Abstract:

Abstract:
Te article focuses on the foreignisms used in the multicultural novel “Te Book of Khalid” by Ameen Rihani. Foreign words in literature possess certain attractive power as well as produce esthetic and artistic effects. Along with creative force and meaning foreignisms may as well give the reader some notion of the author’s self-identifcation and self-representation as member of the literary intellectual community of Syrian and Lebanese frst emigrants in the frst half of the XX-th century. Te novel in question is characteristic of typical features related to Arab-American literature of that period. Stylistic and literary analysis of foreign words in the book gave the desired self-image of the author as a representative of the Arab community in the USA. Tis image comprises certain philosophical and religious principles, authentic social and cultural features, literary and stylistic uniqueness. Close analysis of foreignisms as a linguistic and stylistic means adds to the overall understanding of the novel including the underlying messages and conceptual implications.

This dissertation approaches the use of foreignisms in the supplements Economia (Economics) of the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo (The State of São Paulo) and Dinheiro (Money) of the newspaper Folha de São Paulo (São Paulo s Newspaper) for a period of three months, from May to July, 2006. As from the criticism made to the insertion of foreignisms into Brazil s Portuguese language, specially by the Bill 1676/99 of congressman Aldo Rebelo, which Disposes on the promotion, protection, defense and usage of the Portuguese language , this study aimed at showing how the foreignisms constitute themselves as a source of accretion to the changeable nature of a language. In order to achieve that, we based our work on specialists who have been dealing with foreignisms, such as: Carlos Alberto Faraco (2004), Nelly Carvalho (1987), José Luiz Fiorin (2004), Ana Maria S. Zilles (2004), Ieda Maria Alves (2004), Maria Tereza C. Biderman (2001) and on several discourses: debates in the press about the use of foreign words and expressions, laws, bills and decrees. In order to enlighten the use of foreignisms, we made use of a quantitative approach in which we showed their frequency and behavior in the corpus. The results made evident that it is possible to have the wide presence of foreignisms living together with a text which has the Brazilian Portuguese language as its basis. Such study allowed us to consider that the use of foreignisms in the economy area of the journalistic discourse does not represent a linguistic threaten, but constitutes a lexical variant in Brazil s Portuguese language.

By considering an approach which relates postcolonial studies and translation theories, this study questions the use of linguistic loans and foreignisms in Oswald de Andrade s poetic productions as translation acts and anti/postcolonial critique. The postcolonial categories presented by researchers as Edward Said, Homi Bhabha and Gayatri Spivak namely, the rupture of frontiers, difference as an enunciative category and temporality in the in-between space and questions on translation metaphors and untranslatability, in dialogue with the rich critique produced on Oswald de Andrade, stimulate the careful analysis of anthropophagy in the literary texts taken as our corpus: O Manifesto Antropófago (2011) and Memórias Sentimentais de João Miramar (2004). The result of the present research stresses the need for considering, within our current postcolonial debates, the anticipation of this anthropophagic reasoning, thus revealing a better understanding of important postcolonial aspects in Brazil

Abstract:
The present work is designed to identify and assess the integration of Anglicisms occurring in Ibero-American languages by means of print newspapers and their respective online versions. In the first part of the dissertation, we expound theoretical considerations, identifying influences of the excessive, ongoing presence of Anglicisms in Latin-American societies. So as to prepare the research, we examined print and online editions of the following newspapers: Folha de S. Paulo (Brazil), El Mercurio (Chile) and Clarín (Argentina). Words from the English language were researched in the texts of the selected newspapers, excluding proper nouns, names of persons or places, titles of books, films, music and entertainments. Considering lexical absorption as a natural process in language, this dissertation aims to deepen the understanding on how the lexical trajectory between the North-American English language and the languages spoken in South America is processed. As a result, we established that Anglicism incorporation to the vernacular occurs, in most cases, when the borrowing language lacks an equivalent word, and sometimes for other reasons, such as fad, status expression or professional jargon. However, this replacement contributes to these linguistic systems, since language is a changing communication tool, always following and expressing the trends of peoples.

The present study aims to analyze the use of the English language in three advertisements issued in nationwide magazines. A lot has been spoken and discussed about the use of words with origin in other languages which turn to be part of the vocabulary of speakers of another language. One may say that foreignisms are words that incorporate to the language, integrate to the linguistic code that adopts them, becoming loans. There are also the terminological neologisms or the ones by loan, applied in literary, advertising or journalistic texts; or that emerge to give name to new concepts, objects, inventions, situations in the linguistic community. Every society reflects in its language the evolution which went through and continues going through. In terms of Brazil, one must have in mind that the Portuguese language spoken here, a former colonized country, has always suffered influence of other languages, due to the contact with nations and, therefore, the Portuguese language, spoken in Brazil, has a mixture of influences of other cultures. The research is founded theorically on the discourse analysis focusing on the advertising discourse, analyzing the persuasive processes intrinsic to such discourse, following Bakhtin s theories in what it refers to the language. Jacobson s theories of communication were also used, as well as the theory of enunciation studied by Chaureadeau and Maingueneau. Moreover the analysis was founded on Aristoteles, in terms of genres and resources of rhetoric, while the visual signs were based on Pedrosa. The single analysis of each advertisement is the method used throughout the research in order to study discourse genres and languages functions that appear in them. At the end of such analysis there is a short comparison between the three advertisements to emphasize the similarities and the dfferences.

The theme discussed in this study is directly related to the question of the identity of the Portuguese language and consequently the cultural identification since it takes into account extralinguistic characteristics that motivate the use of commercial names considered to be creative and stylized. The main objective is to analyze the formation of commercial names, observing the neologisms of all kinds, including foreignisms and loans from the linguistic point of view linked to the cultural aspect. In view of the importance of the name of an establishment in the commercial context. The hypotheses presented in this study claims that the process of creation/formation of commercial names, as well as the cultural relevance and identities of these names for the inhabitants of the city, through the understanding that the name is an instrument of the definition of identity and is often through neologisms, loans and foreignisms. Furthermore, in the commercial context, naming a product or space with words of a language that is thought to be known by many people, and that conveys the idea of prestige is a way of speaking and negotiating efficiently, providing investments in creative advertising, especially in other languages that convey the idea of a globalized world. For this analysis, first, the names of ten clothing stores and nine salons were collected in Palmas, the capital of the State of Tocantins and in Catalão, a city in rural Goiás, with the intention of comparing the formations of the names and explaining them, after the interviews with the owners of the businesses , which was another important step in the collection information for analysis of training and possible motivations for the use of these names by the busniness owners, as well as demonstrating the type of morphosyntactic structure of these names and their spelling. The studies are based on authors who discuss the changes observed in the Portuguese language lexicon such as Alves (1990), Bechara (1996), Carvalho (2009), Correia and Barcellos Almeida (2012), Bizzocchi (2013), and by those who deal with identity Bauman (2005) and Hall (2005), as well as Cabral and Viegas (2007) with their essays on the importance of name. In conclusion, the choices show the concern with the formation of a commercial name in order to attract the attention of the public and, in the search to differentiate their business, use names with stylized writing, in an attempt to bring some unusual element to the writing. There is also the use of resources that break the rules of official spelling, often imitating the writing of the English language when naming their establishments, whether influenced by products or services they offer, and in making such choices are revealing aspects that motivate the contemporary subject, that is, the need to respond to a global connection that shows, at the same time, something different to the people, the easiness of hybridity in relation to the new and the different.

Abstract:
The massive influx of Anglicisms (Americanisms) in various languages, including Portuguese and Bulgarian, is a logical consequence of the growing number of contacts - politicai, economic and cultural for both Portugal and Bulgária, with countries in which English is a mother tongue. It is a well-known fact that specialists in the field of science and technology, as well as those operating in the field of the economy, politics and joumalism, are among those who have frequent recourse to Anglicisms. We can say that what necessitates the use of Anglicisms is reality itself, the new conditions in which we live. The aim of the present diploma paper is to trace and analyse some of the possibilities of the development of the national language of peripheral countries such as Portugal and Bulgaria, and their future. Along with that, we will try to find an answer to the questions related to the role of these languages in the development of the European and global cooperation, and their significance within the context of the European Community. One of the objectives of this study is to classiíy Anglicisms, excerpted ffom two newspapers specializing in business topics, that is the Portuguese 'Business weekly' and the Bulgarian 'Cash' newspaper, by making a short, comparative analysis of possible changes which the Anglicisms have gone through, and their possible adaptation. In this sense, the ease or difficulty with which one culture adopts and adapts the borrowings from another language to its language system could be indicative of its conservatism or flexibility and adaptability to the changing environment, respectively. In the course of our study, we will try to cast a light on the issues connected with the inordinate use of Anglicisms in the business and politicai vocabulary. We will also seek an answer to the following question: Ts humankind's cultural diversity jeopardized? Will economic globalisation entail peoples' cultural unification as well?

Harahap, Faisal R. "Essays on Emerging Multinational Enterprises' Acquisitions in Developed Economies." FIU Digital Commons, 2017. https://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/3540.

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates emerging multinational enterprises (EMNEs)’s acquisitions of firms in developed economies (DE) through three distinctive but interrelated essays. Despite costs EMNEs must offset from the obvious cultural distance (CD) they encounter with limited exploitable advantages, EMNEs have continued to aggressively acquire firms in DE, suggesting there are ways for the EMNEs to effectively overcome CD. In Essay 1, using insights from the symbolic interaction paradigm in sociology, I developed the Dynamic Socio-Cultural Model (DSCM), to uncover the general process of cultural creation and change. At the core of the DSCM is the process of collective learning and adaptive interaction in every social system. Viewing EMNEs’ acquisitions in DE as a cultural event that leads to new shared cultural resources, DSCM shows culture is not as rigid as was typically conceptualized in the cross-cultural management literature. While the negative effect of CD may initially impede EMNEs, CD may be positively moderated by certain conditions of the involved cultures. In Essay 2, I extended DSCM and combined it with insights from the organizational learning literature to focus on EMNE’s choices of control mode and their performance implications. Performing event study and endogenous switching regression on 1157 EMNE’s acquisitions in 21 advanced economies, I found EMNEs have, on average, a positive post-acquisition performance. I also found being an EMNE from an emerging economy that underwent rapid industrialization and targeting a high-tech firm increases the probability for choosing a low-control mode. Moreover, EMNE acquirers choose control mode by strategically considering their unique characteristics to optimize performance. In Essay 3, using the same theoretical approach, I examined the target firms’ sources of value creation. Applying an event study on 167 acquisitions in North America made by EMNEs from 11 countries, I found EMNEs’ partial acquisitions in DE generate, on average, a positive target’s cumulative abnormal returns (CAR). There is also empirical support for several determinants of target’s value creation and moderation effects. In particular, I found target’s international experience attenuates the negative effect of CD on target CAR, while acquirer’s state-owned status exacerbates it. Overall, the three essays collectively contribute to research streams in EMNEs, seller’s view of M&A, and cultural change.
