The article discusses some current issues (“sore points”) of forensic linguistic expertise in Russian criminal and civil law proceedings. Forensic linguists have been increasingly invoked by Russian law enforcement authorities in recent years. Linguists, who were neophytes in legislation, have eagerly rushed to undertake forensic examinations. As a result, many mistakes in expert reports misled judges and provoked criticism. The author suggests some ways to improve the objectivity and reliability of linguistic evidence based on unification and standardization of methodological approaches to fo

The article addresses one of the current problems of forensic linguistics - the problem of a forensic linguist’s specialized knowledge. Basing on the study of the concept of “specialized knowledge” in legislation and the theory of forensic science and the practice of forensic linguistic analysis, the author demonstrates that a forensic linguist’s specialized knowledge is inhomogeneous in its nature. It is not limited to linguistic knowledge only but has a complex structure, which includes background knowledge, awareness of forensic science theory, and understanding of substantive and procedura

This thesis applies critical linguistic perspectives and methodologies to reassess the participation of media discourses in the operation of criminal trails by jury in Great Britain and the United States. Trial by media has been traditionally perceived as an infrequent and high profile phenomenon which is regulated by statutes and conventions operational in these legal arenas. Abstract:
This thesis empirically investigates how a corpus linguistic approach can address the main theoretical and methodological challenges facing the field of forensic authorship analysis. Linguists approach the problem of questioned authorship from the theoretical position that each person has their own distinctive idiolect (Coulthard 2004: 431). However, the notion of idiolect has come under scrutiny in forensic linguistics over recent years for being too abstract to be of practical use (Grant 2010; Turell 2010). At the same time, two competing methodologies have developed in authorship analysis.

While much research has shown that some linguistic features can indicate a person is lying, this line of research has led to conflicting results. Furthermore, very little research has been done to verify that these supposed linguistic features of deception are universal. In addition, few studies have researched the cross-cultural perceptions of deception, which knowledge could greatly improve the detection of deception across cultures.
