Increasing forest parcelization has raised concerns about tract-size economies and sustainable timber supply. We explored this issue by examining the logging sector and forest ownership in northern Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Using 2004 survey data, we found that 48% of logging firms demonstrated a near exclusive reliance on nonindustrial private forests (NIPFs). NIPF-dependent firms derived 87.5% of their stumpage from this ownership, whereas nondependent firms exhibited a significantly more diversified stumpage supply distributed among public (42.6%), industrial-corporate (33.3

Discrepancies between the theoretical and actual investment behavior of firms in the Canadian forestry sector are described. It is demonstrated that these inconsistencies are, in reality, illusionary. They result from the failure of some analysts to account for the institutional framework within which private forest companies in Canada make decisions concerning the replacement and management of forest crops. Forest certification plays a notable role in promoting sustainability. This certification shows that forestland holders have adopted innovative practices toward realizing sustainable business models. Relatively little analysis has been devoted to identifying the efforts of transforming a conventional business model into a sustainable version through the application of forest certification. This paper examines the elements of a sustainable business model: value proposition, value creation and delivery, and value capture in certified forestland holders’ business operations. Empirical results hav

Abstract In this article, I examine pressures on the forest stock when multiple governments, which control different policies, have distinct revenue needs and respond to different constituencies. I assume one type of government controls public forest harvesting, while other governments (typically local or lower ones) control taxes on productive firms in their constituency. Preservation of public forests provides nontimber benefits, or public goods, for consumers at both local and national levels, and these public goods values may vary across constituencies. I investigate how public goods depen

Abstract During a typically dry season in Sumatra or Kalimantan, the forest fire starts. In 2015, an El Nino year, forest fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan ranked among the worst episodes on record. Understanding the connection between accumulated monthly rainfall and the risk of hotspot occurrence is key to improving forest fire management decision-making. This study addresses model development to predict the number of 6-month fire hotspots, by combining the prediction of rainfall with hotspot patterns. Hotspot data were obtained from the Fire Information for Resources Management System (FIRMS)

Abstract An industry-wide survey of the forest products industry was conducted to measure the development of environmental management systems (EMS) designed to implement sustainable forest management on industrial forestlands. The results indicated that larger capacity, publicly owned operations (i.e., paper or engineered forest products firms) that participated in a forest certification standard exhibited well-developed EMSs. Smaller capacity, privately owned operations, such as sawmills, had poorly or undeveloped EMSs. The study provides a valuable baseline by which to measure future EMS dev

Abstract This paper investigates the extent to which geographical and product diversification provide firms in the forest products industry of North America with means for coping with a turbulent environment. A turbulent environment is one where there is a high degree of uncertainty and sharp discontinuities; hence it is an unpredictable environment. The relationship between the firm's strategic positioning and performance is investigated. Another 17.6% did express interest in becoming involved within the next five years. This can lead to conflicts of use with other forest ecosystem services such as timber production or biodiversity conservation. Our main goal is to describe colle

We use a model with endogenous entry by asymmetric firms, allowing survivors to respond to the exit of bailed-out firms by entering more auctions and for these marginal entrants to have lower values than firms that would choose to enter in any event, a selective entry effect. Observed asymmetries and selective entry contribute to us finding that the bailout may have increased USFS revenue

Competitiveness of Romanian wood processing industry/NWFP on external markets is based mainly on the comparative advantage of lower labour costs. Competitiveness was affected till recently by the regulation of timber prices, restriction on timber trade and monopolistic position of the national forest administration. In the last decade the low level of internal consumption of forest products and the system of selling timber from public estate (NFA and the communal forests) had a high impact on firm development, particularly for firms from harvesting and primary wood processing.
