Abstract:
This essay engages with the question of surveillance and evidence by considering the use of media forensics in journalistic storytelling. The use of video evidence and other data derived from surveillance systems to assemble investigative news results in a documentary form of what Thomas Levin (2002) calls surveillant narration—a tendency in cinema to treat surveillance thematically while at the same time incorporating it into the structure of the narration itself. If using surveillance as the structure of journalistic narration seems like a natural fit, it is for its aesthetic effect as much as its evidentiary value. Forensic journalism is emerging as one site where media forensics becomes formalized as a product of popular consumption and sense-making, taking its place alongside forensic-themed reality television and fictional crime dramas like CSI, as much as real forensic investigations and legal proceedings.

Abstract:
Vehicle systems have been one of the fastest-growing fields in recent years. Vehicles are extremely helpful for understanding driver behaviors and have received significant attention from a forensic perspective. Extensive forensic research was previously conducted on on-board vehicle systems, such as an event data recorders, located in the electronic control unit or manufacturer-based infotainment systems. However, unlike previous vehicles that used only manufacturer-based infotainment systems, most vehicles today are equipped with infotainment systems such as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. These in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems connect to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. The vehicle can periodically communicate with a smartphone and thus a network outside the vehicle. Drivers can use more services in their vehicles than ever before. Accordingly, an increasing number of diverse data are being stored in vehicles, with mobile devices connected to both the vehicle and the cloud. Such data include information that can be of significant help to investigators in solving problems during forensic investigations. Therefore, forensics of IVI systems such as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are becoming increasingly important. We analyzed various forensic studies conducted on Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Most of the research was mainly focused on mobile devices connected through a wired USB connection. The use of wireless-based IVI systems has recently been increasing. However, the analysis of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay from this point of view is insufficient. Therefore, we proposed a forensic methodology that fully considers such limitations. A forensic analysis was conducted on various IVI systems. We also developed an IVI system forensics tool that works based on the proposed methodology.

Abstract:
Advancements in genome sequencing technologies, improvements in microbial sampling methods and recent approaches in bioinformatics have driven the rise in microbiomics and metagenomics. Diverse ranges of microbial communities are hosted by human bodies which interact with its environment and cause change in it. Human and environmental microbial profiles can be extracted and analyzed to get information of these interactions and they are likely to be applicable in forensics. In this review we explain microbiome and metagenomics with emphasis on its application in forensics and for identification purposes, and factors affecting the microbiome diversity in the light of previous studies. No doubt this field is still in its beginning but the use of microbiomics and metagenomics signature for this purpose has potential to increase the forensic toolkit. Most of time, studies have been affected by sample size limitation and model accuracies which leads to less exploration of the complete potential of microbiomics in forensics. Furthermore, currently the information obtained from microbial forensics is not considered in dubious by the law enforcement agencies. However, extensive research is needed to overcome these challenges to make evidences based on microbiome served to futuristic revolutionary forensic investigations.

Abstract:
Background: Microbial forensics is a multidisciplinary area, which has been recently considered an effective tool in forensic investigations. This growing field of forensics covers a wide spectrum of different branches of science, including biology, chemistry, physics, geology, mathematics, and computer sciences, leading to a practical approach that can be applied in several areas such as bioterrorist actions, environmental issues, emerging and reemerging diseases, as well as reliable trace evidence at a crime scene. Methods: The information has been gathered via Google Scholar using several keywords, including forensic microbiology, bioterrorism, forensic investigation, and trace evidence. The data were from reliable articles and books published over 50 years. This paper is a short review of forensic microbiology with a bioinformatics perspective to use in different fields such as the court. Results: It is known that using either microorganisms or their toxins is a low-cost potential tool with serious morbidity and mortality rates that can spread all around the world by food or water supplies or even through the air, making them a perfect candidate bioweapon with minimum traceability. Studies have indicated that environmental conditions plus biological and abiotic factors would affect the following analysis and the final validation, which is an essential step in the forensic investigation due to its highly effective role in the court vote. To face different challenges, law enforcement has the infrastructure for attribution and deterrence (e.g., following the exact microbial forensics program) so that it can be used in court. Developing more reproducible, sensitive, and accurate methods, preparing a wide reliable database, and devoting the right amount of budget will help improve the whole forensic procedure in the legal system. Conclusions: The current paper is a short review of how forensic scientists can use microbial features on a crime scene to clarify and enhance the procedure to solve different criminal cases.

Abstract:
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are adaptable and rapid mobile boards that can be applied to several purposes, especially in smart cities. These involve traffic observation, environmental monitoring, and public safety. The need to realize effective drone forensic processes has mainly been reinforced by drone-based evidence. Drone-based evidence collection and preservation entails accumulating and collecting digital evidence from the drone of the victim for subsequent analysis and presentation. Digital evidence must, however, be collected and analyzed in a forensically sound manner using the appropriate collection and analysis methodologies and tools to preserve the integrity of the evidence. For this purpose, various collection and analysis models have been proposed for drone forensics based on the existing literature; several models are inclined towards specific scenarios and drone systems. As a result, the literature lacks a suitable and standardized drone-based collection and analysis model devoid of commonalities, which can solve future problems that may arise in the drone forensics field. Therefore, this paper has three contributions: (a) studies the machine learning existing in the literature in the context of handling drone data to discover criminal actions, (b) highlights the existing forensic models proposed for drone forensics, and (c) proposes a novel comprehensive collection and analysis forensic model (CCAFM) applicable to the drone forensics field using the design science research approach. The proposed CCAFM consists of three main processes: (1) acquisition and preservation, (2) reconstruction and analysis, and (3) post-investigation process. CCAFM contextually leverages the initially proposed models herein incorporated in this study. CCAFM allows digital forensic investigators to collect, protect, rebuild, and examine volatile and nonvolatile items from the suspected drone based on scientific forensic techniques. Therefore, it enables sharing of knowledge on drone forensic investigation among practitioners working in the forensics domain.

Abstract:
The adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) devices is rapidly increasing with the advancement of network technology, these devices carry sensitive data that require adherence to minimum security practices. The adoption of smart devices to migrate homeowners from traditional homes to smart homes has been noticeable. These smart devices share value with and are of potential interest to digital forensic investigators, as well. Therefore, in this paper, we conduct comprehensive security and forensic analysis to contribute to both fields—targeting a security enhancement of the selected IoT devices and assisting the current IoT forensics approaches. Our work follows several techniques such as forensic analysis of identifiable information, including connected devices and sensor data. Furthermore, we perform security assessment exploring insecure communication protocols, plain text credentials, and sensitive information. This will include reverse engineering some binary files and manual analysis techniques. The analysis includes a data-set of home automation devices provided by the VTO labs: (1) the eufy floodlight camera, and (2) the Kasa smart light bulb. The main goal of the technical experiment in this research is to support the proposed model.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this study, we investigate large-scale digital forensic investigation on Apache Spark using a Windows registry. Because the Windows registry depends on the system on which it operates, the existing forensic methods on the Windows registry have been targeted on the Windows registry in a single system. However, it is a critical issue to analyze large-scale registry data collected from several Windows systems because it allows us to detect suspiciously changed data by comparing the Windows registry in multiple systems. To this end, we devise distributed algorithms to analyze large-scale registry data collected from multiple Windows systems on the Apache Spark framework. First, we define three main scenarios in which we classify the existing registry forensic studies into them. Second, we propose an algorithm to load the Windows registry into the Hadoop distributed file system (HDFS) for subsequent forensics. Third, we propose a distributed algorithm for each defined forensic scenario using Apache Spark operations. Through extensive experiments using eight nodes in an actual distributed environment, we demonstrate that the proposed method can perform forensics efficiently on large-scale registry data. Specifically, we perform forensics on 1.52 GB of Windows registry data collected from four computers and show that the proposed algorithms can reduce the processing time by up to approximately 3.31 times, as we increase the number of CPUs from 1 to 8 and the number of worker nodes from 2 to 8. Because the distributed algorithms on Apache Spark require the inherent network and MapReduce overheads, this improvement of the processing performance verifies the efficiency and scalability of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:
The paper investigates the development issues associated with the conceptual framework of the innovation studies in forensic science as a new research area in forensic science. The author studies the methodological problems of developing and grouping categories and concepts of the subject matter. It is substantiated that the level of development and validity of any scientific theory, including the innovation studies in forensic science, is determined according to the degree and level of development of its theoretical and methodological principles and the framework of categories and concepts of this theory. In particular, this refers to such concepts as forensic innovation, innovative forensic product, their functions, classifications, stages of the innovation process, etc. The study analyses the scientific approaches to understanding the basic categories of the matter under consideration, which are innovative forensic product and forensic innovation. The author offers their definitions, describes essential features and properties, and analyses the correlation of these concepts. Furthermore, the author analyses the general and universal dialectical method of rising from the abstract to the concrete and from the concrete to the abstract, including their role in the development of the conceptual framework of innovation studies in forensic science. The study notes that the methodological framework for the development and implementation of innovative forensic products and the application of forensic innovations in law enforcement also includes activity-based, system-structural, and technological approaches, the use of which is promising both in the study of basic concepts of innovation studies in forensic science and in the development of this forensic theory. The author articulates proposals and individual insights in the solution of particular debating points associated with innovations in forensic science and law enforcement practice. The study substantiates that a comprehensive approach to the development of basic concepts and categories of innovation studies in forensic science constitutes a methodological foundation for further research on this subject, which determines the promising areas for the development of forensic scienc

Abstract:
Violence in its most general aspect reveals important issues, mainly related to physical, mental, social and legal consequences. Childhood violence is a public health issue, as damage is described, affecting mainly cognitive, emotional and behavioral development. Studies show damage to children's development, resulting in biochemical, functional and structural changes in the brain, resulting from the violence suffered. The objective of the article was to verify the scientific production on the impact of violence on children's development in the field of forensic neuropsychology. Therefore, the production of knowledge on the topic and the impact of maltreatment on children's neuropsychological development was analyzed. This is an integrative literature review, supported by international databases. The results demonstrate the importance of a forensic neuropsychological assessment, to detect the impacts of violence, as well as to develop prevention and action strategies, in the scope of mental health, forensics and/or legal demands and thus, devise more effective measures for this population and subsidize public risk reduction policies applied to children and adolescents. Studies are still small, which shows a wide field to be investigated.

Abstract:
Both forensic and complex forensic and transport-tracological examination of car trauma was and remains the most valuable source of evidence in the criminal process, both at the pre-trial investigation stage and in court. Summary. The article deals with problematic issues of forensic medical examination of car injuries, starting from the fundamental works of the last century, and up to the present day. The special role of a careful study of the nature and mechanism of inflicting bodily injuries to the victims is underlined. Particular attention is paid to a significant change in the morphology and mechanism of causing bodily injuries to victims in connection with the use in the design of a modern car of various new elements and devices that enhance human safety in road accidents. The main tendencies of development of expert analysis in cases of road accidents are listed, and the absolute necessity of cooperation between experts in different branches of knowledge (forensic doctors, transport specialists, medical forensics) during expert studies related to road accidents is proved. Conclusions. The basis of forensic medical examination in cases of various accidents has been and remains the study of the morphological features of injuries in the injured, as well as injuries and traces on clothing and footwear. 2. At the same time, new structural elements of modern cars lead to the formation of damages that differ significantly from the previously observed morphological features. 3. The most complete expert study in cases of accidents can only be done through the joint work of experts of various specialties - forensic doctors, medical forensics, transport specialists.
