Abstract This chapter considers programs that collect data relating to an individuals’ psychological activity, personality dispositions, and behavioral patterns. It begins with a look at the efficacy of criminal profiling in the past and the progression to emotion coding systems in the 1980s. The chapter explores how these historical programs, as well as the theory that facial expressions are biologically connected to certain emotions, provide the foundation for modern facial emotion recognition (FER) technologies in use today. The chapter looks at how FER software is utilized by governments to monitor facial expressions, and how natural language processing (NLP) is used by authorities to ascribe meaning to written discourse. The chapter also reviews the notion of cognitive security—the idea that our thought processes are vulnerable to hacking by foreign or nefarious actors and therefore the state has the responsibility to step in to protect our mental resilience to these threats.

Abstract:
Like 2023, 2024 was a year of intense diplomatic activity, with two old hands in politics and international relations, José Ramos-Horta and Xanana Gusmão, returning to top posts. In the economic sphere, the blue economy and the forging of a maritime sector were the government’s new mantra in its quest for diversification, in a context where economy is still heavily reliant on hydrocarbons. A large part of foreign relations was focused on the prospect of ASEAN membership, while the country’s heightened profile has benefited from major international events, such as Pope Francis’ visit to Dili. The country also raised its relations with China to the level of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Another highlight of diplomatic life was the election to the Indonesian presidency of Prabowo Subianto, a general whose 20-year career is inextricably linked to the Indonesian occupation of Timor-Leste (1975-1999). The political leaders of the two countries chose to manage this major change with a high dose of pragmatism, emphasising the notion of Reconciliation. Admittedly, there were still some issues waiting for resolution between the two countries, such as the final settlement of land borders.

Scheiber, Marcus. "Disintegration." In Postdisciplinary Studies in Discourse. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-49238-9_14.

Abstract:
AbstractThe stereotype of disintegration is conceived as the Jewish tendency for “activity directed towards separation or destruction” of a community or state. Originally used to designate chemical or biological processes that oppose the process of “composition,” the expression underwent a change of meaning when linguistic images of such processes were projected onto developments in social and political spheres. The idea of a disintegrating quality is attributed to Jews in an essentialising way as a habitual, formative behaviour that aims at the dissolution of state, social and spiritual order. The central moment of the stereotype of disintegration manifests itself in the idea of a people as a single organism that can only carry out its activities if all its parts or members are intact and work together. Jews are excluded from this organism as foreign bodies, frequently portrayed in biological terms as “viruses” or “parasites.” Jewish participation in that organism supposedly poses a threat of “infection,” “decay” and finally “dissolution.”

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter examines the role of political leadership and the utilisation of digital diplomacy in advancing the norms and objectives of feminist foreign policy. It explores the various roles that leaders play in the political articulation, resonance and contestation of feminist foreign policy in the digital realm. It specifically analyses how and in what ways former Swedish foreign minister Margot Wallström actively engaged, as a norm entrepreneur, in efforts to garner political support for Sweden’s feminist foreign policy, while disseminating a feminist vision of a more gender-just world order to global online audiences. Moreover, the chapter examines how Wallström strategically articulated Sweden’s feminist foreign policy as a prioritised agenda and the international resonance it elicited, particularly evidenced by the positive responses of states such as Canada and Germany. Finally, the chapter elucidates the ramifications of political leadership and gendered contestation on social media by analysing Sweden’s role in the #shedecides digital campaign. This campaign was triggered in response to the reinstatement of the US global gag rule by the Trump Administration, which sought to restrict the sexual and reproductive rights of girls and women worldwide.

Abstract Chapter 19 examines the new offence provisions in Part 1 of the National Security Act 2023. It begins by examining the previous law contained in the Official Secrets Acts 1911-39 and why this had become unfit for modern conditions. The author then considers the Part 1 offences, starting with the ‘foreign power condition’ and then looking at the offences of obtaining or disclosing protected information (s. 1), obtaining or disclosing trade secrets (s. 2), assisting a foreign intelligence service (s. 3), entering etc prohibited places (ss 4, 5), sabotage (s. 12), foreign interference (s. 13), foreign interference in elections (s. 16) and preparatory conduct (s. 19). The author then considers aggravation of sentence where an ‘ordinary’ crime is committed for or on behalf of a foreign power; powers of investigation; offences by bodies corporate; extra-territoriality; consents to prosecutions, and the power of the courts to exclude the public from proceedings for a Part 1 offence where necessary in the interests of national security. The chapter also gives an overview of the new regime for registering foreign activity arrangements and political influence activity.
