Full textThe pursuit for a greater competitiveness has brought changes in modern production, where there is an ongoing transition from labour-dependent production to an increased automation in production plants. The increase of automation and the advance of technology has meant that production equipment has become more sophisticated and complicated to maintain. The changes have brought greater demands on the dependability of production equipment in order to meet customer requirements and also maintain competitiveness. The execution of an effective maintenance has become an important factor in order to achieve a dependable production plant. Arla Foods Jönköping’s dairy plant works with both operator and specialist maintenance, where measurement on equipment are carried out and preventive maintenance plan has been developed. On the other hand, the empty-packaging-supplying system, which supplies empty cargo carriers to the packaging machines and to the cold storage warehouse, lacks a maintenance plan and therefore only emergency maintenance work are applied. The purpose of this study has been to develop a preventive maintenance plan for the empty-packaging-supplying system of rolltainers. This has taken alongside an interference analysis where interferences were mapped and then a proposal for action was devised. All data was obtained in Arla Foods Jönköping’s dairy plant, where the methods that were used are observations, interviews, workshops and document studies. Literature studies, that treats basic maintenance principles and Total Productive Management, TPM, where also performed in order to provide a theoretical basis for the study. The analysis covers a compilation of interferences, through a Pareto chart, where those interferences which affected the supplying system most could be identified. The analysis showed that 49,3 percent of all the interferences was due to rolltainers that got stuck on curves and defective rolltainers that went through controls and caused a stop of the supplying system. An analysis was also made of the current maintenance work and how the lack of a maintenance plan affects the supplying system. Based on the analysis, a proposal for action was devised for the two most prevalent interferences and a preventive maintenance plan for the supplying system was developed. With the help of literature studies, maintenance staffs competencies and the suppliers maintenance guide, a preventive maintenance plan was developed, where great emphasis was put on to not introduce an alien working method. Since the whole production works with RIS-boards and the personnel are familiar with them, it was viewed as a suitable working method. The maintenance plan consists of scorecards, RIS-cards, with instructions for each area, and will also serve as a checklist for the maintenance work to take place at the right time. In order for the maintenance work to be fulfilled a delegation of responsibility for the maintenance work has been made. The RIS-boards enables error reports to be made in a proper way, delegate responsibility and enables documentations of performed reparations. Furthermore, Arla Foods Jönköping is recommended to integrate the newly developed maintenance plan with SAP, which is an enterprise resource planning software, which the maintenance department is currently working with to perform preventive maintenance on the packaging machines. Also, an implementation of TPM should be applied throughout the whole organization, where the newly developed maintenance plan is considered to be a basis for achieving interference-free production through a structured approach and create a commitment in the organization to work together for continuous improvement efforts. In the long term, consideration should be given to reconstruct the rolltainer tracks and create more direct transportation tracks to avoid curves and the interferences they create.

Full textDuring the writers literature study they received a clearer perception of the problematics that is embossed in the Railway industry. Several larger reorganisations had created an industry with unclear responsibilities and unclear roles resulting in several protracted litigations between the client and the contractor. The mood was described as bleak and compromises between the operators did not occur by the necessary means, the operators mostly considered only their own activities in the industry. A change had to be done. This report is limited to three key operators with connections to the maintenance on the railway. These key operators are: the client, the contractor and the transport operator. The report focuses on the all too reoccurring corrective maintenance those results in traffic-disturbances and traffic-stops. In the same time an insight occurred that a large need for implementing a preventive maintenance on a larger scale existed. Considering the knowledge the writers had acquired during their education about preventive maintenance, it slightly shocked them to see how the railway maintenance was carried out on the railway. Different operators in different organisations on the railway are dependant of each other to accomplish a functional railway, thus an increased interaction between the operators is achievable. Dialogue and interaction were two keywords that often reoccurred and the idea to, by an increased dialogue, introduce routines for an extended interaction was considered being a first step to solving the issues that exists on the railway. During the writers work on this report, they discovered that the railway industry is an industry under renewal. A process for improvement is currently going on, in the form of purer roles which was carried on after a decision was made by the Parliament of Sweden. The Forum for Accessibility (FFF) is a forum, which had their first meeting in April this year, they are currently working on increasing the interaction on the railway. In this forum the client, contractors and transport operators form a dialogue to achieve this increased interaction between one and another. A lot has happened during the writers work on this report and they have developed an interaction-strategy in the best way possible to make this strategy applicable considering the current conditions on the railway today.

Full textThe thesis project was performed at Scania Industrial Maintenance. Historically, the intervals of the preventive maintenance for the production equipment have been determined based on calendar dates. As the calendar date does not take the actual use of the production equipment into account the maintenance is not adapted to this use. This could lead to either too much or too little maintenance is being performed in relation to the use of the equipment. When too much maintenance is performed, work and replacement of spare parts are performed when not needed which brings unnecessary costs for the company. At the same time, too little maintenance will instead lead to breakdowns when the machines are planned to be used, which could be very costly for the company. Because of this, Scania now wishes to proceed to determine the intervals for the preventive maintenance based on the production volume. The objective of the work was to develop methods and processes that describe how Scania's factories in Södertälje, within the framework of the Future Powertrain Program (FPP), will transition to a maintenance interval based on volume. These methods shall then be tested in two pilots, one pilot at Scania's axle and gearbox assembly and the other pilot at Scania's engine processing. To increase the project group's knowledge of subjects covered by the project, literature studies were carried out on reports, articles and in fact books. Literature studies were also performed during the course of the work on subjects that were not covered by the work's initial literature study. In addition to the literature study, a document study was also performed on the company's internal documents and included, among other things, the preparation process and instructions for Maximo, which is the maintenance system used at Scania. The project group also conducted interviews with staff at Scania IM and Scania during the work as the project members wanted to gain insight into the business and the existing ways of work. By delimiting the work, the focus has been on realizing the theory on a smaller area to investigate whether this transition is possible to implement. The selected pilot areas located at DT and DM were studied with regards to both organization and production equipment. These studies, together with the project groups literature study and document study, were then used when developing the methods. The methods developed within the project were tested in pilots on selected areas and equipment. The pilots that were carried out within the project were successful and the aim for Scania now is not to return to calendar-based maintenance but instead expand the use of themethods developed by this project. The result of this work is that a more accurate maintenance will be performed in relation to the calendar-based maintenance. The project group could also state that the safety in the workshops could be increased when applying the project's developed methods. This is because the maintenance performed on e.g. emergency stops or other safety functions are performed in relation to the use of the equipment. The methods developed within the project takes into account whether the equipment is covered by warranty or regulatory requirements. They also take into account the length of the PM and whether the PM includes routes, operator maintenance, periodic exchanges or security. These factors decides which measures needs to be taken on the calendar-controlled and volume-based PM, which results in an adapted and improved PM plan.

Full textA company can use different strategies when performing maintenance. One strategy is corrective maintenance where maintenance is carried out after a failure has occurred. Another strategy is preventive maintenance. A combination of the two is often used. The preventive maintenance can be predetermined or condition based. Advantages with the condition based maintenance are e.g. that the replacement of parts can be planned according to observations indicating there’s an increasing risk of failure. When choosing preventive maintenance, the RCM method can be used to determine risk of failure modes and the cause of function failures. Decisions regarding the preventive maintenance should be based on knowledge in new techniques, history of failures and the equipment and competence available. Volvo Cars in Skövde is doing more or less the same preventive maintenance on machine tools regardless of whether it’s a new or old machine. The company is using condition based maintenance on some of the components and units. Mostly it consists of human inspections, a subjective control of the machine’s condition, and spindle vibration analysis. Through interviews it has been determined that new techniques are rarely implemented and that the decided maintenance plan for a machine is rarely changed. The company is aware of the development of new techniques for condition based maintenance and wants to investigate whether it is appropriate to evolve their condition based maintenance on machine tools. The techniques further investigated are measurement with Ball bar, monitoring of process parameters and geometrical verification. To make accurate decisions regarding the implementation of new techniques, a data collection of the history of frequent failures was done. To limit the amount of data a five year old processing line was studied. Data from the maintenance system Maximo was sorted by long failures from the recent years and by prioritizing with the Pareto principle it showed the recurring failures of ball screws. The component do have a condition based maintenance activity today, there is an inspection once a year. However, the inspection is rarely able to predict or find a failure on the ball screw. Four out of twenty-seven ball screws with fault have been changed after inspection over the last five years. By mapping the components failures on fifteen machine tools and when preventive maintenance has been done, several options for improvements were found. The cost of the replacement of a ball screw when a failure has already occurred is as much as ten times the cost of replacement before failure. This is caused by cost of scrap and long down time. A new, improved preventive maintenance task is therefore highly justified. The motif is both reducing the scrap cost related to failure and with increased availability. The company is recommended an investment in Ball bar as a new method for condition based maintenance. It should be used to increase the objective control of the mechanical parts of a machine tool. The method is not totally new for the company and relatively easy to implement. The current subjective control on the machine tools should be revised to increase the probability of finding degradation of functions. Today the activity takes rather long time and has therefore not been done in time, it should be shorter. The company is also recommended to investigate new methods for preventive maintenance continually. Today there is no employee with that mission and to evolve maintenance, the company has to be updated on new techniques.

Full textBoliden Mineral AB in Garpenberg is one of the most modern mines in the world to conduct in mining and enrichment of ore, containing lead, zinc, silver and gold. When the so called pastemixer in line two came into operation at the beginning of year 2019, it contained with distraction. The main goal of the project was to investigate the possibilities of increasing dependability of pastermixern in line two by offering solution on how to minimize the unplanned machine stops. An partial goal was to suggest routines for condition monitoring in machinery, in order to identify a significant change before it leads to unexpected production stops. The method of reaching the project goal was first to conduct personal interviews with staff that works with this machine daily. But also staff who had been involved during the purchase of this equipment. To understand the situation and the problem better an observation took place. The result of the collected data showed that the breakdown of the axis caused the most problem in production by causing ten days of production stop. The root showed that the maintenance organization did not have access to the suppliers recommended maintenance manuals from the beginning. The prerequisite to provide an preventive maintenance plan for this equipment was missing from the beginning. By establishing routines for condition monitoring in machinery is a way to prevent bearingand shaft problems but also unplanned production stops in the future.

Full textInternet of Things enables the creation of “smart environments”, where it is possible to exchange information between objects. This can lead to increased efficiency and automatization in different ways, for example in our homes and for business operations. An area where the interest for this technology is immense is in the industrial sector, and is referred to as Industry 4.0. For this area, the adoption of this technology is expected to, for example, improve efficiency and to predict maintenance, an approach known as e-maintenance. This new technology implies modification and development of business models and enables different types of information systems based on these. To be able to generate value for businesses when using an information management platform, variables that create value should be investigated. The purpose of this study is to examine value-adding variables, with aspects from Delone & McLean’s Information System Success Model (2003), for a specific business case by using an information management platform through Internet of Things and sensors in their operations. This study has been carried out as a case study with one of Sigma Technology’s clients, which this study was made in collaboration with. This study was carried out with an abductive research approach and a qualitative method. To examine the opinions of the company’s employees, individual, semi-structured interview was conducted. The interviews was analyzed and compared with Delone & McLean's Information Systems Success Model, to identify resemblance or divergence. The findings in this study show that the significant variables for value to be created are simplicity, information structure, accessibility and reliability. These factors are considered to be especially important, according to the respondents. Findings also show that the study is mostly consistent with the theoretical model, however, some variance has been discovered and some modifications of the model are presented. A dimension that the respondents did not consider equally important for value creation, and thus deviated from the theoretical framework, is service quality. Based on the significant factors presented in the study, the proposal is to further develop the model by adding an additional dimension, interaction quality, for the reason that the analysis of the value creating factors in this study describes this need.

Full textThis study has been carried out at the request by the energy company Norrenergi AB. It consists of an analysis on how they can reduce the maintenance regarding two dust transporting fans installed in the flue gas cleaning compartment of their thermal power plant. The study also compares what solutions other plants have regarding the dust-transport. The solution installed at Norrenergi AB was found to be rather unusual. Measurements and calculations have been performed to investigate further what have caused the high maintenance on the fans. The study looks into what upgrades are available to the entire dust transporting system. The result of the study turned into different suggestions, which includes a new configuration of the dust transporting system, and installation of new fans and also an upgrade of the existing dust transporting system. Among the suggestions the final recommendation is the alternative of installing new fans.

Full textToday, there is not enough maintenance on the 15 fungal and bacterial tanks found at AstraZeneca's wastewater treatment plant in Gärtuna, Södertälje. The company uses a maintenance strategy where they wait for the tanks to fail and then fix them. The treatment plant wants to create a maintenance strategy for the tanks by finding out if the life span can be extended or if, and if so, when the equipment needs to be renovated, upgraded, or replaced. With literature studies maintenance strategies, wastewater treatment plants and various condition investigations, were analysed. The visits were made to get a better idea of how the work at the wastewater treatment plant looks like today. Interviews were held with the head of the water treatment plant, an experienced operating technician and two external companies working on maintenance. The result shows information about what errors occurred, what measures were taken and what it cost. It also shows how maintenance can be done with various external sources and costs for this. Two different condition investigations, digital x-ray scanning and penetrant testing are suggested to detect errors in the tanks. After analysing the results, conclusions about a new maintenance strategy could be drawn. Recommendations on how it can be implemented, and an appropriate interval have been developed. AstraZeneca should go from corrective to scheduled condition-based maintenance, where condition investigations are performed every three, four or five years depending on the staff's assessment and they could make use of external sources when it comes to washing and condition investigations of the tanks. Corrective maintenance is impossible to plan and our solution will minimize this. Scheduled condition-based maintenance that we recommend will result in a much simpler planning where unexpected costs as well as unexpected downtime will be avoided. Regular maintenance will probably result in an increase in the service life of the tanks, which contributes to better durability and they will not have to buy new tanks.

This Bachelor Thesis deals with how to prepare a computerization of a Maintenance Management System. The Bachelor Thesis is written by commission at Lear Corporation in Torslanda, Sweden. The paper is divided into two parts: evaluate a software and document all preventive maintenance. The purpose is to get better control and planning of preventive maintenance in the future. Tekla™ Maintenance is the software that is going to be evaluated.
The aim is to document all preventive maintenance for two of three production lines at Lear Corporations factory at Torslanda, Sweden.
The research shows that Tekla™ Maintenance met the specifications. One of the basic requirements was to automate the management of prevention maintenance activity, by issuing work order. Furthermore a user friendly interface was required. A description of Tekla™ Maintenance is included in the report.
To get a feeling of how the programme perform in real world, benchmarking was preformed against Plastal AB. The benchmarking resulted in that Plastal AB recommended the Tekla™ Maintenance programme.
Currently the documentation does not contain enough detailed information to allow a thorough review of all production lines.
By dividing all lines into zones, all activities at each zone have been documented.
Feedback form the operators was given, about what type of preventive maintenance that is required.
To be able to put all the information into Tekla™ Maintenance, an Excel file has been made. This file contains over 2000 entries and should provide a solid base for future preventive maintenance.

Full textThe manufacturing industry is characterized by continuous development and improvement work, especially when it comes to its production department which is the heart of the business. This is where the products we consumers dream of are visualized, defined, and prepared to come to life. The companies are therefore subject to having a production that produces competitively at a high speed, but also resource-efficient and reliable. Technical availability is the key figure that describes whether the company's equipment lives up to its expectations and is today one of the most common key figures used in the industrial sector. The key figure is a percentage that describes the proportion of the organization's equipment that is available during the planned production period and is used to measure the equipment's performance but also to predict and prevent production stoppages. In this study, we have calculated the technical availability of one of Scania's assembly lines by calculating their machines MTBF and MTTR with regard to serial and parallel interconnections. The result shows that availability losses can easily be avoided by using redundancy and that individual machines' poor performances can reduce the final result due to the machines' serial connections to each other. Furthermore, it can be concluded that valuable information that can be used for strategic decision-making within the production department is not necessarily extracted from the technical availability but instead from analyzing its building blocks MTTR and MTBF. These key figures can be used to validate the organization's maintenance strategies, as well as to predict and prevent machine breakdowns. In Scania's case, the availability of the department on which the study is based is so high that there is not really room for improvement that can be achieved at staff level, and any goals for improvement may feel far-fetched. As a solution to this, you can instead look at MTBF and MTTR with respect to all machines of the same type instead of looking at them individually. This will get you a value that represents the machine group's average performance in the department. With this you will get a figure that the staff in the maintenance department can be involved in and influence on a daily or weekly basis instead of a 6-month period.

Full textThe following thesis work has been carried out as a case study at BillerudKorsnäs together with a literature study which has given rise to the theoretical frame of reference which fundamentally laid the foundation for the Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) measurement structure designed for the company. Furthermore, data collection in the form of internal and external benchmarking together with document studies, semi-structured interviews and structured observations has been carried out in order to get a complete view of the current situation as possible in accordance with the guidelines for scientific research approach. The research covers the subject area of maintenance technology and aims to map the maintenance strategy to be able to design a (KPI’s) measurement structure for BillerudKorsnäs maintenance organization. The thesis then gives rise to the analysis section which, with the support of the theoretical frame of reference, describes the improvement proposals and future recommendations to elucidate world-class maintenance and reliability. The study presents maintenance operations based on Swedish standards and “leading and lagging” measurement structure as a scientific basis. This has resulted in a defined metric structure with key performance measures for a maintenance organization where the maintenance strategy is connected to the company's vision and strategy. The question linked to the problem formulation permeates the research and is about explaining how to link to the maintenance strategy and describing which KPIs are to be reported, in order to create an efficient and productive maintenance organization that functions in accordance to the maintenance goals set on BillerudKorsnäs- Sulfatfabrik. The results of the conducted research show that the KPI- structure has not been established in accordance with BillerudKorsnäs' maintenance strategy at a cooperation level, furthermore, the key figures do not show an effect metric relevant to the maintenance operations and the factory management. The proposed improvement proposal proposes a new KPI- structure that provides measurability to the industrial maintenance operation and is symmetrical with BillerudKorsnäs vision and strategy for "Best working methods" in world-class maintenance and reliability.

Full textThis thesis was carried out at Astrazeneca Södertälje within Meto-pre stage, which is part of the factory API, intending to streamline the maintenance work. Apreventive maintenance survey was carried out, to identify maintenance work that was performed twice by both API operators and the maintenance provider Caverion. The thesis presents an account of concepts in maintenance, TPM (Total Productive Maintenance), and the decision model QFD (Quality Function Deployment) which constitute the theoretical starting point for results and analysis. The thesis is based on collected observations and interview materials from staff active in operations and maintenance. The results of the study show that there are overlaps in maintenance work, for example in weekly supervision/inspections and preventive maintenance (FU) within the factory part Meto-pre stage. Both operators and Caverion carry out maintenance operations that include a visual control of oil levels, leakage, noise, vibrations for several machines. A clearer distribution of maintenance measures between operators and Caverion will contribute to the streamlining of maintenance work.
