Abstract:
This study aimed to investigate how proficiency and age are related to Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA). A total of 88 teenagers and adults with different levels of proficiency answered the Language History Questionnaire and the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale. The analyses revealed (1) a significant negative correlation between the participants’ mean self-assessed proficiency and their level of FLA; and (2) a significant positive correlation between the participants’ age and their level of FLA. In other words, the lower the proficiency level, the higher the participants’ anxiety level.

Translator training in Chile faces the challenge of developing the students’ linguistic competence and translator competence (TC). This chapter explores the use of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) as a means to thematically articulate a language and a translation course in an undergraduate translation program. Three CLIL-based thematic units are delivered in an English language course. The academic results of the fifteen students suggest an academic improvement in the translation course in comparison to previous cohorts. Nine of those participants and the translation lecturer engage in semi-structured interviews to explore their perceptions of the approach. The findings indicate that CLIL performs an enabling function in fostering the development of TC in the translation course.

AbstractIn this chapter we examine a foreign language learning environment in a community-engaged setting in a Canadian city through a new materialist lens. As part of a service-learning project, Canadian students of Finnish language and culture visit a Finnish language seniors’ centre regularly to participate in different activities and spend time with the Finnish-speaking seniors. We examine the assemblage of the participants (seniors and students) and one artefact, a map, and offer a close analysis of the intra-action that takes place during one visit at the centre. In our analysis, our service-learning collaboration does not merely give a voice and agency to seniors. Rather, the seniors actively take the opportunity to voice their knowledge, and doing that, give a voice to an old Finnish school map, which retells stories of the seniors’ past in intra-action. Meanwhile the students also gain new knowledge.
