The maintenance plan consists of scorecards, RIS-cards, with instructions for each area, and will also serve as a checklist for the maintenance work to take place at the right time. In order for the maintenance work to be fulfilled a delegation of responsibility for the maintenance work has been made. The RIS-boards enables error reports to be made in a proper way, delegate responsibility and enables documentations of performed reparations. Furthermore, Arla Foods Jönköping is recommended to integrate the newly developed maintenance plan with SAP, which is an enterprise resource planning software, which the maintenance department is currently working with to perform preventive maintenance on the packaging machines. Also, an implementation of TPM should be applied throughout the whole organization, where the newly developed maintenance plan is considered to be a basis for achieving interference-free production through a structured approach and create a commitment in the organization to work together for continuous improvement efforts. In the long term, consideration should be given to reconstruct the rolltainer tracks and create more direct transportation tracks to avoid curves and the interferences they create.

Full textDuring the writers literature study they received a clearer perception of the problematics that is embossed in the Railway industry. Several larger reorganisations had created an industry with unclear responsibilities and unclear roles resulting in several protracted litigations between the client and the contractor. The mood was described as bleak and compromises between the operators did not occur by the necessary means, the operators mostly considered only their own activities in the industry. A change had to be done. This report is limited to three key operators with connections to the maintenance on the railway. These key operators are: the client, the contractor and the transport operator. The report focuses on the all too reoccurring corrective maintenance those results in traffic-disturbances and traffic-stops. In the same time an insight occurred that a large need for implementing a preventive maintenance on a larger scale existed. Considering the knowledge the writers had acquired during their education about preventive maintenance, it slightly shocked them to see how the railway maintenance was carried out on the railway. Different operators in different organisations on the railway are dependant of each other to accomplish a functional railway, thus an increased interaction between the operators is achievable. Dialogue and interaction were two keywords that often reoccurred and the idea to, by an increased dialogue, introduce routines for an extended interaction was considered being a first step to solving the issues that exists on the railway. During the writers work on this report, they discovered that the railway industry is an industry under renewal. A process for improvement is currently going on, in the form of purer roles which was carried on after a decision was made by the Parliament of Sweden. The Forum for Accessibility (FFF) is a forum, which had their first meeting in April this year, they are currently working on increasing the interaction on the railway. In this forum the client, contractors and transport operators form a dialogue to achieve this increased interaction between one and another. A lot has happened during the writers work on this report and they have developed an interaction-strategy in the best way possible to make this strategy applicable considering the current conditions on the railway today.

Full textThe thesis project was performed at Scania Industrial Maintenance. Historically, the intervals of the preventive maintenance for the production equipment have been determined based on calendar dates. As the calendar date does not take the actual use of the production equipment into account the maintenance is not adapted to this use. This could lead to either too much or too little maintenance is being performed in relation to the use of the equipment. When too much maintenance is performed, work and replacement of spare parts are performed when not needed which brings unnecessary costs for the company. At the same time, too little maintenance will instead lead to breakdowns when the machines are planned to be used, which could be very costly for the company. Because of this, Scania now wishes to proceed to determine the intervals for the preventive maintenance based on the production volume. The objective of the work was to develop methods and processes that describe how Scania's factories in Södertälje, within the framework of the Future Powertrain Program (FPP), will transition to a maintenance interval based on volume. These methods shall then be tested in two pilots, one pilot at Scania's axle and gearbox assembly and the other pilot at Scania's engine processing. To increase the project group's knowledge of subjects covered by the project, literature studies were carried out on reports, articles and in fact books. Literature studies were also performed during the course of the work on subjects that were not covered by the work's initial literature study. In addition to the literature study, a document study was also performed on the company's internal documents and included, among other things, the preparation process and instructions for Maximo, which is the maintenance system used at Scania. The project group also conducted interviews with staff at Scania IM and Scania during the work as the project members wanted to gain insight into the business and the existing ways of work. By delimiting the work, the focus has been on realizing the theory on a smaller area to investigate whether this transition is possible to implement. The selected pilot areas located at DT and DM were studied with regards to both organization and production equipment. These studies, together with the project groups literature study and document study, were then used when developing the methods. The methods developed within the project were tested in pilots on selected areas and equipment. The pilots that were carried out within the project were successful and the aim for Scania now is not to return to calendar-based maintenance but instead expand the use of themethods developed by this project. The result of this work is that a more accurate maintenance will be performed in relation to the calendar-based maintenance. The project group could also state that the safety in the workshops could be increased when applying the project's developed methods. This is because the maintenance performed on e.g. emergency stops or other safety functions are performed in relation to the use of the equipment. The methods developed within the project takes into account whether the equipment is covered by warranty or regulatory requirements. They also take into account the length of the PM and whether the PM includes routes, operator maintenance, periodic exchanges or security. These factors decides which measures needs to be taken on the calendar-controlled and volume-based PM, which results in an adapted and improved PM plan.

Full textA company can use different strategies when performing maintenance. One strategy is corrective maintenance where maintenance is carried out after a failure has occurred. Another strategy is preventive maintenance. A combination of the two is often used. The preventive maintenance can be predetermined or condition based. Advantages with the condition based maintenance are e.g. that the replacement of parts can be planned according to observations indicating there’s an increasing risk of failure. When choosing preventive maintenance, the RCM method can be used to determine risk of failure modes and the cause of function failures. Decisions regarding the preventive maintenance should be based on knowledge in new techniques, history of failures and the equipment and competence available. Volvo Cars in Skövde is doing more or less the same preventive maintenance on machine tools regardless of whether it’s a new or old machine. The company is using condition based maintenance on some of the components and units. Mostly it consists of human inspections, a subjective control of the machine’s condition, and spindle vibration analysis. Through interviews it has been determined that new techniques are rarely implemented and that the decided maintenance plan for a machine is rarely changed. The company is aware of the development of new techniques for condition based maintenance and wants to investigate whether it is appropriate to evolve their condition based maintenance on machine tools. The techniques further investigated are measurement with Ball bar, monitoring of process parameters and geometrical verification. To make accurate decisions regarding the implementation of new techniques, a data collection of the history of frequent failures was done. To limit the amount of data a five year old processing line was studied. Data from the maintenance system Maximo was sorted by long failures from the recent years and by prioritizing with the Pareto principle it showed the recurring failures of ball screws. The component do have a condition based maintenance activity today, there is an inspection once a year. However, the inspection is rarely able to predict or find a failure on the ball screw. Four out of twenty-seven ball screws with fault have been changed after inspection over the last five years. By mapping the components failures on fifteen machine tools and when preventive maintenance has been done, several options for improvements were found. The cost of the replacement of a ball screw when a failure has already occurred is as much as ten times the cost of replacement before failure. This is caused by cost of scrap and long down time. A new, improved preventive maintenance task is therefore highly justified. The motif is both reducing the scrap cost related to failure and with increased availability. The company is recommended an investment in Ball bar as a new method for condition based maintenance. It should be used to increase the objective control of the mechanical parts of a machine tool. The method is not totally new for the company and relatively easy to implement. The current subjective control on the machine tools should be revised to increase the probability of finding degradation of functions. Today the activity takes rather long time and has therefore not been done in time, it should be shorter. The company is also recommended to investigate new methods for preventive maintenance continually. Today there is no employee with that mission and to evolve maintenance, the company has to be updated on new techniques.
