In the first longterm field study of the fossa, mean adult body mass measured was, in males, 7.4 kg (n=17, s.d.=1.2), and, in females, 6.1 kg (n=11 females, s.d.=0.6). Sexual size dimorphism was most marked in canine width. 376 scats yielded 554 prey items, of which the majority were lemurs (>50%)m, tenrecs and snakes. Incidence of prey in scats correlated positively with abundance. Scat composition varied with season, but not with year nor gender of fossa. Sexual dimorphism could not therefore be explained as niche separation. Home ranges were, for two males, 22.74 km2 and 26.20 km

Tigers (Panthera tigris Linnaeus, 1758) are in danger of extinction. Their populations have declined from ~100,000 to only ~3,000 individuals in a century and their habitat has shrunk to less than 7% of the historic range. Of the five extant tiger subspecies, the Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae Pocock, 1929) is the most seriously threatened. Currently determined as Critically Endangered under IUCN criteria, the Sumatran tiger is likely to become extinct unless effective conservation measures are enacted. Abstract:
A positive predator-prey population dynamics is important to sustain a healthy ecosystem. When this gap is widened it can have adverse effect on the particular ecosystem. Predators play an important role to keep the population of prey species in check. Predation also influences the size of the prey population by acting as a control. Predator and prey evolve together in a constant bid for survival. A healthy population of the apex predators also gives an indication of the health of the ecosystem. abstract: Riparian areas are an important resource, especially in the arid southwest, for many wildlife species. Understanding species occurrence in areas dominated by non-native vegetation is important to determine if management should be implemented. Saltcedar (Tamarix spp.) is one of the most prevalent non-native trees in riparian areas in the southwest United States and can alter vegetation structure, but little is known about how medium and large carnivores use stands of saltcedar. Three riparian forest types make up the San Pedro riparian corridor: non-native saltcedar, native mesquite (

The food habits, movement and activity patterns, and habitat use of sympatric carnivores, and wildlife harvest and utilization, were studied at the Taohong Village, Jiangxi Province, southeastern China during 1992–1996. Food habits of four species of sympatric carnivores were studied by scat analysis. Crab-eating mongooses (Herpestes urva) had the most diversified diet that included many water-edge food items. Masked palm civets (Paguma larvata) consumed a large proportion of fruits. Both small Indian civets (Viverricula indica) and hog badgers (Arctonyx collaris) fed heavily on rodents. Thoug

Abstract:
The transition of natural areas to forestry plantations is a growing worldwide phenomenon with direct consequences to biodiversity and entire ecosystems by changing forest’s composition and structure. Production plantations are often composed by fast-growing exotic species, aiming economic profit, often at the expense of well-suited habitats for wildlife and ecosystems’ functionality. In the Mediterranean region, production forests composed by Eucalyptus spp. are widely distributed, forming monospecific landscapes with impactful changes in many taxa and altering important ecological dynamics.
