Petro, Waleed. "The effective accuracy of dental records in forensic dental identification in Sudan." Thesis, University of the Western Cape, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/4458.

Abstract:
Magister Scientiae Dentium - MSc(Dent)<br>In Sudan there are currently no programmes targeting dentists to improve their own knowledge about how they can be part of human identification by keeping good dental records. In addition, no guidelines are stated by the health authorities about making, keeping and retention of dental records. The aim of this research was to assess the accuracy of dental records drawn up by the general dentists in Sudan with regard to forensic dental identification and compare these records to an ideal dental record. Dental records of 180 patients obtained from six sit

Abstract:
The large number of unidentified, decomposed and skeletonised remains found in South Africa (SA) necessitates relevant and reliable methods to assist in victim identification. Ancestry estimation from unknown skeletal remains is essential when reconstructing a demographic profile of a missing person. In the SA population, estimating ancestry is problematic as standards developed internationally rarely apply to the local, biologically heterogenous population. Craniofacial morphology is known to be ancestrally distinct and studies are yet to explore shape and size variation in the zygomatic bone

Language barriers in eyewitness testimonies may pose threats toward witnesses’ accuracy, and consequently on the outcome of judicial procedures. The present study aims to investigate the credibility and the extent of reported detail information of eyewitnesses’ testimony of a crime event, when the testimony is given in witnesses’ first language, second language, or second language through interpreter. Moreover, the study examines whether eyewitness suggestibility is affected by the language to which the testimony is provided. Participants (N=60) were exposed to a mock crime event and subsequen

Abstract:
In forensic science one frequently has to deal with unidentified skeletonised remains. When conventional methods of identification have proven unsuccessful, forensic facial reconstruction (FFR) may be used, often as a last resort, to assist the process. FFR relies on the relationships between the facial features, subcutaneous soft tissues and underlying bony structure of the skull. The aim of this study was to develop soft tissue thickness (STT) values for South African black females for application to FFR, to compare these values to existing literature or databases, and to test the accuracy a

The fate of the human body after death is a subject that has fascinated enquirers, both religious and scientific, for millennia. However, objective research into the causes and nature of human decomposition has only taken place in the last two centuries and quantitative measurement of the process as a means of estimating the time since death has only recently been attempted. Most research has involved attempting to estimate the time since death (TSD) in the early period after death; from the moment of death until the body cools to ambient temperature. Estimating the post-mortem interval (PMI) is one of the most important determinations to make in a forensic investigation. However, at present, an accurate and reliable forensic anthropological method for estimating the PMI, based on the gross morphological changes occurring during decomposition, is currently unavailable. This is due to a multitude of variables influencing the rate and processes of decomposition in any given environment. Forensic anthropologists have traditionally relied on their knowledge and experience of the decomposition stages to make an assessment of the time since death
