Baccini, Giulia <1979&gt. "The Forest of laughs (Xiaolin): mapping the offspring of self-aware literature in ancient China." Doctoral thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/1064.

Abstract:
My research is centred on the analysis of the Xiaolin (Forest of Laughs), a collection of anecdotes ascribed to Handan Chun (?132–225? AD) a famous scholar of Later Han – Wei period. Today the Xiaolin is considered the first specimen of collections of anecdotes specifically written for entertainment purposes. If it is true that Xiaolin’s anecdotes had no other aim than entertaining, it can, with reason, be considered the offspring of self-aware literature in ancient China. My research tries to bring evidences to this last statement. In order to do this, I provide a historical survey of the intellectual debate at court among the members of educated elite since Western Han to Wei Jin period. Then, I draw attention to the morphology and the structure of the brief narratives, which are collected under the title of Xiaolin. I provide historical information of the author’s deeds and compositions, to show him as a characteristic member of the educated elite of his own time. Finally, I present the critical edition of the anecdotes ascribed to the Xiaolin, with their translations.

Abstract:
The Central African Republic is a small country located in the center of Africa. It is a very young nation in terms of political independence, but as the CAR emerges as a nation, it has begun to produce valuable authors who write for the French speaking world. This thesis is an attempt to bring part of the CAR's literature to the United States.Le Silence de la Foret was written by Etienne Goyemide and not only describes the culture of the mainstream population of the CAR, but also that of Pygmies. Although the book is a novel, the cultural aspects are not fictitious. This thesis is a translation of Goyemide's novel into English so that it can be made accessible to the English speaking world. The process of translating such a literary work required and increased knowledge and understanding of both French and English. In attempting to capture the style and tone of the author, careful attention was given to such aspects as tense, syntactic structures, register and vocabulary. A chapter of the thesis is devoted to describing the problems encountered during translation and the reasoning for the translations chosen.

Mameli, Beatrice. "Wylde and Wode, Wild Madness in Middle English Literature." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Padova, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/11577/3424040.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, some episodes of wild madness in Middle English romance are analysed. Some knights, such as Lancelot, Tristan, Ywain and Partonope, experience this insanity generally as a consequence of a dramatic event in their love life. This wild madness presents precise characteristics: the mad knights tend to prefer wild and secluded environments – like the forest – they give up their clothes, alter their diet and are extremely aggressive. It has been suggested that these episodes might be influenced by the Biblical precedent of Nebuchadnezzar. It has also been noted that these madmen share some of the traits of the woodwose, or wild man, a popular figure in medieval folklore. These episodes, however, seem to contain possible references also to the medical theories, the laws and the customs of the time. Besides, the context of chivalric adventures and courtly love in which these protagonists act implied a strong frame of canons and conventions which needed to be respected. This dissertation focuses above all on Middle English texts, like Malory's Le Morte Darthur, Ywain and Gawain, and Partonope de Blois, but also the French versions of these works are occasionally taken into account.

Abstract:
Since the 1992 republication of On Our Own Ground: The Complete Writings of William Apess, a Pequot, most academic work on Apess has focused on his Methodism, his Native American identity, or the intersection between these two parts of his life and work. Dr. Tim Fulford is the only scholar to have written about Apess and Romanticism. In his book Romantic Indians: Native Americans, British Literature, and Transatlantic Culture, 1756-1830, Fulford illustrates the elegiac modes often present in the work of Apess. This thesis will examine William Apess’ Son of the Forest as an expression of early nineteenth century American Romanticism from a post-colonial standpoint. Apess uses Romantic rhetoric to define Native American identity and through that identity, argue for Native American political agency.

Abstract:

Writing about food and eating food are both environmental acts. The ways in which humans conceive of edible material—by speaking about it and growing it in the ground—are reflections of their view of the natural world.

Ecological fiction like Karen Tei Yamashita’s Through the Arc of the Rain Forest connects imagined visions of food with the current reality of our agricultural system in the United States. In both the fictitious narratives and lived experience, synthetic polymers overtake almost every aspect of life, including edible matter. The ubiquitous plasticization of food is one of the main causes of the current global environmental crisis.

Ultimately, the treatment of food in ecological fiction and in practice reveals our mistreatment of the environment and of our own bodies. Employing a systems-based way of thinking ecologically make visible the yet invisible lines of interconnection among the natural world, edible matter, and living beings.

Koret, Peter D. "Whispered so softly it resounds through the forest, spoken so loudly it can hardly be heard : the art of parallelism in traditional Lao literature." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 1994. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/29157/.

Full text
Abstract:
Parallelism is a fundamental yet overlooked organizational device in the composition of Lao literature. This device is used in the creation of style, developing in complexity and sublety from the spoken language, prose, to poetic literature. In literature composed in the poetic form of Kau:n A:n, the plot on every level is organized in an intricate and symmetrical layering of parallel pairs. Narrative is built from a pattern which can be referred to as AAB, which consists of two initial sections, parallel in meaning and frequently similar in grammatical structure, followed by a third and final section which provides a conclusion. AAB patterns, which can be of any length, have traditionally been used by Lao (and other Tai) poets to narrate a progression of ideas, time, or events. Typically within a Lao story there are numerous layers of overlapping patterns. There is a consistent symmetry in the placement of smaller patterns inside of larger ones. The AAB pattern provides a model from which the evolution of a Lao story can be interpreted. A comparative study reveals that when a story is copied, the text evolves through the systematic grafting of new AAB patterns onto older patterns, the enlargement of existing patterns, and the strengthening of existing parallels between statements. It appears that the continual recopying of Lao literature is responsible for the incredible intricacy of its parallel layers. This thesis, in its initial chapter, also provides a general description of Lao literature, including the topics; a) the history of ancient Lao scripts and literature, b) the relationship between the literature and the Buddhist religion, c) sources of the literature in other societies, d) literary works in the Nitsay, Ha:y and Kau:n A:n literary forms; the different roles they play and the circumstances of their composition, transcription, performance, and preservation, e) the relationship between the literatures of Lanna and Laos, f) the major plot types, g) the use of formula and themes, h) the role of creativity in composition and transcription, and i) a history of the study of parallelism and a consideration of the role that parallelism plays in traditional Lao literary narrative. The inventory in the appendix provides a list of 142 works of Lao literature, describing the literary forms in which they are written, their length, extent of distribution, published equivalents, and possible relationship with works in other societies.

Abstract:
The setting of Milton’s great sequel is puzzling, being called a desert and a “waste wild” (IV. 523) repeatedly and at the same time including descriptions of protective oaks and woody mazes. These conflicting descriptions conjure up several questions: In which environment does the epic take place? Because Milton is so detailed in his adaptations of biblical narrative the inclusion of trees is quite perplexing. While he does tend to expand biblical narrative quite frequently – e.g. Paradise Lost – he rarely initiates a change without just cause. The crux of this particular change centers on what this just cause could be. How does the addition of a few trees change the overall effect of Milton’s brief epic? This thesis thus attempts to find further meaning in Paradise Regained’s setting by exploring three possibilities for this just cause while uncovering what the concept of a tree/forest means in early modern England.

Chironomidae is the richest insect family in species and abundance in springs and other freshwater ecosystems. However Chironomids are scarcely studied. The first chapter deals with a scientometric approach in order to meet the current level of scientific knowledge produced recently for Chironomidae that can be found in springs. The evaluation of the world literature shows a reduced number of publications on the subject, mainly compared to other freshwater ecosystems. Most of publications in the subject are from either Europe, the remaining areas are yet to be better worked on. The second chapter presents the results of surveys carried out in different watersheds of Minas Gerais State and its main goal was to determine the factors that influence the distribution of Chironomid larvae. Some taxa considered common in the study were Caladomya, Corynoneura, Chironomus, Endotribelos. Our results highlight a preponderant role for the environmental factors (granulometry, dissolved oxygen, pH, vegetation cover, altitude) in determining the composition of Chironomidae assemblages. The results of this research emphasize the need for greater attention to the springs, considering their importance for aquatic biodiversity.

Dalhem, Johannes. Thesis, Lyon, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016LYSE2091.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD thesis offers a study of different forms of representations of the past in the French contemporary novel. Since several years, literary critics agree that there has been something like a “return to history” on the actual literary scene. But we also have to state that some con-temporary authors combine this “return” with a profound suspicion against the knowing of history and the (cultural or literary) forms of telling it. In his Le Siècle des nuages (2010), Philippe Forest tells the story of his father while at the same time questioning himself about how to represent a story which seems to withdraw itself constantly. The result is somewhat paradoxical and may be described as a self-referential historical novel that constructs and deconstructs itself in front of the reader’s eyes. In a similar way, Jean Rouaud’s L’Imitation du bonheur (2006) invites its reader in the artist’s workshop in order to reveal the sources and the resources of the story. Exploiting the techniques of realistic illusion, Rouaud is in fact parodying them. Waltenberg (2005) by Hédi Kaddour acts differently: in this novel, historical narration is undermined by a broken storyline, by a pluralization of times and spaces and by the abandoning of the chronological order. Thus the author confronts us with a history “in pieces” that doesn’t obey the principles of unity and coherence anymore. Even if the strategies of historical representation are quite different in these three novels, they are all based on a common concept which I suggest to call “critical historical narration”.The main part of my work consists of the analysis of the three novels mentioned above, an analysis which is mostly based on methods provided by narratology (D. Cohn, A. Nünning, W. Wolf) or theory of history (H. White, P. Ricœur, R. Koselleck). This main part is preceded by a more general part that is subdivided into three theoretical approaches: the systematizing approach tries to reunite some of the most important features of critical historical narration in a synopsis and thereby takes also account of other (contemporary) literary texts. The historical approach connects the novels analysed in the main part of this thesis to the work of Claude Simon, which will be considered here as an esthetical paradigm for a new kind of historical narration. Finally, the comparative approach focuses on professional historians (Ginzburg, Ja-blonka, Boucheron) who have been exploring new strategies of historical writing in the same way that novelists have done. Indeed, if these new strategies converge with those in literary writing because of the use they make of fiction, they are nevertheless included in a more general reflection on the possibilities of representing the past. Historiography thus may provide something like an equivalent to critical historical narration in literature

Abstract:
The translation of names is a topic for discussion within many fields, no less so within translation studies. Furthermore, the translation of proper names in children’s literature is a topic with on-going changes. There is a divide between those who believe that the names should be translated into proper cultural equivalent and those who believe it is time to have faith in children being able to handle foreign names. That is what this study will focus on. Approx. 15 names from seven children’s books from 1865 to 2011 were studied to conclude that there seems to be a greater faith in children’s ability to handle foreign names. Three languages were compared English, Spanish, and Swedish with the majority of the 337 names studied being kept in their original format, with spelling intact.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to contribute with knowledge about how forest environments are depicted in children’s literature that is published between the years of 1900-2021 and if there is anything that has changed. A conventional content analysis has been used to answer the aim of the study. In total, 18 children’s books have been analyzed, equally distributed between the timeframes: 1900-1949, 1950-1999 and 2000-2021. The result indicates that above all, there are several areas that hold differences between the timeframes. The forest environment was once very central in the books and now appears more distant from humans. Another clear difference is how different species used to be described with words embedded with value that is now described more factually. Anthropomorphism has been very evident in children’s literature but is slowly starting to disappear in newer books. The result also shows that an anthropocentric perspective, where the human is central, dominates in these children’s books. The study provides knowledge on what the reader will meet in children’s literature and suggests that it can be of importance to reflect over the content within the children’s literature that is being used in a childcare setting and preschool education

Abstract:
“Judging the Rational and the Dead: Ann Radcliffe and Feminist Theology” argues Radcliffe’s first three novels, The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne (1789), A Sicilian Romance (1790), and The Romance of the Forest (1791), show a progression of feminist theology informed by the late eighteenth-century British religious movement of Rational Dissent. The thesis attempts to complicate and extend Radcliffe scholarship by moving away from fractured critical discourses and into more cohesive readings of Radcliffe that include feminist and theological interpretations of her work. Of particular interest to the project are Radcliffe’s views on the circumscribed nature of women’s existence within British notions of church and state. The thesis does more than attempt to note Radcliffe’s objections to the circumscribed nature of women in British society; it also seeks to explore the potential solutions offered by a feminist theology that rejects establishment religious hierarchies in favor of a more Unitarian system.

Abstract:
This thesis considers a selection of modern landscape poetry from an ecocritical perspective, arguing that this poetry demonstrates how the term landscape might be re-imagined in relation to contemporary environmental concerns. Each chapter discusses poetic responses to a different kind of landscape: gardens, forests, rivers and islands. Chapter One explores how, in the poetry of Ian Hamilton Finlay, Douglas Dunn, Louise Glück and David Harsent, gardens are culturally constructed landscapes in which ideas of self, society and environment are contemplated; I ask whether gardening provides a positive example of how people might interact with the natural world. My second chapter demonstrates that for Sorley MacLean, W.S. Merwin, Susan Stewart and Kathleen Jamie, forests are sites of memory and sustainable ‘dwelling', but that deforestation threatens both the ecology and the culture of these landscapes. Chapter Three compares river poems by Ted Hughes and Alice Oswald, considering their differing approaches to river sources, mystical immersion in nature, water pollution and poetic experimentation; I discuss how in W.S. Graham's poetry the sea provides a complex image of the phenomenal world similar to Oswald's river. The final chapter examines the extent to which islands in poetry are pastoral landscapes and environmental utopias, looking in particular at poems by Dunn, Robin Robertson, Iain Crichton Smith and Jen Hadfield. I reflect upon the potential for island poetry to embrace narratives of globalisation as well as localism, and situate the work of George Mackay Brown and Robert Alan Jamieson within this context. I engage with a range of ecocritical positions in my readings of these poets and argue that the linguistic creativity, formal inventiveness and self-reflexivity of poetry constitute a distinctive contribution to contemporary understandings of landscape and the environment.

Full text
Abstract:
Old English poetry is centred on the concept of community and the importance of belonging. Landscape was a component of any community since, during the period when Old English poetry was being composed and written down, the landscape was a far more important constituent of daily life than it is for the majority of people today. Landscape dictated the places that could be settled, as well as the placing of the paths, fords, and bridges that joined them; it controlled boundaries, occupations, and trading routes. In the poetry of the period landscape, as part of the fabric of community, is the arbiter of whether each element of a community is in its proper place and relationship to the others. It is the means of explaining how a community is constructed, policed, and empowered. Erring communities can be corrected or threats averted through the medium of landscape which also positions communities in place and time. Landscape is presented as the cause of dissension in heaven, the consequent creation of hell, and the key to comprehension of the fundamental difference between them. The linguistic landscapes of Old English poetry are a functional component of the meaning inherent in the narratives.

Abstract:
This study examines the forces which shaped the main character--Tess Durbeyfield--in Hardy's novel in terms of the effects which her alcoholic family had upon her mental and emotional potential and which ultimately become the determining factors in her self-destruction. Using the elements and patterns set forth in the literature regarding the dynamics of the alcoholic family, I attempt to show that Hardy's novel may best be understood as the story of a woman whose life and destiny are controlled by the consequences of her father's alcoholism. This interpretation seems to account best for many elements of the novel, such as Tess's destruction, and provides a rich appreciation of Hardy's technique and vision.

Abstract:

Jag tar även hjälp av Jack Zipes och hans bok The Brothers Grimm - From Enchanted Forests to the Modern World. Dessutom används Barbara Walls bok The Narrator's Voice - The Dilemma of Children's fiction för att reda ut begreppet dubbelt tilltal.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Lietuvių literatūros eksperimentus pristato šie kūriniai: poeto P. Morkūno (1900-1941) poezijos rinkinys „Dainuoja degeneratas: dadaistiški imažinistiniai eilėraščiai“ (1993), J. Meko (g. 1922) dienoraštis „Žmogus be vietos.
The analysis of Lithuanian authors performances and the Oulipo experimental works with literary forms and strategies disclosed that the experiment is perceived as the conscious conjunction of literary elements and accommodation of constraints. As a result there is the emergence of new forms and structures. The main objectives of Master’s thesis are these: to present literary forms which are based on constraints; to reveal literary experiments related to genre and structure in the texts of I. Calvino, R. Queneau and J. Mekas; and through the works of R. Queneau and V. Klimašauskas to review several options of “the ordinary book” transformation and these influence to the meaning of the work. Analysis of the Oulipo group and Lithuanian authors works leads to the conclusion that experiment is expressed in all fundamental areas of literature. The competence of literary science is essential for the author because – as before starting the experimental work author is able to choose from the largest number of experimental elements and consequently he receive a variety of results.

Full text
Abstract:
This study refocuses the current critical discussion of determinism and character identity development in Theodore Dreiser's Sister Carrie, a predominantly "urban" novel, by juxtaposing the ways in which the natural world functions deterministically in Thomas Hardy's The Return of the Native and Theodore Dreiser's The Bulwark. First, a close reading of The Return of the Native suggests that characters' interactions with the natural world determine their identities by forcing shifts in perception and complicating their abilities to assert an identity apart from their environments. Then, a reading of The Bulwark—a novel in which Dreiser deals with the natural world quite directly—allows an exploration of how these same patterns of perception, understanding, and identity formation take shape in a text by Dreiser. The final chapter of this study synthesizes these readings of The Return of the Native and The Bulwark as a means of entry into an analysis of Sister Carrie's deterministic forces. Ultimately, attention to how the natural world influences characters through its timelessness and infinite size, as well as to how the natural world shapes a character's perspective and sense of self, adds to our understanding of the novel's determinism.

Abstract:
The object of this study is literary plagiarism in Spanish Literatures, from a historical, theoretical and practical approach. From a historical point of view, plagiarism perception and representation have encountered important evolutions. However, they have preserved common elements. A plagiarist is an ‘untruthful author’, but to this basic notion other materials have been attached from a number of epistemological and disciplinary perspectives. Considered first as a mere moral or legal infringement and subsequently assimilated to a certain concept of intertextuality, recent studies make use of pragmatic approaches to intend an explanation of the ambiguous and polemic nature of the subject. This thesis studies the phenomenon from a multidisciplinary approach, gaining with the contributions collected from Law, Comparative Literature, History or the different national literatures, though maintaining its focus on Spanish Literatures. The study is divided in three parts. The first one deals with the emergence, instauration and evolution of the concept until approximately the end of the XVIIth century. Secondly, different theories are reviewed in relation with the particular disciplinary approaches adopted. Finally, practical applications of plagiarism are considered: normative, strategic, ideological or artistic uses. This study offers a general view of the subject and both a theoretical and a literary corpus, until presently scattered in monographic works, in order to propose some possible research guidelines on plagiarism in the realm of the Spanish Literatures

Abstract:
When I write I, I also write we (say we also write that we’re momentarily in possession of the possibilities, and as for the possibilities: they have us), as in my hyperbolic twin brother and I, and from that point on (as well as before) in company with the gaps between us. The auto-corrections, the imposed circumstances, the complicities, and some conspirationalist copings within a system with no clearly identifiable nemesis. Here, the act of resistance to whatever is playing us, also enacts the playing of that which plays us. The heinous power of family and narrative insists. Two lead narratives are interwoven during the course of time it took for a pizza to be delivered (from pizzeria Marco Polo): Looping on a Panasonic Viera TX-55AX630E, the  search for a/my lost and/or hidden dad arrives through the mispronunciation of the word “that” during a negotiation in a park. Where a tangled hypothesis, along the lines of “what if the plot device of a shot of a moon in a video used to forward time (as in an alternative to ‘later that night’) was a graphic representation of an analog clock recognized in a to-be sliced pizza that is eventually consumed as a means to induce a food coma?” takes place (and time, as saved time is always already lost). It’s almost dark already. Also it's not, and the future held hostage by the river of the forest of the woods is followed by the sense of not being able to tell if there’s an emotion or a feeling present. Visits from passed pasts. It all starts to feel originatory. Thanks to X, this keeps on happening, thoughts and behaviours about suspicious timing and holistic systems keep on happening. This keeps on happening, and it works its way into physical works in an exhibition space with no reference to an infirmary, where parrot tulips are emotional flowers, a print is printed using a temperamental printer, sawdust creates glossy eyes, and all locked doors are eventually keyed out. An investigation into conditions of influence, co-authorship, connectivity, all within a space cohabited by comedy, sentimentality, and other states subject to flatness.

Abstract:
In this thesis I explore the place of the human in the Anthropocene, and our relationship to the Earth through an analysis of N. K. Jemisin’s The Broken Earth trilogy. As the trilogy depicts an apocalyptic landscape where the Earth has sentience and humanity is divided into three subspecies, this work of speculative fiction lends itself well to be interrogated and examined as an allegory for our current climate crisis. The analysis is anchored in posthumanism and employs a variety of concepts, such as Bruno Latour’s work on agency and deanimation, Donna Haraway’s Chthulucene, and Amitav Ghosh’s work on speculative fiction among others. I argue that The Broken Earth trilogy illustrates that the Earth is an agentive network that can no longer be ignored and contend that the trilogy complicates both anthropocentrism and individualism by depicting amplified versions of human beings, and in doing so highlights the arbitrary boundaries between both nature and society, and human and nonhuman. Thus, The Broken Earth trilogy can be read as a warning call for a future to be avoided at all costs, while concurrently be used to make sense of the incomprehensibility of our contemporary era.

Abstract:
Training data from 1441 graduates of the U.S. Army Special Forces Qualifications Course (SFQC) offered an opportunity to test a multidimensional model of training performance. A three-factor model based partially on the Kraiger, Ford, & Salas (1993) framework was operationalized with level-of-performance training criteria (Sackett & Mullen, 1993) and successfully confirmed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The model utilized the BE KNOW DO terminology from the U.S. Army?s leadership model to describe the cognitive, skill-based, and affective training outcome factors. Several alternative models were tested and found not to be identified, suggesting the Kraiger et al. (1993) version provided the best description of performance. Additionally, the BE KNOW DO model was successfully confirmed for two individual phases of the SFQC training separated in time. Therefore, structural equation modeling (SEM) analyses were conducted to determine the relationship of similar constructs over time. Each construct from the initial training phase was found to predict its counterpart in the later phase. The degree of relationship varied for the constructs, suggesting some were more influenced by time and situation. Two performance modeling issues?the specificity of performance constructs and the impact of overfitting a model to the idiosyncratic characteristics of the initial sample on cross-validation?were investigated as well. Results related to the specificity of modeling performance content were inconclusive. Both the one- and three-factor construct models failed to provide adequate fit. The over-modified model provided a worse fit upon cross-validation in 11 out of 12 cases, demonstrating the importance of cross-validating modified models. An integration of the training evaluation and job performance literatures is presented and serves as the rationale for proposing a general three-factor performance model. The idea that all performance can be described in terms of three factors regardless of the context, content, situation, measurement method, or performance level should be investigated. Future directions for practice and research are discussed.

How should we understand the revisions? To supply a contribution to an answer, this paper will map the artistic as well as personal trajectory of Jack Kerouac throughout the 1950s. Basing my analysis largely on correspondence, I will show how Kerouac constantly oscillated between different positions and attitudes within the space of literary production. The essay will argue that Kerouac’s pursuit of literary prestige, stood side by side with the always-present alternative of satisfying the demands of the large audience. If we add to this Kerouac’s obsession with his imagined audience it becomes clear that his final work resulted from more than his own aesthetic preferences. Devoting a section to his aesthetic program, I will explore to what extent editorial revisions, even seemingly minor ones, compromised his original text in significant ways. Keeping in mind his erratic trajectory, and adding to it Warren French’s complementary observation that Kerouac’s personality was violently split, will allow us to identify an equally contradictory literary self-expression. Thus comparing On the Road with Visions of Cody (the latter emerged through the revisions of the former), Kerouac’s literary expression can be said to manifest itself in two fundamentally different ways. In Road as a reifying gesture that mystifies man’s connection with the earth, and, in Visions as an opposite gesture of dereification that seeks to disclose the source of man-made products that have become reified. Proposing that the autobiographical component of Kerouac’s writing is essentially a gesture of dereification, the essay will argue that editorial revisions of such works inescapably destabilize the unity between experienced reality and textual representation.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study has been to determine what extraliterary forces--cultural, historical, political, social--shaped the critical reception of Alice Walker's first novel, The Third Life of Grange Copeland (1970). The philosophies of Hans Robert Jauss, as espoused in Toward an Aesthetic of Reception (1971), guided this study. Particular interest was placed on Jauss's claim that every work has its own specific, historically, and sociological determinable audience, that every writer is dependent on the milieu, view, and ideology of that audience and that literary success presupposes a book which presents what the audience expects, a book which presents the audience with its own image. (26)The Third Life of Grange Copeland appeared at the end of the Civil Rights Movement, in the midst of a Black Arts Movement (a movement that presented black artist with a criteria for representing their people), and on the cusp of a black feminist movement which moved black women from the object to the subject position in black literary discourse. The politically charged context in which Walker's first novel appeared determined her first audience's reception to her work. The reception from black civic leaders, literary critics, scholars and the black community was largely negative. This initial negative response has followed Walker throughout her literary career despite the fact that she has won both the American Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

Abstract:
"Genuine Cherry Red" is a fiction novel. It is the story of three people who live in a house beside a hill in the flattest place on earth - an almost fable-like setting. In different ways, each is locked inside the order and control they have constructed through the years. Surrounded by nature and its reliable cycle, they are resisting change and denying the unpredictable randomness of life. Marta is a young woman who is both intelligent and naïve, caught inside a private maze of thinking and rethinking. She lives with her mother's cousin Ena who gave up nursing to take Marta in when her mother succumbed to depression, and Ena' s husband Len, a successful and prolific writer of cowboy fiction. Since a cancer diagnosis, Len - who had been living with multiple sclerosis - has been virtually catatonic ... until Grey Bob suddenly arrives. The central character of Len's fictional stories permeates their lives and things begin to change. The natural environment, the people of the nearby town, the order of the house all transform and Marta, Ena and Len struggle to cope. But they have no choice. When the inevitable shifts occur, spontaneous events have impact and disease progresses, each member of the family eventually finds a way to deal with the fact that reality can be haphazard and out of their control. So, through the presence of a fictional character, three people are forced to confront the erratic nature of human life.

Salman Rushdie's 1999 novel The Ground Beneath Her Feet is ostensibly a rock 'n' roll novel, largely set in the 1960s, that traces the commercial rise of Indian rock star protagonists Vina Apsara and Ormus Cama. As their fame and wealth rise to global status and their stage show comes to entail a logistical complexity of military proportions, it becomes increasingly difficult to discern the couple's earlier countercultural ideals within their new established culture status. I argue that despite the change from countercultural to establishment-based values in the novel's protagonists, Rushdie does make a case in The Ground Beneath Her Feet for the possibility of countercultural efficacy against the commodifying culture of global capitalism (which I refer to as the "Frame"). His recipe for combating the exclusive hierarchies produced by the Frame is a combination of the non-totalizing politics of postmodernism and the subversive potential of uncommodified rock music. I pay close attention to establishing the historical templates--John Lennon of the Beatles and Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys--of the novel's protagonists in an effort to understand the sort of countercultural alternative Rushdie is proposing. I likewise focus on the novel's depiction of the Beach Boys' Smile album, which as a still commercially unreleased record, reinforces Rushdie's imperative in The Ground Beneath Her Feet for an uncommodifying counterculture and works in tandem with his portrayals of the artistic plights of several minor characters in the novel as well.

Abstract:
This doctoral dissertation follows two lines of argument. The first one investigates the narrative function of sententiousness within the novel as a genre. The second one is an applied reading of the narrative function of maxims in Marcel Proust's work "À la recherche du temps perdu". This work was selected because it allows us to challenge the main theses that literary theory has to offer with regards to the relationship between sententiousness and the novel.
Chapter 2, following the Introduction, defines the maxim in comparison to other short forms of narrative and explores its formal properties to claim for an approach to the genre that emphasizes functional properties instead.
The idea that maxims within novels work less as a "form" than as a textual "function" is at the origin of chapter 3, where I investigate the misreading that result from extracting maxims from fictional texts to compose other new works.
Chapter 4 addresses maxims from the point of view of Rhetoric, and more in particular, it deconstructs the rhetorical dogma in support of the continuity of text, and the principles behind such dogma.
Chapter 5 makes a case for discontinuity in "À la recherche..." a discontinuity that is revealed by the exogenous thrust of maxims within that text and shows other maxims to work to introduce verisimilitude in the fiction.
Chapter 6 analyses how maxims work within "À la recherche..." as a novel, not as a text. I demonstrate that the genre of Proust's "À la recherche..." should be reconsidered in the light of the importance of sententious discourse in this novel.
Chapter 7, followed by the Conclusions, studies how maxims affect the reading process, that is, the kind of contract established between narrator and narratee by means of maxims: how the narratee is affected by maxims and what the narrator foresees as the narratee's response
